Update about your Regional Committee Dear Yorkshire Members This newsletter comes with significant implication in that the Yorkshire Region may be once again in a state of lack of activity or development in the light of the very recent resignations of some committee members including the Regional Organiser and the upcoming retirement of the Treasurer.* A likely consequence, is that without the intervention of a few good people to help organise and facilitate activities/events for the region, there is once again the risk of stagnation, a lack of any development or growth. We are looking for people who are interested in the work of the society and willing to give their time to help run events for the region. For any further information or discussion about the help required please contact Mary Crowther at yorkshire2@rps.org or Kate Constance Kate@rps.org *Regional Treasurers do not need any special accounting skills. Support is provided by the professional staff at RPS headquarters. All that is required is the ability to record transactions on a spreadsheet and liaise with the Society’s finance team. André Bergmans
André Bergmans, RPS Benelux Chapter, was guest speaker at the North East Contemporary SIG mee@ng in January, chaired by Patricia Ann Ruddle ARPS. André gave an enlightening talk about his interests in photography by discussing several of the great photographers who have contributed to the body of work and collec@ons across the world and how other photographers could develop their own picture making skills by inves@ga@ng them and learning from them, demonstra@ng an understanding of the image by producing and presen@ng their own version, not by copying them, but by analysing the ligh@ng, the exposure, the depth of field, the tonal range and composi@on. Despite the internet providing easy access to these photographers and their work, a majority of photographers, including many club and society members, could be forgiven for never having heard of them, and André is interested in moving this forward a liKle, or more than a liKle. André is currently working on this ides with a couple of camera clubs, hoping to progress the project following the outcome and further interest. This will involve giving each member taking part an envelope containing only an individual photograph and the photographer’s name. Their assignment/ project is to research the photograph and photographer to develop their inspira@on to make their own version, along with interpreta@on - then come back together and present and discuss their image, processes, findings, etc. Similar projects can also be developed using adver@sement images of food, cars or toys in magazines or supermarkets. Original images have not been included - to allow everyone to start searching for the great bodies of work, although a few links are provided to get you started. This also avoids poten@al copyright issues. Beelitz Heilstä+en Bob Gates
Bob Gates described how, following his research, he obtained permission to make a photo visit to this abandoned Workers’ Tuberculosis Sanatoriums Complex close to Berlin. This listed historical monument was built between 1898 and 1930 by the Berlin Regional Health Insurance Office, it is one of the largest hospital sites surrounding Berlin, comprising 60 buildings across 200 hectares. During the First World War it was used as a field hospital for German troops, reverQng to its original purpose in 1920. In the Second World War it was again used as a military hospital. Some buildings suffered severe damage during the war and the Russian Army took it over in 1945, staying unQl 1994. Some renovaQon was carried out by a private investor unQl they became insolvent. The site is now in private ownership and a neurological rehabilitaQon centre is in operaQon. Further medical plans include the creaQon of a centre for paQents with Parkinson's disease. However, most of the sprawling complex has been abandoned. Bob’s photographs show a range of architecture which is derelict, overgrown, but colourful and beauQful.

There’s more to making pictures than good camera skills RPS Honorary Life Member, Patricia Ann Ruddle, ARPS, who many of you may know, is a photographer, photo historian and printmaker. She enjoys the image taking process and then she explores how she can produce an impression of how she felt when iniBally capturing the scene. As a printmaker, she enjoys combining both processes with her recent solar plate etching images. Patricia is also a member of West Yorkshire Print Workshop and of York Printmakers.
