Furthermore you donʼt have to be a member of the RPS, or indeed any organisation, to attend.
You said you wanted a face-to-face AV day in the North West Youʼve got One! Our ace graphics artist Andrew Gagg has been beavering away producing our posters. Our speakers have all been locked in. Weʼve been writing articles, pushing our posters to everywhere we can think of. Sheila Haycox has been sorting out the event on the RPS website. Malcolm Imhoff has been managing our interface to the IAC magazine. Keith Watson has agreed to be our in-house photographer for the day. Alastair Taylor has kindly agreed to be MC. Adrian Battersby and I are chief worriers and trouble shooters for the day! I am sure I have forgotten someone, but itʼs been a team effort. If Iʼve forgotten anyone ‒ I apologise now!

Weʼve still got stuff to do. Mainly promotion, promotion and more promotion. Our aim is not to beg people to come, because we donʼt need to. We just need to make sure everyone out there knows what a damn fine event itʼs going to be. The tickets should be at least twice the price for this luxury high-spec boutique cinema, but thanks to generous RPS AV Group sponsorship, they are at their usual very reasonable levels. Whilst weʼre supplying free tea and coffee plus excellent biscuits with your ticket, donʼt forget to bring your lunch. The Northwest Computer Museum next door also has a little cafe where you can buy something if your sandwich making is not up to scratch, or youʼve left your butties on the kitchen table. The ticket office will be open from January the 2nd 2026 When I wrote the first part of this article, which came out in the end of the year AV News, it was early September and the Northwest AV day was still over 6 months in the future. Plenty of time, way, way ahead. Iʼm now writing this piece at the end of November, and the emails have been flying backwards and forwards. I canʼt believe how many video calls weʼve had, WhatsApp, Facetime and Zoom. How did we manage without the technology? The pace is hotting up.
So its now up to you If youʼre reading this over someoneʼs shoulder, you should know that you donʼt have to be an RPS AV Group member or even a member of the RPS. So, if you know anyone whoʼs into AV, or interested in having a bash, or simply likes watching excellent AVs, buy them a ticket and bring them along.

Weʼve got an amazing day lined up for you. Paul Kittel ‒ BAFTA-nominated director/cameraman will talk about video and AV and his experiences. Colin Balls - one of the countries best-loved AV workers will show some of his award-winning AVʼs. John Smith ‒ a former audio professional, well known for his work with the LCPU, the Wilmslow AV group and as Focal Points editor, will talk about sound editing. Plus, you will have the opportunity to show your own AVʼs. Either for Entertainment, a show and tell, or if youʼd like some advice, critique etc. from AV experts such as Linda and Edgar Gibbs, Malcolm Imhoff, and others.

Linda and Edgar Gibbs
Linda Gibbs MPAGB, AV-AFIAP Linda, a retired NHS Director, lives in Cardiff. She is a member of Gwynfa Camera Club, and it was there, forty years ago that she saw her first Audio Visual presentation. Since discovering the medium, Linda produces AVs jointly with her husband, Edgar. She enjoys the production side of AV and uses her art college background to develop the creative aspects of their AVs, plus the script writing and sound track elements. She has judged AV competitions at regional, national, and international level, and is looking forward to judging the 2026 MidPhot AV Competition. As well as good production values, Linda considers that the entertainment value of an AV is an important factor. She will also be looking for an engaging and emotional storyline that works well in combination with the visual and sound aspects of the AV.

Edgar Gibbs FRPS, MPAGB, AV-AFIAP Edgar, a retired chartered civil engineer, lives in Cardiff and is a member of Gwynfa Camera Club, just north of the city. It was there that he saw his first Audio Visual presentation in March 1985. Taken with the use of light and images blending together with a soundtrack, he began to make AV jointly with his wife, Linda. Edgar especially enjoys the photographic aspect of AV production and using Photoshop and other programmes to create the images for their AVs. He is also very involved with the script and music aspect of making their AVs. Edgar has judged AV competitions at regional, national, and international level, and is looking forward to judging the 2026 MidPhot AV Competition. He strongly believes that both the images and sound are of equal importance and additionally must be of the best quality.
Location: The Priory Centre, Church Road, Stretton, Burton on Trent, DE13 0HE Free parking is available on site. Attendees will be charged £9.00 a person Refreshments (tea, coffee and biscuits) will be available from 9:30am, at lunchtime and while the judges are making their final decisions. Lunches will not be available, so you should bring a packed lunch.

The 2026 IAC Peter Coles International AV Competition
The Judges Ron Davies FRPS FIPF EFIAP FACI(M), Chairman
Ron needs no introduction as he is a well-known and highly respected figure in the AV world. He has been producing AVs since 1986. Most of them are of human interest with a strong emotional content. Some are true stories based on his Welsh lifescripting and language. He has a formidable reputation abroad, has attended numerous festivals across Europe, and has developed a strong awareness of other countriesʼ “styles”. He has been invited to judge in many of those countries, as well as Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. Ron “retired” from making AVs in 2020 after his sound system broke, and appropriately the 2019 Peter Coles competition was the last International AV competition he won. Peter Coles was a very close friend of Ronʼs and he regards it as a great honour to have been asked to chair this jury. In selecting the awards he will be looking for AVs with integrity, human interest, emotion and excellent production qualities.

