KAREN MALONEY HAS SPENT 37 YEARS CARING FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE

A big heart for the tiniest among us

efore the break of dawn this Christmas, Karen Maloney left her bed, crept out of her darkened house and drove to Royal Columbian Hospital. By the time families around the Lower Mainland started tearing into presents around their livingroom trees, the veteran nurse had CORNELIA NAYLOR stepped onto the floor of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for what could be her last Christmas shift. She retires next month after 37 years, and she’s lost count of how many Christmases she’s spent caring for some of the hospital’s most vulnerable patients – tiny babies born as many as 16 weeks premature and poised for a time between life and death. “They need a lot of help at the beginning,” she says. Despite that – or maybe because of it – Christmas in the NICU has always been a magical time for Maloney. It’s not an easy thing for her to explain, even to young nurses nervous about working their first holiday shift. “I’ve more or less said, ‘It’s just a very special time and you’ll understand when you get here.’” Not that all neonatal nurses will get a chance to escort a baby through a snowstorm on Christmas Eve like Maloney did early in her career at Prince George Regional. As part of the hospital’s transport team, she had been assigned to help return a baby via ambulance to its parents in Smithers almost 400 kilometers away. “We were sailing along, and I felt like we were on a sleigh,” Maloney says. “It was a magic night. We got to Smithers Hospital, the parents were there and I said ‘This is your gift from the Prince George Regional Hospital.’ I handed them this baby, and I just sat down and started crying. It was beautiful.” On the other end of the spectrum, Maloney remembers a particularly tough Christmas Day at RCH about 10 years ago. The unit was filled to capacity but the babies kept coming. “They were all quite ill, and we were just running around like crazy just trying to make sure that everyone had the best care possible,” Maloney says. A Christmas potluck remained untouched and Maloney ended her shift completely spent. “When I got home, I was totally exhausted, so I had nothing left for my

husband and daughter,” she says. “I learned a lot from that.” Now she tells the younger nurses to plan their own holiday celebrations another day if they’re scheduled to work the Christmas shift. hether the day is magic or mayhem, Christmas at the NICU is all about family, according to Maloney, and that has taken the sting out of absenting herself from her own family all those years. “You’re leaving your home, but you’re going to your other home,” she says. Christmas or not, the NICU is basically an emergency room for babies, and Maloney’s team has to be ready for anything that comes through the doors, but the unit’s tiny patients often stay between six and nine months, so there are a lot of familiar faces when the holidays roll around. Those bonds are especially close for nurses, like Maloney, who sign up to care for individual infants for the duration of their stay. “Every time we come to work, we’re assigned to that baby and family,” she says. “They really get to know us and we get to know their baby and what their baby’s needs are.” It can be intimidating at first for new parents at Maloney’s unit to interact with their tiny, incubator-bound babies who sometimes seem like “more machine than

baby.” So Maloney and her fellow NICU nurses show parents how to lay firm, comforting hands on their newborns through the incubator portholes. They encourage them to change diapers and spend time holding their babies skin-to-skin whenever possible. Along with new technologies in the NICU, such family-centred care has evolved dramatically during

Glacier Media purchases newspapers in New Westminster and Burnaby There will be no closures of papers, says Glacier boss Staff at newspapers purchased by Glacier Media last week have no reason to worry about closures, according to the company’s president of Lower Mainland publishing and community digital media. On Dec. 17, Glacier Media, which owns the The

Record, announced it had purchased four newspapers from competitor Black Press, including the Tri-City News, Burnaby News Leader, New Westminster News Leader and the Richmond Review, along with their related publications and digital properties. Glacier Media will take control of these newspapers starting on March 2, and until then it’s business as usual, according to Alvin Brouwer, Glacier’s presi-

dent of Lower Mainland publishing and community digital media. “We’re keeping all of our titles going, period,” Brouwer said. In addition to the new purchases, Glacier also sold three of its own newspapers, the Surrey NOW, Langley Advance and Maple Ridge Times. Glacier also sold the Vancouver Island Newspaper Group to Black

