Our Purpose and Values

Royal High School Bath is a place where ambition meets innovation, and where our students are empowered to become future-ready global citizens.

We are a school where every girl matters, every voice is heard, and everyone is inspired to explore and to try anything.

As part of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), our vision is to create a more equitable world for all by equipping girls to be the leaders and changemakers of the future.

Our values underpin everything we do and are reflected within our curriculum.

Girls First

Every girl matters to us. We celebrate individuality and nurture confident, inspiring leaders ready to shape the world around them.

Kindness

We foster inclusivity, respect and empathy, encouraging every girl to raise each other up – building friendships that last a lifetime.

Bravery

Our girls face the unknown with confidence and curiosity. They challenge convention, embrace growth, and thrive as resilient, lifelong learners.

Excellence

Our girls are creative critical thinkers – striving for excellence in everything they aspire to achieve.

The Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST)

As a proud member of the GDST — a powerhouse of 26 schools and a global network of inspiring alumnae — we are part of a community that is redefining what it means to educate girls for the future.

Welcome

It gives me great pleasure to welcome your family to Royal High School Bath, GDST. Whether you are joining us at the start of a new school year, or midway through the year – we try hard to ensure you have the warmest of welcomes and settle in quickly.

This booklet contains lots of information you need to help your daughter make a smooth transition into our Royal High community. I know that moving to Senior School, or joining a new school, is a big step, but we will do everything we can to make the transition as seamless as possible.

There are lots of events held throughout the year for parents, guardians and carers to attend, as well as online meetings and updates with boarders’ families. We want you to get involved and feel part of our friendly community. You will receive a weekly bulletin with a link to the school calendar, so do look out for these over the coming months.

At Royal High, we pride ourselves on our pastoral care, and the key to our success is having regular communication between the school, parents and students. Please do get in touch with either me, your daughter’s Head of Year or Form Tutor if you have any concerns or questions throughout the year; we are always happy to help.

I am looking forward to meeting you all during what I am sure will be a busy, exciting and rewarding year.

With best wishes

Communication

It is essential that we have your up-to-date contact details. Please let the main school office know if these change at any time. This includes your address, email address and telephone numbers.

Once your daughter is admitted onto the database at the start of term, new parents will be issued with account login details to our Parent Portal, current parents will keep existing login details. For new students this can take up to 3 days. Login via the link at the top right-hand corner of the school website home page.

If you are unaware of your account details, or need a password reset, please e-mail servicedesk@rhsb.gdst.net

You may also like to keep up-to-date with school news through the news pages on our website or social media channels.

SchoolPost

All letters e-mailed home are sent via SchoolPost which is delivered in a weekly drop each Friday. Copies of SchoolPost messages can also be found on the Parent Portal, where you will also find the school calendar, details of sports fixtures, music lessons, reports and timetables.

ClassList

Parent-to-parent communication is encouraged via ClassList - new parents have access from July when new students are ‘added’ onto the system.

A weekly Bulletin will keep you abreast of notices and upcoming events. Urgent messages may be sent at other times.

Boarding

Within boarding we aim to ensure that all boarders enjoy a living environment which is supportive, caring and safe, and which supports their physical, intellectual, spiritual and moral development. This includes:

• Learning about human nature

• Understanding people with whom they live and work

• Respecting differences, learning compromises and tolerance

• Looking out for one another and caring for each other.

We understand that ‘joined up’ pastoral care underpins personal development. We ensure that there is a strong School-Home link so that boarding parents are kept in touch. We also ensure that boarders enjoy equitable rights of access to all school activities with day girls, and that the School’s ethos and values are upheld within the boarding environment.

New boarders are supported to make friends quickly, and are encouraged to invite their day girl friends for a sleepover in boarding.

Weekly & Flexi Boarding

Our boarding is flexible and designed to suit the needs of every girl and family. We offer full, weekly and flexi boarding options.

Weekly boarding provides the perfect opportunity for busy families to experience the best of school and home, with girls spending weeknights in school and the weekends at home.

Flexi boarding can be arranged to suit your family’s needs, up to a maximum of three nights per week.

If you would like to book an occasional boarding night, please email or telephone the Director of Boarding on shstaff@rhsb. gdst.net to check availability, giving as much notice as possible.

Please note that spaces in some year groups are limited, but we will always try to accommodate girls.

All our new girls will recieve a Golden Ticket for one free night in boarding.

Before and After School Provision

Before school

The school day begins at 08:30. Day students may be in school from 08:00 when they should either be in Southside, the library/common room or their tutor room. Staff will be available in school but students will not be directly supervised until 08:25.

