I have nearly finalised the RPS International AV Festival work and after writing Chair’s Chatter I started to think about watching the Great Northern Festival. This reminded me of taking a carrier bag of Christmas cards, and along with many others, distributing them at the event. As this will not be possible I would like to invite you to submit a digital Christmas card with words to go in to the “Christmas Edition” of AV News e-xtra. There are some rules as you would expect. �
The photograph must be one you have taken

Copying a commercial Christmas card is not allowed

It must be your own work and not done using a commercial template
�
Your Christmas message must be brief
� The file size of your card must be small enough to send in by email to AVChair@rps.org Approx 1920px on the long edge would be ideal. Martin Addison has kindly offered to prepare this Christmas Edition and he would like all cards by 1st December. Andrew Gagg is going to prepare a Christmas Graphic to set it off. This Christmas Edition is in environmental terms “sustainable” Creating a card will keep your hand in with Photoshop, although other software packages are available. I hope you both like the idea and will support it by sending in your card. Not buying and posting cards will save money, so should you wish you could make a donation to a charity of your choice. We would like to know if you did but we do not want to know how much your donation was. I am looking forward to a positive response. Edgar

MIDPHOT 2020 AV Competition
The Judges … Andrew. N. Gagg FRPS from Worcester Andrew’s been a keen photographer from the age of eleven, although he came late to the world of AV, having been busy for much of his working life at the BBC and in many different live theatres before that. Making up for lost time, he has produced a handful of winning sequences in his own inimitably varied style, always deeply personal and always as highly polished as he can make them. It goes without saying that top quality photography and sound are of the essence, but he also sets great store by the presentation of his sequences, convinced of the importance of good graphics and meaningfully delivered narration. Bryan Stubbs ARPS from Leeds I started making AVs about 18 years ago at a time when slide sound sequences were slowly being overtaken by digital.I have only ever made digital AVs. The medium appealed to me straight away as a means of giving meaning to my photography. I’ve been a keen photographer for as long as I remember.To me AV is about storytelling whether it be with a voice over or not. The audio is as important as the images. I’ve been secretary of Leeds AV group for too many years, about 15 or so and Yorkshire organiser for the RPS AV group for about 13 years.I’ve been a judge for several AV competitions including the RPS Nationals and twice for the Great Northern and am looking forward to being part of the judging team for the Midphot AV competition. Judging can never be a truly logical process. We all come to it with our own likes and dislikes, and I feel privileged to be asked to comment on other people’s work. Jeff Mansell CPAGB/AV from Blythe Bridge I have been taking photographs for 60 years, starting with my dad's box camera.I saw my first audio visual in 1985 produced by a member of my camera club. This inspired me to have a go and I showed my first audio visual sequence there in 1986, using separate hand-controlled projectors and live narration.I continued to make them using slide/tape, and later digitally and had some success in regional competitions. I joined Wilmslow Guild AV group in 1999, becoming a member of the committee in 2005.I enjoy making sequences with other people and have had some success

nationally.I gained my CPAGB AV in 2015. I have experience judging both local and national competitions. I enjoy making documentaries, so I will be looking for good compact scripts, the right choice of music, if used, good quality photography and a well-structured production. New in 2022 … In the 2022 Competition, we have a new award for narrative, including writing, delivery, fluency & expressiveness. This award has been donated by one of this year’s judges and 2021 Competition winner Andre. N. Gagg FRPS. This is likely to be a much sought after trophy and is at the heart of Audio-Visual Excellence.
Finally … The competition in 2021 took us by surprise with the highest number of entries for many a year – so much so that we had to have an extra judging session on the Friday evening. With a return to normal, lets hope for a record number of entries and some topclass entries. With all that time you have had at home during the past eighteen months, you have had plenty of time to give it a go The winner of the 2021 Photo Harmony Competition was a first-time entrant and relatively new to the wonder world of Audio Visual where you will always be among a friendly and fun bunch of like minded individuals. If you haven’t given it a go, now is the time … We look forward to welcoming you to the 2022 event whether an entrant of a member of the audience.

RPS Great Yorkshire AV Day
RPS AV Day via Zoom Nov 21st 2021 starting at 10.30 Photography has been my main hobby since 1986 and I belong to two clubs in Devon plus AV Groups. I am a past Chairman of Exmouth Photo Group and also a past Secretary for 18 years and set up their website in 1999 and now their webmaster. My first foray into AVs was when I used to take the grandchildren out on trips and would put the photographs to music of “their choice” which of course was completely the wrong music but they still watch them 20 years later just for a laugh. I then started taking Audio Visual more seriously and of course in the first instance just put images from my trips to music. My first successful AV was Return to Paris to which I added narration and still stands the test of time. I have been inspired over the years by going to AV festivals and competitions and am finding that the AV world is progressing so much, particularly since Covid, Zoom has opened up so many opportunities for learning and encouraging more and more still image photographers.

RPS Great Yorkshire AV Day
Over the years I have gained distinctions in both prints and AVs. I have two ARPS Distinctions, one in prints and one in AV which I gained in 2012. A DPAGB in AV was awarded in 2011 and was very pleased to be awarded an MPAGB/AV in 2016 and now find that I am doing more and more in the AV world. I have also been fortunate enough to have won a few awards in the various AV International and National competitions I have entered and was not only delighted but stunned to have been selected as Champion Audio Visual Worker in the Tauranga Photographic Society 2021 AV Salon. I thoroughly enjoy doing presentations to clubs which are usually a variety of different genres of AVs as I like to offer something for everyone, which could be documentaries, humour, photo harmony and nature. I make AVs to entertain people, they are not all by any means competition AVs but do make a variety of different types of AV. Timetable The meeting starts at 10.30 ( Zoom Doors 10.00) with attendees’ sequences. This is your chance to show off your work and get some kind, helpful comments on improving it or maybe just saying how wonderful it is. This is always an important and enjoyable part of our day so please send in your AVs. Please send your sequences to Tony Collinson using WeTransfer from https// www.wetransfer.com Tony’s email address is tcollin798@aol.com Please do not send any AVs until after Sunday Oct 24th as Tony is away. But you can be thinking about them! The meeting is free of charge BUT you must book in advance by emailing me. If you wish to send a sequence please include on the email the title and the length of it. Sequences will be accepted on a first come first served basis. The deadline for applications is Sunday Nov 14th. I will send out a Zoom link a few days before the meeting. We will break for lunch about 13.00 and Sheila will speak to us at 14.00.