Press. Those papers are: Cowichan Valley Citizen, Comox Valley Echo, The Oceanside Star, the Alberni Valley Times, the Nanaimo Daily News and Nanaimo Press and the Campbell River Courier. The Victoria Times Colonist was not part of the transaction. The proceeds from the sale will go to paying down debt at Glacier Media. – Cayley Dobie

especially evident at Christmas. Staff breaks out special Christmas linen for the incubators, and the babies are outfitted with festive toques and get tiny stuffies as gifts. Parents are greeted with a Christmas photo of their newborn – taken by Maloney. She began the tradition about 10 years ago, taking pictures of each baby in the unit and presenting them to parents in a special card. Sometimes those parents are miles

away in Vernon or Fort Nelson and can’t make it to New West for the holiday. “They’re relying on us to make a nice Christmas for their little one,” Maloney says, “and they feel good about it because they’ve gotten to know us.” Sometimes her reward comes years later in the form of a Christmas card with a photo of one of the unit’s “graduates” – a man or woman Maloney might once have held in her hands when he or she weighed

just one pound and was struggling to stay alive. “They’ve been dancing or have graduated from university,” Maloney says, describing photos that have arrived over the years. It’s rewarding work, she says, and not something she’s ready to leave behind completely. Come February, she’ll be back at the unit part time. “I do love my work,” she said. “Not everyone can say that.”

It was pouring rain and dark and Julie Meskine was lost. She was trying to make her way onto the Queensborough Bridge but the Surrey resident got turned around in New West. Suddenly her car stalled. She tried to restart it once, twice, three times and finally the engine sprang to life. Meskine paused for a moment and when she looked up, out her rain-streaked win-

dow, she realized where she was. She was at Eighth Avenue and 23rd Street – the site of her son’s roadside memorial. “I imagine he was missing me,” Meskine said. Meskine and a dozen friends and family were huddled around a telephone pole at the end of Eighth Avenue on Saturday night to remember her son Karim. Christmas lessons from a toddler

’m learning about Christmas this year from an expert. She’s tiny and blonde and has big blue eyes that are always wide open, taking in the magic of the world around her – and a cute little mouth that can’t stop flapping with the excitement of sharing that world in words. She’s not quite two-and-a-half years old, but she’s got this Christmas thing nailed. When it comes to Christmas spirit, my daughter has a whole bunch of lessons for JULIE MACLELLAN those of us who are older and supposedly wiser than her. She’s not racing frantically around trying to make Christmas magical. Because, you see, she’s already figured out the simple truth: Christmas just is magical, and all we have to do is let it happen. She couldn’t care less whether the house is clean, whether the baking is done, whether there are just-right presents wrapped just-so under the justdelightful tree. (Which is good, because if you know anything about me you’ll know that she sure as heck didn’t get Martha Stewart for a mother.) She’s not worrying about buying the perfect outfit to wear to the umpteenth holiday party or throwing the perfect shindig to impress co-workers and friends. She’s not bothered what anyone else thinks of her state of readiness for the holidays – or lack thereof. She’s just taking in the world with wide-eyed wonder. “Look, Mommy, Christmas!” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that refrain over the past few weeks. Sometimes it’s in response to something big, like the giant Christmas tree at Herbert Spencer School. More often, though, it’s in response to something relatively small. The snowmen decorations sitting on the shelf at the coffee shop. The dancing Santa by the door at daycare. The string of coloured lights on the neighbours’ eaves that she can see from her bedroom window. The “Jolly J’s” (that’s candy canes, for those uninitiated in Charlottespeak) that adorn a house up the street. The fir trees standing in a row at Home Depot. Even, on one occasion, a small piece of discarded wrapping paper on the sidewalk. And don’t forget the music. She’s picked up on a couple of Christmas carols – ask her to sing Jingle Bells or Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and she’ll give it a good shot. She’s not much concerned whether she’s in tune, whether she has the words right or whether you’re enjoy-

She’s just belting it out because, well, it’s the thing to do, and she likes it, and singing is how you express joy. That, and dancing – put on a tune, and she’ll spin her little heart out in response. Each tiny moment in her world is greeted with the kind of enthusiasm most of us reserve for the so-called “big” things in life. She has no idea what she’s “supposed” to do for the holidays – she’s just experiencing everything around her with the same zest she brings to life yearround. She expects nothing. And, as a consequence, she enjoys everything. Sure, we’ve given her some Christmas experiences. We’ve gone for a little night lights display tour (which is to say, we walked a few of our favourite blocks in our neighbourhood, where many of the homeowners decorate for the holidays). We went to New West’s Santa Claus Parade and checked out the fun at River

