WHAT IS RUI UNIVERSITY?

RUI University is a multifaceted curriculum that promotes purposeful living. The program supports intellectual wellness by allowing residents to critically think and examine topics from a variety of disciplines. Residents engage with peers and visitors in discourse and work through questions collaboratively.

Dear Residents, Family, and Guests,

At RUI University, we believe lifelong learning should inspire not only the mind, but also joy, connection, and community This summer, we invite you to embrace a true #SummerStateOfMind a season designed to spark curiosity, celebrate experience, and bring people together through meaningful conversation and engaging discovery

Featuring The Vintage Advantage, our Summer 2026 series celebrates the wisdom and perspective that enrich every stage of life through thought-provoking masterclasses, wellness conversations, historical exploration, and community-centered events designed to educate, inspire, and connect

Throughout the season, residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community can look forward to special monthly themes and celebrations designed to inspire learning and connection.

In June, we explore Facing Alzheimer’s: Knowledge, Compassion & Hope, featuring conversations surrounding Alzheimer’s research, memory care, and the science of empathy while recognizing Father’s Day, Juneteenth, and the spirit of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Do What You Love to End ALZ® initiative.

In July, we celebrate The Intellectual Legacy of History: Patterns, Power & Progress, examining revolutions, political transformation, and the great thinkers who shaped society while honoring America’s 250th birthday and the spirit of the Fourth of July

In August, we focus on The Science of Well-Being: Designing a Life of Purpose, Vitality & Connection, exploring the neurobiology of energy, wellness, and human connection while also enjoying our annual Bistro Trivia Tournament and the final celebrations of summer

We invite residents, family members, guests, and members of the greater community to join us throughout the summer as we celebrate learning, culture, wellness, and togetherness. These shared experiences strengthen connections across generations and make lifelong learning even more rewarding

Our summer classes and events are open to all Whether you are returning to RUI University or joining us for the very first time, we welcome you to experience a summer filled with insight, inspiration, and celebration.

Majestic Symbols

The Bald Eagle in Color Kick off the celebration by painting the ultimate icon of American freedom In this session, we’ll move beyond traditional portraits to capture the Bald Eagle against a "fun" background think splattered neon sunsets, geometric patterns, or abstract red, white, and blue washes. You’ll learn feather-layering techniques while letting your creativity fly.

The American Flag Reimagined There is no symbol more recognizable than Old Glory This class focuses on movement and texture as we paint the American Flag. Whether you want to create a rustic, weathered wood-grain effect or a flowing, cinematic banner catching the wind, you’ll master the art of "stars and stripes" with a personal, artistic flair.

Amazing stories of the heroes at Arlington National Cemetery - this topic profiles people who achieved remarkable things during their military career and in some cases, equally impressive accomplishments in civilian life; most names are not well known but a few people will be recognized by most listeners; this presentation has two parts which can be presented separately.

Heather Connole is a self-taught impressionist oil painter with 17 years of experience She is a member of the Botan Rouge and Manassas Art Guild Heather is currently represented at the Elizabethan Gallery in Baton Rouge, LA., Art and Curious, Calabash, NC., and Behold Customa Art classes and Framing Bay St. Louis, MS. She was contracted as an Artist in Residency to teach art classes at retirement homes and middle schools by the Manship Theatre and The Baton Rouge Arts Council She is certified to be a Talented Art Assessor for the state of Louisiana and would help with portfolio prep for ages 6-17 for Talented Art programs Heather's artwork was featured in "Town favorites," "Coastal Living" and "Country Roads" magazines.. She also has artwork that has been rented for movies filmed in Baton Rouge. Heather is currently teaching paint and sip classes at wineries, is an art instructor for 16 years

"Ron Duquette, 73, is a native of Springfield, Massachusetts, and the lineal descendant of a French soldier who was in New France, in 1640 He is a 1974 graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont with a Bachelor of Letters degree (cum laude) in French Language and Literature, and has a 1984 Masters of Science Degree (summa cum laude) in Government from Campbell University, North Carolina. Entering the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant in 1974, he spent the next twenty years in assignments and schools in Arizona, Washington State, New Jersey, North Carolina, and then in Europe between Germany and England His theatrical experience is broad, starting in high school through his time in the Army, ranging from French classical and modern theater (Le Mistere de la Passion, L'Avare, Le Tartuffe, Le Bal des Voleurs) to Shakespeare (King Lear, Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice) to musical theater (The Sound of Music, Little Me, Patience (G&S), The Stingiest Man in Town) He has also interpreted several historic personages: Harry Truman in a 1987 self-written and produced staging in Heidelberg, Germany in connection with the 200th anniversary of the writing of the Constitution of the United States; and as the Marquis de La Fayette at both Tudor Place in Georgetown and Gadsby's Tavern in Old Towne Alexandria.

This award-winning show inspires all of us to "Never Give Up!"

Mary Ann Jung is an award-winning actress and Smithsonian scholar. You have probably already seen this this performer, scholar, writer, and director, but not in modern clothing! Ms Jung researches and writes her own scripts, and performs in the authentic costumes, accents, and attitudes for her characters’ eras.

Musicians served gods and kings, and since music sets the atmosphere for romance, musicians and musical instruments are often seen in paintings Let’s explore the history of musical instruments through paintings So many we know today are descended of musical instruments as recorded pictorially in the past Wherever possible, images from the Met Museum’s Musical Instruments collection, will be included, so you can expect to see pictures of precious stringed instruments and the world’s oldest surviving piano.

NeuroSound Music Therapy is a multidisciplinary creative arts therapy center offering music therapy and adapted music lessons to individuals across all stages of life. Founded in 2015 by Kelsi Tafaro, the organization has expanded to include a variety of creative arts therapies to meet the growing needs of its clients The team is dedicated to fostering independence, supporting development and growth, and inspiring self-expression through music. NeuroSound serves diverse populations by partnering with schools, nursing homes, mental health facilities, adult day programs, medical facilities, and other community organizations.

Meet Archie the Therapy Dog

Archie is stopping by to share some puppy love, gentle head scratches, and plenty of tail wags with our residents Whether you're looking for a furry friend to sit with or just a little mid-week cheer, Archie can’t wait to see you.

We are an international registry of certified therapy dog teams. At ATD, we provide testing, certification, registration, support, and insurance for members who volunteer with their dogs in animal-assisted activities

Our objective is to form a network of caring individuals and their special dogs who are willing to share smiles and joy with people, young and old alike.

Blane Ampthor is a retired federal employee with more than 36 years of service. He has had a lifelong interest in history and has read extensively on World War II, the American Revolution and ocean liners. He has taught with several Lifelong Learning Institutes and has instructed with various organizations such as the Loudoun County Public Library system in Virginia, AARP and seniors’ communities He enjoys visiting sites related to his interests so he can gain a fuller understanding of events
