To visit the coastal community of Seaside is to fall in love with its charm and to recognize it as the architectural sweetheart that it is. While flip-flopping through its quaint streets, one is brought face-to-mural with the reason we are all so smitten - the visionary himself, Vincent Scully. Spiritual father of New Urbanism and art and architecture historian/professor, Scully influenced more than five decades of students during his professorship at Yale. His teachings would inspire two of his students, Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, to design Seaside as one of the first communities based on New Urbanist principles. Rejecting the modernist design movement that centered around new technology, high speed roads for automobiles, strip malls, and suburban sprawl, Scully promoted a return to architectural intimacy. New Urbanism is a planning and development approach based on his concepts which encourage environmentally friendly lifestyles and compact self-contained neighborhoods infused with a wide range of housing, retail, restaurant and job types, walkability, sidewalk culture, and shared public spaces. He taught of an intimate and empathetic relationship between the built environment and those who live in it, creating more fulfilled social networking and improved well-being. Impacted by his teachings, Duany and Plater-Zyberk delivered just that in the welcoming whimsy that is Seaside.

After Scully’s death in 2017, Seaside honored his legacy with a memorial mural seen from scenic 30A that welcomes all strollers and passersby to the trendsetting town he inspired. Andrew “Gaia” Piscane, world renowned street artist, painted the memorial in only eight days and says a mural is “an aesthetic or communicative visual gesture in the urban landscape that is defined by its situation.” Gaia got his start drawing inspiration from his hometown of NYC’s many crevices and nuances, and says “I began to explore planning and policy and incorporated this conceptual vein into my conversation with the builder environment.” Seaside now joins the growing list of places throughout the world where his work is exhibited. With Gaia’s help, Scully will continue to spark conversations and lessons on Seaside’s architectural roots. And in addition to sand in their shoes, visitors will also take home a small piece of his legacy. 27

In 2017, a quick work trip brought me to 30A for the first time—but the brevity of that trip left me wishing for a longer stay to explore this incredible part of Northwest Florida. My husband Anthony and I live in Atlanta, where I run a lifestyle blog called Waiting on Martha, and a brick-and-mortar home and gift store by the same name. The hustle and bustle of city life—paired with our jam-packed schedules—regularly leaves us longing for some relaxing time away, so I jumped at the chance to partner with 360 Blue to plan an unforgettable 10 days along 30A. The team at 360 put their expertise to work and created an itinerary for our family that included four incredible properties in different locations along The Emerald Coast—Destin, Rosemary Beach, WaterColor, and Seagrove. Anthony, my parents, and I excitedly headed down to Florida, eager to explore an area we’ve long heard rave reviews about. DESTIN The first home on our itinerary was the spacious and beautiful retreat at 91 Shirah Street. This property has 4 floors, tons of space, and a super luxurious outdoor area with a private heated pool and an incredible outdoor kitchen. 35

“The first home on our itinerary was the spacious and beautiful home at 91 Shirah Street. This property has 4 floors, tons of space, and a super luxurious outdoor area with a private heated pool!”