Market and the Anvil Centre. And, most memorably of all for my wide-eyed child, we rode the Christmas train at Stanley Park and took in the Bright Nights experience. Every single one of those things has been worth it for the wonder in her eyes and the joy in her babble afterwards as she recounts her experiences to Mommy and Daddy. But you know what she talks about most? Not seeing the parade so much as the fact that she went downtown with her little BFF. And the Christmas train? Yeah, that was great. But what was more fun was going to see her “auntie” and “uncle” afterwards and play with her biggirl friend. It hasn’t occurred to her to think about “stuff.” She’s received a couple of Christmas presents so far, and she’s happily latched on to one of them – a little stuffed reindeer. She loves it with the same dogged

devotion she gives to a rather eclectic assortment of treasured possessions, including a little pink plastic ring that once adorned a birthday cupcake, and the Little People family known in our house as “Plastic Mommy,” “Plastic Daddy” and “Plastic Charlotte.” But she doesn’t have any clue that Christmas is meant to involve filling your house with fancy presents wrapped in fancy paper. She’s not going to get a lot from her parents for Christmas (although, undoubtedly, her rather doting grandparents will make up for it). But she won’t feel the lack of anything. She has no inkling of the desire for bigger. Better. Brighter. Shinier. More. She just loves her toys and her home and her room and her family and her friends – and her life – with a fierceness that all of us should strive to emulate.

THE RECORD STORY: Improved pedestrian access needed along Brunette – Dec. 17

Facebook I Dave Lundy: My heart goes out to the family, friends and co workers of the woman killed last night trying to cross Brunette Avenue. … But here’s a simple fact about that particular stretch of road and that area. From E. Columbia to Braid Street.. there are exactly 2 pedestrian crossings on Brunette. The 2 pedestrian crossings are at each end of the stretch of Brunette that runs from East Columbia to Braid St. Approximately 1 kilometer apart. For those who don’t know the area, on the south side of Brunette from Braid St to E. Columbia is all industrial park and businesses. Warehouses, manufacturing, trucking companies etc. On the south side of Brunette there is no pedestrian amenities from E. Columbia to just before the Burlington Northern Rail offices. And its a heavily used road connecting Hwy 1 to New West, Burnaby, East Richmond etc. There’s been numerous pedestrians struck along this road, people either going to or coming from work on the southside of Brunette, trying to gauge heavy traffic. The only pedestrian crossing to the southside of Brunette between E. Columbia and Braid is the SkyTrain pedestrian overpass. That only accesses the station. One of 2 things needs to happen to prevent this from happening again. 1. Improve pedestrians ability to access the business park and safely cross Brunette by building a pedestrian sidewalk at East Columbia down Brunette that accesses the business park, on the southside. Currently after you come onto Brunette from Columbia Street, there’s a vehicle pullout then bushes and thorns before the drop down for cars to access Braid Street Industrial Park. As well, consult with TransLink about jointly improving the footbridge at the SkyTrain station to allow pedestrians to access it when wanting to cross Brunette. Why this wasn’t ever done when the station was initially built is completely mind boggling. 2. Build a pedestrian barrier similiar to the one along King George Blvd in the stretch from King George Station to 102 I believe. Sometimes you do have to protect people from themselves. In the past, whenever there has been a fatality involving a truck, people use that to really whip it up about how bad trucks are, bladdy blah. I’m hoping that rather than blame the driver (who may have not known what happened, and will have to live with this for the rest of their lives), that people take the time to realize that this is an inherently dangerous situation for pedestrians and needs to be fixed. A New Westminster woman suffered minor injuries after she was hit by a car Thursday evening. The 48-year-old woman was crossing the street in the 500 block of Eighth Avenue around 4:40 p.m. when an oncoming vehicle struck her, Sgt. Chad Johnston, spokesperson for the New Westminster police, told The Record.

At the time of the crash, the woman wasn’t in a marked crosswalk. The woman, who is in a wheelchair, was taken to hospital and treated for a few scrapes to her face and soreness throughout her body. Otherwise she was relatively unscathed in the crash, Johnston added. Witnesses allege the driver of the vehicle involved – possibly in a grey Toyota-style vehicle – fled the scene before emergency personnel arrived, Johnston said.