The 2026 IAC Peter Coles International AV Competition
The Judges Linda Gough FACI
Lindaʼs first introduction to AV, many years ago, was at the IACʼs yearly competition weekend, then called the Geoffrey Round Competition and organised by Peter Coles, which she remembers as always a ʻmust seeʼ programme. She followed the move to Bradford, and it was there she was asked to be a judge for the first time, alongside two kind and experienced fellow judges Keith Scott and Jean-Pierre Simon. When the competition moved to Capel Curig, both Linda and her husband Mike were regular visitors. Linda has judged before with Ron and says she has done her fair share of both washing up and judging! Linda has judged film at all levels and feels there is a true connection between what is needed to make a good film and a good AV. For her, any sequence needs to flow to the rhythm of the subject. It needs timing, framing, editing, choice of music and good narration when used to hold the audienceʼs interest. She is very happy to be working with fellow judges Ron and Adrian.

The 2026 IAC Peter Coles International AV Competition
The Judges Adrian Battersby ARPS DPAGB/AV
Adrian originally got into AV around 35 years ago and progressed from two projectors to nine. He has judged quite a few AV competitions over the years, including an RPS International. He has been successful in many major competitions, including winning the Gold Medal in a recent South African International. He is very pleased to be invited to judge the 2026 Peter Coles International and delighted to be working under the chairmanship of his good friend, the legendary Ron Davies. Adrian thinks a good AV should grab the attention, then hold it throughout. Rather than “he was born, he lived, he died” he will be looking for originality, emotion, and of course production quality in both visuals and soundtrack.

JUDGING AND JUDGES: Each judge will view and judge all entries on their own calibrated equipment for the first round of judging. These first results will be collated and the resultant provisional ranking returned to the judging panel. The salon director will host a virtual meeting with the judging panel for them to agree on the acceptance point, finalise the ranking of entries and reach consensus on the award winners. The judging panel will rank the entries and select the acceptances and award winners in line with the prevailing PSSA and FIAP guidelines.

Challenge 321
What is the Challenge 321? The Challenge 321 is an international contest for short Diaporamas with a max runtime of 3:21 Minutes. This short runtime is the "Challenge" for the Authors. The idea of the competition is to have an international exchange of audio-visual work. By submitting their work, authors do participate in several adjudications in different countries. How it works The authors send their AV-sequences to the organisers in Germany by web transfer. The organisers will distribute the AVs to various hosts in several countries for judging. Each host returns a score list and the organisers will create a total result. The best authors receive prizes financed by the entry fees. The Organisers The organisation team consists of Achim Maier and Klaus Fritzsche (all Germany). If you have any questions or comments, let us know. AV News AV News is the journal of the RPS AV Group and is free to all members. If you are an RPS member, but not part of the AV Special Interest Group, a small extra payment on your annual subscription to join the group will give you the opportunity to read this publication and also to take part in regular events, both live and on zoom organised by the group.

Audio Visual One of the most often asked questions which AV lecturers are asked is ʻHow can we use music in our AV without falling fowl of the law?ʼ There are basically four ways: Write the Music Yourself This is probably not an option for most people but perhaps you could get a friend to write it for you. Use Royalty Free Music There are many websites which offer royalty free music, which means that the copyright owner has waived their rights to royalties by licensing the use of the music with its purchase price. Use Creative Commons Music This is a rapidly expanding area of music licensing, where an artist freely publishes music for public use in the hope that their work will eventually become better known.

Use commercially available music under licence In the UK, there is a long-established method for obtaining permission to use copyrighted music in amateur productions, covering both AV and video. Two music industry bodies, the Mechanical Copyright Performance Society (the MCPS), and the British Phonographic Industry (the BPI), issue licences allowing the use of music from legitimately purchased sources to be used in amateur (ie specifically not professional) productions. The MCPS licence protects the rights of the composer, and the BPI licence protects the rights of the publisher. To Credit or not to Credit? You may have noticed the variation or absence of music credits at the end of AV sequences ‒ it all depends on the source of the music used. A peculiarity of the IAC licences (specifically the BPI licence) is that the name of the performing artist must not be credited in the AV sequence, though the name of the piece of music can be (though this is not mandatory). If you choose to use ʻRoyalty-Freeʼ or Creative Commons music however, details of the source of the music are usually a requirement of the licence. Whatever you use, itʼs essential to read the licence agreement to ensure that you are complying with its requirements. Audio Visual, or AV as it is known is a fantastic way of showcasing stunning photographic images linked to a sound track ‒ music, song, poetry, words, sounds, or a combination of these. A particular feature of an AV production is the third image, that wonderful moment when one image dissolves into the next.

TogDays
Togdays was created by me, Phil Jones, a retired software developer, keen amateur photographer, and member of Bebington Photographic Society. I was always looking around to find events and places to go to in order to get new pictures. I would trawl through lists of sports events, looking for something local to me, and note down the dates in a spreadsheet. Every time I saw a Workshop or other event advertised I'd add it to my list. After a while I wondered why there wasn't a central database of all of these. I searched, and couldn't find one - so thought I'd create one myself. So here it is - a central database of places, Events and Presenters that could be of interest to Photographers ('Togs'). The idea is that this database will contain details of Workshops, Photo Walks, Wildlife Hides, Organised Shoots, Sports Events, Historical Reenactments or Battles, and anything else that could be of interest. It has recently been updated to hold details of presenters and tutors who can provide talks or workshops to individuals or clubs. Competition Judges have also been added and have their own section. In time it may also contain Photographic Exhibitions and Competitions. For Photographers, the site will provide a searchable system so that you can filter the events you are interested in, in the areas you want. Every Event will be categorised, and also have a location.
