Every year the Board of Trustees and school community thanks and bids farewell to several dedicated volunteers who have worked hard for many years on behalf of the school. This year we would like to give special thanks to three trustees who have been exceptional in their service.
Amy Baker served on many committees during her two terms on the Board, including education, development, and leadership as well as the committee helping build the Steiner Campus. She chaired the 2014 Golf Tournament and helped secure many valuable, one-of-a-kind items for the past three school auctions. Amy is a great supporter of the school and worked hard and successfully to recruit new families from Park City.
Melissa Orford served as the Home and School Association representative for the Lincoln Campus for the past three years. She was an active contributor to the education committee and an important voice for a wide range of parent views and concerns. Melissa served as the auction coordinator for the past two auctions, working hard to make it a successful fundraising event for the school. She also played an active role on the Rowmark committee and the strategic planning committee.
Ira Rubinfeld served nine years on the Board. He was the legal chair for two years, the Annual Fund chair for two years, and most recently, he served as the education chair for two years. Ira worked on both the Steiner Campus construction committee and the steering committee for the Steiner Campus, and played a vital role in the first phase of construction for the future campus.

Akemi Takei Louchheim
Akemi was born and raised in Los Angeles. She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California at Berkeley, a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Northwestern University, and a second master’s in sports administration from Seattle Pacific University. Some highlights of Akemi’s 20-year sports broadcasting career include coverage of the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, the Major League Baseball playoffs, and the Final Four. Akemi was most recently the radio sideline reporter for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and a sports anchor and reporter for the NBC affiliate in Seattle. She can also be heard as the sideline reporter on the XBOX’s NBA Jam games.
Akemi previously served a three-year term on Rowland Hall’s Board as the McCarthey Home and School Association representative. She chaired several important trustee committees, including the strategic planning committee and the Rowmark committee. Akemi also served on the boards of the YWCA of Seattle and of her children’s preschool in Seattle. She and her husband, David, moved to Park City in 2008 with their two children. Carter will be in eighth grade and Arden in fifth grade at Rowland Hall this fall.

Sarah is president and CEO of ENVE Composites, one of the fastest growing companies in Utah. ENVE is on the forefront of both the emerging outdoor manufacturing and the composite sectors. ENVE Composites is a three-time honoree of Inc. 5000’s Fastest Growing Private Companies in America, tenth on the Utah 100, and has received multiple awards for their design and manufacturing innovations. In 2014, Sarah was named CEO of the Year by Utah Business Magazine and Entrepreneur of the Year by Earnest and Young. Sarah holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and has over 15 years of sales, marketing, and operational experience. Prior to ENVE, Sarah held various marketing and sales positions at Fortune 500 companies, including serving as team leader for the $1 billion product Zyrtec at Pfizer. Sarah is a Wisconsin native, and she enjoys hiking and biking with her husband and children. She and her husband, Paul, have three Rowland Hall students: Tyler, second grade; Will, fifth grade, and Samantha, sixth grade.

Theresa Sueoka
Theresa, a Utah native, graduated from the University of Utah with a B.S. in speech communication and a J.D. from the S.J. Quinney College of Law. After law school, Theresa spent 13 years in Menlo Park, CA, and began her career working with two nonprofit community-based mediation programs. Later, she worked with various small law firms and two start-up technology companies, helping them set up and maintain patent and trademark group practices.
As part of the Rowland Hall community, Theresa has helped in many capacities and has held several volunteer positions. While her sons were in the beginning and lower schools, Theresa enjoyed the opportunities to volunteer in the classroom. She has been a classroom and grade representative, chaired the Book Fair, and served on the McCarthy Campus Home and School executive committee as president in 2008-2009. Additionally, Theresa worked on auction solicitations, class projects, catalog, and Treasure Club committees. Most recently, she has served as an Annual Fund liaison and continues to help with new family outreach and the Parent Admission Network (PAN).
Outside of Rowland Hall, Theresa is an active volunteer within the Salt Lake Japanese-American community and also enjoys the art of Ikebana (flower arranging). She studied 13 years under a master artist while living in the Bay Area. Over the years she has taught workshops for the Lifelong Learning Program through the University of Utah and participated in several Ikebana exhibitions. She and her husband, Greg, are parents of two Rowland Hall students. Josef is starting ninth grade, and Maxwell, eleventh grade.

