And because I could wait for the service of a well-known electronics company, I had not taken my camera with me, but only my mobile phone at hand to take this shot (with the iPhone 11 Pro Max). DEAR MEMBERS,
Another three months have passed since we published the last copy of our eMagazine. Therefore, we are all the more pleased to be able to present you the latest issue of our eMagazine with many great articles again. Now that the situation on the Corona front seems to have improved, we regained our accustomed freedoms. This includes travelling in other countries and participating in live events. We, the Benelux and the Germany Chapter took advantage of that and held a long-planned photo workshop that took us to the underground of Munich. There we dealt with the architecture of the underground stations and how to capture it in photographs. You can read more about this in our “Top Story” section. In the “Photo Work” section, our members once again showed their wide-ranging repertoire in the fields of photography and inspired us with great shots.
Next, Anthony Cutler inspires us with terrific pictures on the latest exhibition theme of the Germany Chapter, “That’s me - My Style”. A big thank you to Anthony for starting this series here in the eMagazine. In the final section, “Events”, our Swedish member, Grahame Soden, reports about his experiences during the Wave Gothic Meeting in Leipzig, Germany, which he attended a few years ago. Finally, some good news about the situation of the Germany Chapter. After a slight decrease in the number of members in the past years, the trend is going up again. All the more, we ask all members to participate in the association’s life actively and to contribute to the eMagazine. A LIVE WORKSHOP OF THE BENELUX AND GERMANY CHAPTER
I
t all started with the Corona pandemic and the lockdown that came with it. Chris, who usually travels the world for work, suddenly found himself with a lot of free time.
He used this time to realise a long-cherished photographic project about the beauty of the architecture of Munich’s underground stations. To this end, he set out during the lockdown and photographed 30 stations of the Munich underground. After collecting a good number of photographs, Chris thought it would be a good idea to share these images and his experiences with the members of the Royal Photographic Society during an online talk.

Because of the overwhelmingly positive response to the online talk, Chris was asked by several participants, including Carol Olerud, Organiser of the Benelux Chapter, about the possibility of a live workshop on site in Munich. Chris did not think twice and signalled his willingness to support a workshop in Munich actively and to guide possible participants as a mentor on site. In 2021, the plans for a live workshop in Munich by the Benelux Chapter became concrete, and the two chapter organisers, Carol and Chris, agreed on the workshop’s content and a rough schedule. In addition, Chris wrote an article for the Benelux Chapter magazine to actively promote the workshop.

“I have not experienced such a homogeneous and considerate group for a long time!” At the beginning of 2022, the time was set for the workshop to take place between 03 June and 06 June 2022. Three members of the RPS and two non-members who had already participated in other events of the Benelux Chapter registered as participants for the workshop. During the workshop, it became clear that this number of participants was precisely the right one to provide each participant with enough space for taking photos during the visits to the different stations.

During the workshop, a total of 13 underground stations were visited. At each station, there was first a short introduction to the architecture and the architect’s intention behind it. Afterwards, Chris showed the participants possible subjects for their photographs. He also briefed on his photographic equipment and how he uses it for architectural photography. After that, the participants could explore and photograph their motifs. Chris actively assisted the participants as a mentor.

“It’s incredible how clean Munich’s underground stations are!” Of course, attention was also paid to taking sufficient breaks to give an insight into the culture of life in Bavaria. Chris chose the underground stations to be visited according to their favourite location to one of the many beer gardens in Munich.
In addition to the underground stations, Chris took the time to visit one or two of Munich’s architectural highlights with the participants. This loosened up the workshop and enabled the participants to capture above-ground motifs in pictures.
In the middle of the workshop, the opinion circulated among the participants that every underground station in Munich has its above-ground beer garden, Which, of course, is not true! But what is not can still be.
At the end of each day, the participants met for a joint dinner in Munich’s traditional breweries to round off the day with a cold beer and good food. Of course, the previous day was discussed in detail, and the schedule for the next day was announced.

