Dear AV enthusiast, A lot has gone on since the last issue of AV News e-xtra. You may have been expecting an announcement on the Royal Photographic Society International Audio-Visual Festival, so now it's time to make that announcement. The AV Group Committee has decided that this year it will be an online Festival. If you would like to see the full consideration given to this decision, please click on www.rps.org/av and read the latest Festival News. The closing date for receipt of entries is Friday the 27th of August 2021 although entries will be received from Sunday the 1st of August 2021. The Festival will be held over the weekend of Friday the 24th, Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th of September 2021. A revised “Information for Entrants” will be released shortly. The FIAP and RPS Medals are with me and waiting for worthy winners.
Anyway, what has been going on? Committee meetings, watching the Covid briefings, consideration of live versus online events, and on the top of the list the Jurassic Coast International AV Festival organised by the Exmouth Photo Group and led by the RPS Audio Visual Group Vice Chair, Ian Bateman. This was a slickly run event, as you would expect, which received 116 entries. Details of the results etc. can be found in this issue of AV News e-xtra. Next year, Ian assures me that the event will not clash with the next Garda Festival, which will be good,as we do hope to be able to attend the Festival in 2022. During the Zoom conferencing Linda and I had a conversation with

photographer Francesca Gernetti, who spoke very good English. In partnership with Carla Fiorina she was co-author of the AV‘APT22’, which was an excellent production, winning the FIAF Gold Medal at the Garda 2021 International AV Festival. It was great that she was also able to join the Jurassic Coast event and see what we do here in the UK. At the break she commented on the different styles of AV - Italian and UK - and noted that the Italians were encouraged to be innovative and tell stories more creatively than the polished documentaries of those of the UK entrants. Food for thought I think. I understand there have been some applications for Royal Photographic Society Distinctions in Film, Digital and Multimedia. Those who are successful will receive a specially designed citation, skilfully produced by Andrew Gagg, as their distinction will have been obtained in this 50th anniversary of the first Distinction in AV being awarded. The closing date for applications is the 30th of July so there is still time to apply if you are interested. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the rest of this edition of AV News e-xtra and see what's been going on and what is coming up.

Competition Results - East Anglian AV Competition East Anglian Audio Visual Competition 2020/21 Dick has invited me to a few AV events lately and asked if I would give my thoughts on The 2020/21 East Anglia AV Competition. I was super impressed from the ‘Get Go’, and thoroughly enjoyed the day. I’ve certainly got a lot to learn from such high standards; set by every entry. There was such a great variety of topics with different imaginative approaches. Derrick Holliday’s winning entry ‘Reconciliation’, was excellent and I now want to visit Coventry Cathedral to re live the story told. A whole day of AV’s is bound to stimulate ideas for our own photo opportunity ‘bucket lists’. Philip Smithies Certificates of Merits in London (A Tale of Two Palaces) and ‘Portrait of Vienna’, certainly helped me with that. How did you keep all those tourists out of shot? On that theme, I’ve been to Guilin but never got close to the photo’s in Robert Howarth’s images of ‘The Cormorant Fishermen’. Such a well deserved ‘Best Photography’ award. I could pick out so many excellent points of merit from all of the AV’s, but would just like to say how absolutely perfect the ‘Voice Over ‘ - (David Haig) was in Ray Bridges ‘My Boy Jack’. So empathetic to this very moving AV. The Essex AV Group have had 28 East Anglian competitions to date, it’s not surprising there was such warm camaraderie amongst the audience. Clearly missing, the traditional meet up, this competition was a year in delay whilst the world refined the virtual equivalent. It was however, ironically refreshing to not see any AV’s on the theme of our enforced isolation. Dick and Ian ran the day faultlessly and I was grateful of the newly learnt technology of Zoom to be part of the day. I think you could have boiled an egg to perfection with Dick’s time keeping. The judges for the day; Ian Bateman and Clive Tanner were rightly recognised for a job well done. Their commentary ably supported their choices and demonstrated both their technical and creative expertise. I know everyone is looking forward to returning to those cherished freedoms of meeting together, but with around 70 people on Zoom for this competition, I would say the day was still very successful. Sheila Haycox ARPS, MPAGB/AV, EFIAP Sheila has been awarded the Champion Audio-Visual in the Tauranga AV Salon with her AV ‘The Quest’. Sheila was also the winner in the Music, Poetry and Song section with her AV ‘Behind the Mask’ and the winner of the Documentary section with ‘The Quest’.