Jij de Jesus, Lower School Principal
Jij (pronounced “Jay”) comes to Rowland Hall from Town School for Boys in San Francisco, where he held a number of leadership positions, most notably as director of the Exploration of New Ideas program (STEM and innovation) and fourth grade teacher. He also oversaw a faculty evaluation research and revision project, serving as a teacher-leader on the committee on teaching and learning, and as the leader of the school’s Green Team. Jij began his career in experiential education by leading wilderness trips. He has a B.A. from Northwestern University in environmental science and an M.Ed. in private school leadership from the University of Hawaii.
Jij impressed those he met at Rowland Hall with his depth of knowledge, ability to connect with others, and intelligence, humility, and vision. Jij said he “fell in love” with the school on his first visit. He continued, “Knowing that I would be looking for a leadership position at the beginning of this school year, I approached the process not as a job search, but as a community search. In Rowland Hall, I found the perfect community for me, a school characterized by support, kindness, and a dedication to continuous and joyful learning.”
Dave Samson, Upper School Assistant Principal
Dave comes to us after 11 years at Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, where he served as the house head director (a position equivalent to the assistant principal of the Upper School) and as the school counselor. He holds a B.A. from Connecticut College and an M.A. in counseling from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The committee reviewed over 40 résumés, interviewed seven semifinalists by phone, and hosted four finalists on campus. Those who met with Dave describe him as open, easy-going, experienced, a good listener with a great sense of humor, thoughtful, and compassionate. His current head of school gave him a sparkling recommendation, describing Dave as “a key member of the leadership team” at Germantown Academy.
We look forward to welcoming Dave and his wife Kate. At press time we learned that Kate is the new Middle School Emotional Support Counselor replacing Amanda Wissler (See page 19). They have a 16-month-old daughter, Beatrice.

Coral Azarian, Director of Financial Aid and Associate Director of College Counseling
Coral Azarian joined the Rowland Hall community as director of financial aid and associate director of college counseling on July 1. In 2011, Coral served as the Rowland Hall development associate for one year while she prepared for graduate school. In her cover letter she shared her thoughts about her time at Rowland Hall: “I knew that I had found a wonderful school that was not only characterized by the intelligent and caring students who attended, but also by the faculty and staff whose true focus was on the holistic development of each and every child.”
Coral comes to Rowland Hall with expertise in advising and counseling in the areas of college admissions, student leadership, and the transition to college. She has served as an admissions counselor at Providence College in Rhode Island and Stonehill College in Massachusetts, and most recently as the coordinator for student leadership, involvement, and orientation at Westminster College—an area of work that fits with her master of education in educational leadership and policy from the University of Utah.
According to Richard Badenhausen, chair of Rowland Hall’s Board of Trustees and director of the Honors Program at Westminster College, Coral is “a great fit for our community because she has experienced success at previous institutions that value academic excellence in an environment of support and encouragement. Rowland Hall’s special culture is its most valuable asset, and Coral understands and appreciates how to help our students thrive within this setting.”
School Nurse Chaleh Thirkill
We are pleased to introduce our new school nurse, Chaleh Thirkill. She is a graduate of Westminster College, where she earned a bachelor of science in nursing along with a minor in Spanish. Chaleh has worked in pediatric health care for 16 years, most recently, at Primary Children’s Medical Center as a registered nurse. She has also worked at Los Angeles Children’s Hospital and Randall Children’s Clinic in Portland, Oregon. Along with working in pediatrics, Chaleh is also a certified diabetes educator. We look forward to having Chaleh take care of Rowland Hall’s children and adults, alike.

