RPS Travel Group Tour to The Dolomites Tutored by Charlie Waite 24th – 29th June 2019 £1999 per person (single occupancy) Light & Land has had a long-standing fondness for Italy, with regular photography tours to Tuscany and Umbria and now with a visit to the Dolomites. We will see and photograph this truly spectacular mountain region at a time when we hope carpets of alpine flowers will be stretching out beneath what many photographers and geologists regard as the finest mountain range in continental Europe. The Dolomites are amazingly accessible. Fewer than two hundred kilometres from Venice and less from the southern Austrian border, one can be at the very centre of these thrilling mountains with their jagged towering pinnacles in a matter of just a few hours.

PHOTOGRAPHIC HOLIDAYS AND WORKSHOPS The Dolomites distinctive appearance is as a result of a complex and lengthy geological history stretching back some 250 million years ago. It is worth remembering that this land was once under the sea and subject to everything from submarine landslides to 1000 metre sea floor subsidence to seismic shocks and seaquakes. All this undersea chaos, over many millions of years, and subsequent weather erosion give us a landscape to revere and wonder at today. We will hopefully capture the drama and atmosphere in amongst this scenery with our photography and return with images that will testify to an unforgettable Dolomite experience. Our hotel is in the heart of the Dolomites. To the south sits giant Marmolada, the highest mountain in the range at 3,344 meters. We will be able to make regular forays, along safe and well-kept roads, through mountain-flanked valleys for some fine days of photography in this stunning region.

PHOTOGRAPHIC HOLIDAYS AND WORKSHOPS These staggering peaks will, with a little good fortune, produce some particularly dramatic images with last and first light squeezing through stunning passes and glancing off the silver and pinkish mountain sides. We will have ample time to revisit locations with regular journeys through the passes of the Sella, the Pordoi and the Gardena offering us the opportunity (and the luxury!) of making images of the same locations in different light. This is one of the fundamental benefits of this photographic tour that involves no long journeys allowing photographers a chance to understand the way light is absorbed and reflected by these remarkable mountains. As with many Light & Land tours, there will be short and very manageable evening and daytime talks about composition, exposure and filtration.

PHOTOGRAPHIC HOLIDAYS AND WORKSHOPS With the small RPS travel group, Charlie will be very keen to discuss the unravelling process of photographs in pursuit of refining the business of composition when the images are made. He is keen to have conversations around identifying possible areas of conflict, which may cause the viewer to be ‘tripped up’ in their appreciation of the image. Charlie would like to ask all participants to bring three images each for constructive appraisal. He will be bringing a projector allowing all 8 members of the group an opportunity to share in the discussions. Throughout the tour, Charlie will always be on hand to guide advise. This tour is exclusive to the RPS Travel Group and is not available to the general public. This is a special one-off luxury tour with Charlie.
