RUI University is a multifaceted curriculum that promotes purposeful living. The program supports intellectual wellness by allowing residents to critically think and examine topics from a variety of disciplines. Residents engage with peers and visitors in discourse and work through questions collaboratively.

The Art of Ireland

We will have an overview of the history of art in Ireland A strong undercurrent of Celtic mythology, rural landscapes, and themes of national identity and political history will be covered Our painting will be influenced by Irish culture in honor of St Patrick's Day

The Castles of England

England is home to some of the world's most famous and well-preserved castles, ranging from royal residences like Wi ndsor Castle to hitoric fortesses such a the Tower of London We will look at a variety of famous castle displayed in paintings We will create our own colorful Whimsical castle inspired by these paintings.

The Visual Art Traditions of Latin America

Latin American art is the combined artistic expression of South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and Mexico, as well as Latin Americans living in other regions This broad culture has a rich tradition of visual art in a variety of forms. One of the hallmarks is the use of color and pattern. We will have an introductory slideshow of many of the traditional visual Arts of these traditions. Our painting will be inspired by one of these cultural styles.

Emily Basto received an MS in Art Therapy from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2009. She has her undergraduate degree in Sociology and Anthropology. Her interest in other cultures and customs influences many of her art projects. She currently works with older adults and really enjoys this community in various settings Emily hopes to continue to promote art therapy services and highlight the many benefits

Join a talented and award winning chocolatier, Mary Griffith, to learn about the history of chocolate, where and how chocolate grows, and how it is harvested Chocolate was a popular treat during colonial times By the middle of the 18th century, hot chocolate, flavored with a variety of spices, had become a favorite drink in both Europe and America. Mary Griffith will provide some background about how this New World concoction originated and found its way into the courts of the Continent.

Come join your fellow chocoholics to learn about your favorite treat. We will talk about where chocolate comes from, how it is a fruit, and famous people who were involved in the delicious history of chocolate! We’ll also explore what the cacao content of a chocolate means, how it affects your health, and how it affects the taste of the chocolate. At the end of the program, we will do a taste test to sample several chocolates to discover what makes one piece of chocolate different from another. What is the proper way to taste chocolate?

Did you know that chocolate was first consumed as a drink, and not as a chocolate bar? Do you know what cacao is? And where it comes from? Learning about the different types of chocolate is fun and chocolate can be healthy if you consume the right type The amount of cacao in a piece of chocolate certainly plays a role in the health benefits, as well as changes chocolate’s flavor and depth. Where does chocolate come from? What makes one chocolate different from another? At the end, you will have the opportunity to assist in the preparation of a chocolate treat, which of course, you will also be able to take with you to enjoy!

Mary Griffith is a 1990 graduate of Christopher Newport University, with a BSBA in Management and a Communication's Certificate. She was a member of the American Marketing Association, and a student assistant in the accounting department while at CNU Mary has been a member of Alumni Society Board in the early to late 90's , and is currently serving on the ASB again, and co-chairing the Careers Committee. Mary earned her MBA from Old Dominion University in 1991, and went on to be the Director of Marketing for a software development company. In 1994, Mary started Virginia's Finest Chocolates, which was a student project in the Small Business Institute classes at CNU, and is still her project today

The Chair One program was created for individuals who have complications standing during a fitness regimen This includes senior citizens, people with balance deficits, injuries, disabilities, or suffering from obesity. It is designed to keep individuals mobile and to ensure they remain progressive in daily function and/or recovery. This program delivers a fun, musically driven, interactive, full body workout that uplifts people through dance and fitness movements.

World Precussion Workshops Explore the rhythms of the world Select from West Africa, Middle and Far East, or Latin Rhythms Discover working together in community, increase your focus, and have fun!

Lois Reese is the founder of High Notes Rhythm and Wellness After 20 years as a classroom music teacher, it was time to move her classroom to the pool and to her church home In 2018 High Notes Music School was founded; with classes for children and youth, private lessons, and drum circles for all ages. Lois brings a vast musical background including singing with VA Opera, the VA Symphony Orchestra Chorus, VA Handbell Consort, leading church musicians of all ages, and has led numerous workshops in world percussion and handbells Lois also has a passion for helping seniors keep moving, whether it is in the water or seated in a chair. This is the core of High Notes Rhythm and Wellness, staying healthy in mind, body, and spirit.
