Notes from your RO
This year has started well, at Wakefield our first Advisory Day saw some excellent panels, with an anticipated high number of distinction acceptances, should all the advice be followed. This was the first in the new format, advising for several A Distinction categories and although there were some concerns about format, with how digital images were being viewed, we will continue with this arrangement throughout 2018, monitor and review if there has been any significant change to submissions and what effect this may have on the Region and the Society. Some of you may be aware that I have joined the Representative Committee, in representing the Regional Organisers on matters to advise Council. We have met twice, being quite proactive for a new group. The key points identified were: communications [both inwardly and externally] especially with members; the Journal; Education; and Volunteer support, so a good few months of work. My next meeting will be the Regional Organisers and SIGs meeting early in July. If anyone has any relevant and specific points that they may wish for me to try and address at the meeting, please email me before 20th June 2018.

Yorkshire Region Members’ Day and AGM - 21st April 2018 For everyone who attended the Region’s Members’ Day in April, I think you would agree this was again a successful and interesting day. We were fortunate to have both Carolyn Mendelsohn (centre image) and Ian Day FRPS as guest speakers. Displays and representatives from a range of interests and active groups from the region, such as the RPS Historical Group, RPS AV Group, a selection of photo books presented by John Pyatt FRPS, Yorkshire Monochrome Group and the YPU (bottom image) and Wakefield Camera Club. The day started with the customary Regional AGM (top image), which was so well attended and in the main, current committee members are standing, hopefully an additional couple of new members to help out with events to spread further across the region. A very sincere thank you to everyone who participated and took time to share experiences on the day. We have more café sessions/self help group and advisory days planned for the near future. The café sessions, you may have noticed, have changed format slightly in that we are able to offer a guiding hand in preparation presenting at an Advisory Day, followed by Distinction submission. Check the details on the RPS webpage www.rps.org I also hope that many of you have been to see the RPS IPE 160 in Barnsley, another chance to see some captivating images (closing 9th June).

I recently realised that it I’d been excavating and recording ancient graves for sixty years. Some of my retirement is spent giving illustrated illustrated talks entitled “Other People’s Graves’, one for experienced photographers or archaeologists, and a shorter, less technical version for amateur enthusiasts such as members of historical societies and Probus Clubs. I’m reminded just how primitive my equipment was in the 1950s, as I re-discover my files and scan and restore old images, bringing back all sorts of memories. Figure 1: The first burial I excavated and photographed, this shows a medieval monk buried close to the altar of St John’s Priory, Pontefract. Not being able to locate the negative, this is scanned from an ‘enprint’. Please excuse the poor techniques of excavation and photography. The image was shot with a Coronet Viscount, a snapshot camera taking, I think, 828 film; like 35mm without the sprocket holes. Figure 2: This burial had been of someone considered to be important at the time, because of the lead coffin lining found in the vault of the same priory. It also suggests that the occupant died a long way from home, having been soldered into the lead lining to prevent seepage during transport. I never had a chance to photograph the opened coffin as my hands and arms were covered in a mixture of white lead oxide and decay-products. This was shot with a 35mm instrument called an Ideal Color 35, which cost about £10. Again, this is scanned from an enprint. The colleague who helped me expose and empty this coffin recently died, in his mid-eighties, perhaps partly fulfilling the prophesy of a bystander who saw us at work, to the effect that we would probably be cursed and die prematurely. Figure 3: My final example is one of the last images I shot on film, of one of the Towton Battlefield burials. By this time I had the full outfit of two Minolta X700s, TTL flashguns, reflectors, bellows, flash-meter, etc, and a scientific accomplice who plied me with coffee. This was captured in a warm lab at Bradford University; no cold, wet muddy grave here, thank goodness. I would be happy to visit local groups with either talk, or indeed any of my other talks, all illustrated in colour. I have been privileged to photograph some of the most important digs in Britain, including the Sutton Hoo Ship Burial, the St Aidan’s Sunken Ships, and many others. A good reason to produce a photo book. Andrew Howard LRPS According to Rick Stein, visitors to India experience an ‘…assault on the senses…’; The riot of colour, the friendly people, the anarchy of the traffic and the overall ‘busy-ness’ creates remarkable memories and a multitude of photographic opportunities. In autumn 2017, I spent two hectic weeks visiting the four Indian cities of Udaipur, Jodhpur, Pushkar and Jaipur in Rajasthan. After fourteen days I returned home with more than enough images to compile a photo-book. Turning such a collection of images into a ‘real book’ rather than leaving them hiding inside a computer hard drive is almost integral to doing such a trip. The selection and editing process also proved to be a good learning experience. The finished book now sits proudly on my coffee table. How many others have done, or could do, the same?
