F E AT U RE WATERSOUND CLUB’S new zero-entry, 80,000-gallon pool features a lazy river and a 25-foot waterslide.

WORTH THE WAIT New amenities set to open at Watersound® Club Written By PRATT FARMER

Y

ears in the making, phase one of the new amenity package at Watersound Club is scheduled to open in summer of 2022, adjacent to Camp Creek Golf Course. Members and guests are certain to be delighted with the new amenities, including two pools, a lazy river, waterslide and wellness center. Members will likewise be able to enjoy a new casual dining restaurant, a game room for the kids and massive amounts of green space surrounding the new amenities. Everyone knows that water is an essential part of leisure life, and there will be an abundance of water with the new amenities. No doubt the new 80,000-gallon, zero-entry pool and surrounding deck will become the place to be. With ample umbrellas, lounge chairs and tables, it offers the perfect spot to sunbathe, catch up with friends and family, read a book or maybe even take an afternoon nap. If you are looking for a little more activity, then the lazy river — which will flow endlessly,

20

to the delight of young and old — will be high on your list, and the new 25-foot waterslide is certain to thrill. One of the most talked about features is the new wellness center. An all-new staff dedicated to helping Members plan their exercise program will be a wonderful addition to member services and programming. Nowhere will that be more readily apparent than in the spin classes, according to Amy Robison, Watersound Club’s director of wellness and outdoor pursuits. “To get participants reaching new heights in their spin class, the instructor will nudge, cajole and invigorate everyone from an elevated stage area. That, combined with electrifying music and an incredible light program will most definitely have everyone energized,” Robison said. A number of fitness class offerings, such as Bootcamp, HIIT or TRX, are planned to accommodate just about any schedule. Regardless of where you might be in your fitness journey, these programs are tailored to meet

your needs. Members will be able to take advantage of a personal trainer to map out a path to a healthier lifestyle. Trainers plan to offer one-on-one, couples and semi-private group sessions. Many Members requested a lap pool, so one of the new amenities coming to the wellness center is a 19-meter pool that will be ideal for those serious about swimming. Did you know that the ancient Greeks and Romans built pools for athletic training in palaestras — ancient gymnasiums — for nautical games and military exercises? The pool just outside the wellness center won’t host any military exercises, but it will be perfect for swimming laps. No doubt that after an hour in spin class, a dip in the adult pool just outside the center will be a welcomed respite, and on chilly mornings the pool will be heated. For kids ages 11 to 17, an approximately 2,500-squarefoot game room features television, gaming tables,

comfortable seating and an outdoor space with a half basketball court, frisbee lawn and more. Adjacent to the children’s club is an incredible playground with agespecific equipment for children ages 2-5 and 5-12. Disc swings, slides and a climbing apparatus will challenge and entertain children, while ample shade sails will help to cool things down on hot summer days. With plans to open daily at 11 a.m., and with seating for up to 135 people, a new restaurant called Bark ‘N Brine will treat Members and their guests to an exquisite offering of both food and drink. Table service inside and out provides the option to take advantage of the comfort of air conditioning or enjoy the fresh air carried along on a breeze blowing between tall longleaf pines. “We aim to provide a well-rounded menu that fits the lifestyle of our Members,” says Club general manager Manny Belete. “You’ll be able to sit down with family and friends for a leisurely lunch or grab something on-the-go.”

According to a recent news story, tennis had the highest rate of growth among traditional sports, picking up nearly 4 million new or returning players, after a decade of stagnant growth. Most attribute the pandemic for this rebounding interest in tennis. Because it is usually played outdoors and naturally allows for social distancing between players, the sport seems to check all the boxes. Likewise, pickleball is also quickly making gains in popularity. This sport combines elements of badminton, table tennis and traditional tennis; as it shares features with these other racket sports, such as, the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules somewhat similar to tennis. “We expect there to be additional demand for tennis instruction at the Club, so we have added another tennis pro,” says Barry Webb, Watersound Club director of tennis. With all these new amenities scheduled to open for Members this summer, another addition is planned to open later this year. Camp Creek Inn is a boutique inn designed with a Creole-inspired atmosphere; upscale, yet approachable, in every detail. Its featured restaurant, ANR, references the Apalachicola Northern Railroad, a short-line railroad that operated in the Florida Panhandle beginning in the early 1900s. Old photographs and other memorabilia in the restaurant will help tell the story of this rail line that helped shape the history of Northwest Florida.

Members have looked forward to the opening of the pro shop housed in Camp Creek Inn. The shop will carry a variety of brands suited to the golfer shopping for new clubs, apparel or the perfect gift. To further capitalize on the natural beauty of the Club’s surroundings, a fire pit will serve as a centerpiece where Members and their guests can gather around a welcoming fire. To make certain that guest rooms at the Camp Creek Inn exceed expectations, the designers began with construction of a room completely decorated to exacting specifications. “This is an effort to go a bit above and beyond so that the entire design team has an opportunity to provide input and to personally be able to kick the tires, if you will,” says Mike Jansen, vice president of club operations for Watersound Club. Camp Creek Inn is expected to open the summer of 2022, so Members can use the hotel as a convenient place for visiting guests to stay. The extensive development of these Watersound Club amenities has been an enormous task with many teams working in concert to bring this dream to reality. Most importantly, however, is that these new amenities answer a call from our Members for a more vibrant community with a plethora of offerings. For those Members, there should be no doubt that the wait has been worth it.

UP, UP AND AWAY! Growth at The St. Joe Company’s nearby developments contribute to, and benefit from, growth at Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport Written By WILLY DUFFY

NORTHWEST Florida Beaches International Airport served over 1.6 million passengers in 2021, a record for the 12-yearold airport.

orthwest Florida Beaches International Airport, the entry point to Panama City Beach and the surrounding area for travelers seeking the fastest route to the coast, served more than 1.6 million passengers in 2021. That’s a record for the 12-year-old airport that is served by four major airlines offering daily flights to more than a dozen destinations. In recent years, the airport expanded its terminal and added additional flights to keep up with growing demand. Similar growth and increased demand are evident throughout Northwest Florida, including at many of The St. Joe Company’s residential, commercial and hospitality developments in the vicinity of the airport. As more visitors discover the benefits of life in this region, the demand for places to live, work, play and stay is growing in lockstep with demand at the airport. At VentureCrosings® Enterprise Centre, The St. Joe Company’s business park adjacent to the airport, the company opened a Hilton Garden Inn in the summer of 2021. Within days of opening, the 143-room hotel filled up with beach-going vacationers, business travelers and flight crews looking for a convenient place to stay. Just down the street from the hotel, St. Joe has seen leasable space filling up at its 60,000-square-foot light industrial/warehouse spaces.