“(Const. Brittany Ribeiro) is still interviewing a few witnesses at this point so it’s still an ongoing investigation. Obviously, with the hit and run, we’re going to be trying to seek more witnesses and track down more detail with regards to a potential plate and that sort of thing,” Johnston said. Three days earlier he was beaten by a 16-year-old New West teen (whose name will not be released) near the 22nd SkyTrain Station.“ The teen was arrested and charged with second-degree murder shortly after the incident. Since then, Karim’s mother, friends and family have been following the case through the courts to see that justice is served, Meskine said. “It’s for our family, first of all, to remember,” she said of the large, waterproof photo that was posted to the telephone pole during the vigil Saturday night. “I like, in a way, to leave it there so that neighbours that didn’t actually step out to do something, can remember he could have been saved if someone actually did. That could be your loved one, that

could be yourself.” Meskine said she hopes the trial will draw attention to her son and what happened to him, rather than the teen charged with his murder. It’s about a need for public safety, she added. “If we don’t help each other then where is the world going?” She said. “That’s my main thing.” The teen accused of killing Karim was in court on Dec. 4 to set a date for his trial but the scheduling was postponed. He will be back in court on Jan. 15 to fix the date. Because the accused is a young offender, Meskine is worried he won’t receive the maximum sentence, which she believes he deserves. “I hope the public opinion will put pressure and help with that matter. If you’re somebody responsible for that kind of crime you should have the maximum, and that’s what I hope the

public will step up and put pressure,” she said. Friends and family gathered at the vigil echoed Meskine’s concerns and pledged that they too will see the trial through to the end. Karim was attacked on his way to the 22nd Street SkyTrain Station on Dec. 17, 2013. He was found badly injured by a passerby who called 911. A suspect was arrested almost right away, and charged with second-degree murder when Karim was taken off of life-support. At the time, investigators with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team did not release any information on motive. The accused remains in custody at this time. In the meantime, Meskine is keeping her son’s memory alive. Events like Saturday’s vigil are part of the journey, she said, before kissing Karim’s photo.

Eat, drink and be merry in the city

here do plugged-in locals like to eat, drink and be merry? In honour of the holiday season, reporter Niki Hope checked in with some folks from around New Westminster to find out about their favourite spots. Here’s what she found out:

JJ Lee

New Westminster award-winning author and CBC contributor JJ Lee shares some of his favourite local stops. Eat: Oh, gee, that’s Anny’s (Dairy Bar). I’m from Montreal; it’s the most authentic poutine I can find in Vancouver. She (owner Anny Faucher) makes me feel at home. NIKI HOPE She talks to me in French. If there is hockey, the TV is on. She makes a good steamy (hotdog). We despair when she closes down in the winter (usually the month of January). Drink: I’m not a drinker. But if I were to speak to coffee, then the gelato place (Tre Galli Gelato Caffe) at River Market is the most satisfying. Be Merry: Merry, for me during Christmas, means family and community. The season can’t begin unless I do three things. There’s decorating the tree at home. Then I have to help the wonderful people of Queens Avenue Daycare Centre – where I spent seven years on its board of directors – decorate the stage for the annual Christmas concert. The set is the cutest. Fireplaces, sleighs, and snow people made out of stuffed paper bags and used cardboard. It’s all gossamer and tinsel that’s simply magic when the room lights go down and the spots go up. It’s performed by wee toddlers and preschoolers and is a hoot. Finally, I have to write a Christmas ghost story, like The Last Train, which I then turn into a chapbook. I sell those at the first December Winter Market at the River Market. I just love doing it. Then I really know, it’s time for a Merry Christmas. All of it puts me in the best mood, way more than shopping or wrapping presents. And I certainly don’t need anything under the tree, but I do need to do those three things.

Eat: We (with husband Brian) enjoy each Susan other’s company at Cartwright-Coates home with a homecooked meal, and when we eat it’s very important to us that we sit at the dinner table, the two of us,

that’s our time together. Drink: If we were going to have a cocktail, we would go to the River’s Reach. It’s a bit of our community watering hole. It’s the Cheers of New West – you always know somebody when you walk in. Be merry: That’s absolutely with my grandchildren. I have two and another one on the way. So every 18 months, she (daughter Chelsea) is having a baby (Cartwright-Coates laughs). Josh will be three in January, Jessa will be 18 months in January, and the new baby is due Feb. 1. I love grandmotherhood – until you are a grandma you don’t get it. People say it all of the time, but once you are, it’s all of the rewards for everything, because you’ve got the time (to enjoy them) … The anticipation of Christmas morning

(since we had grandchildren) is very high.