Michelle Rasich Assumes Directorship of College Counseling
Following Bruce Hunter’s departure for a new position in Florida, we are thrilled to announce that Rowland Hall will not miss a beat as former Associate Director of College Counseling and Finanical Aid, Michelle Rasich, assumes the directorship. Michelle is entering her sixth year at Rowland Hall, having arrived here in 2010 following nine years at Juan Diego Catholic High School in Draper, Utah, where she was the junior class counselor, testing coordinator, and the AP coordinator. Prior to joining Juan Diego in 2001, she worked in Claremont, California as the associate dean of students at Scripps College, and as the assistant dean of students/dean of residential life at Harvey Mudd College.
Michelle received her Bachelor’s Degree from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and graduated from the University of Utah College of Law. She is a member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, the Rocky Mountain Association for College Admission Counseling, and the Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools. She currently serves as the Immediate Past President of the Rocky Mountain Association for College Admission Counseling. In this role, Michelle was a member of a lobbying team that traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet with members of Congress and advocate for access and equity in higher education. Nationally, within college counseling professional organizations, Michelle is a leader and instructor on the topic of counselor letters of recommendation.
Middle School Academic Dean, Annie Barton
For the past two years, Annie Barton, Rowland Hall Class of 2004, has served as our primary supervisor of academic support in the Middle School. Starting July 1, her new title became Middle School academic dean. With Mary Jo Marker’s return to full-time teaching in 2013 (she was the MS dean of students from 2009-2013), Principal Tyler Fonarow was able to combine the duties and responsibilities of the former MS dean of students role and the position of academic support counselor into the new position. While Annie’s primary role is supporting all students with their academic progress, she will take on the additional responsibility of oversight of the development of the Middle School academic program. Tyler will remain the supervisor of faculty and point person on all disciplinary matters, and Annie will be the primary contact for students and families with questions about our curriculum and instruction.
Annie’s undergraduate degree is in classical studies from Bates College and her Master of Education degree is from the University of Colorado. Upon graduation, Annie joined Teach for America and taught middle school English in Denver. She was most recently an assistant principal of a charter school in Denver.

Director of Ethical Education, Ryan Hoglund
Building on Rowland Hall’s history of dedication to ethical learning and the programs fostered by Liz Paige, former director of service learning, Ryan Hoglund became the school’s first director of ethical education as of July 1. According to the hiring committee, “Ryan brings a vision and determination to the position that is both thoughtful and passionate. His commitment to involve students, faculty, and staff in all four divisions is impressive and based in experience.”
Ryan has been a positive influence as assistant principal in the Upper School for 15 years, and he served for many of those years on the school’s diversity and ethics committees. During Ryan’s decade-and-a-half at Rowland Hall, he has also served as the academic support counselor. He began his career here as the director of debate and as a teacher of political science, health, and world religions. Ryan was already one to whom teachers came for advice as they examined incorporating ethics and service into their classrooms and looked for ways to tackle diversity or sustainability. Ryan’s volunteer work for causes of inclusion in the larger Salt Lake City community will also benefit the school in his new role.
Ryan’s new charter is to enhance our ethical education program, which includes ethics, community engagement, diversity, sustainability, and global understanding. Ryan is married to alumnae Libby Mitchell ‘92. Their daughter, Meg, is in first grade at Rowland Hall.

Laura Kiechle took over the duties of administrative assistant in the Beginning School toward the end of the 2014-2015 school year. Laura is an alum of the Class of 2005, and is eager to rejoin the Rowland Hall community. She received her bachelor of arts from Sarah Lawrence College in New York, majoring in literature and Spanish. Most recently she established a successful career in the world of fashion styling in Los Angeles. Laura returned to SLC seeking a new career direction and in that process rediscovered the rewards of working with young children while substituting here. Laura has experience in customer service and creating successful organizational systems in several past employment settings.
Gita Varner, graduate of the Class of 2005, returned this summer to Rowland Hall in the role of database and office manager for the Advancement Office. After earning her degree at Gustavus Adolphus College in religion, Gita worked as a warehouse manager and as a fundraiser and database manager for a community choral group in Minnesota for the past five years. Gita is glad to be back at home and working for her alma mater. From her high school days, Coach Kathy Howa remembers Gita this way: “She worked for us in the athletic department, and we referred to her as Radar O’Reilly from the TV show M*A*S*H. She knew what needed to be done before we ever needed it done. Gita has an amazing work ethic and was the last one to leave at night, making sure nothing was left undone.” Welcome, Gita!