The growth and prosperity of the airport, St. Joe’s various projects and Northwest Florida in general are all interrelated. As more people vacation here, do business here or make this their full-time residence, the airport sees increased passenger counts, our hotels, retail center and business parks benefit, demand is created in our residential communities and an economic impact is felt throughout the region.” — Jorge Gonzalez, President and CEO of The St. Joe Company

More tenants are excited to establish a Bay County base of operations to provide services and materials for the region’s booming growth. Central Moloney Inc., an Arkansas-based company that was no doubt lured by the proximity to the airport and the booming local economy, recently announced plans to occupy 140,000 square feet in the business park. Central Moloney manufactures distribution transformers and transformer components. Just a short distance from the airport is the Latitude Margaritaville Watersound Community, an active-adult community inspired by the lyrics and lifestyle of songwriter Jimmy Buffett, which is being developed by The St. Joe Company and partner Minto Communities USA. The neighborhood welcomed its first residents in 2021 and has seen tremendous home sales from buyers seeking the Margaritaville lifestyle as they make plans for “growing older but not up,” to borrow a line from Jimmy Buffett himself. With hundreds of its planned 3,500 homes sold or under contract in just the first year, it seems that it won’t be long before thousands of 55 and better residents are calling Latitude Margaritaville Watersound home. These new residents, in addition to the millions of people who visit Panama City Beach each year, will certainly be looking for places to eat, shop and be entertained. With that in mind, The St. Joe Company broke ground in 2021 on Watersound West Bay Center, a planned lifestyle shopping center at the entrance of the Latitude Margaritaville Watersound community. Plans call for several mixed-use buildings featuring retail and restaurant space on the first floor with office space above. The center, which includes plans for a grocery store, has the potential to include approximately 350,000 square feet of leasable space once it’s built out. Judging by the pace of growth, it stands to reason that it won’t be long before Watersound West Bay Center is home to a bustling shopping and dining scene for residents who will be just a golf cart ride away. Taking advantage of the location, a public marina is planned on the nearby Intracoastal Waterway.

28

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

◆ WATERSOUND LIFESTYLE

Just down State Road 79, The St. Joe Company is busy developing the Ward Creek Community, a planned 1,600-homesite community located approximately 4 miles from the white sand and turquoise water of Panama City Beach, and only about a 15-minute drive from the airport. If progress on the development goes according to plan, the Ward Creek community will welcome its first residents in 2023. A growing region needs services and infrastructure to support its new residents, vacationers and businesses. Evidence of these efforts can be seen near the airport and all the nearby developments. State Road 388, the road that travelers use to get to the airport, is currently being realigned and widened to four lanes. Not far from the planned Ward Creek community, the Phillip Griffitts Sr. Parkway recently opened, providing an additional east-west artery in Panama City Beach. At the intersection of this new roadway and State Road 79, The St. Joe Company, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare and Florida State University’s College of Medicine have plans for a medical campus to include a 100-bed hospital, medical office buildings and research facilities. Site work is expected to begin on this future community asset later in 2022. “The growth and prosperity of the airport, St. Joe’s various projects and Northwest Florida in general are all interrelated,” explained Jorge Gonzalez, President and CEO of The St. Joe Company. “As more people vacation here, do business here or make this their full-time residence, the airport sees increased passenger counts, our hotels, retail center and business parks benefit, demand is created in our residential communities and an economic impact is felt throughout the region.” The economic growth in the region and the growth of Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport are undoubtedly linked and are sure to remain so. As the saying goes, “a rising tide lifts all boats.” By the looks of things at and around the airport, it is safe to say that the tide in Northwest Florida is certainly on its way up.

THERE'S ROOM for newcomers with 3,500 new homes planned at the Latitude Margaritaville Watersound Community, and the 143-room Hilton Garden Inn now open adjacent to the airport.

n contrast to the high-rise hotels and condos that seem almost to overwhelm other beaches, WaterColor Inn on Scenic Highway 30A, with its cozy, beach-house feel, reflects a kind of understated, grounded confidence. Here is a property and an experience that brings people back year after year for a stay in one of the Southeast’s most beautiful areas. Built in 2002, WaterColor Inn meshes closely with its surroundings in concept, design and atmosphere. Friendly and laid-back with a focus on fine service, WaterColor Inn offers guests a sanctuary nestled between the Gulf of Mexico, Western Lake and an adjoining a longleaf pine forest, giving it a unique appeal. Originally designed by architect David Rockwell, the resort has undergone extensive renovations over the last 20 years, the most recent of which was begun in the fall of 2021. Watersound Club Members will be especially interested in a new dining concept that has come about with the WaterColor Inn’s latest renovation. “One of the new amenities we’re most excited about is Gather Kitchen + Bar and how it will complement the new, larger pool deck area,” said Gabrielle Testa, general manager of WaterColor Inn. “The restaurant and pool will only be available to Watersound Club Members and guests of the hotel, so this is going to add a nice, exclusive feature. It’s a more private space, and the food at Gather is going to reflect upscale, healthier options — it’s a touch of what you’d expect from a coastal spa — a kind of fusion of Southern Coastal cuisine and California’s health-conscious movement.