New report shows seniors’ coverage lacking

eniors are poorly served by incomebased pharmaceutical coverage, which leads to prescription-skipping and higher costs for hospitalization, according to a new report released Dec. 3 by the Institute for Research on Public Policy. “British Columbians report greater financial barriers to filling prescriptions than people do in other provinces,” said lead author Steve Morgan, director of the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research at the University of B.C. As the proportion of people over the age of 65 began to accelerate a decade ago, several provinces including B.C. ended age-based drug coverage that paid virtually all pharmaceutical costs for seniors. “Pharmaceutical policy

is particularly prone to age-related financial pressures – not so much on a system as a whole, but on governments,” Morgan said. As people retire from working life, responsibility for paying drug costs had historically passed from private insurers to the public purse. By adopting an income-based approach to pharmaceutical coverage for people of all ages in 2003, B.C. managed to halt fast-rising public drug costs at about $200 per person. That burden was transferred to employers and private insurers, which now pay upward of $400 per person, up from $200 before the policy switch, the authors say. In B.C., families that don’t have private insurance with a net income of at least $30,000 a year

pay their own drug costs up to three per cent of their income before the provincial Fair PharmaCare system begins to subsidize those costs. The deductible for families including one member born before 1939 is two per cent of income: at least $1,000 if they earn more than $50,000. “What that means is that, unlike people in other provinces, many more British Columbians are paying drug costs out of their pocket,” Morgan said. Faced with paying the full price of prescriptions until the minimum threshold of $1,000, seniors are less likely to fill prescriptions for common psychiatric, cardiac and asthma medications, according to research conducted in B.C., Morgan noted. Several Canadian studies have found British

Top guitarists set for Massey performance Fans of guitar music have a treat in store in January. International Guitar Night is returning to the Massey Theatre with its 2015 North American tour. One of the largest schools in the Lower Mainland won its firstever provincial track and field title. New Westminster Secondary’s aggregate and girls’ team banners at the 47th annual high school meet in Langley were a highlight of the year in the Royal City in 2014. The 10-athlete Hyack team unseated defending and 10-time champion Oak Bay by a single point to claim the school’s first B.C. high school banner in track and field since the competition went to a provincial model in 1967. New West was led by 15-year-old phenom Nina Schultz, who was named the provincial meet’s most outstanding female performer, and Grade 11 sprinter Raquel Tjernagel at the end-of-the-year track meet. The talented pair shared in six individual and relay team gold medals for New West. Schultz won the allevents heptathlon a week before the meet, as well as setting personal bests in

Douglas College upset PacWest regular season champion Columbia Bible College to earn a berth into the Canadian Colleges’ national men’s volleyball championships. The 2012 national collegiate runner-up defeated theAbbotsford school in four sets in its opening match and went on to claim the provincial gold medal at Capilano University in February. Douglas also knocked off Vancouver Island University in the quarter-finals before defeating league runner-up Camosun in the semifinals in straight sets. “The question (at the provincials) was where did that come from? But I’d argue … It was a matter of when we could accomplish it, not if,” said Douglas head coach Brad Hudson. Douglas wound up in sixth place at the nationals in March.

Multi-sport athlete Amanda Zacharuk was the first New West student to garner more than 250 points under the system. “I just like to have a full and busy life,” said Zacharuk. “I just wanted to be part of a team and to work for other people.”

On the all-hit list

Professional baseball player Justin Morneau moved into second place all-time in hitting among Canadian-born major league baseball players. The Colorado Rockies first baseman moved past pioneer ball player George Wood with his 1,468th hit in August. The 33-year-old Morneau is still more than 650 hits behind the all-time leader and former Rockies great Larry Walker. “Any time you’re second to him (Walker) in anything, it’s special,” said Morneau. “It’s pretty cool, but I’ve got a long way to go.”

Nuts about fishing

Aaron Laing of New Westminster captained Team Mustang to B.C.’s second-ever medal and first in nearly a decade at the Canadian national fly fishing championships in October. “We’re all absolutely nuts about fishing,” said Laing.

Program first for JVs

The New Westminster junior varsity football team earned a program first, winning a first-ever conference title in the B.C. secondary school league Valley division in November. The JV Hyacks also laid claim to their first unbeaten regular season. “It is nice. … I think we’re in that upper echelon of teams. We’re definitely a contender,” said JV coach Chad Oatway.