FONd FAREWELL TO RETiRiNG ANd REsiGNiNG FRiENds
Deborah Mohrman retired this June after 15 years at Rowland Hall. Her contributions to the school were both tangible and immeasurable. She hired talented new people to join our already outstanding faculty and staff, creating a learning environment that brought students literally running and bouncing into class every morning. She enriched our Lower School curriculum, significantly enhancing the math program and increasing students’ standardized test scores across the board. She approached her job with passion and commitment, ensuring that each child received a well-rounded education, focusing not just on their academic experience but social and developmental progress as well. Deborah made all of us— students, parents, faculty, and staff—feel part of an exceptional community.
“In my 13 years as a classroom teacher and 28 years as an administrator I have learned a great deal from the many children and colleagues I have encountered along the way,” Deborah wrote in her retirement letter. “I have loved being part of this community and have been very fortunate to work with highly committed and passionate colleagues.”
Deborah dedicated 41 years of her life to education as a teacher and administrator at five different schools. She first joined Rowland Hall in 2000 as the Lower School assistant principal and then became the principal in the fall of 2002, just before our Beginning School and Lower School moved to the McCarthey Campus.
Head of School Alan Sparrow characterized Deborah’s leadership and vision as “distinguished,” adding, “I know I speak for everyone at Rowland Hall when I say, ‘We will miss her dearly.’”

As many of you know, after 17 years at Rowland Hall as director of college counseling, Bruce Hunter departed to assume the role of interim director of college counseling at Ransom Everglades School in Florida.
Rowland Hall is deeply appreciative of Bruce’s significant professional and personal contributions. He passionately and artfully helped students navigate the challenges of finding the next “landing place” in their educational journeys. The world of college counseling has changed dramatically over the past two decades as competition has increased, and the pressures on high school seniors have mounted in the face of ever more daunting odds. Through it all, Bruce lived our shared mission to seek the best match for our seniors—a college at which they will feel challenged and affirmed. We wish him all the best in his new endeavors.
After 20 years as our business manager and CFO, Kevin Hanson left Rowland Hall to embark on a new journey, accepting the position of CFO at the Children’s School in Atlanta, Georgia. He accomplished a great deal during his tenure at Rowland Hall, significantly improving the school’s financial position and overseeing the budgeting process that took the school from an average faculty salary of 80 percent to 100 percent of the Salt Lake City pay scale. Kevin was responsible in large part for securing the $20 million bond that enabled us to complete the McCarthey Campus, early and under budget. Most recently, he handled the financial oversight of the building of the new soccer fields. Everyone will miss Kevin’s stable and calm demeanor, and his solid work ethic. His friendship, wit, and improbable sense of humor are irreplaceable. We wish him the very best in Atlanta.
Nurse Shirley Stevens retired last spring after serving as our school nurse for 21 years. Shirley gave daily, compassionate care to students, teachers, staff, and parents. She also oversaw our emergency preparation plans, was a strong advocate for school nursing, and served as president in the Utah School Nurse’s Association. Shirley dedicated her personal time advocating for best school nursing practices at the Utah Legislature. Nurse Shirley touched the lives of students, families, and colleagues in many positive ways. It is with gratitude and appreciation we thank her for all she’s done for the Rowland Hall community.

Middle School Counselor Amanda Wissler has decided to return to her roots in the clinical setting and began working for the University of Utah this summer. Amanda joined Rowland Hall 12 years ago and was an anchor in the Rowland Hall Middle School community for students, parents, faculty, staff, and administrators. She spent much of her professional career with us, ensuring that our students navigate their middle school years with perspective for themselves and empathy for others on their way to being socially and emotionally prepared for high school. During her time at Rowland Hall, Amanda advocated for and developed a robust health curriculum as well as a meaningful advisory program (within a variety of schedule iterations—no small feat!); established a parent education series that helped families partner at home regarding issues such as social media, drugs and alcohol, and bullying; and most recently, Amanda guided our student council in their leadership of this year’s Say Less 2B More campaign. On top of all that are the positive differences Amanda made for our individual students. Her work with students, whether simple check-ins or major moments of crisis management, will not soon be forgotten by these students or our school.
Marilyn Osborne retired in May 2015 after teaching at Rowland Hall for 26 of the 33 years she has been an educator. She taught kindergarten, first, and fourth grades on the Avenues Campus, and second and fourth grades on the McCarthey Campus. In addition, Marilyn served on numerous school committees and mentored many new teachers. A master teacher who possessed a keen insight for the ways children learn, both life lessons and academics, Marilyn’s desire to be an advocate for children drove her teaching and her relationships with them. Marilyn always brought enthusiasm, humor, expertise, wisdom, and passion to her teaching and her work with colleagues. We thank Marilyn for all she has done for Rowland Hall and for the many students, families, and colleagues whose lives she has touched. Marilyn will be greatly missed.
Amy Homer came to work for Rowland Hall as the director of transportation and assistant to Director of Operations Ann Burnett eight years ago. We will miss Amy’s efficient organizational skills and strength in dealing with the many transportation-related issues.
Josh Leger will move within the operations department to become the new director of transportation as well as Director of Operations Ann Burnett’s administrative assistant. Josh has worked extensively within the department on both campuses over the past eight years. Last year he was trained as a driver, obtaining his commercial drivers license, and he finished the year off helping out on one of the routes. He has done a bit of everything very successfully within the department and we are very excited that he accepted the challenge of putting on yet another hat.

