In 2018 we look forward to many new events and I look forward to seeing as many members and guests attending as possible. If you have an idea for an event and feel it would be supported, please contact me to see if we can organise something for the Southern Region members. We are planning an exhibition of members works later in the year, but we need your help – so do please read the item on that in this newsletter. Photowalks are free to attend and give you a chance to meet local photographers and chat and take photos in an informal setting while having a nice walk, so if there is one near you we would love to see you there (and if there isn't one local, let us know where you would like to see one!) Any news, or images should be emailed to Southern Media (southernmedia@rps.org) for inclusion on the RPS website, (for use on the image slider) or for ideas for blogs And if you attend an event, do please post some images on our Flickrsite(https://www.flickr.com/ groups/ rps_southern/) And as you will see from the contact list below, we have a few areas where we would like a local contact – we are not asking for much time or effort, just someone to help us keep in touch around the region, recommend venues and the like. So if you think you can help, do please let me know.

This day has been organised for all those working towards the Licentiate and Associate assessment. A day open to both members and non-members of the Society, this is intended to assist anyone considering an application to the Distinctions Panels. Tea / coffee provided. Cost: £15 if bringing work (£20 non-members), £10 if observing. Lunch : bring a packed lunch Contact Dave Peckham (davepeckham@mac.com) This event is free to both RPS Member and Non Members alike. However, The Living Rainforest charges a £10.95 entrance fee, which is valid for 1 year and entitles you to free entry as many times as you want to return during the year. Just turn up on the day. At this time of year the harbour is a feast of colour, yachts and activity. The Southern Region is delighted to announce a day with FRPS speakers talking about their work and practices, Graham Harrison (professional photographer with The Telegraph, Vogue, British Museum and others) who will be talking about his work in the media and his current project Photo Histories, and the VicePresident of the RPS, Del Barrett talking about the RPS today and changes on the horizon
An opportunity to combine an early autumn break with a weekend comprising Workshop and Advisory Day, in the heart of St Helier, Jersey.

Lymington Harbour – Paul Cox ARPS
Print Exhibition 2018 In the second half of this year we plan to have a travelling exhibition of the work of some of our members, the format is still being finalised but we will display the prints at our events and also, at any other venues, clubs or meetings we can find or which are suggested to us. So do please think of events or venues where we might display the best prints, and also start to consider which of yours you would like to include. Assuming we have more than we can display, we will ask members to select the final set at our AGM later this year. The format will be as follows: Each member may submit up to 4 prints. All work must be entirely the photographer’s own work. Entries must be mounted, size 50 x 40cm. If submitting by post, packing used for sending the work should be suitable for returning entries. Entry fee plus return postage if required, should be sent with the entry form, cheques payable to ‘RPS Southern’. Each entry should have the title and the photographer’s name and address clearly written on the back. We would plan to hold the prints and exhibit them for up to 6 months before returning to their owners. Please send suggestions or comments on our proposed exhibition to Martin Silman at southernevents@rps.org

AND FINALLY Technical: with winter in progress, do remember that batteries run down more quickly in cold weather, so take spares with you if your are shooting outside for any length of time. The LCD screen is a heavy battery power user so for Landscape shooters it's imperative to take spares along on your shoot. If you are a coastal shooter then keep your lens and camera safe from sea spray and/or dampness in the air - I use a chamois leather as a wrap around and clip it together with bulldog clips
Volunteers Wanted! Have you ever considered volunteering with the RPS? We are currently looking to boost our volunteer group with members who would like to take an active part in the organisation of Southern Region events / advisory days and workshops. In particular we would like to hear from anyone who could take on the Newsletter Editor role and anyone who would like to be part of the Southern Region Committee as a volunteer, sharing ideas and helping our organisation.