“We’ll offer an all-day menu with service either inside or at the pool and cabanas, and our chefs are excited to get creative with weekly dinner features showcasing seasonal highlights from local farms and fisheries.” With the completion of this latest round of renovations, guests staying at the hotel will also have new accommodation options available to them. “We wanted to bring more family-friendly amenities to the property, which meant adding seven new suites — two onebedroom suites with a bunk bed area and five two-bedroom suites — each with private patios,” said Testa. “These new suites are all on the first level and have been constructed where our meeting space was originally located, which capitalizes on the space more than we had been,” she added. The COVID-19 pandemic reminded Testa that the WaterColor Inn experience holds a special place in the hearts of families who have grown up along with the WaterColor community, and that a visit to the resort means more than just a break from everyday life — visits to WaterColor Inn become part of a family’s shared memory and legacy. “It was time to maximize our space in a way that would appeal more to families,” Testa said. “Vacation rentals are very heavy in this region. Being able to provide a stay at the beach combined with the hospitality experience of room service and our other amenities offers the best of both worlds.” More amenities are on the way. “A new zero-entry family pool with a kids’ area is under

“WaterColor experiences are inspired by our surroundings, from the coastal elegance of our beachfront guest rooms and suites to the locally sourced menus and captivating Gulf views at our restaurant concepts.” — Gabrielle Testa, GM of WaterColor Inn construction, along with an expanded outdoor lounge area complete with tables and umbrellas,” Testa enthusiastically explained. Work has begun on a new indoor/outdoor bar as part of the reimagined Gather Kitchen + Bar, which will also be available only to hotel guests and Watersound Club Lifestyle Members. Further construction for guests of the property includes a hydrotherapy whirlpool and hot tub area and a new cardio room. The expansion and renovations, expected to be complete by summer, have caused parts of the property to be closed for brief periods. However, WaterColor Inn’s extraordinary level of personal attention and overall excellence is unaffected by work on the improvements. “WaterColor Inn is a place that people recognize as their second home because they come here every year. Our guests are like our family, and we make them feel that,” Testa said. “We remember your name and the things that you like because that’s important in creating the best possible experience.” Its uncompromised quality has brought the WaterColor Inn coveted distinctions — it is a Forbes Four-Star and AAA Four-Diamond boutique hotel. 36

“WaterColor experiences are inspired by our surroundings, from the coastal elegance of our beachfront guest rooms and suites to the locally sourced menus and captivating Gulf views at our restaurant concepts,” Testa said. “Pebbled footpaths wind through picturesque parks and gardens throughout our grounds, leading the way to a boathouse, tennis courts, shops, restaurants and a private beach. All of this provides an exceptional atmosphere and a special place to come and vacation with your family.” By adding improvements, St. Joe is polishing the gem that WaterColor Inn has always been. Its collection of accolades — both from guests and the hospitality industry — speaks volumes about its extraordinary standing in the world of resorts. Still, there is nothing stuffy here, nothing overly fussy or pretentious. Here, the inn’s staff welcomes you as they would an old friend. They may even offer you a cookie. ust as much as with golf courses, swimming pools and beach bonfires, Watersound Club dining venues are where Member memories are made. Later this year, the Club will open the doors to three new dining venues. Each will feature its own unique charm and flavors, while maintaining the approachable comfort that makes Watersound Club such a special place. These new dining venues that are part of a major amenity expansion adjacent to Camp Creek® Golf Course are scheduled to be completed by summer 2022. Our team spent much of this spring perfecting recipes and giving Members an opportunity to sample new menu items that will complement what is currently offered at Watersound ® Beach Club and Shark’s Tooth Golf Course. “Club Members are seeking options and variety,” said Vicki Burris, director of membership for Watersound Club. “With three new dining venues, we are doubling the options our Members can select when looking for a great meal. Adding a casual poolside spot, a cozy restaurant and lounge and a new indoor dinner concept to what we already have in place will give Watersound Club a slate of dining venues that will please every palate.” Here’s a preview of the types of new and unique culinary experiences coming to each of these new dining venues:

ANR An elevated experience in an approachable setting Named to honor the Apalachicola Northern Railroad that connected the Forgotten Coast to the country at large from 1903 to 2002, this dining venue will cater to Watersound Club Members seeking an elevated dining experience. Focused on infusing dishes with regional flair and flavors, our team has crafted ANR’s menu to include tastes inspired by the culinary heritage of towns and cities stretching from Florida’s Gulf Coast to the French Creole area of New Orleans, in a selection of entrees we call “Southern Town Mains.” From artisan meats and cheeses, selected daily by our culinary team, to regionally sourced seafood dishes and seasonal fruits and vegetables, ANR’s comfortable yet inspired menu will offer what is sure to be a dining experience unlike any other. Guests can look forward to being welcomed to their tables with house-made skillet cornbread and Creole butter. Watersound Club Members and their guests can visit ANR for dinner served nightly in the elegant inside dining area or on the outside patio, where a fireplace will add to the evening’s ambiance. Weekend brunches will feature live music and a delicious Bloody Mary bar.

AN ESSENTIAL

BALANCE Responsible development requires concern for sustainability Written By STEVE BORNHOFT

“We live here, our families live here and we grew up here, so it’s important to us intrinsically to preserve and maintain the environment in pristine condition as much as we can.” — Catherine McCloy, St. Joe’s director of planning and development

I

n 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) as part of a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that, by 2030, all people will enjoy peace and prosperity. The goals, then, may be more aspirational than achievable, but they do provide a framework worthy of pursuit and one that relates closely in several regards to the activities of developers in Northwest Florida, including the most land-rich of them all, The St. Joe Company. Among the 17 goals, here are four with strong applications to regional development activity: ■

S USTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES. Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

■

LIFE BELOW WATER. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

■

LIFE ON LAND. Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems; sustainably manage forests; combat desertification; halt and reverse land degradation; halt biodiversity loss.

■

GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all people at all ages.

City Beach, Florida, feels a responsibility to safeguard the environment even as it proceeds to create neighborhoods, establish businesses and bring about new development. “Beyond federal, state and local requirements, we have internal frameworks and guidelines that we abide by,” said Catherine McCloy, St. Joe’s director of planning and development. “We live here, our families live here and we grew up here, so it’s important to us intrinsically to preserve and maintain the environment in pristine condition as much as we can.” Ten years before the United Nations adopted its SDGs, The St. Joe Company, working with state and federal agencies such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, voluntarily established regional general permits and ecosystem management agreements. “They set aside certain areas for conservation,” McCloy explained. “There are thresholds on how much wetlands we impact. We abide by stormwater management guidelines that are 50% more strict than those required by government regulators. They add up to an environmental planning framework that affects how we plan and how we move forward with development.” St. Joe is in the unique position of being able to set aside thousands of contiguous acres for conservation purposes versus isolated little green spaces. Of the 110,000 acres in its state-approved Bay-Walton Sector Plan, 53,000 acres are reserved for conservation. “What entity other than a government agency is able and willing to set aside that amount of land for restoration and preservation?” McCloy rhetorically asked. An Ecosystem Management Agreement executed between The St. Joe Company and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection relies heavily on the concept of Conservation Units, said to be “areas of highquality habitat and landscape function, which have been identified and are to be excluded from development.” Conservation Units specified by the agreement link wildlife corridors and protect uplands and wetlands from St. Andrew Bay to the Point Washington State Forest and Devil’s Swamp mitigation bank. St. Joe, as the owner of the bank, sells mitigation credits to smaller developers so that they can satisfy regulators’ set-aside requirements.