If your daughter requires breakfast on her arrival, she may go to the dining room. The charge for breakfast will depend on her choice and will be charged to a prepaid catering card which can be topped up through ParentPay. The latest serving is at 08:15.

If you are bringing your daughter to school by car, please drop her at either the Music School entrance on Charlcombe Lane or the back of the school on Richmond Road. Parents or guardians dropping students should not drive into the Lansdown entrance between 08:00 and 09:30.

After school

If your daughter travels home by bus, she needs to leave school promptly so that she does not miss it. If she does miss her bus, she must return to the school office and ask for assistance from reception which is staffed until 17:00.

If your daughter is collected at 15:50, please ensure that she knows exactly where she is to be met. The Music School Charlcombe Lane entrance or Richmond Road entrance are best. Parents or guardians collecting students after school between 16:00-17:00 should not drive onto the school site using the Lansdown Road entrance.

No students should be waiting alone for more than a few minutes in unattended areas of the school or outside the school gates, particularly during the darker winter months. They should wait either in reception, or Supervised Study if waiting for an extended period of time.

Day students may stay at school until 18:00 to take part in an activity or to do homework, however, they must always be either in Supervised Study or in a staffsupervised club approved by the school. If students wish to attend Supervised Study, parents should book this a week in advance by using the booking form (on the Parent Portal).

In case of a fire or other emergency, it is essential that students remaining at school after 16:00 are in the care of a member of staff until they leave the premises.

After 18:00

Students are welcome to join the boarders and have supper at school if, for example, they are taking part in a school play or concert, and are in the care of the member of staff in charge.

Individual casual supper charge for day girls is £4.60 daily and should be purchased through the students’ pre-paid catering cards. These can be topped up through ParentPay.

Day Boarding

After school, a student can become an honorary member of the boarding house and follow the boarding routine until 21:00

at the latest, by which time they must be collected from school.

This means that they stay at school for supper (at 18:00) and do homework and/ or activities with boarders afterwards. They can be collected at any point after supper by prior agreement with the staff concerned.

Supper is included in the cost of this option, as is the ‘in house snack’ at 16:00. For planning reasons, day boarding needs to be booked and paid for in advance. Please contact the school office for details.

Absence from School

Parents should not make requests to take a student out of school during term time for any other reason than emergencies. A letter requesting leave of absence must be sent to the Head, Ms Heidi-Jayne Boyes, at least a week before the absence.

Parental requests should be submitted to tutors for absence for medical appointments during the course of the school day. The request must be made in writing or by email. We cannot except notification by telephone for legal reasons. Students must sign in and out at reception.

For an absence due to illness, parents should notify the school office by telephone or email to royalhigh@rhsb. gdst.net before 08:30 on the first and each subsequent day of that absence. If a prolonged absence is anticipated, the tutor and Head of Year should be contacted and parents should send a note or email for the tutor when the student returns to school. The tutor or Head of Year may contact parents if absence notes are not

forthcoming, or if a pattern of absence is emerging.

If nothing has been heard by 08:30 on the first day of absence or there is concern about a student’s absence, the office will phone home.

Lunch

Lunch for all day students in Years 7 to 11 is compulsory. All boarders’ meals are included in the fees.

The cost of these lunches will be charged by the GDST and will appear on the school fees invoice. Lunch entitles students to the following:

A freshly cooked hot meal - meat or vegetarian option, including pasta or jacket potato with various toppings plus a choice of a hot pudding, cake, yogurt or fresh fruit. Soup is also available.

Chilled water is available in the dining room.

Please note that catering costs due to student absence, for whatever reason, cannot be reimbursed. When students are required to have a packed lunch for an offsite trip, these are arranged by the school.

Education for Life (RSHE) and Citizenship

Relationships, Sex and Health Education and Citizenship aim for all young people to become successful individuals who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve. Our aim is to foster confident young women who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives, and to be responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.

We employ a wide range of expert speakers to enrich our course. Year 7-11 students will have a dedicated PSHEE lesson for one hour per fortnight.

• Year 7 topics include: identity and friendships, staying safe, community identity and basic finance.

• Year 8 topics include: relationships, risky behaviours (including alcohol, drugs and smoking) and human rights and laws.

• Year 9 topics include: choices and sex and relationship education from the school nurse, government and parliament and economic wellbeing.

• Year 10 topics include: global citizenship and thinking, managing risk (includes a session from the school nurse), the UN and emotional wellbeing.

• Year 11 topics include: careers, work experience and CVs, further education and finance.

In addition, all years receive input on relationships and sexual education, emotional wellbeing and positive mental health.