Lisa Williams has been a devoted and much-loved Beginning School teacher since 2002. Lisa captured the hearts of children and parents while working first as an assistant teacher and then as the co-lead teacher of our Enrichment Program. She supported students, parents, and colleagues with her genuine caring and nurturing spirit. We will miss her contagious smile and great sense of humor. Lisa plans to continue as a substitute teacher with us, so this is not a last goodbye, but more of a “see you around.”
Aaron Hinton departed Rowland Hall to attend law school. When he came to Rowland Hall eight years ago, Aaron immediately became a valuable part of the eighth grade team. He coordinated and integrated a meaningful service-learning component to his curriculum with Defeat the Street for Homeless Youth in conjunction with the Utah Youth Resource Center. Students spent time researching this relevant social issue, volunteered with the center, created advocacy initiatives, and spent a night on the back lawn to gain an appreciation for sleeping outdoors in the urban environment. Aaron also dedicated his time and energy to develop the programming for the eighth grade Washington, D.C., trip. He integrated the experience into his American studies curriculum and helped coordinate the culminating photo exhibit at the 15th Street Gallery. Aaron coached the Upper School boys’ basketball team for eight years, and he led the program as head coach for the last three. We wish Aaron the very best as he embarks on a new career.
We bid farewell to Steve Mond, Upper School math teacher. After six years, he decided to pursue new adventures. While at Rowland Hall, Steve taught a variety of courses, including the ninth and tenth grade honors courses, and personal finance. Steve developed the first Rowland Hall AP Economics class two years ago. We will all fondly remember his incredible Quiz Bowl tournament for the Upper School Battle of the Classes, another activity he introduced to the school, as well as his star turn as the Grinch this past holiday season.
Rebecca Gibson, the Beginning School administrative assistant, left this June to pursue a graduate degree. Rebecca was a dedicated assistant with a warm, caring, and positive energy. She participated fully in the life of the Beginning School and generously volunteered to support the auction, the Dinner and Dialogue events, and Home and School teacher appreciation dinners.

Congratulations to Isabel Torres, Class of 2015, on receiving a $10,000 scholarship from the Comcast Foundation’s Leaders and Achievers program. In addition to this special award, Isabel was one of 36 students to receive a one-time, $1,000 scholarship, and all of the scholars were honored at a ceremony in the Utah State Capitol rotunda.
The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program was launched nationally in 2001, and Comcast has awarded nearly $22.8 million in scholarships to help nearly 23,000 high school students in the country pursue their higher education goals.
According to Merlin Jensen, area vice president of operations for Comcast, “These students are our future leaders, and we are excited to award them scholarships.”

Ling Ritter
CONGRATULATiONs, PREsidENTiAL sCHOLAR
Rowland Hall senior Natalya “Ling” Ritter was named a 2015 U.S. Presidential Scholar, one of 141 American high school seniors who have demonstrated “outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service, and contribution to school and community.” The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, appointed by President Obama, selects one young man and one young woman from each state each year. The scholars were honored for their accomplishments in Washington D.C., in June.
“What an honor it was to stand shoulder to shoulder with Ling’s parents and grandparents and watch her take her place among the other 141 Presidential Scholars. Our entire Rowland Hall community would have been as proud as I was,” Upper School French teacher Doug Wortham said. Mr. Wortham is the faculty member who nominated Ling for the recognition and attended the celebration of the scholars in June.
Of the three million students expected to graduate from high school this year, more than 4,300 candidates qualified for the 2015 awards determined by outstanding performance on the College Board SAT and ACT exams, and through nominations made by chief state school officers or the

