Welcome By Paul Cox ARPS (Regional Organiser)
Dear Members, Hello and welcome to our final newsletter for 2021. There is no doubt that this year has been a difficult one mentally, socially and physically. And we have all suffered either directly or indirectly from the effects of Covid-19 and subsequent lockdowns. When the pandemic started the Society withdrew from all meetings and events that required in-person attendance, and that has remained in place until very recently As a Regional Organisation, we’ve had great success and attendance to the ‘virtual meetings’ / workshops we’ve held during 2021 and I would like to thank David Ashcroft LRPS for organising the Sony event and for hosting his own workshop on Infrared photography, also my thanks go to Dave Peckham ARPS for hosting his own [ever popular] ‘digital processing’ workshop, and big thanks go to Antony Topham and Chris Tank for hosting Antony’s workshop on the use of the Snapseed App for editing smartphone images, and last, but not least, many thanks to Bhupinder Ghatahora for her workshop on Light Painting with Smartphones. All of these events were made available to RPS members, and non-members alike, and attracted both UK and International attendees. The Society has now lifted the restriction on in-person attended meetings and events and is slowly reintroducing them into its own calendar. However, we all know that the popularity of such gatherings is subject to people’s appetite for them. We, the Southern Region volunteer committee, find this re-opening of the Society very exciting and encouraged and are going to follow their lead with high anticipation. By the time you read this we will have already kicked off our in-person attended events this year with a meet-up / photo walk at Kingley Vale Woods near Chichester. We will be quickly following that with another meet-up for a Newbury Canal photo-walk on November 26th. Our first return to in-person attended Advisory Days is on 12th December at Old Basing Hall where both Licentiate and Associate (Visual Art) panels will be receiving advice from our own Bhupinder Ghatahora ARPS (Licentiate panels) and Paul Mitchell FRPS (Associate Visual Art). We are following on into 2022 with a comprehensive package for you, our members, that includes Advisory Days, workshops, meet-ups and talks. Our schedule is currently being finalised but, you can see, and note, our plans in this newsletter. And there’s lots of other great content for you to read including introductions from the volunteer team and members photos. Have a great Christmas, and I hope to see you at one or other of our events in 2022.

© Paul Rigg ARPS Windy Day I have shown this image because it has generated some discussion in the past. I found people wanted to know the origin of the image; where was it shot? Is it shot as seen or a composite? Who is the person in it? Camera settings? Best done in monochrome. I asked people what they thought were the answers to their own questions and always got different replies and it dawned on me that the image meant different things to different people, and most were not the reality. What’s more, other people’s versions of the image were nearly always more interesting than the reality! That is, not telling observers about the shot made the image more appealing. This actually fits with my view that photography is about the image and not the process. Yes, the journey is fine but arriving is best.

I was recently having a nostalgic review of some of my back catalogue and came across this view of Tenby. I took this at daybreak on an early December morning but, it reminded me of my first holiday with ‘my mates’, mid 1970’s in Tenby. We had driven (cars) and rode (Scooters) from the Midlands overnight at the start the annual Industry Summer Holiday Fortnight no M6, M5, M50 or M4, all A roads – and arrived at © Sue –Phillips daybreak on Saturday morning ready to ‘paint the town red’ for the week from our various B&B’s. Oh, The image wasand taken on 8th January 2020…. those halcyon hedonistic carefree days. Looking down at the wall of the lock at Aldermaston Wharf. I used my Olympus E-M5MarkII, creating a double exposure in the camera. The final image has been cropped to a square format. This image was hand-held at the settings below: f-4 at 1/30 of a second, ISO 2500. Why Volunteer
Why I joined the RPS I joined the RPS more for social reasons than anything else but with the thought that I might be able to use my photographic experience to perhaps help less experienced photographers improve their skills. However, after joining I was sort of coerced into applying to the Southern Region committee as a volunteer by two former members. I originally contacted the then RO who, at the time as I learnt later, was unfortunately quite unwell. After not hearing anything at the time a little while later I was contacted by the new RO Pail Gilmore who asked if I'd care to join his committee and the rest as the saying goes is history. David Ashcroft and myself joined the committee at the same time and both have now been volunteers for about 8 years. Dave Peckham ARPS

Why Volunteer
I first came into contact with the RPS when labouring over my LRPS attempt and realised how much I had learned as a consequence of the distinction process and that it would be "cool" to become involved with the organisation. I found the aims of the RPS compatible with my own photographic aspirations and that the people I met during RPS events were enthusiastic and helpful in equal measure. I learned that the RPS cannot exist in its present form without a small army of volunteers making it work so I became a "foot soldier" as a member of the Southern Region Committee. My advice to anyone considering volunteering is - go for it; you will meet some great people and be making one of the premier photography societies continue.

Call for Volunteers Volunteering As Covid-19 (and RPS) restrictions start to lift and in-person meetings and events can return to our schedule of advisory days, workshops, presentations, and meet-ups we are about to become increasingly busy and active in the Region. To be able to achieve what we would like to we have some vacancies for Volunteers, both general and for specific roles. We would like to hear from members who are considering helping out in the Region and from members who would consider taking on the roles of either Southern Publishing Editor and Southern Media Editor. The Publishing Editor is the go-to person for organising newsletter content and publishing newsletters and (perhaps) an annual magazine. The Social Media Editor is the go-to person for social media content and publishing the content on our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts. Both roles have impact on our members facing contact and are therefore important to the Region. If you are interested in helping out in the Region, we are always looking for help in rolling out our vision for more presence in all parts of the Region, East, West, North and South So, if you would like to put yourself forward for either the two specific roles (Social Media and Publishing Editors) or to lend help as a Volunteer in general please get in touch by email to southern@rps.org or by phone on 07748 115057.
