Dear AV Enthusiast This is the first AV News e-xtra of 2021 and there is a lot to look forward to in the coming months. I am delighted, and at the same time almost overwhelmed, by the number of AV events which have been arranged. I have “attended” many of them and been very impressed with how well they’ve been organised and run. The AV community has really taken on line events to heart. Following on from the RPS International Audio Visual Retrospective, we have enjoyed a Celebration of 25 years of the Great Northern Festival with an excellent selection of AVs shown during that weekend. Linda and I were invited to be members of the Advisory Panel for PAGB Awards for Photographic Merit in AV, which was held near Exeter at the end of February last year. Nearly a year later, on 14thFebruary 2021, the Western Counties Photographic Federation (WCPF) will be hosting an Assessment Day for PAGB Awards for Photographic Merit in AV, the first on line AV assessment for which there is a total of 16 applications, across CPAGB, DPAGB and MPAGB. The Assessment will take place over Zoom and will be free to attend. This promises to be an excellent event with none of the usual travel and financial constraints preventing people attending– possibly the way forward for the RPS? Since last September, Linda and I have been members of Wilmslow Guild AV Group, something we couldn’t normally do. An added bonus this year has been that Wilmslow AV Group has been co-ordinating its meetings with Leeds AV Group. We have attended the East Midlands AV day, presented to AV Makers South Africa and continue to enjoy being members of the Western AV Enthusiasts (WAVES), albeit it virtually.

We enjoyed watching the recent on line MidPhot AV Competition, particularly as it brought back happy memories. We both recall getting up early and travelling from Cardiff to Martin Fry's home in Gloucestershire, before continuing our journey to Birmingham. At the venue there were three setups to show the slide - sound sequences: a Royale Projector, 2 Leica straight tray projectors and Martin's Kodak Carousel projectors.There were 3 screens and the judges moved seats to watch each entry. By the time you read this we will have attended the L&CPU AV Competition, which we entered, as we are now members of the Wilmslow AV Group. There is also the forthcoming online IAC Peter Coles AV Competition, for which we also have an entry. The WCPF has its AV Competition in April and as members of WAVES we are preparing our entry for that event as well. The AV Community has been well served by these on line events and I would like to record my appreciation to all those involved. Over the coming months Linda and I are judging Beacon Camera Club and the Essex AV Group local AV competitions, and no doubt there will be many other events that will come to light. The numbers of people watching AVs on line is increasing, but there is no doubt that we are all missing face to face meetings. The dilemma is; can the joy of meeting up face to face be replaced by the fact many more people can see and enjoy AV on line. Although the circumstances have diminished our social interaction, there is still a lot to look forward to, the best thing being us all getting vaccinated, I am getting mine on 13thFebruary, and look forward to the day when we can all meet up again. I will be the first in line to give a hug to both Keith Brown and Keith Leedham, who are very much in our thoughts following their sad losses. Welcome to the Jurassic Coast International AV Salon. This event has taken the place of the previous “Bridgend 5-8 Photo Harmony Competition�, which was successfully run by Bridgend Camera Club from 2008 to 2020. Exmouth Photo Group has taken over the running of the event from 2021, and has expanded the competition into two sections: Photo Harmony and Open. The competition has been granted patronage by the Photographic Society of South Africa, and has been classified as a Salon. Why Jurassic Coast? Exmouth is at the western end of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, which runs for ninety-five miles to Old Harry Rocks in Dorset. Our logo shows the Geoneedle, which marks its start. Closing date 30th April 2021

NEWS RELEASE EAST MIDLANDS AUDIO VISUAL GROUP 21st JANUARY 2021

Saturday January 21st saw the annual competition held by East Midlands Audio Visual Group, which this year was judged by Tony Collinson LRPS DPAGB who also presented a very useful and enjoyable tutorial after the results were announced on the aspects of using AV Studio 10 software. This competition has grown dramatically over the past few years. Once held over two hours on a Tuesday evening it has grown in popularity with its members and has now become an all-day event which is usually on a Saturday. This year, due to the social restrictions, the event was held via the Zoom conferencing platform and non-members from the AV community were also invited to watch the 30 entries and to listen to Tony’s useful critique of them.
There were five trophies for members to compete for. The best “Open” and best “Photo-Harmony” sequences were awarded to Malcolm Imhoff FRPS FACI(M) for “God’s Paintbrush” and “Down by the Henry Moore” respectively. The award for the best Intermediate Producer went to Jim Waddington for his AV entitled, “The Coke Can”. This production also won Jim the “Maggie Imhoff Trophy” for the best Voiceover Sequence. The audience were also invited to vote for their AV which they enjoyed the most from the day, which revealed that the viewers also agreed with Tony as this award also went to “God’s Paintbrush”.