With nine bedrooms to choose from, we certainly couldn’t have stayed in them all, but this home is the perfect place for a large or multi-generational family vacation. In addition to being a family-friendly property, this home’s central location puts you close to the many public beach access points and near all of the great amenities in Destin—including a variety of shops, restaurants, grocery stores, and lots of entertainment options. There is so much to do and see for families staying in the Destin area. Be sure to check out Beach Walk Café (located inside the Henderson Inn) for a great oceanside meal. RO S E M A RY Rosemary Beach is one of the most iconic towns in all of 30A. The cobblestone streets and stunning architecture make this idyllic beach town one of the most memorable coastal retreats in Florida. Rosemary features an abundance of locally-owned small businesses, so there’s something for couples and families alike to enjoy. Growing in popularity is the fantastic Rosemary Beach Farmer’s Market, which is held in the Rosemary Beach Town Center every Sunday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and features the most delicious foods grown locally and throughout the South, as well as international foods from around the world. While in Rosemary Beach, our family stayed at 216 Round Road, which is aptly named “Serenity Now” and lives up to all expectations its name implies. This home’s outdoor space transports you to the Mediterranean with its terra cotta roof, covered patio breezeway, and dark wood design elements that pop against the home’s white exteriors. A large private pool and spacious carriage house make this property a perfect place for big families, and Rosemary’s community pools and pocket parks provide outdoor entertainment for all ages. One of the best parts about staying in Rosemary Beach is that you get the convenience of nearby Panama City Beach and the luxury and exclusivity of a small beach community. The team at 360 Blue booked a round of golf at Camp Creek Golf Course for our golf-loving guys, which was easily one of their favorite parts of the trip. While they played, my mom and I enjoyed a private, in-home yoga session with a wonderful instructor from Yoga Haus. We loved this experience and highly recommend it for yogis and beginners alike. What a refreshing way to start a wonderful day on vacation! There is no shortage of incredible restaurants in Rosemary. Although we did a lot of cooking on our trip, we loved having tapas at La Crema and lunch at George’s in Alys Beach—two places you must try while you’re in town! 37

WAT E RC O L O R If you’re looking for the ultimate place in 30A for families, WaterColor’s your spot. With tons of parks, biking and walking trails galore, community pools, and a newly-finished beach club, there’s something for families of all sizes and all ages while in WaterColor! 360 Blue offers a wealth of incredible homes in the area, from cozy, one-bedroom carriage houses to large homes perfect for a reunion or multiple families! We loved the spacious porches (a staple among homes in WaterColor) and close proximity to the beach. The good news is that 360 Blue has over 250 amazing properties in WaterColor to choose from! The highlight of our time in WaterColor has to be the private, in-home wine tasting with Chef Kali. Knowing of my love of cooking good food and enjoying incredible wines, 360 Blue’s Concierge Services team booked the most decadent four-course wine dinner for us, complete with crab cakes that I still have dreams about! WaterColor’s location makes it a great, walkable beach town with lots of shops and restaurants—and neighboring Seaside is within walking distance too. Or if walking’s not your thing, each 360 Blue home comes with custom adult beachcruiser bikes, perfect for exploring while you ride. S E AG ROV E Oh, Seagrove, Seagrove, Seagrove. Of all the 30A areas we visited, you for sure stole my heart. The quiet beach community vibe of Seagrove is exactly what we’re looking for in a perfect beach getaway, and we found that (and so much more!) during our stay here. Seagrove has fewer crowds than most of the towns along 30A or in Destin, and from what we could tell, most of the homes are within walking distance to the beach. The team at 360 picked out a wonderful Seagrove home for us. 119 Dune Estates Blvd was the perfect high-end yet casual oceanside property. We loved this house so much that we really only left to stock up on essentials. Instead, we enjoyed being a block from the beach and seeing the sparkling emerald waters from our home’s third-story covered porch. The gourmet kitchen—complete with tons of bright white cabinetry—was the perfect setting for me to bask in my element and to prepare a fresh, coastal meal with seafood from Goatfeathers. We had plenty of space in the living areas to enjoy a movie night in,

which we did all three nights we were here! For the more adventurous vacationers, Seagrove offers a biking/running trail that winds along 30A,and offers easy access to both WaterSound and Seaside. Aside from the pristine, sugar white sand beaches and vibrant emerald waters, 30A is home to some of the best local establishments in all of Florida—including incredible restaurants, lovely shops, and fun entertainment. If you’re like me and want to experience a taste of the different 30A seaside towns, a great way to do that is by visiting local restaurants along the coast—it’s a perfect way to immerse yourself in the lifestyle and to experience the gems that locals regularly enjoy. The tacos at Chiringo have me longing to return to 30A, and next time we’ll definitely be staying in Grayton Beach to get a taste of other local favorites!