Further connections extend to Northwest Florida Water Management District lands and eventually the Choctawhatchee floodplain and Bay systems. “The result is a two-pronged bay-to-bay wildlife corridor which helps preserve the ecological integrity of two of Northwest Florida’s most rapidly developing watersheds,” the agreement notes. The Ecosystem Management Agreement team identified five ecological criteria for analyzing and selecting areas for inclusion in Conservation Units: regional significance, biodiversity, water quality, essential fish habitat and nursery/living marine resources. Agreements, McCloy said, apply to developments both little and big — an addition to St. Joe’s Breakfast Point residential neighborhood located within blocks of its corporate headquarters, on one hand, or on the other, the potential 170,000 residential dwellings included in the Bay-Walton Sector Plan, the equivalent of a midsized city under development north of Panama City Beach. Wetlands delineations, soil analyses, flora and fauna inventories and the locations of water bodies, creeks and tributaries all figure in the compiling of agreements. McCloy, in her role, gets involved in drafting site plans, including provisions for pocket parks, conservation areas and stormwater retention ponds. “We take into consideration wetlands, topography and where water naturally wants to go,” she said. “We plan around the environmental features that are in place, extend roadway networks and fill in with lots in between.” From the standpoint of a developer selling residential lots, lifestyle considerations are important. Homeowners enjoy looking out a window to see a great white egret alight at the edge of a blue pond. It slows their heart rates down a bit. St. Joe, in its planning, has allowed for hundreds of miles of trails with connections to the Gayle’s Trails system in Panama City Beach. The Latitude Margaritaville project is laced with walking and other trails. “We look at things holistically and plan for the long term,” McCloy said. To the extent that they succeed, birds and bees, magnolias and mankind, stand to benefit.

A GROWING COURT PRESENCE

Tennis pro Barry Webb excited by expanding programs Written By HANNAH BURKE

n his five years as the director of tennis for Watersound ® Club community, Barry Webb said he knows where he is supposed to be and is doing what he is meant to do. Webb, who previously oversaw tennis programs at country clubs in Alabama and Georgia, has more than 25 years of experience in the tennis industry and a lifelong passion for the sport. “I first picked up a racquet when I was around 5 years old,” Webb said. “That was the late ’70s, the era of John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Chris Evert and Tracy Austin, and tennis was really booming. My parents began playing mixed doubles with other couples and would basically give me a racquet and stick me at one of the end courts that had a backboard.” Today, dividing his time between the four courts at Shark’s Tooth and two at Watersound Beach Club, Webb leads private, semi-private and group lessons for adults in the morning and for juniors in the afternoon. He also oversees United States Tennis Association league events and runs practices and matches for the Northwest Florida Tennis Association. Unaffiliated with the USTA, NFTA

teams consist of club members from Bay, Walton and Okaloosa counties who compete in ladies and seniors doubles competitions. There are Watersound® Beach Club weekly tennis clinics for “all ages, from 8–80.” Webb is equipped to help players of all experience and skill levels up their game. The Club also has a pickleball court for enthusiasts of the sport played with a solid paddle and a plastic ball resembling a Wiffle Ball. “PIckleball is popular with the more mature players because your half of the court is maybe four or five steps one way and four or five steps the other,” Webb said. “And, from what I’ve seen, it’s much more social. You go out to play a tennis match and you’re locked in, focused and hydrating with water. When I see people playing pickleball, they’re more likely to have a cooler of beer and a much more laid-back approach. It’s a crowd you may not see if we just offered tennis.” Webb anticipates that pickleball leagues may develop with the arrival this year of eight new pickleball courts, along with eight new tennis courts planned for the Club’s Camp Creek amenity expansion. “I’m excited for the expansion because we’ve definitely seen a burst in membership for our tennis

programs,” says Webb. “It’s almost like when COVID-19 took off and things shut down, people were looking for things to do and specifically things to do outside. That’s when I noticed the uptick in pickleball, too, so I’m ready for the extra space our new facilities will allow.” The new courts will be made of Pro Clay, which differs from traditional Har-Tru clay in its sophisticated sub-structure. “One of the biggest benefits of these new courts is going to be their drainage system,” Webb said. “If you live here, you know all about those little thunderboomers that roll in, rain for 15 minutes and then clear up. Golfers can take shelter in the pro shop and immediately get back on the course like nothing happened. Har-Tru courts, on the other hand, take about an hour-and-a-half to dry out. Pro Clay is supposed to dry in about 30–45 minutes, so it’s going to be a much faster turnaround.” Webb said plans for the new courts include a stadium court, ideal for tournaments and exhibitions by current and former professional tour players. The addition of the pro shop will offer members new resources, gear and “solidify us as a hub for tennis and pickleball,” he says. “We’re going to gauge participation,” says Webb. “We’re not planning on doing anything new at this time, but we may expand programs if we find, say, that the three clinics we do a week needs to be five, or if we need to add a new pro to accommodate more junior afterschool programs.” Webb predicts that a centralized location will be convenient for everyone and further his mission to build relationships both with and between club Members. “I can’t wait for what’s to come at Watersound Club because people are inevitably going to connect more with like-minded people who like to play tennis or pickleball,” he says. “Those relationships continue growing off the court; you start going to dinner with these people and, before you know it, you’re taking trips together. “Seeing those relationships form, helping people improve and achieve success — I enjoy it so much, it doesn’t feel like work to me.”

