Notes from your RO What a start to 2019, having the pleasure of attending the new RPS headquarters in Bristol in March, such a step forward for the society, with a great gallery and exhibition space. My visit coincided with IPE 161, this year’s International Photography Exhibition. On show were 100 beautiful, strong and accomplished images by 54 contemporary photographers, and the exhibition is currently on tour around the UK, including Hull from the 4th October until the 27th, and is well worth a visit. It was very encouraging to see so many photographers at the recent RPS Yorkshire AGM & Members Day, where several displays of first class photographs were on show, including some from a number of Special Interest Groups, camera clubs and the YPU. (see photographs on page 3). Our first guest speaker was Jane Lazenby BA(hons) Fine Art, ASEA, UKCPS, LRPS, BPE2*, CPAGB who combined her life-long love of horses, art and photography into a personal story. After lunch, Les Forrester BA (hons) Photography, ARPS, DPAGB, EFIAP, BPE3* gave a talk entitled ‘My Vision My Photography’ in which he explained how his interests in architecture and other genres have inspired him to develop his vision. Both speakers demonstrated how they visualise the final photograph before pressing the shutter and capturing the digital raw image. At the AGM I officially took over from Mary who will be staying on as a committee member for the region, along with other rolls within the RPS. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mary for all her hard work and dedication to the RPS and the region over these past years and wish her all the best in the new roll. Mark Slater

JUNE 2019 YORKSHIRE REGION Simon Hill ABIPP FRPS “Fellow of the RPS Receives National Award” Yorkshire based professional photographer, Simon Hill ABIPP FRPS, received national recognition for his editorial and portrait photography when he was named Professional Photographer of the Year at the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) National Awards 2019 held at The Photography Show in March. Simon lives in North Yorkshire and specialises in editorial, documentary and heritage photography. His work has appeared in National Geographic Magazine, the Observer Magazine and the Sunday Time Magazine as well as numerous books and periodicals. He joined the RPS as a schoolboy and became a Fellow of the Society in 1991. He is also a member of Harrogate Photographic Society.
Hello members of the Yorkshire Region Quite a short message from me this edition, to say a massive thank you to everyone who attended the Yorkshire Members Day and Regional AGM, and in particular the Regional Committee for all their hard work over the past year, and a special thank you for the beautiful flowers presented to me on the day. You are in very capable hands with Mark Slater, newly appointed Regional Organiser and the team. Although some of us have changed roles, and others have moved in, we’ll still be around at many of the events and I’ll continue to help the Committee deliver their program across the region in the future years. My stepping back from the Regional Organiser role is two fold as I have previously stated – the region needed a much fresher approach and felt it was right to bring on new blood to take this forward. Secondly I felt I could offer something further being involved in the Society’s educational programme, so have joined the team in Bristol [as a volunteer]. My view and aim is that once we have an understanding of the growing identification of education and links between the RPS and all educational institutes we can establish greater relationships between the two. This will help all regions to engage with our strategy and missions as well as developing a greater program for our members and associates.

Simon’s award-wining portfolio - The English in Particular - is a series of over thirty environmental portraits, mostly taken in Yorkshire, which seeks to celebrate “the commonplace, the local, the vernacular and the distinctive”. Each portrait is of a person associated with a particular characteristic of quintessential England inspired by the book “England in Particular” by Sue Clifford and Angela King (published in 2006). Members from across the region attended, along with a few visiting members from a range of camera clubs and photographic societies. Ever considered creating a PhotoBook? A display of photobooks, and a selection of some of the equipment required to create your own, were made available in South Yorkshire for anyone to view, along with a display of images by John Pyatt FRPS, at Swinton Library, near Rotherham. John’s work was accompanied by photobooks from other dedicated members, including Andrew Foley ARPS and Don Harris FRPS and others (top photo). Details about bookmaking were available to see and sample on the table of equipment which Don had made to create his own books and photobooks from printed photographs. (lower photo). John’s photography exhibition entitled ‘Used Bookshops’, displayed many characters who had built up large collections of used books, for resale. A display of film photography equipment, including that belonging to John and Don, was also on show.