ELISABETH &

B Y E M I LY F I E S E R

There’s a common saying that “one should never trust a skinny baker.” While perhaps true in some circles, Elisabeth Farris of the blog “Elisabeth and Butter” proves that all wrong with her mouthwatering creations and her everything-in-moderation approach. It’s no wonder you’re as likely to see her in a Pure Barre class as you are watching her hunched over in the kitchen testing recipes and hand painting cookies. Along with the extensive research Elisabeth undertakes for each recipe posted, she prides herself on showing others that baking and cookie-painting is something not to be intimated

by, but rather a skill anyone can learn and enjoy doing. Needless to say, I was intrigued and even more delighted to know that she taught cookie painting classes right in our backyard of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. I first met Elisabeth in the spring of 2018. A mutual friend mentioned that Elisabeth was new to the area and, along with running a specialty order business, managed a blog with multiple partnerships, including one with Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James lifestyle brand. If that were not enough, she’s also working with major

59

60

publications such as Southern Living, overseeing an Instagram account with over 33,000 followers, and teaching cookie painting classes. I was eager to learn more and realized after perusing through her blog and Instagram account for half an hour (and just maybe drooling over items like her lavender blueberry muďŹƒns and her Mom’s infamous carrot cake) that this was someone utterly passionate about baking. Growing up in Montgomery Alabama, Elisabeth began undertaking a serious interest in baking at the age of 13. Alongside her Mom and two

sisters, she started spending a significant amount of time in the kitchen, learning the basics and hand-painting cookies. During her time in high school and later in college at Auburn University, friends and acquaintances frequently asked her to create everything from themed cookies, birthday cupcakes and wedding cakes. Elisabeth even remembers leaving her high school homecoming game early because she had a large order due the next day. To state her creations are just pretty and taste good would be an understatement. After trying one of her cookies and tasting the buttery dough, the creamy frosting, and the undertones

61

of vanilla, I understood why Elisabeth’s cookies were so delicious. What really appeals to anyone who encounters Elisabeth and Butter online and in person is that she makes baking a fun experience for anyone of any age. Growing up it was daunting to even flip through my Mom’s cookbooks and try to mimic the flawless iced cakes and perfectly sculptured pie crusts, but Elisabeth breaks the process down step-by-step, leaving no tip or secret untold. I recently had the pleasure of witnessing Elisabeth in her element during a cookie painting class for a group of kids and realized how approachable she made the entire process. Elisabeth usually arrives 10-15 minutes before her two-hour class starts. She brings all materials, including brushes, paints, workstations, and, of course, her delectable sugar cookies. Class begins with an introduction and overview which she tailors to her audience. With this particular 62

young group Elisabeth delves into the process more quickly, successfully keeping the attention of all in the room (except for one, who decided eating the cookie first would be best). After delicately outlining the edge of the cookies with a piped frosting tip, Elisabeth describes the process with which to mix and create the various paint colors. Everyone started to whip up brilliant pinks, oranges, greens and blues, ideal for the beachthemed cookies that included, amongst others, flamingos, pineapples and palm tree shapes. After the outline has dried, Elisabeth explains how to flood the interior of the cookie while staying within the lines. Tools like toothpicks and brushes are used to slather the shape and provide it with the base coating. What started out as a cluster of beige-colored pucks morphed into a multi-colored rainbow of sugar cookies. Following with super fine paint brushes, Elisabeth illustrates that light brush stokes across the dried iced cookie will produce a secondary dimension, enabling one to essentially draw on top of the

icing. Designs including hearts, polka dots and smiling faces all made their debut in class and Elisabeth encouraged everyone to think outside of the box. Lastly, the optional sprinkle was added for a truly multidimensional and beautiful treat.

painting classes enable the whole family to come together and partake. Her classes have also served for many as the ideal rainy day activity and something for all to do when a break from the beach is much needed.

