SOUTHERN REGION NEWSLETTER, JUNE 2018 Welcome to the Southern Region newsletter for June 2018. In this newsletter you’ll find a new list of events that the region and SIG’s are holding for the second half of the year, a special offer from the Digital Imaging Group, and a call out for volunteers for the region. We continue to plan an exhibition of members work later in the year, but we need your help. So please read the item in this newsletter. Photowalks are again a feature in the next half year, but look out for new events, such as Studio Lighting, Camera to Print and Darkroom Developing workshops. And, of course our AGM in October. Last but not least – the Southern Region Speaker Event is taking place in Winchester on Sunday 10th June. It’s free to members, so if you are looking for something to do this Sunday, why not come along to Winchester.

Volunteers Wanted We are actively seeking volunteers to take up the specialist roles of Social Media Editor and Newsletter Editor. Have you ever considered volunteering with the RPS? We are currently looking to boost our volunteer group with members who would like to take an active part in the organisation of Southern Region events / advisory days and workshops. If you think you would like give some time to the RPS as a volunteer then please get in touch. We don’t expect volunteers to give up lots of time, or effort, just help out with events and maybe idea generation, and to get a little more involved with the RPS organisation in the region.

04 Pint Exhibition 2018 In the second half of this year we plan to have a travelling exhibition of the work of some of our members, the format is still being finalised but we will display the prints at our events and also, at any other venues, clubs or meetings we can find or which are suggested to us. So, do please think of events or venues where we might display the best prints, and also start to consider which of yours you would like to include. Assuming we have more than we can display, we will ask members to select the final set at our AGM later this year. The format will be as follows: Each member may submit up to 4 prints. All work must be entirely the photographer’s own work. Entries must be mounted, size 50 x 40cm. If submitting by post, packing used for sending the work should be suitable for returning entries. Entry fee plus return postage if required, should be sent with the entry form, cheques payable to ‘RPS Southern’. Each entry should have the title and the photographer’s name and address clearly written on the back. We would plan to hold the prints and exhibit them for up to 6 months before returning to their owners. Please send suggestions or comments on our proposed exhibition to Martin Silman at southernevents@rps.org

The current trend in what I do is driven by themes to which I keep referring. A large longitudinal project is large public spaces. (Heavily influenced by the work of photographers originating from the Dusseldorf School.)

My documentary / street photography is defined as far as possible by humour, juxtaposition, character and narrative. The narrative side leads into a diverse range of images which are both enigmatic - posing queries about where and why? And noticing the everyday experience, the mundane in a context of making a statement about the nature of our existence which is huge, all pervasive and which we often ignore - the fish in water syndrome.
Some images can evoke questions about many issues around what we ‘put up with’ in our quotidian lives - our idealised existence is in the image and not in our fantasies or imagination about what it should be.

06 And Finally – Photography Tip To state the obvious, it’s Summer and the annual holidays are upon us. If you are planning to get away over the Summer you don’t have to lug your expensive equipment around with you Try having some fun with your smartphone Have a daily competition with your partner – after a day’s fun photography, compare each other’s photographs and agree who’s trumps the other’s Set a theme and compare each other’s interpretations Use an app like Snapseed to process your photos Don’t forget to save them and download them to your device at home – look at them on the ‘big screen’ and you might just find some gems Give it a go, and I hope you all have a great summer.
