The Importance of an Exercise Routine for All Ages Finding a way to become and stay active is crucial not just for the elderly but also for children By Rebecca Padgett
I
t is widely known that people from the ages of 18 to 55 should be engaging in some form of fitness. For the outlying age ranges, physical fitness is not as readily addressed, yet it is just as necessary that children and senior citizens develop health routines. Fitness for kids and seniors might differ in impact, intensity and length, but the physical and mental benefits are no less important. Being stagnant is never the optimal choice for any age group; whether the movements are large or small, it’s key to keep moving or get moving. With a surge in technology, more children than ever are exposed to screen time and less physical activity. It may seem as if children don’t need as much physical activity as an adult, but that’s a false assumption as properly instilled health habits can make a lasting impact throughout life. “Just like adults, kids need an outlet as well, and exercise is one of best ways for kids to decompress,” said Melissa Johnson, owner of Kaos Group Training. “If physical activity can be taught to be a part of one’s life from a young age then, hopefully, as they get older they will continue to use exercise to relieve stress, stay strong and healthy and lead a positive lifestyle.” Irene Quevedo, director of operations at
American Fitness, agrees on the importance of beginning fitness routines early on, stating that kids learn a great deal from the habits and activities of their families. Parents are vital in encouraging and promoting fitness activities for their children. Kaos Group Training, American Fitness and many fitness facilities throughout Tallahassee provide classes for families, teens and children. A noticeable difference between child and adult fitness is that, for a child, the activity needs to be engaging — otherwise they may not show interest and may not understand its influence on their life. “We need to make physical activity fun,” said Quevedo. “Exposing kids and teens to different sports and activities will keep them active and allow them to have a say in which one they prefer. By becoming physically active in an activity they enjoy, kids and teens can reduce the risk of stress, depression and anxiety.” Through workouts, all ages can gain strength, improve cardiovascular health, improve balance and contribute to overall physicality. Those same physical activities are mentally beneficial by elevating endorphins, ultimately boosting happiness and decreasing signs of stress and depression. “No matter what age or what capabilities someone has, they deserve to enjoy a high

quality of life,” said Kim Bibeau, owner of Sweat Therapy Fitness. “As we live longer it is absolutely imperative that we remain active to ensure we have a high quality of life. Research proves that exercise does this time and time again, because the physical and emotional benefits of an active lifestyle are undisputed. It helps with attitudes, depression and cognitive sleep. People feel better, and they are happier.” Sweat Therapy Fitness offers a variety of senior adult fitness classes including: Forever Fit, a total body workout focusing on strength, core and cardiovascular activities; Boxing Balance and Core, which includes a boxing component to assist with strength, cardio and cognition; and Rock Steady Boxing, a course designed specifically for those with Parkinson’s Disease. Premier Health & Fitness Center hosts a Brain, Body, Balance class focusing on fall prevention by addressing skills that decline with aging and contribute to injuries from falling.

Research shows that honing in on strength, balance, reflexes, aerobic activity and cognition can reduce the rates of Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. Alongside the physical benefits, it’s a way to make connections and engage socially. “We have a lot of power over how we age,” said Kathy Gilbert, fitness instructor at Premier Health & Fitness Center. “Our physical and cognitive health is significantly affected by our level of physical activity. Keeping active and maintaining your strength slows down the declines that occur with aging. “I see many 90-plus-year-olds leading happy, fulfilling, independent lives, and these are the people who have stayed active their whole lives,” she adds. “We need to encourage our aging parents, friends and neighbors to stay active.” The research is undisputed, the benefits are vast and the resources are growing, proving it’s never too early or too late to engage in a fitness routine that benefits mind, body and soul. •

Advice for the Battered Soles Experts caution you not to run from your foot problem By Marina Brown
H
umans and their feet, it seems, have a complex relationship. Looking down on those far-off extremities, our sentiment ranges from fetish to scorn to shrug. And yet, the human foot again and again rises up to assert itself as something more than just a beast of burden. It is vital to our enjoyment of life. Feet take a beating. The effects of obesity and sedentary lifestyles, plus modern foot coverings — shoes — often not only fail to protect the foot but instead abuse the little darlings. And trouble can start early.