Houses

Each girl is allocated to a House as she joins the school. The Houses are led by staff Heads of Houses and Sixth Form House Leaders, and there are House assemblies throughout the year.

Being part of a House encourages our students to work together with other year groups, promoting teamwork and a healthy, competitive spirit.

The Houses, led by their House Leaders, take part in a wide range of events including a House dance and drama performance, sports competitions and House quizzes. Everyone is involved and the winning Houses gain valuable House points.

Another way of getting House points is by being rewarded with Merits and Commendations. At the end of the school year the House with the most points is awarded the highly-prized House Shield.

Co-Curricular Programme

One of the strengths of Royal High is that we recognise student life is about much more than just academic success and we encourage our students to balance their academic work by taking part in our wide range of exciting enrichment, extension and co-curricular activities.

Students are expected to sign up to a certain number of co-curricular activities that are run during the school day and after school.

Our extensive programme offers a diverse range of activities which allows our students to develop their skills, try different things and be creative to find new ways of expressing themselves. Our RHB ACTIVE programme encourages them to be courageous and stretch themselves by taking risks in a safe and friendly environment. It also enables students to communicate and develop friendships outside of academic lessons and develop commitment, compassion, perseverance and organisational skills.

If you have any questions, please contact Miss Imogen Cornick, Co-Curricular Coordinator: i.cornick@rhsb.gdst.net

Music

Music plays a major role in our school. Our Steinway Music School provides students with exceptional musical opportunities, including concerts each term.

A wealth of information about the music curriculum, music scholarships, individual instrumental lessons, clubs, ensembles and performances can be found on our Parent Portal.

If you have any questions, please contact Mr Mark Bradbury, Director of Music: m.bradbury@rhsb.gdst.net

Drama

Drama makes a unique contribution to the life of our school. Beyond the excellent classroom provision, the girls are given numerous opportunities to become involved in a range of drama activities including LAMDA lessons, workshops, performances, annual school productions and regular theatre trips.

With the support of highly experienced teachers and technical staff, girls are encouraged to explore new possibilities as creators, designers, technicians, directors and performers.

If you have any questions, or you would like to arrange peripatetic lessons in Speech and Drama, please contact Ms Leanne VincentNorgate, Head of Drama: l.vincent-norgate@rhsb.gdst.net

Sport and PE

Sport and PE are key aspects of life at Royal High. Our wide curriculum, which offers students of all ages the chance to try a great range of different physical activities and competitive opportunities, enables girls to train at a higher level and represent our school. All students must take note of the following:

Changing Rooms and Kit

• Students should bring the appropriate kit for lessons (old style royal blue hoodies are non-regulation and should not be worn).

• Students should take pride in their appearance for all lessons.

• Kit bags should be left in lockers or in the specifically designed cubby-holes in locker rooms. In lessons, hair should be tied back and all jewellery, including fitbits and smart watches, should be removed.

• Any student who is unable to take part in PE for any reason should bring a note from her parent or boarding staff. She will still be involved in the lesson (even if she cannot take part in the physical activity) and will be required to change into kit for the lesson.

Sports Fixtures

It is both a privilege and an honour to represent Royal High in a sports team.

It is expected that all students uphold this commitment, representing the School with pride and showing good sportsmanship at all times.

Students are expected to attend all fixtures in their correct kit, travelling in their School tracksuit at all times.

Please note that unavoidable circumstances sometimes lead to the re-scheduling of some fixtures. Please always check the weekly timetable on the Parent Portal to ensure you have the most up to date fixture information.

If you have any questions please contact Miss Heidi Baber, Director of Sport: h.baber@rhsb.gdst.net

The Medical Centre

The Medical Centre is run by our team of three school nurses, who are supported by the school doctor, a local female GP. It consists of a treatment room, quiet area, kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms.

If you wish to speak to the nurse on duty regarding a student, you can contact them by telephone on 01225 731007, via the School Office, by letter, or in person, by appointment. Out of hours the parents of boarders can also contact the medical staff via the housemistress.

The nurse is available during Surgery Hours:

• 08:15-08:45 for boarders

• 13:00-13:30 for boarders and day students

• 16:00-16:30 for boarders

• For emergencies at other times

No student may go to the Medical Centre unless they have been to the School Office first. No student may leave a lesson except for an emergency.

Boarders

Boarders are registered with the school doctor for the duration of their time at the school. If a boarder needs treatment during the school holidays she will be able to visit her local doctor, but will have to register as a ‘temporary resident’.

All boarders receive a medical examination on entry to the school. This is carried out by the school nurses and the doctor.