While this particular class focused on those ages 10 and younger, Elisabeth also specializes in sip and paint classes, where wine, champagne and appetizers all make an appearance as participants create their own sugar cookie designs on whatever theme they decide. By catering to a whole range of ages, levels, experiences, Elisabeth’s cookie

Whether looking to just try your creative hand on a different medium or, more simply, you love dessert, then take the plunge and book a cookie painting class with Elisabeth of Elisabeth and Butter. Between her passion for baking and her enthusiastic spirit, you will walk away feeling inspired, if not at least full from her delectable delights.

charcuterie

[SHÄR-ˌKÜ-TƏ-ˈRĒ]

“A DELICATESSEN SPECIALIZING IN DRESSED MEATS AND MEAT DISHES”

71

Quick! Think of something you would pull out of your refrigerator for last minute guests. Aside from wine (hopefully I am not the only one), I’m guessing this includes an assorted mix of cheeses, meats, olives or peppers, crackers, maybe some hummus, dips, and cut up vegetables. Before you know it, you have created a personal charcuterie board that looks like something straight out of Wine World’s kitchen (maybe not, but we can try) and your guests will be thrilled. Merriam-Webster defines charcuterie [shär-ˌkü-tə-ˈrē] as “a delicatessen specializing in dressed meats and meat dishes.” While true, charcuterie, when used to depict a board or tray of sorts, has recently come to mean a whole slew of definitions. Everything from vegan, paleo, nut free, even candy-centric boards have populated Instagram feeds and become the new “charcuterie.” Perhaps what makes these a hostess favorite is that you can quickly place all of your working pieces on a single tray and as Emeril would say, “Bam! You are ready to entertain. 72

Of course, there are some helpful tips to follow along if you really want to impress your friends. Best to help us with all of our charcuterie needs is Riley Roberson, Wine World’s Cheese Department Manager and Charcuterie Board Guru (okay, the latter isn’t her technical title). Riley has only been with Wine World in Destin for three years, but you would think her creations were something she has been executing for decades. Each tray is carefully crafted with rules Riley has come to follow, ensuring each is tasty and aesthetically pleasing. “Before she even digs into what she plans to use, questions such as what kind of beer or wine is being consumed during the function, how many people does it need to feed, and what kind of cheeses the client likes are some that Riley starts off with to gain a better understanding of what will pair well and look good.” Other factors also taken into consideration include whether there are any dietary restrictions or allergies that need to be noted. Charcuterie boards also serve as a medium for exploring other flavors and provisions. Riley explained that charcuterie boards from Wine World provide an excellent way for customers to discover new cheeses they might not otherwise have selected on their own. This exact situation presented itself when I was at a recent event where a Wine World cheese tray was an appetizer. Not only were most people congregating around this slab of snacks, but cheeses like Coupole: an aged goats’ milk cheese with a wrinkly edible rind and bright, fresh taste and Delice de Bourgogne: a salty, sour, and tart flavor, with a mushroom-y punch that wraps flavors together and BellaVitano Merlot: a rich, creamy cheese with berry and plum notes of Merlot, all became our new favorites we otherwise would not have selected. Along with selecting your various cheese types, Riley recommends determining what the cheese base will be when it is transferred from the platter to your mouth. Most often selected is bread or crackers. To balance out the palate and include other textures, Riley also suggests incorporating salty, sweet and sour elements. Salty examples would be thinly-sliced meats, nuts and olives. Sour flavors generally include fruits and pickles, while the sweet component often consists of jam, chocolate and honey. Pomegranate seeds are also used as filler in small open spots. By including a variety of items that mesh well together, charcuterie boards prove to be versatile and tasty, and a popular item at Wine World. For those of us who fail to live within driving distance of a Wine World, or perhaps our bank accounts keep us from ordering these professionally crafted boards routinely, serving up a sharp-looking tray is something anyone can undertake. By incorporating Riley’s tools of the trade and keeping a few key products on hand, it is easy to create a delicious centerpiece that will have all of your guests slicing, spreading and indulging in, during your next culinary gathering. 73

Walton county’s coastal dune lakes are rare geological features that only occur in a small number of places in the world.