A disappointing end

The New Westminster Salmonbellies had a standout B.C. junior A lacrosse season stopped in Game 7 by the Coquitlam Adanacs in August.

The 20-1-0 regular season champions were bettered 12-8 in the final game of a best-of-seven B.C. final at Queen’s Park Arena. Consensus junior A player of the year Wesley Berg scored five times and set up the game winner for the Coquitlam Adanacs in the Minto Cup qualifying series. “He put the team on his back and great players can do that,” said New Westminster’s head coach Dan Perreault. “I’m not surprised he did that.”

Fulfilling a dream

New Westminster high school senior Harper Sherman made his football dream come true, verbally committing to the University of Arizona in the Pac-12 in August. The 6-4, 270-pound offensive lineman went on to earn recognition in the B.C. Secondary School league with all-star standing on both the conference and provincial teams. “I had this dream of being a Div. 1 football player,” said Sherman. “But I have to keep pushing forward and putting in the hard work.”

The Northwest Giants wrapped up their 2014 B.C. Major Midget hockey league schedule on a positive note. After last week’s backto-back losses over eighthplace Fraser Valley, the Giants bounced back, taking three out of a possible four points from the current second-place overall Okanagan Rockets at home. The Giants won the opening game 3-2 over the Rockets at the Burnaby Winter Club on Saturday. The two teams then played to a 2-2 draw in the Sunday morning rematch. Keegan Jones supplied the eventual game-winning goal in the opener, knocking home the Giants’ second goal of the middle period in the final seconds of the frame. Desi Burgart had given the home team a 2-0 lead, including an unassisted marker to lead off the second period. On Sunday, affiliate player Jason Village started things off for the Giants, tallying his first of the year midway through the opening period. Nash Dabb got the gametying goal for the Giants from Jones and Austin McQuay after Okanagan had struck back with two of its own in the second and third periods. The three points put the Giants in third place in a tightly packed race for the top-five positions in the standings. The Cariboo Cougars lead the pack with a record of 22-3-1 and 45 points, but the other five teams are all tightly bunched, with six points separating second from fifth place. The Giants improved their record to 16-71, just three points back of the Rockets, who fell nine points behind the firstplace Cougars in the race for top spot in the major midget league. The Giants will be taking part in the Mac’s midget tournament in Calgary over the holidays.

The New Westminster Hyacks placed second at the Bob Gair Classic senior girls’ hoop tournament last week. Lauren Denusik earned an all-star honour following a 17-point performance in New West’s 72-71 win over Killarney in overtime on Friday. Justice Steer scored a bucket with two seconds left in regulation time to send the game into OT. Madisen Obrovac also had 17 points in the Hyacks’ 4240 loss to tournament winner Edmonton Christian on Thursday. The Hyack juniors won their division at the Gair Classic, winning all three games behind an MVP weekend by Sarah Forgie, who had 25 points in a 49-47 win over Tamanawis. Mia Obrovac, with 24 points in New West’s 49-20 win over Steveston-London, was also named a tournament all-star. Aly Fieber was player of the game in New West’s win over St. Thomas More. The Grandview Steelers giveth and they taketh away. The junior B Steelers were in the spirit of giving last week, handing the leagueleading Richmond Sockeyes a 5-2 victory at Richmond Arena on Dec. 18. At home, the Giants decided to act a bit more like Scrooge, earning the Pacific Junior Hockey League club its 14th win of the year following a 3-1 win over the Langley Knights. First star Peter Matthews played the role of Ebenezer, setting up newcomer Maximillian Fritz for his second goal as a Steeler before tallying the eventual gamewinner in the final minute of the opening period with his first shorthanded goal of the year. Timothy Chow put the game out of reach with his ninth goal of the season late in the final frame.

New Westminster minor hockey association’s popular Herb House midget tournament starts this Saturday. The midget A1 Royals will host six teams in the top tier portion of the tournament. New Westminster ’s three house league teams will all vie for gold in the C division.

Games run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Saturday to Monday at Queen’s Park and Moody Park arenas. New West C3 kicks off the annual post-Christmas tourney against Port Moody. The A1 Royals host Langley at Queen’s Park at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The playoff rounds, including semifinals and

championship medal games, begin at noon with the C division bronze medal game. The C final is slated to start at 4 p.m. The A division consolation final is scheduled for 2 p.m., with the A final set for 6 p.m. All final games will be held at Queen’s Park Arena.