BUILDING A FITNESS COMMUNITY Wellness director Amy Robison will emphasize inclusivity Written By STEVE BORNHOFT

A

my Robison is no stranger to high-end clubs. Over the 15 years in which she has worked in the fitness and wellness industry, she has led classes and helped people achieve goals in Key Largo, at the Ocean Reef Club and at the Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. At the Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa in Denver, she was employed as director of resort programming and events. But, as of April 2021, Robison traded craggy peaks for soft sands. She is now the director of wellness and outdoor pursuits for Watersound Club. In that role, she will develop and oversee the Club’s fitness programming and other activities at the collection of recreational amenities in development adjacent to Camp Creek ® Golf Course. Robison lists those amenities with the facility of a real estate agent running through the features of an elegant home. As she does so, the energy in her voice rises, equaling the exuberance of someone doing high knees across an exercise floor. “We’ll have a 12,000-square-foot, two-story wellness center!” she begins. “A 19-meter adult lap pool, an outdoor fitness lawn, a resort-style family pool with a lazy river and water slide, a basketball court, eight tennis courts, eight pickleball courts, a game room and a playground!” Robison became aware of Watersound Club after a woman with whom she had worked in Key Largo went to work for the company. “I followed her progress and when I saw the wellness position open here, I got the conversation started,” Robison said. Robison grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina, and attended Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management. She is a certified personal trainer, a certified group exercise instructor and a 300-hour registered yoga teacher. She is currently pursuing a

certification in “life breath,” which involves deep-breathing techniques designed to relieve stress and tension. “I was extremely excited for the opportunity to join the Club,” Robison enthused. “I am coming into an area that doesn’t have a lot of large wellness facilities. The facilities and programs that we are working to bring to Watersound Club are going to be phenomenal.” Robison says it is her mission is to create “something for everyone.” “The facilities are not just for fitness buffs who are naturally going to want to come,” she said. “I want to develop programs that encompass the mind/body experience and relate to everybody.” Plans call for the first floor of the wellness center to be devoted to two group exercise studios. One geared toward spinning and the other used as a mindful movement studio where yoga, mat, pilates, barre and dance classes can be held. “Upstairs, we’ll have a functional fitness training room that will be used by personal trainers and for group exercise classes — boot camp, HIIT (high intensity interval training) classes, TRX classes,” Robison explained. “We’ll

have cardio and strength machines and free weights. The full-service locker rooms each will have steam rooms, saunas and Vichy showers.” Robison anticipates that initially the wellness center will host about 25 classes per week. Plus, she plans to bring in specialists who will address topics including nutrition and meditation. What does the wellness expert do to maintain her own physical and mental fitness? Robison meditates, practices yoga and keeps a journal. She runs 15-20 miles a week, eats healthy, lifts weights three times weekly and enjoys the outdoors while taking her Australian shepherd, Lily, for walks. And, she loves the satisfaction that comes with meeting professional challenges. “Programming will be very important,” Robison said, looking forward to her transformational year ahead. “I want to create an active fitness community within our membership.” Plans call for these amenities that Robison is so enthusiastic about to begin opening to Members and their guests this summer. THE FRIENDLY SKIES OF WATERSOUND ® CLUB Meet the person who helps make hassle-free travel dreams become reality Q&A WITH JENNIE FREY, Watersound Club Membership Amenities Manager

58

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

◆ WATERSOUND LIFESTYLE

Jennie Frey is the membership amenities manager for Watersound Club, but what that really means is that she’s the person to talk to when you want to take the Club’s private aircraft — a Pilatus PC-12 NG — out for a spin. We sat down for a quick chat with Jennie to learn more about her and the private air charter program.

WATERSOUND CLUB’S Pilatus PC-12 NG private aircraft is ready to take to the skies for your next trip.

How did you join The St. Joe Company and Watersound Club? Have you always been involved in aviation? The St. Joe Company has always been a pillar of our community, and I’ve had my eyes on this company over the years. My background was actually in public health, but I wanted to start something fresh. I landed in aviation somewhat unexpectedly — I was working on getting my pilot’s license when I interviewed for a different position with Watersound Club. That was about the time St. Joe was getting ready to announce the new plane to our membership. So that opened up an interesting opportunity. It was something we could really just take and run with — and we’ve come a long way!

When does a member get in contact with you?

they’re visiting. Abaco Island seems to be popular lately, and I love hearing their stories about what they do on their trips. Many of them play golf at Abaco Club; they do some deep-sea fishing, diving or spearfishing; and really enjoy a lot of family time. Taking our plane from our home airport (ECP) makes the trip so convenient. We fly there directly, and you don’t have to deal with any crowds. You just walk on the plane at our private hangar and go on your own schedule. If you want to leave at 8, we leave at 8. If you like a later start, we can make that happen.

What do you think is the best reason to become a Watersound ® Club Member?

If it’s someone looking at Watersound Club as a prospective member, usually they’ll get routed to me so they can learn more about member access to the Pilatus PC-12 NG. If they’re already an established member and they want to book a flight, they usually reach out to me directly. Firsttime flyers always start with a phone call; once they’ve flown, they can start texting or emailing to find out if the plane is available for a trip. I take it from there and work out any logistics that need to be handled — there are a lot of moving parts to work out when planning a flight.

It’s the lifestyle, the experiences, the excitement in knowing that you have so many amazing amenities at your fingertips. When you belong to Watersound Club, everything is streamlined to be more convenient for you — even a day at the beach or a round of golf. And, of course, I am a little biased, but there’s the plane, right? That’s the golden egg that I think really seals the deal for members. I don’t know where else that a club like ours includes access to a private aircraft, and you just pay an hourly rate whenever you want to go somewhere. And that’s just part of what you get when you’re a Watersound® Club Member.

What’s one of the most fun-sounding trips you’ve arranged for a Club Member?

How do Club Members arrange travel on the Pilatus aircraft?

The Bahamas flights are always so exciting. Most of the time, our members traveling there go for several days, and it’s so much fun to hear what part of the islands that

It all starts with a conversation, really! Just reach out to me and tell me what you want to do, and then we just go from there. It’s really easy.