I am a Scottish photographer, who has been based in Amsterdam since 1997. My interest in photography started with 35mm film, mainly in black and white. I did stop temporary, due to be no longer being able to manual focus a camera, when I was diagnosed with having an eye disease. I restarted with photography in 2006 when I got my first digital SLR camera, allowing me to use the auto focus feature. I have been a member of the RPS since about 2009 and joined Benelux Chapter in 2010, obtaining my LRPS in 2011. During 2010 and 2018 I mainly focused on HDR photography, cityscapes of Amsterdam and Glasgow. I also have an interest in creating black and white images using HDR.
In 2018, I attempted with my photography to show the problems that I have with my eyesight. It took me over a year to figure out how to demonstrate this, with a comparison between my eyesight with corrected glasses and “normal vision. In June 2021 I obtained my ARPS with the documentary panel “Damaged Retinas”. After attending a RPS Benelux Chapter workshop on “Creative in Camera”, I also create images using intention camera movement or using multiple exposures. My equipment is a Canon 5D mark III with either a 24 – 105 mm or 50 mm lens. In the München metro I used the 24 – 105 mm lens.

I live in Brussels and consider myself an urban photographer. I love cityscapes, architecture, and street photography and enjoy occasional landscape shots during holidays. I started photography in 2014 and what was a hobby became quickly a passion. Photography is my way to convey positive emotions through dynamic perspectives or motion, through symmetry, contrasts, vibrant colors, etc. Metro stations are one of my favourite “photographic playgrounds”. I started several metro series in Brussels around the architecture of the stations, the metro art and the ‘happy feet’ of commuters. I love to reveal the hidden beauty of the underground world,
which often remains unnoticed to the thousands of commuters passing by every day. One of my project is “metro creatures”, showing fantastic beasts and aliens in underground stations through observation, imagination and a combination of timing and the right angle. I started the series in Brussels and over time expanded it to metro stations in other cities. I was very lucky to be invited to join the RPS workshop in the Munich metro and be able to complement my metro pictures with some shots of the amazingly graphic and colourful Munich stations and to enrich my metro creatures collection. A very big thank to our fantastic guide and mentor Chris Renk!

I am an amateur photographer, originally from Portugal. After several years living in the US and Italy, I have been living in Belgium since 1998. I love nature and probably because of that I am passionate about landscape photography. But I enjoy photography in general and I often get out of my comfort zone and do very different things such as architecture, portrait, or even street photography. When photographing close to home, I often do it alone. However, I also love travelling to nice photographic locations in the company of a few fellow photographers. I have a long “bucket list” of places which I would like to photograph, and the Covid pandemic was a hard

blow to all my travel plans, but I hope to get back on the road and re-start visiting some iconic places for landscape photography. But I also take pleasure in finding interesting places to photograph near home, so the last years have not been completely wasted. My focus in that period has been on woods, some birds and a bit of urban landscapes/architecture. When the Benelux and Germany chapters of the RPS decided to join forces to organise a weekend photographing the Munich metro stations, I jumped on the opportunity. Nice company, lots of photo opportunities and just the plain possibility of getting away for a few days were things I did not want to miss! And, as always with this type of activity, I learned a lot!

I’m an Australian Dutch woman living in The Netherlands since 1993, married to a Swede, we have three grown children. Photography has been my passion since before I was twelve, when I got my first camera of my own! I mostly took photos of places I’d been to and of people I knew.
photography are my main interests, however I do have knowledge of all the various genres. Organising this workshop with Chris Renk was excellent, he took care of us in Munich and we all had an excellent time.
Only in 1997 did I join my first photo club and since then I’ve never looked back.
Five of us from Belgium and The Netherlands joined in. I look forward to seeing all our results, we have a Zoom session planned on 13th July.
My hobby grew well out of hand and now consumes me. Documentary, Contemporary, People and Street
Thanks Chris for the fabulous organisation in Munich, we learnt a lot and we really enjoyed ourselves!

