Hello Eisenstadt (Servus Eisenstadt)

Eisenstadt represents the provincial capital of Burgenland. In this region is one of the few steppe lakes that Europe has to offer: Lake Neusiedl. The city is located at the foot of the Leitha Mountains and is a true paradise for numerous "bicycle hikers".

The most famous son of the city is the composer Joseph Haydn. Travelers from afar arrive at Vienna Central Station with the ÖBB nightjet and continue their journey to Eisenstadt with the ÖBB cityjet. The travel time to Eisenstadt is approximately one hour.

The City

Small, but ﬁne!

In the area around Eisenstadt, there were already the first settlements in the Hallstatt period. Over the centuries, Celts, Romans, Germans, and Huns settled here. In 1118, the name "Castrum Ferrum" (Iron Castle) was documented for the first time. The name Eisenstadt (Hungarian Kismarton) appears in the first documents in 1264. Burgenland has belonged to Austria since 1921, and Eisenstadt has been the seat of the provincial government since 1925. The municipality of Eisenstadt consists of Eisenstadt, Kleinhöflein in Burgenland, and

Sankt Georgen am Leithagebirge. Nearly 15,000 inhabitants live in the former residence city of the Princes Esterházy.

The city is located at the foot of the Leitha Mountains at an elevation of 182 meters. Protected by the Leitha Mountains, whose highest peak is the Sonnenberg (484 meters), countless apricot, almond, and peach trees thrive in the surrounding area. As in the entire Burgenland, many grapevines can be found around Eisenstadt.

Churches

Brothers of Mercy (Barmherzige Brüder)

The Church of the Brothers of Mercy is dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua. It is part of the old hospital, which began around 1500 as a poorhouse and was later converted into a citizen's hospital. The house

of worship houses the Haydn Organ built by Franz Frey, for which the master probably composed the Little Organ Solo Mass.

Calvary Chapel Church

In the Oberberg district stands the impressive Calvary Chapel Church. Notable is the Way of the Cross, which was modeled after the Calvary Hill of Maria Lanzendorf (Lower Austria). Entered from

this side, one reaches the Chapel of Grace dating from 1711. The ascent to the Calvary Hill is also on this side.

St. Martin's Cathedral (Martinsdom)

The first records of St. Martin's Cathedral date back to 1264. At that time, it was the St. Martin's Chapel of Kleinmartinsdorf, today's Eisenstadt. Over the centuries, the cathedral was repeatedly adapted

and rebuilt to the respective stylistic directions. Impressive are the stained glass windows by Franz Deéd.

Franciscan Church (Franziskanerkirche)

During both major Turkish sieges of Vienna, the church and monastery were completely destroyed and burned down. The family crypt of the Princes Esterházy has been located in the monastery

complex since 1705. In the monastery building is the Diocesan Museum, opened in 1980, which displays significant objects from local parishes.

Haydn Church (Haydnkirche)

Behind the Calvary Chapel Church, one reaches the entrance to the Haydn Church and the Mausoleum. The simple entrance is deceptive, because when you enter the church, you are captivated by the large

painting above the high altar. Next to it stands the building where Haydn lived until he moved to the current Haydn House.

Haydn Mausoleum (Haydn-Mausoleum)

Joseph Haydn was born in Rohrau in 1732. The master lived in the current parish house until he moved to his own house. The sarcophagus shows the opening notes of the Imperial Hymn. The head

of the corpse disappeared initially and after long wanderings was reunited with the rest of the skeleton in 1954.

Museums

Haydn House (Haydnhaus)

Joseph Haydn lived in the two-story house from 1766 to 1778. Today it is a museum and shows how the master spent his private life. Some of his furniture and instruments are presented here. When

Haydn bought this house, he also acquired a small garden at Bürgerspitalgasse 2, which can be visited.

Jewish Museum (Jüdisches Museum)

This museum was opened in 1972 as the first Jewish museum after 1945. The synagogue in the house was mentioned in documents in 1696. The builder of the house, Samson Wertheimer, was appointed

"Court and War Chief Factor" in 1703. His palace was financed by the Esterházys in gratitude for his services.

Provincial Gallery (Landesgalerie)

Here one finds contemporary and modern art. The program includes fine arts, plastics, sculpture, installations, and media art. In the Burgenland Provincial Gallery, art enthusiasts will find the

permanent exhibition "Intersection Burgenland" and an interesting range of changing exhibitions.

Provincial Museum (Landesmuseum)

Over three floors, 10,000 years of human history are told. The permanent exhibition shows LifeImages, LifeSpaces, and LifeTraces. In the basement, the second largest archaeological collection in Austria can be viewed, and on the

ground floor, visitors will find exhibitions of the three religious communities and typical customs.

Esterhazy Palace

Haydn Hall (Haydnsaal)

Paul I was elevated to the rank of prince in 1687. He commissioned the renovations of the old castle. Among other things, the Great Hall, now the Haydn Hall, was built. The magnificent

ceiling frescoes depict fables of Hungarian lands and provinces, legends, and fairy tale scenes up to the admission of Psyche into the heaven of the gods in the center of the ceiling.

State Rooms (Prunkräume)

Esterházy Palace has been the main residence of the princely family for over 300 years. After the general renovation in 2008, the palace, one of the

landmarks of Eisenstadt, presents itself in excellent condition. The association of the Burgenland Haydn Festivals has had its seat here since 1986.

Haydn Explosive (Haydn Explosiv)

A multimedia exploration of the phenomenon "Joseph Haydn". The life of the musical genius is presented using modern technology from Eisenstadt to stardom in London. Documents and letters of the

artist are shown, as well as the original grand piano of his patroness Princess Maria Josepha Hermenegilde.

Leopoldine Temple (Leopoldinentempel)

Picturesquely located in the eastern part of the palace park of Esterházy Palace stands the Leopoldine Temple. The round temple with 19 columns was built from 1818 to 1819. Inside

stands a statue of "Principessa Leopoldina Esterházy", created by one of the most significant artists of his time, Antonio Canova.

The Orangery in Eisenstadt was one of the most significant plant collections in Europe for many years and was the greatest attraction of the palace park. Although most of the

Orangery was lost due to the destructions in the Second World War, the building today once again offers an enchanting backdrop for many occasions.