BIG ONE Dr. Guy Harvey leads alluring fishing trips

uy Harvey loves to paint. He’s also passionate about scuba diving. Fishing, though, could be his greatest love of all — except for his family, of course. Harvey is in the fishing Hall of Fame. His daughter Jessica, also a marine biologist, holds numerous fishing world records. This is undoubtedly a fishing family. In 2021, the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation (GHOF) organized several epic fishing expeditions, and the good news is — you’re invited to come along for the ride. PINAS BAY, PANAMA Known as one of the hottest fishing destinations on the planet — Guy has been there more than 50 times, the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Panama is prolific with blue and black marlin, tuna, dorado, sailfish, roosterfish and many more sportfish. It’s also home of several GHOF research projects aimed at protecting this amazing fishery. In September 2021, Guy and daughter Jessica hosted 25 anglers at Tropic Star Lodge (TSL) for fishing, camaraderie and marine research. As expected, the fishing was off the charts, and dozens of billfish were raised and reeled in. All of those fish were released safely, and some were tagged with satellite tags for

tracking (see GHRITracking.org). The fish-tracking concept has proven to be effective in protecting these majestic species because scientists can determine where they roam and then write regulations to restrict those areas from commercial fishing. Sometimes it’s a battle keeping commercial fleets from catching sportfish, but without the data collected by GHOF, the fight would be much harder. The September trip was so successful that the GHOF quickly planned another Panama trip for 2022, open for 25 more anglers on each trip. The expedition is scheduled for September 25–29. Space is limited, so if you’re interested, contact GHOF

as soon as possible (see contact information at the end of this article). The price is $9,800 per angler for five days of fishing, dining and hanging out with Guy and Jessica. The money raised from these expeditions helps fund the vital scientific research conducted by the GHOF. PUERTO QUETZAL,

GUATEMALA (Sailfish Capital of the World)

In 2002, the Guatemalan government implemented some of the world’s strictest fishing regulations. That’s a good thing for us fishermen. Marlin and sailfish used to be sold as food in local markets and exported to other countries. These days, any commerce of billfish is highly illegal in Guatemala and can result in massive fines and even jail time. In other words, it’s 100% catch and release for offshore anglers. What prompted the government to take such dramatic conservation action? Well, the leadership of the

sportfishing resorts in the country, such as Pacific Fins and Casa Vieja, took action. They explained the economics of fishing tourism to the government officials in these terms: Each one of the live blue marlins can inject hundreds of thousands of dollars into the economy via fishing tourism, whereas a dead blue marlin may only fetch a few hundred bucks at the fish market. It’s hard to refute that kind of logic. This is why fishing offshore in Guatemala is sort of like being in a giant aquarium surrounded by sailfish. They are swimming around everywhere along with billfish, dorado, tuna and their cousins. It’s not unusual to raise 40 sailfish in one day of fishing. If that makes your hands sweat and your heart race, you can come join Guy Harvey at the Pacific Fins Resort April 19–23, 2022, with 18 other anglers. The GHOF group will take over the entire resort for four days of amazing fishing and fun. Cost for this expedition is $5,300 per person and is all inclusive — fishing, food, adult beverages and

64

time spent with Guy. As with all of the GHOF expeditions, the money raised helps fund the vital scientific research conducted by the GHOF. ISLA MUJERES, MEXICO

(Whale Shark Extravaganza)

Each summer, hundreds of whale sharks come to Isla Mujeres to feed and breed. It’s a bit like clockwork because they return in massive numbers and lumber along peacefully offshore feeding on plankton. July and August are the peak months for the migration and set the stage for the GHOF to study these gentle giants of the sea. Over the past decade, the GHOF has tagged some of these behemoths (see GHRITracking. org) and discovered that they travel thousands of miles before returning to Isla Mujeres. Using this knowledge of their behavior, the GHOF is lobbying for greater protections of whale sharks around the world.

Don’t be mistaken however, this is NOT a fishing trip but simply a life-changing snorkeling adventure. There’s nothing quite like swimming next to a 40-foot-long fish that seems to be unconcerned with the tiny human trying to keep up. For the record, whale sharks are sharks but do not have flesh-ripping teeth like their white shark cousins. Whale sharks are filter feeders like humpback whales, and they eat tiny krill and plankton instead of big fish and people. The dates for this trip are July 31– August 2, and the cost is $3,250 per person, which includes everything — lodging, meals, drinks and three days cavorting with whale sharks. Guy and Jessica will be there along with a GHOF film crew on location filming for a future documentary. This expedition is limited to 20 people. Remember, the money raised from these expeditions funds the vital scientific research conducted by the GHOF.

For more details on these expeditions, contact Brian Rowland at browland@guyharvey.com.

tribute to the past now provides a memorable mid-round snack destination for Club Members. Near the 12th tee at Camp Creek Golf Course, you’ll find a restored 1958 Chevrolet Viking — a throwback to The St. Joe Paper Company’s fleet of work trucks of years past with one key update: It has a woodfired oven built into the chassis.

As golfers approach the 12th tee, the truck is impossible to miss. With smoke billowing out its chimney and positioned alongside a satellite bar, this comfort station provides a midround experience not found on any other golf course. When you visit the truck, you’ll be greeted by the smiling face of a member of Watersound Club culinary team tending to the fire or providing details on that day’s wood-fired treat. The daily offering is constantly evolving and always complimentary. On a recent day, it was an individual-sized flatbread pizza. Members and their guests can look forward to discovering what small bites will be awaiting them as they pull away from the 11th green. “One week, we had chicken pesto pizzas,” explained Food and Beverage Manager, Laurel Orgiefsky. The culinary team isn’t limited in what can be created with the unique piece of cooking equipment. “In November, we did a ‘fixings flatbread’ topped with Thanksgiving sides, and turkey sliders.” If there’s one thing to know about the menu, it’s that it is not definite, which is part of the fun. Who knows what the team will be firing up when you get to hole No. 12? Manny Belete, Camp Creek general manager, explained that the Club is always looking for ways to enhance the Member experience and create memories that simply can’t happen at other clubs. “We worked with a company that takes these old trucks and converts them into wood-fired ovens,” Manny said. “Most golf courses have a snack bar or small grill out on the course, but we always want to go one step further. To see the looks on our Members’ faces when they see it for the first time, and then learn that their hot snack is on the house, has been the best part.” The truck arrived in 2021, and Manny and his team spent some

The course’s 5th hole has another spot for golfers to fuel up. Much like the satellite bar at No. 12, the exterior of this comfort station is wrapped in reclaimed wood — another nod to the logging and timber past of the company and the area. This one is a grab-and-go station with refrigerated sodas and water, plus snacks like potato chips, popcorn and granola bars. Just like the food coming out of the wood-fired oven, these snacks are complimentary to Members and their guests. Manny and his team continue to look for ways to exceed Member expectations. “It’s the little details that people remember,” he says. “Whether that is being referred to by name when you arrive or being treated to unique food and beverage offerings on the golf course, this is how we deliver an unmatched experience and help Members make lasting memories with their families and friends.” THE DAILY offering is constantly evolving and always complimentary.