If your daughter needs to be seen by a doctor whilst at school, she will normally have an appointment with the school doctor in the Medical Centre during her

weekly visit to school. However, if she needs to be seen urgently, she will be escorted to the doctor’s surgery in the centre of Bath by one of the boarding assistants.

We try to keep specialist appointments during term to a minimum to prevent disruption to schooling. However, there may be occasions when it will be necessary for your daughter to attend an appointment during the school day.

If you live locally, you may wish to escort your daughter yourself, otherwise she will be taken by a boarding assistant (until she is 16 years of age, when she is considered old enough to organise travel arrangements herself).

All medicines must be handed to the Medical Centre or the Housemistress for safe keeping. Under no circumstances must students keep medicines in their rooms.

If your daughter is too unwell to attend school, she will be admitted to the Medical Centre. If this happens, the staff will always contact you as soon as possible, and keep in regular contact with you during her time in the Medical Centre.

Day Students

If your daughter becomes unwell during the day, the school nurses are available to provide first aid and basic care for her and you will be contacted. If you have any anxieties about your daughter’s health that may affect her while she is at school, the medical staff would be happy to discuss them with you and provide the necessary care and support.

If your daughter has a chronic health problem, suffers from a prolonged illness or has to be admitted to hospital, it is essential to let the medical staff know, so that appropriate support can be offered on her return to school.

If your daughter needs to take medication during the school day, she must bring it to the Medical Centre for safe keeping in its original packaging with her name and doctor’s instructions. Please fill out the parental permission form found on the Parent Portal.

No medication should be carried in school by girls, except for inhalers and EpiPens. If your daughter suffers from asthma and uses an inhaler or an EpiPen, please ensure a spare is provided to be kept in the Medical Centre.

We offer all new girls a school health check which is carried out by the school nurses. The health check comprises a short examination of height and weight, an eye test and the opportunity for a student to express any health worries she may have. Your written consent is sought on the medical records which you are requested to fill in before your daughter’s arrival at school.

Routine immunisations are now undertaken by your GP, apart from some immunisations which take place in school for some year groups as part of Government initiatives. The school nurses will inform parents when they are due to take place, and gain consent. Please ensure the school nurses are informed of dates of boosters outside school to be able to keep the student’s school records up to date.

Your daughter must not phone home to ask to be collected if she is unwell. She will be assessed at the Medical Centre and the nurse on duty will phone home if necessary. Please do not collect your daughter under these circumstances without first checking with the Medical Centre or School Office.

No Nuts

We are an allergy aware school and as such nuts are forbidden. Please DO NOT bring nuts into school - we have students with severe allergies.

Traces of nuts can be found in cereal bars, chocolates and some chocolate products, even the dust particles from products containing nuts may trigger a reaction which could lead to a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction.

Guest Students

Royal High is happy to welcome exchange partners of students (in addition to those links formally made by the school). Guest students are invited to join us for a maximum of three school days. Please contact the Pastoral Deputy Head to make such an arrangement. The school requires at least two weeks’ notice. Exchange partners (girls only) of boarders are welcome to reside at school for a maximum of three nights.

Expectations of Behaviour

Students are expected to show respect for the feelings and personal property of others, act with consideration for their environment and uphold the highest standards of dress and behaviour at all times.

ICT & E-Safety

Mobile Devices: Code of Conduct

From September 2025, all students in Years 7 to 11 must store their mobile phones in school-provided, branded Phone Locker signal-blocking pouches. These highquality, NASA-tested pouches cost £15, which will be added to the September fees invoice. Students will lock their phones during morning registration and unlock them at 15:50 using magnetic release points at school exits. With proper care, the pouch should last throughout their time at the school.

This code is in addition to the GDST Acceptable Use agreement which governs student online safety and behaviour. We have ‘acceptable use’ guidelines to ensure safe, sensible and responsible usage to protect everyone in school.

Students must:

• Only use ICT (on our systems or on their own devices) in school for school purposes. This includes the use of the internet, email, digital video, mobile technologies, etc.

• Login only as themselves

• Use their school email addresses on school devices

• Respect the privacy and copyright of others’ material

• Not download or install software on school ICT equipment without permission

• Not post or try to access or download offensive, illegal or aggressive material

• Not try to bypass the internet filtering system.

Laptops

Students must take note of the following guidelines regarding laptops. In Years 7 to 11 students are required to bring their own laptop to school.