Dr. George Merritt of Tallahassee Podiatry Associates said children frequently show an unnatural degree of pronation, an inward roll of the foot, and supination, an outward roll of the foot. He said such conditions can lead to gait problems and, later, orthopedic issues. Merritt, a runner, emphasizes the importance of wearing the right shoes, which he says provide protection from “stepping out of bed in the morning, until getting in at night.” So what are the right shoes? We asked Tyler Perkins, owner of Fleet Feet, a Tallahassee store that focuses on the perfect shoe for people who will cover
hundreds of miles on foot or simply seek a comfortable, supportive shoe. The most common footwear mistake is to wear a shoe that is too small, he says. “People don’t understand that the foot will continue to grow and change over time,” he said. “What they wore at 25 is not what they should wear at 50.” Athletic shoes should be worn at least a full size larger than the barefoot measurement, he says. He says another tendency is to wear athletic shoes for too long. “Even a quality running or walking shoe

worn regularly is only going to hold up for six months,” he said. “Beyond that, the cushioning system breaks down and won’t absorb the impact to the feet.” What if you’re not a runner? What if you’re a fashionable woman-about-town, and you have fabulous legs and want to show them off, right down to the tips of your toes? You might want to stay in the stilettos. But not so fast. “All things in moderation,” said Dr. Russell Rowan of Tallahassee Podiatry Associates. “Wear high heels but not all the time. Too long can lead to shortened Achilles tendons and pain on the balls of the feet.” Hammer toes, in which toes bend downward, and bunions aggravated by ill-fitting shoes can be corrected by surgery or prevented via better-fitted shoes with lower heels. Nail funguses, most frequently found in
the hot, moist environment of an enclosed shoe, can also develop between an acrylic nail and the nail itself. The same fungi that cause athlete’s foot can grow beneath your artificial toenails. Careful foot cleansing and change of shoes is important prevention. April Woodward of Millennium Nail & Day Spa says the most common issues she hears from her pedicure customers involve a desire for smoother skin on their heels and problems with ingrown toenails. “With soaking and proper trimming, we can address both of these,” she said. Woodward says that regular foot care, such as getting a pedicure, isn’t just for vanity’s sake. “The combination of soaking in warm water, massage and grooming of the toenails helps to maintain healthy feet,” she said. So take a stand, put your best foot forward and treat those tootsies right. •

Dr. Chris DeRosier is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery, American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery and brings unique expertise to the region in the areas of free tissue breast reconstruction know as Free TRAM and DIEP flaps. He also brings muchneeded expertise in abdominal wall reconstruction and wound care to this region. “Patients are my number one priority,” said Dr. Ben Kirbo, board-certified plastic surgeon. “They influence the quality of staff and technology, the design of our office and the time we spend to educate our patients about the procedures and services they are considering.” Dr. Ben Kirbo has been practicing in the North Florida and South Georgia area for more than 17 years. He is dedicated to providing unparalleled quality to every patient. A native of Bainbridge, Georgia, Dr. Kirbo received his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia and completed his medical degree at the University of Miami. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Kentucky and his plastic surgery residency at Vanderbilt University where he trained under several internationally recognized plastic surgeons. He has a particular interest in facial cosmetic surgery, breast surgery and body contouring. Additionally, he has interest and experience in post-bariatric weight loss surgery. He has extensive training in melanoma/skin cancer treatment and Mohs repairs. Dr. Kirbo is known by his colleagues for his expertise in correcting undesirable plastic surgery results. Along with Southeastern Plastic Surgery, he was selected as the only local surgical practice to participate in the Florida Melanoma Study.
“At Southeastern Plastic Surgery, we strive to deliver excellent patient care, in a warm, compassionate setting,” said Dr. Laurence Rosenberg, board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Laurence Rosenberg grew up in Albany, New York, and attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, for both college and medical school, where he earned many awards and distinctions. Board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, he completed both general surgery and plastic surgery residency and trained at the University of Alabama under pioneering plastic surgeon, Dr. Luis Vasconez. As a result of his training and research, he is an editorial board member of the Annals of Plastic Surgery. With a variety of interests and areas of specialization within cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Rosenberg’s areas of focus include facelifts, eyelid surgery, breast reconstruction, breast augmentation and reduction, abdominoplasty, hand surgery, laser treatments of skin disorders and body contouring with particular interest in massive weight loss patients. Dr. Rosenberg is the only board-certified physician in North Florida and South Georgia to perform a unique hair restoration procedure of surgically transplanting individual hair follicular units.
Recognized nationally, Dr. DeRosier offers his expertise during multiple grand rounds and lectures to many medical centers throughout the United States. He has provided leadership to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and the medical community by serving as Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Medical Director of the Skin and Soft Tissue Center and was most recently elected to the Medical Executive Committee. A native of Huntsville, Alabama, Dr. DeRosier is an AOA graduate of the University of Alabama (UAB) School of Medicine. He completed both his general and plastic surgery residencies at UAB prior to starting his practice at the university. In 2013 Dr. DeRosier joined Southeastern Plastic Surgery bringing academic level reconstructive surgery to the Big Bend area.
