Notes from your RO Hello and Goodbye, After eight years as the Yorkshire Regional Organiser I am now stepping aside. This will be my final newsletter and I would like to personally thank all the committee members and everyone else who has supported me throughout the years. It is testament to the region and members that the committee have worked tirelessly to provide a varied and sustained calendar of events throughout. I for one am looking forward to a continued and possibly even broadened range of photographic activities for the membership. Although stepping down as RO, I hope to stay on the committee with just one function and that will be to deliver the new ‘Photography Development to Distinctions’ formerly the Self Help Groups, and help with other regional events, where possible.

January 2019 will see further changes for the regional committee, not only the RO but also our current Treasurer, Robert Helliwell ARPS, will be stepping down after six years and Geoff Blackwell ARPS who you might recognise as the past Society Treasurer will take over from Robert. Furthermore the committee have expanded, co-opting new members Leigh Foster and Chris Hodgson, taking responsibility for events such as the advisory days and photo shoot days, giving a greater accomplishment in providing a varied calendar of events. And with that note, my parting farewell, I wish Mark much success and look forward to working with the new committee also to seeing many of you at the forthcoming events. Mark has been co-opted onto the regional committee with this role being his sole purpose; he will be officiated to the role at the AGM and Members Day in April 2019.

..and from our new RO… I have been interested in photography most of my life, but really got serious whilst serving in the Army where I was the regimental photographer. After being injured on active service, which put an end to my military career, I have had the opportunity to work in both the private and public sectors and I am currently the Head of IT for a national conservation charity, with its head office in Doncaster. My wife, Sharon, and I have 3 grown up children and we’ve been foster carers for more than 10 years. We live in Penistone, where I volunteer for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service as a Community First Responder. In my spare time I love nothing more than being outdoors with my camera in hand. As a Scuba Diving Instructor I also teach underwater photography and can often be found in the Farne Islands diving and photographing the seals and other wildlife in the area. I consider myself fortunate to be taking on this roll in what is the biggest geographical region within the Society and with your support we can build upon Mary’s hard work and take the region forward over the coming years.
A Team Day Out for Regional Volunteers. 2018 presented an opportunity for all Regions and Groups to apply for a Team Volunteer Event, through Nicola Young, the recent Volunteer Manager. Each team’s application was considered against certain criteria, but in essence it was to give something back to the volunteers who help to run the Society, locally. Our Region’s application was successful and a day of Architectural Photography, led by Interior Architectural Photographer Craig Magee, was arranged for the committee members and some of our most ardent volunteers. Craig Magee runs similar workshops from his base in Liverpool, but team members decided that Leeds could offer just as many architectural opportunities. After a short, but very informative briefing by Craig, the team walked from their base at The Tetley to the Victoria Quarter, after completing several ‘pre-arranged’ access and permission documents, then moved on to the Corn Exchange and the Waterfront, all with typically attractive interiors and scenery. Craig spent one-to-one time with each of us, providing guidance and capturing a few images himself. Following our few hours of photography, we returned to The Tetley for Craig to share more revelations in post processing images to create an appealing brochure style configuration. The HOW TO and what to avoid with such images, some small changes can make a big difference if you know what to look for and how to make relevant changes without affecting the image drastically or over processing. A ‘team day out’ for Regional Volunteers, continued.
The feedback from everyone reflected an overwhelming success - ‘we hadn’t expected such a mix of activity on the day’ - ‘we all took something away from the day’ - ‘it achieved what it was initially set out to do, a team day together, sharing knowledge, skills and thoughts about photography at places we’d all wanted to visit, but never seemed to find the time’.