While more than one million visitors flock to the Emerald Coast every year for it’s beaches and 30A culture, Walton County is also known for the rare and picturesque coastal dune lakes that help make up the unique terrain of our coastline. Whether burrowed in private coves or visible alongside stretches of road on Scenic Highway 30A, Walton county’s coastal dune lakes are rare geological features that only occur in a small number of places in the world, including Madagascar, New Zealand, Australia — and right here in the Florida Panhandle. One of these topographical rarities is Lake Powell, a coastal dune lake adjacent to Camp Helen and Inlet Beach. 81

If you’ve never experienced boating on Lake Powell, you will find that it offers some of the most tranquil views of our area. And there may be no more magical time of day to be on the lake than sunset. 360 Blue now offers its guests sunset cruises, which set sail at 5:30 PM, and depart from the Bay County Lake Powell Public Boat Launch. While on the pontoon cruise, you will experience uninterrupted views of sunset-hued dunes and towering pines. Guests can enjoy alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages as well as appetizers from locally made pasta to sandwiches and kebas. Nature buffs may be interested in taking one of the provided YOLO Boards for a paddle on a nearby outfall, which is shallow enough for kids to splash and play – and maybe find a mollusk or two. Narrated by knowledgeable guides, this 3-hour excursion gives a raw look into Florida’s off-the-grid and untouched environment. If you’re looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of 30A and Destin, this is it! Whether spent with family members or with a significant other, a tour around Lake Powell is perhaps one of 360 Blue’s most loved excursions. When the tour ends, transportation to and from the dock is included, making this a truly hassle-free evening during which you’ll be glad you ate that extra shrimp kebab.

HOMEMADE BAKED GRANOLA BARS 1 2/3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats 1/3 cup old-fashioned oats, processed till finely ground in a blender 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds, coconut flakes or a combination 1/4 cup flax seeds 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1/4 cup honey 1/4 cup melted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon water Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a 9-inch by 13-inch pan. In a large bowl, mix the rolled oats, processed rolled oats, sugar, salt, cinnamon, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, and cranberries together. In a separate bowl, whisk the honey, melted butter, vanilla extract, and water until well blended. Pour into the bowl with oats. Mix well. Spread the granola in the prepared pan and firmly pat down. To make sure, pat the granola down again. Bake until the granola is golden around the edges, 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from the oven, loosen the edges and cool for about 5 minutes. Use a sharp knife or bench scraper to cut the bars while they are still in the pan, carefully remove and cool on a wire rack. The granola bars will keep up to a week when wrapped individually with plastic wrap. If the kitchen is humid, it is best to store the bars in the refrigerator.

We are strengthening communities! From across the world in Burkina Faso, West Africa, to right next door in Panama City, The Sonder Project is to strengthen comunities through food security, clean water, housing and education. We empower our international partners by building irrigated community farms and digging wells, and we work domestically by restoring homes post-Hurricane Michael and establishing community gardens.