They did demos and practice runs to get feedback from Watersound Club members before moving the truck to its current location where it has been delighting golfers ever since. Since the oven operates at 800 degrees, it can typically crank out a small, fresh bite to eat in a minute or less so golfers can carry on with their round.

TIPS

A Routine for

BETTER PUTTING Consistency is key to lowering your score Written By BEN BLALOCK, PGA Master Professional and Watersound Club’s Director of Instruction

WATERSOUND LIFESTYLE

◆ SPRING/SUMMER 2022 69

TIPS

Approach every single putt in the same manner, every time you play.

T

he fastest way to improve your score on the course is to reduce the total number of putts used per hole played. While that’s obvious, the solution might not be as apparent. Regardless of the result, most of us move the putter functionally — it might not look like Ben Crenshaw, but it gets the ball rolling just the same. What we need to do is approach every single putt in the same manner, every time you play. The elements listed below belong in your putting game. If you don’t already do these, consider adding one or all of them to your routine.

DIRECTION The face is “king” By this, I mean that nothing matters more than the angle of the clubface as to the direction your putt will roll. The “shape” of your stroke doesn’t matter; you might even have a “loop” in your stroke, but if the face of the putter is pointed in the right direction when it runs into the ball, your putt WILL roll where you mean for it to. Never forget this fact. Use the line on your ball Most golf balls these days are printed with a line of some sort on the cover.

70

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

This is there to be used as an alignment aid, so use it. Before you putt, mark your ball with a coin, pick it up and replace it on the ground with the line aimed in the direction you’ve decided to play along based on your read of the green. Now stand up, and match the line on your putter to the line on your ball.

DISTANCE CONTROL

Practice strokes have a purpose, but there’s a method to it. Before you stroke your putt, step back from the ball just a bit and set up for a practice stroke. While making practice strokes, you need to focus your eyes either:

◆ WATERSOUND LIFESTYLE

• Beyond the hole, for an uphill putt. • Even with the hole, for a level putt. • Short of the hole, for a downhill putt. While keeping your eye on the selected location relative to the hole, make a series of continuous practice strokes. Just get the putter swinging back and forth without stopping its flow. Stay in motion until you feel confident that the amount of force you’re providing is appropriate. Never look down to the ball throughout this process, only at your selected point. Once you’ve got it, look down to the ball and: • P ut the putter head behind the ball, matching the line on the ball to the line on the putter. • R epeat the motion you made in your practice strokes, matching the size and the rhythm. If you will practice these steps on a regular basis and learn to trust the outcomes, your putting will improve over time.

ome people are just born hospitable. Hospitality is defined as “the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors or strangers.” If you have encountered Kyle Davis, there is no doubt you would say that he embodies that definition. Kyle began his career with The St. Joe Company eight years ago as the general manager of Fish Out of Water ®, WaterColor ® Inn & Resort’s most notable restaurant. His attention to detail, love of employees, guest-focused philosophy and affable personality have paved the way for his career to continue to blossom since then. “I guess I was born to serve folks,” says Davis. Even at the early age of 12, he was working behind the concession stand at little league baseball games in his hometown of New Port Richey, Florida. “I was always thrilled to be able to serve people. Even at 12, I didn’t look at filling soda cups, popping corn or handing over a hot dog as a job,” he says. It was a mission. Kyle attended the University of Central Florida where he earned his hospitality management degree at the Rosen College of

FOR KYLE DAVIS, general manager of Watersound Beach Club, working by the beach has its perks.

“

Hospitality Management. Even before graduating, he joined the Hilton corporation and was part of the opening team for the Orlando Hilton Hotel attached to the Orlando Convention Center. “It was there that I got my first opportunity to work in food and beverage,” says Davis. “That taught me just how important it is to create a positive guest experience.” After a few years, he landed a senior position at the Umstead Hotel and Spa, a five-star, five-diamond hotel in North Carolina. It was then that members of The St. Joe Company reached out to Davis and recruited him to join the team at WaterColor Inn & Resort as manager of Fish Out of Water. In the ensuing years, he advanced to Assistant Director of Food and Beverage, then Director of Lodging and Guest Experience before being promoted to General Manager of Watersound ® Inn and Watersound ® Beach Club in 2021. “This is a blending of everything I learned in hospitality school. In overseeing these properties, I get to interact with every department, which has been amazing. My leadership style is quite simple; I want to be informed about every detail. I am definitely a ‘hands-on’ manager,” says Davis. Apparently, the staff appreciates this about him as employees describe him as being empathetic, understanding and most of all, respectful. “The true test for me with our staff is to see them smiling and enjoying their contribution to the guest experience,” he says. The transition to WaterSound Inn and Watersound Beach Club was not your typical changing of roles. Davis started his new role at the beginning of 2020, and by March, COVID had become a household word. Watersound Beach Club closed for 45 days. However, during that period, leadership decided that the Club would offer its Members complimentary takeout meals twice a week. It was an overwhelming success and became something for Members and staff to look forward to each week. When the Beach Club reopened, it was with new health and safety regulations in place, and it was with many new Watersound Club Members. It seems

that as people realized that life must go on despite the pandemic, many opted to relocate so that they could spend more time living their life by the beach, and many of those already in the area began to look for new ways to enjoy quality time with family and friends. Where others might have been daunted by the task, Davis and his team at Watersound Club rose to meet the occasion. “We seized the opportunity to enhance our training program. Staff not only implemented the new safety protocols, but prepared to enhance the guest experience, making them feel incredibly good about their visit to the Club.” Davis’ strategy is to focus on that Member and guest experience. As he leaves each day, he takes a few minutes to reflect on the events that had unfolded. “If I know that even the most trying of circumstances was resolved to a Member or guest’s liking, I feel that we have done the job,” he says. “I realize that our Members have a choice in Club experiences. My job is to make sure that Watersound Club is the right choice.”

