Seasons Greetings from the AV Group Chair Edgar Gibbs FRPS MPAGB AV-AFIAP
The year 2020 has been a year like no other and the AV Community has responded well using the Zoom word many times and not in a cinematographic way. I wish everyone both a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year and as everyone else, I’m looking forward to a better year in 2021. There are some exciting plans being considered which could include a Celebration of 50 years of Distinctions and an AV Distinctions Advisory Day. The latter may result in the first AV applications for Distinctions under the new Film Digital and Multimedia regulations, 50 years after the first AV Distinction was awarded. There will either be an online Festival or a real or even a combined online/real International Audio Visual Festival in September. The venue in Cheltenham has been booked already. I would like to thank members of the Committee past and present for their work and support in this difficult year. Thank you also to the AV Community for supporting all the AV events put on not only by the RPS but by others. Finally, Seasons Greetings and Best Wishes to you all. Edgar Gibbs FRPS

2020 has been a challenging year for everything, not least the AV world. It’s been very gratifying to see so many groups embracing the new technology that has enabled many AV events to take place on-line, and I’m sure that Zoom will remain a part of our lives long after the Covid restrictions have disappeared. Let’s hope that 2021 will produce a bumper crop of new sequences made during our various lockdowns! My photo shows a mural in Exeter made by chipping the design out of a blank wall, with one of the Christmas lights serving as a crown. Best wishes for a peaceful and safe Christmas! Ian Bateman

Seasons Greetings from Worcester and Very Best Wishes for a much better 2021. It has certainly been a very different year for all of us and a difficult one too. I was lucky to get a short break abroad just before the first lockdown and a few trips slipped in since, but all my main trips were cancelled. Nevertheless I have still managed to get quite a few AVs made and my list shows 14 new ones this year, more than in a ‘normal’ year. Over half were one minute AVs made for the RPS AV Group Facebook challenge, which was so well supported generally and this is just one of the ways in which AVs have been shown more widely in 2020. May this trend continue into 2021 alongside events where we can socialise as we have been able to do in the past.

I for one cannot wait to hear The Queens Christmas message this year. During the 12months we have become experts at online shopping and attending Zoom multi-media meetings, and what a God send that was for keeping in touch with loved ones. None more so than the RPS AV Group which held a wonderful celebration of the National Audio-Visual Championships amongst other things through that media. But, despite how thankful we may be for Zoom it will of course never replace viewing AV’s on a big screen in high definition with wonderful sound, which as AV producers is exactly how we wish our work to be seen. For some of you it is the joy of attending an AV event, not just to be inspired from other AV’s but to chat with old (and new) friends during the intervals. Now with the remarkable introduction of Covid vaccines those days are set to return in 2021 and I look forward in seeing an abundance of new AV sequences and to just enjoy meeting friends and family. Will we ever forget Covid? I doubt it. In so many ways it will change all of our lives, some of it for the better but also perhaps for the worse too. I think we will all appreciate the simpler things in life, like complaining about waiting to be served in a pub (bliss) and going to the cinema to watch the latest Bond movie. We are probably still a few months away until we can say good riddance to Covid19, nonetheless the light is at the end of the tunnel. We can soon look forward to a wonderful AV year in 2021. I send my best wishes to you all for a very merry Christmas, although this year my sincerest wishes to everyone is for a wonderful New Year. Keith Watson Secretary – RPS AV Group

Let’s hope the New Year brings us a little more cheer, however I will say the AV World has managed, with the help of Zoom, to join together AV workers from around the world. A considerable bond of friendship to the AV Community has evolved and we have been able to see more AVs than usual throughout the year. International Audio Visual Festival Programmes In trying to complete the archive of all of the RPS International Audio Visual Festivals I need scans of the following The 1st Festival programme 1974 The 2nd Festival programme 1976 The 3rd Festival programme 1978 The 15th Festival programme 2002 The 16th Festival programme 2004 It does not matter if they are written on as no one will know who wrote the comments anyway unless they recognise your writing. Celebration of 50 years of RPS Distinctions in Audio Visual
In trying to establish whether we can hold a Celebration of Distinctions, I would like to know the names and email addresses of the people who hold RPS AV Distinctions. Some people have Distinctions in various genres e.g. LRPS in Travel, an ARPS in AV and an FRPS in Nature.It is only the AV Distinction you hold that counts. .If you have progressed through the various levels and have an LRPS in AV, an ARPS in AV and an FRPS in AV, I only need details of the higher level i.e. the FRPS in AV. I also require the date you received the Distinction and the title(s) of the AVs that formed your submission. If you are able to help please will you fill in the form below and return it to me as it would help in planning whether an event is feasible.I’ve put this on a separate page so you can “Print current page” fill it in and send it back as either a pdf or jpg Edgar Gibbs.