"Neighbors helping neighbors." Neighbors helping neighbors. It’s what connects and bonds us throughout this journey of shared human experience. While helping neighbors in times of trouble is one of the South’s many charms, The Sonder Project has made “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” its mantra and raised the bar, by far. The word “sonder” originates from the realization that everyone has a story – equally vivid, complex, and unique – both individually and alongside his neighbor. Only sometimes our stories hit a bump in the road and need a neighborly boost. So in 2014, a handful of South Walton entrepreneurs joined forces and hearts to help better its neighbors’ individual stories, improve their local community, and according to co-founder Ashley Horsley, just simply “do some good in the world.” Out of this organic goal to fight hunger and poverty, the non-profit Sonder Project organization was born. Driving to bring awareness to food security, clean water, and education, The Sonder Project works tirelessly to build community and school gardens and teaches its neighbors in need the sustainability and partnership tools required to continue its efforts successfully. Partnering with 360 Blue, the 30A company, and YOLO Board, this local labor of love even went global, turning international strangers into neighbors. Going as far as West Africa’s impoverished Burkina Faso to “do some good,” they built the community’s first school, supplied irrigation and dug wells for clean drinking water, and built gardens providing sustainable food sources for its newfound neighbors. Just good people doing good things, both near and far. But on October 10, 2018, the need was near. When Hurricane Michael, the most powerful Category 4 storm ever to hit the Florida Panhandle, ravaged the lives and homes of our immediate neighbors along the Gulf Coast, the unimaginable devastation left thousands of people without access to food, water, or housing. The deadly winds and rain trapped many residents inside their homes as their roofs were ripped off, their trees were snapped crushing cars and structures, their homes were destroyed, and their communities were rendered unrecognizable around them. Survivors described seeing walls of white outside their windows while fighting to hold doors closed in the face of the relentless wind. The monster storm left nearly 140,000 people without power and did an estimated $4.9 billion in 109

"In less than a day’s time, the amount of need for basic shelter, food, and water overwhelmed entire communities and left families grasping for just a shred of hope." property damage. The number of insurance claims for residential property following the storm soared to 88,000. There was no home or life in Michael’s path untouched. The devastation was raw and without mercy. In less than a day’s time, the amount of need for basic shelter, food, and water overwhelmed entire communities and left families grasping for just a shred of hope. The day after the storm, the Sonder Project took immediate action with volunteers on the ground in Bay County offering heartfelt help. The shock and sheer magnitude of devastation and need kept the organization’s volunteers returning daily and working round the clock to help its neighbors. As word of the Sonder Project’s efforts got out into the shattered remains of neighborhoods, requests flooded in. People needed immediate help. The palpable desperation was everywhere. With rallying donations of food, water, money, and time from helping hearts near and far, the organization was able to orchestrate a highly organized daily operation of relief volunteer efforts that is still going street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood, and family by family to help emergency officials slowly mend broken homes and hearts. Debris and trees have been cleared from yards, roofs have been tarped to keep out the rain, and electrical and structural repairs have been made to homes. The Sonder Project became the hope that was so desperately needed and motivated communities to unite and fight for their neighborhoods. 110

“I see a coming together of people within the community. I see people outside the community coming in helping out and asking, ‘What do you need?’ So it brings out the humanity in people. Everybody seems to want to help,” says David Ganzy, a lifelong local who received help repairing his home from The Sonder Project and was then inspired to spread the love and extend help to his neighbors. With the support of volunteers, over 5,770 hours of neighbors helping neighbors has transpired since Hurricane Michael made landfall. Because of all of the generous donations, 189 homes have been strengthened and repaired, mountains of basic supplies have been distributed, and 3 homes are being rebuilt in the Springfield and Millville areas. And all the while, Sonder Project volunteers have prepared and provided countless hot meals to anyone and everyone in need. With every meal provided, with every roof tarped, with every tree limb removed, the Sonder Project volunteers also offered hope, healing, and heart-to-heart connections born of shared understanding. And because the holiday season was on the heels of the hurricane, 28 families were sponsored for Sonder Project’s Secret Santa for Christmas, including Celissia and her 5-year-old son. The organization was able to provide temporary housing for the mother-son duo while they gutted and repaired the family’s home. After some brief cameos from the Sonder Project, Celissia and her son have since returned home and they are back to starring in their own stories. While we each have our own sonder story, unique and alongside our neighbor, the impacts of Hurricane Michael have reminded us to take the time to listen to our neighbor’s story and offer a helping hand. As long as neighbors are helping neighbors, our stories will intertwine and tell one story of humanity as a whole. The Sonder Project, still on the ground seeing relief efforts through to completion, is paving the way for that story…one neighbor at a time.
