Patrick Hahn Conductor
Tatsuru Arai Visual Artist
Whether it’s film scores or genre-defying operas, modern myths or collaborations with David Bowie, the music of Philip Glass has captivated audiences around the world – crossing art forms and setting the pulse of contemporary music. Marking ten years since Bowie’s death, the RSNO returns to Sonica Glasgow with Glass’ Symphony No4 Heroes – a sweeping orchestral re-imagining of Bowie and Brian Eno’s iconic 1970s album which drew its inspiration from the then-divided city of Berlin. Visual artist Tatsuru Arai enhances the experience with sumptuous visuals that transform Glass’ sound world into one of shimmering light and motion. We can be heroes, just for one day.

Steve Reich New York Counterpoint (11’)
Steve Reich Music for Ensemble and Orchestra (20’)
Steve Reich The Desert Music (46’)
Colin Currie Conductor
Ian Dearden Sound Designer
Dunedin Consort Chorus
I am wide awake: the mind is listening. There’s a reason why Steve Reich is a living legend – he’s the composer who broke music down to its raw elements and then rebuilt it, transforming the way we listen. Scottish percussion superstar Colin Currie leads a dancing, shimmering salute to a true icon, including the mind-expanding 1983 epic The Desert Music. Experience minimalism taken to the maximum: the sounds that made our century, in all their power, rhythm and beauty.
Sun 7 Mar 2027: 2.30pm
Steve Reich Music for Pieces of Wood (15’)
Bryce Dessner Tromp Miniature (7’)
Andy Akiho Aluminous (10’)
Robert Honstein Continuous Interior (18’)
Colin Currie Percussion
RSNO Chamber Ensemble
If you can hit it, you can make music with it –and in the hands of Scottish percussion superstar Colin Currie, anything’s possible. A team of RSNO musicians joins Currie for an afternoon concert with a transatlantic flavour, all inspired by a giant among living composers, Steve Reich. Pieces of wood, aluminium bars, the chime of the marimba and the otherworldly atmosphere of an airport lounge: with a bit of magic, they can all create music. And Currie has wizardry to spare.
The RSNO’s Chamber Series is the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Relax and enjoy these intimate performances in the New Auditorium. It’s the ultimate way to hear your favourite musicians up close and personal.

Sun 4 Oct 2026: 2.30pm
Brahms String Sextet No1 Op18 Schoenberg Verklärte Nacht Op4

Lawrence Power Viola
RSNO Strings
Take Brahms at his happiest, add six terrific musicians (including viola sensation Lawrence Power), throw in some glorious tunes and the result is irresistible. But if Brahms’ First Sextet is true musical sunshine, Schoenberg’s ‘Transfigured Night’ is deep, velvety darkness. A tale of forbidden love poured out in some of the most sensuous music ever written, this is half an hour of decadence at its most delirious. Pure joy meets ultimate passion in one incredible afternoon of music.

Britten Sinfonietta Op1 Honegger Pastorale d’été Brahms arr David Walter
RSNO Wind Dectet
Great things come in small packages. There are only ten players in this afternoon’s concert, but between them they can conjure up worlds. The teenage Benjamin Britten strides out with style, while high in the Alps on a perfect summer morning, the Swiss composer Arthur Honegger sits back and enjoys the view. And then the RSNO Wind Dectet plays Brahms’ First Serenade – a portrait of a genius in holiday mood, full of great tunes and musical jokes. Come and join the fun!

Sun 16 May 2027: 2.30pm
Programme includes:
Beethoven Sechs Lieder von Gellert Op48
Tailleferre Trois chansons de Jean Tardieu plus songs by Haydn, Stanford, Chaminade and Sullivan
Beth Taylor Mezzo-soprano
Marcia Hadjimarkos Piano
Once in a generation – if we’re lucky – a voice comes along that’s in a class of its own. Beth Taylor was born in Glasgow, and since making the grand final of Cardiff Singer of the World in 2023, it’s become clear that her gorgeous, heart-warming sound is destined to astonish the world. But don’t take our word for it: hear for yourself this afternoon as she performs a magical sequence of songs from Britain, Austria and France. Prepare to be enchanted.
Lauded by The Guardian for her ‘dark and focused’ voice, ‘sensational coloratura’ and ‘spectacular singing’, Beth Taylor is one of today’s most electrifying young mezzo-sopranos. The Glaswegian was a grand finalist of the 2023 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, the winner of the 2022 Elizabeth Connell Award, 3rd prize winner of the 2019 Wigmore Hall Competition and the winner of the 2018 Gianni Bergamo Classical Music Awards. She was shortlisted for the ‘Newcomer’ award at the International Opera Awards 2023.

We believe music enriches lives. That’s why you’ll find RSNO musicians out in your local community, across all 32 Scottish local authorities, delivering performances, workshops, participatory events and digital content 52 weeks of the year.
2025
18,000+ children enjoyed our live and digital schools content.
Our musicians engaged with people with long-term health conditions and life-limiting conditions through our partnerships with THAT, CHAS and Meeting Centres Scotland.
1,267 singers enjoyed the health and wellbeing benefits of singing in our range of choirs.
Our partnerships with Sistema Scotland, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Douglas Academy and St Mary’s Music School enabled young people to access unique performing opportunities with support from our musicians.
183,825 students across Scotland were able to watch RSNO content in their classrooms through music education platform Charanga.

Throughout 2025 we delivered nearly 300 activities reaching over 80,200 individuals.

When more people have access to their national orchestra, our communities are stronger, our economy more resilient and our wellbeing improved. From the largest concert halls in Scotland’s major cities to the smallest village halls in our rural communities, the RSNO aims to reach more people and mean more to them – and you can help make that happen.
