School board chair steps aside Special prosecutor is investigating alleged election rule violations Julie MacLellan

The head of the New Westminster school board is stepping aside as chair amidst news of a special prosecutor’s investigation into possible election rule violations. Gurveen Dhaliwal has chosen to “take a step back from her role as chair,” vice-chair Maya Russell announced at a board meeting on Tuesday night. Russell noted Dhaliwal and the board have asked that Russell stand in as chair. “As trustee, Gurveen remains absolutely committed to supporting the important work that’s happening across our schools and here at the board table,” Russell said. “We support her in this decision, and we look forward to continuing to work Continued on page 8
TACTICAL RESPONSE: Residents of the Lions Moody Park tower were evacuated last Friday as police dealt with a man in a mental health crisis. At least 20 police vehicles descended on the retirement home at 525 Eighth St. at about noon on June 2 after a 911 call about a man in apparent distress. Tactical officers with the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team, NWPD officers with carbine rifles, a dog team and a crisis negotiator could all be seen at the scene. Residents reported the man had cut the building’s fibre-optic cable, wiping out internet, cable and phone services.