MEMBER’S PHOTO WORK 2nd quarter 2022 Every quarter, Members are asked to send in their best photos of the current quarter to provide stimulation for the others.
T
his quarter once again shows how different the photographic orient ation is bet ween the members of the German chapter.
Siegfried Rubbert again showed his fable for Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) and produced a fascinating work of art.
Grahame Soden pursued his passion for sports photography and attended the Berlin Formula E 2022.
Horst Witthüser, on the other hand, concentrated on abstract photography this quarter and produced an exciting work of art.
Martin Gerling, who is currently working intensively on his A-Panel, dealt with night photography and the colours that go with it.
On the other hand, I once again went to eye level with nature and photographed a snail looking for food.

ANTHONY CUTLER Discover what Anthony Cutler tells us about his approach to the German Chapter’s latest exhibition theme and how he translated it into his photographs.
T
he question, „What is your photographic or artistic style“? comes up regularly in conversation with other photographers.
I have always had a problem with this and question if I am the best person to give an answer. Style is something that is always changing, subject to the latest technical developments and the ever variable whims and fads of the day. What is important is that a photograph must have content, something that makes a viewer stop and look. It is said, „you only have 10 seconds to catch the eye before the viewer moves on“.

The photographer must be personally involved when creating something with substance and meaning. How can one define „style“? A possible description is: Characteristic visual appearance, or more simply stated: Form, position, size. Is there a better definition for photographers? Instead of style how about: „Personal Vision“ -? In other words: Fantasy, conception, perception. This is now the theme for our next exhibition and I have no choice but to try and find a solution.

E
very year, pandemics permitting, Leipzig, Germany, hosts one of the largest gathering of Goths on the planet. I was there to photograph it a few years ago.
A lot of press and freelance photographers congregate on the approach to this area and usually the Goths on their way to the party will pose for photographs in front of a colourful graffiti-wall.
The Goths meet up in & around the town centre, near to the main station, which is where I took most of these images - most of the Goths are more than happy to be photographed in their regalia.
I think I used a 70-200mm lens on a full-frame Canon, but anything that you’d normally use for street photography will do.
There is a special “party area” a short tram-ride from the centre of Leipzig where entry is restricted to those in costume, and an entry fee is charged. From memory it was quite expensive to get in there and I don’t think photography was permitted anyway.

I was probably shooting at f4 or f5.6 most of the time to blur the background, and there’s not much action involved so a low iso is ok. I tend nowadays to use auto iso and perhaps a higher shutter speed than necessary I’m getting older!

“See too the range of ages taking part, and notice their expressions - from happy to melancholic.” I converted my images to black & white. I like b&w as I grew up in a black & white analogue world and, for this set, I wanted viewers to look past the red fake blood & startling hair colours to see how much time & money the participants spent on their elaborate costumes and accessories.
There is plenty of accommodation, restaurants & bars, plus a really good zoo, all at reasonable prices.
See too the range of ages taking part, and notice their expressions - from happy to melancholic.
It has good transport options, including a regular express bus to & from Berlin, and The Wave Gotik Treffen for 2023 has already been scheduled for 26th - 29th May - so plenty of time to get your equipment dusted off and your travel plans made!
Leipzig is a great place for photography even when the Goths are not there.

Being in the former East, Leipzig still has some unrenovated properties and artisan ateliers, any of which can catch a photographer’s eye.

After the RPS Journal is published by an external company, the rules for contributions and the recording of events are more restrictive.
Since the magazine is published by the chapter itself, we are very flexible concerning the time schedule for submission of texts, pictures and dates for events.
As an indication, a lead time of 2 months can be assumed for the inclusion of articles in the journal. Events of the German Chapter are automatically included in the journal if they are published on the Chapter website under the heading Event.
In order not to make the editor’s life too complicated, we ask for a sufficient amount of time in advance. As a rule, contributions should be received by the editor about 30 days before the publication date.
2ND QUARTER 2023: 30.06.2023 Please send us the photos with a minimum resolution of 3000 x 3000 pixels and 300dpi. For the naming of the photos please use following naming convention:
Here the lead time is about one month before the publication of the journal. Please note this when planning events and articles.
Otherwise, simply inform us that you need some additional time for the creation of a contribution. The publication dates, please take from the adjacent column.
