I personally love the “back to school” season. There is a special energy in the air as everyone picks out new school supplies, the perfect backpack, and a fresh pair of kicks to start their adventure out on the right foot (pun intended). It is a time full of fresh starts, bright ideas, and endless possibilities! However, for some, especially young children, this time of year proves to be less exciting. New classrooms, new teachers, unfamiliar routines, and being away from home can evoke a whirlwind of emotions, often leading to a significant amount of anxiety. As a parent, you may find yourself wondering: Is this normal? How can I help? Good news: You are not alone, and neither is your child. Many students experience nervousness at the beginning of the school year, and with the right support, most adjust well. Here is how you can help ease the transition and support your child’s emotional wellbeing in these first several weeks.

1) Acknowledge Their Feelings It might be tempting to say things like, "There's nothing to worry about!"—but anxiety often needs to be heard, not dismissed. Let your child know their feelings are valid. Try phrases like:

“It’s okay to feel nervous about starting something new.” “Lots of kids feel this way at the beginning of the year.” When children feel seen and understood, their worries tend to shrink. 2) Establish Predictable Routines

Establishing a routine provides children with a sense of control and security. Aim to make mornings as calm and predictable as possible by implementing: A consistent wake-up time A protein-rich breakfast A few minutes of connection before leaving for the day In the afternoons, creating a routine for unpacking backpacks, completing homework, and unwinding can also be beneficial. 3) Practice Separation and Reunions

For young children, saying goodbye can often be the most challenging moment of the day. It is important to keep goodbyes brief, assured, and consistent. Establishing a special farewell ritual—such as a hug, a high five, or a secret handshake—can help make the transition smoother.