The key requirements for this device are:

• Be able to connect to the school wireless network and the internet

• Have a “standby to operational” time of less than 30 seconds

• Have a keyboard (possibly Bluetooth if using a tablet)

• Have a battery lifetime > 6 hours

• Be able to record photos, video and audio

• Have installed apps for word processing and other office apps to allow offline working (these can be downloaded for free with the school’s Microsoft licence)

• Have a protective case

Although not essential, there are benefits to touch screen devices and we would advise that a screen size of between 10-14 inches is the most suitable.

The following advice applies to all forms of mobile device i.e. laptops, tablets, mobile phones and wearable technology such as smartwatches.

• We highly recommend that parents insure any student devices against loss, theft or breakages as the school insurance will not cover devices

• They should be locked away when not required and never left in an unattended bag.

• A passcode or password is enabled to prevent other students misusing the device.

• Location services are enabled so that if it is lost, it may be tracked or disabled.

• Mobile devices must never be taken into an examination room. Candidates found with unauthorised technology during exams risk facing serious sanctions from the examination board.

• Any pupil found accessing websites with inappropriate content will be dealt with according to the Behaviour Policy.

School Uniform

Having a sense of belonging to our school is important, and wearing your uniform is a symbol of pride in our school. Please take note of the following rules regarding uniform:

• School uniform should be named, clean, correct and in good order at all times.

• All students in Years 7 to 11 must wear their school jacket travelling to and from school and while in school, unless advised by a member of staff.

• Shoes should be black leather look (no trainers or shoes that look like trainers).

• Tights, ankle or knee length socks (not trainer socks) should be plain navy.

• One pair of simple, stud earrings is allowed. No rings, bracelets or body piercings are allowed. Fine chains with a religious symbol may be worn around the neck (but inside the blouse).

• Visible make-up and nail varnish should not be worn.

• Hair should not be obviously dyed and should be a single, natural colour and long hair should be tied back with a plain black or navy hair tie.

• If students wish to wear a coat over their uniform, it must be the waterproof crested navy Sports coat, available to buy through SchoolBlazer, or a plain, unbranded navy coat.

• When wearing school PE kit to and from school, within the school grounds or to fixtures, students must wear school tracksuit bottoms or the RHSB crested leggings.

• Sixth Form dress should conform to the agreed dress code.

All our school uniform can be purchased from SchoolBlazer. Visit their website via this QR code.

Lost Property

Parents must ensure that all students’ clothing, shoes, trainers and valuables are clearly named.

Students should avoid bringing large amounts of money into school, but if it is absolutely necessary, this should be handed in to the School Office or to the Boarding staff for safe-keeping.

If anybody finds anything valuable, they must hand it into the School Office for safe-keeping and if a student has lost something, she should go there to find out if anything has been handed in. Other items should be returned to the owner or given to a member of staff.

Policies

We have a range of policies in place to provide guidance and assurance to students, parents and staff alike. Should you have any questions about our policies please contact: royalhigh@rhsb.gdst.net

• General (including the Complaints Procedure)

• Curriculum and Extra-curricular Activities (including Health and Safety on Educational Visits)

• Assessment (including Specific Learning Difficulties and External Examinations)

• Pastoral Care (including Safeguarding Young People)

• Discipline (including Alcohol, Smoking and Illegal Substances).

Parents can apply to the School Office for a paper copy of any policy or view on our website via this QR code.

Fina ncial Matters

Royal High operates an internet payment system for parents called ParentPay. This is separate from the school fees which are administered directly from the GDST. All chargeable activities that your daughter takes part in must be paid for through our ParentPay portal. It is important that this happens in advance of the activity so that we are able to secure a place for your daughter and ensure that we have all the necessary staffing in place for her safety. Unfortunately, if payment is not made then your daughter will not be able to participate.

New parents will receive a letter from Admissions in August with their login details.

Access ParentPay via this QR code.

Guidelines for School Trips

When a student is invited to go on a trip, parents will receive an email with all the information required. You will be asked to fill in a form to give permission for the student to attend the trip. It is a requirement of the GDST that your response is received, and without this, your daughter will not be able to participate. If a cost is involved, you will also be asked to pay for the trip using ParentPay. Full payment is required before your daughter takes part.

Please keep to the reply deadline as the trip may not go ahead if a response has not been submitted by the given date. Even if the trip is viable, a student may not be able to attend if the reply has not been received on time.

Travel and Transport

Our comprehensive transport network provides girls with quick, trouble-free journeys to school. We have bus routes running across Bath and the wider area including Tetbury, East Bristol, Chew Valley, Midsomer Norton, Frome, Shaftesbury and Chippenham.

New routes can be considered if enough students express an interest.

Find out more at our dedicated web portal, via this QR code, where you can also make bookings and payments for the service.