Davis and his wife, Summer, have three children. Their eldest son, Styles, is a junior at FSU, and their daughter, Madilyn, is in sixth grade at Emerald Coast Middle School. Their youngest son, Grady, is in the fifth grade and attends Dune Lakes Elementary.

For a World Series winner, Watersound feels like home Written By PRATT FARMER

B

SARAH & PAUL PHOTOGRAPHY

RAVES WIN! BRAVES WIN! BRAVES WIN! If you are an Atlanta Braves fan, those words were like music to your ears late last year when the Braves clinched the National League Championship Series and went on to become baseball’s world champions, defeating the Houston Astros. For Watersound ® Club Members Jeff and Jenna Mathis those words were the crescendo to Jeff’s baseball career after just joining the Braves in May 2021. Jeff is no stranger to Northwest Florida, as he played both football

and baseball at Marianna High School. While football was the sport he enjoyed more, he was drafted right out of high school to play baseball for the California Angels in Anaheim. In high school, Jeff played shortstop and pitcher, and in his senior year, his coach transitioned him to catcher. He showed great skills in a remarkably difficult position to play. “I had planned to attend Florida State University and play baseball there,” he says. However, the offer to go straight to professional ball was just too enticing. It was during his time with the Angels that Jeff met his wife, Jenna, during a series against the New York Yankees. “I met Jeff through a mutual friend while the Angels were in New York where I was living,” says Jenna. “We just seemed to hit it off right away.” When Jeff and Jenna decided to tie the knot, they chose the Chapel at Seaside as their wedding venue. “I had never been to 30A before coming down with Jeff, and having heard about the chapel, we went to see it. That’s all it took,” says Jenna. “As a matter of fact, when my dad spoke at our wedding, he was quick to tell Jeff that he had his best series when he met me.” Over the next few years, the couple would come to 30A every chance they got. In the ensuing years, Jeff played for the Rangers, Diamondbacks, Marlins and Blue Jays. It was his time with

the Blue Jays that ultimately brought him to the Braves. “Alex Anthopoulos was the general manager of the Blue Jays while I was there; we had a great relationship. In May of last year, Alex called and asked if I would come down to Atlanta, joining the taxi squad,” he says. Taxi squad is baseball parlance for five to six substitute players who shuffle between the major league team and its AAA affiliate depending on short-term needs. Jeff never went to the AAA team, Gwinnett Braves. Instead, he ended up as a catcher in the bullpen. “Playing in that role gave me an opportunity to really get to know the pitchers,” says Jeff. One teammate described Jeff as a player-coach because he not only took great interest in every pitcher, he also spent lots of time working out, attending pregame scouting meetings and never left the bullpen. That is, until he was called from his place out beyond the home run fence. After Braves’ starting catcher Travis d’Arnaud was placed on the 10-day injured list and then Alex Jackson, who replaced d’Arnaud was injured, Jeff got the call. Thanks to his experience and his continued work to stay ready to play, he was prepared. As one sportswriter said of Jeff, “It is not hyperbole to label the 38-year-old Mathis a defensive savant behind the plate.” The life of any professional athlete is challenging. For baseball players and their families, it’s especially trying. With 162 games each season, baseball players

“

We both love the laid-back beach lifestyle, so deciding on 30A as the place we wanted to live was easy. We would also be close to all of Jeff’s family, and that was important for both of us. — Jenna Mathis

spend many nights away from home. “When possible, Jenna would travel to the games, and even when the kids were pre-school aged, she would be able to make many of the trips,” says Jeff. However, as the kids got older, the couple began thinking more about schools and finding a community where they could put down roots. “Community was very important to both of us. I grew up in a small town where everybody knew just about everybody,” Jeff says. While the idea of living in Northwest Florida was new to her, Jenna says that she just knew in her heart of hearts that being in the area felt “right.” They settled on a house in the WaterSound ® Beach community. “It’s a slice of heaven to us,” says Jenna. When not at home, you will find the family at the beach or the Watersound Beach Club. “I love that we can walk just about

anywhere, and everyone is so gracious and friendly,” Jeff says. Jenna agrees. “Our kids just love being at the Club. If they aren’t in the lazy river floating along, then they are having an ice cream. It’s just fabulous that we have so much at our fingertips,” she says. When Jeff isn’t at the Club, you will most likely find him on one of the two Watersound Club golf courses or hunting. With an 8 handicap, Jeff says that he is partial to Camp Creek Golf Course. “I love the course, and I suppose it’s a favorite because I keep trying to ‘best’ the ninth hole. That hole always gets me with the marshes and bunkers. I really like Shark’s Tooth Golf Course as well, but with Camp Creek so close to the house, I can be there and on the course in a matter of minutes,” Jeff explains.

All of his life Jeff has been an avid outdoorsman. “We began hunting at an early age. Reminiscing about those times in a field or sitting in a deer stand with my dad and brother are priceless to me,” he says. At least once a year they still take a weeklong hunting trip. “I love to hunt for whitetail, but honestly, anything that gets me outdoors, I am game for,” he says. Now that their oldest daughter is attending a nearby school, Jenna and the girls are traveling less and less with Jeff. “Part of putting down roots was being able to stay put, become active in our children’s school years and just catch our breath a bit,” Jenna says. “We loved being on the road with Jeff some of the time. But honestly, with the beach at our doorstep and the Club just a short walk away, it’s really hard to get us to think about anything else.” When asked about the World Series, Jeff says that he was truly blessed to be given the opportunity to join the Braves. “They had many choices, and they chose me. I am humbled and flattered by that,” he says. Asked what’s next for him, Jeff says he is leaving his options open. “Whether I continue to play or consider a coaching opportunity is yet to be decided,” he says. It is important to note that Jeff played 17 major league baseball seasons, a huge accomplishment by any measure. As for Jenna and the girls, you will most definitely find them at Beach Club or building sandcastles in the sugary white sand. That’s a grand slam!