BELATEd CONGRATs TO sPANisH TEACHER ABBY BACON
Congratulations to Lower School Spanish teacher Abby Bacon on receiving the Pat Buckner Award from the Utah Foreign Language Association last April. As the honoree, Señora Abby received a $1,000 award to help defray the expenses of traveling to Spain to further her expertise in the language and culture she teaches to Rowland Hall students.
In her proposal for the award, Abby wrote: “I am a Spanish teacher at Rowland Hall Lower School, where I teach a FLES (foreign language in the elementary schools) curriculum. The program that we offer in the Lower School provides a meaningful and valuable entry point into the journey of language learning for elementary students. Our program is standards-based and proficiency oriented. Because my students see me twice weekly for 45 minutes each session, it is all the more important to their class experience that I incorporate authentic materials (realia) and create opportunities for them to practice their skills with speakers outside of my classroom’s walls.
“While in Madrid, I will not only experience the culture of Spain, but I will also meet and collaborate with a local teacher—Esther Hill, who teaches fifth grade English to Spanish elementary students at Colegio Público las Veredas— with the goal of developing curriculum, designing real-world tasks, and gathering authentic resources for my students. Ms. Hill and I have been coordinating a pen pal project in which our students write letters to each other and explore each other’s cultures, interests, and languages.”
We look forward to hearing more from Abby about her experience in Spain and future collaborative efforts.

Rowland Hall is built on a long-standing history of philanthropy, and we are fortunate that so many families make exceptional education a priority in their homes and in their giving. The Rowland Hall community responded enthusiastically this year when asked for support. The Annual Fund saw the highest rate of parent participation in over a decade, a great indicator of belief in the school.
This year’s auction, Le Cirque Gala, was the most successful one we have had in years, not to mention a fabulous party! In December, Rowmark supporters came together on the slopes for the first-ever Rowmark Invitational and Gala, which helped raise vital scholarship funds for Rowmark Ski Academy. Our community of alumni showed their support by contributing to the Alumni Scholarship Fund, and we are thrilled to be able to award the first-ever Alumni Scholarship for the 2015-2016 school year.

ANNUAL FUNd: YOU did iT!
Thanks to the generosity of the Rowland Hall community, the 2014-2015 Annual Fund was exceedingly successful, raising $848,022. Not only did the school have a banner year with the total amount raised, but also for the first time since 1999 we reached 80 percent parent participation. Together, those numbers paint a striking picture of exactly how invested our donors are in helping the school achieve its mission to provide an extraordinary education for all our students. Collectively, the ever-devoted Rowland Hall community raised funds to support faculty and staff professional development, enhance math and science programming, and advance technology initiatives, the arts, financial aid, and Rowmark, just to name a few.
The Annual Fund and a matching grant from the R. Harold Burton Foundation have made it possible to upgrade the Larimer Center’s sound and lighting systems. The installation of the state-ofthe-art sound system and the new infrastructure for the theatrical lighting system should be complete and ready as we begin this school year. This project is an example of how the school uses unrestricted Annual Fund gifts while also leveraging community support to offset costs of critical projects that benefit our student body and the community partners who rent our facilities.

Larissa Trout joined the Rowland Hall development team last fall as associate director of annual giving after serving as the development director at Spy Hop for six years. She has a passion for the arts; innovative, high-quality educational experiences; and creating opportunities for all young people to succeed in today’s ever-changing world. Larissa earned her B.F.A. in modern dance in 2002 from the University of Utah. Her early career as a dancer led her to work for many nonprofits where she found her passion for fundraising to support an array of organizations. Under Larissa’s direction last year, the Annual Fund exceeded its goal, and parent participation was higher than it had been in many years. We are fortunate to have Larissa on the advancement team.

2014-2015 ROWmARK sCHOLARsHiP FUNd
Rowmark Ski Academy was founded in 1982 to offer a rigorous, year-round racing program coupled with an extraordinary academic high school experience for exceptional ski athletes. Each year Rowmark raises money for the Olle Larsson Scholarship Fund to help studentathletes pay their academy tuition. To help with that effort, a group of dedicated families came together this December to plan and host the first-ever Rowmark Invitational and Gala. It was a fabulous day of ski racing, dining, toasting to the success of the program, and of course, fundraising!
Thank you to everyone who attended the event and supported the Olle Larsson Scholarship Fund throughout the year. A record $95,477 was raised! Your support helps maintain the program’s stature as the best ski racing program in the country.

WHAT’s HAPPENiNG WiTH THE RiCHARd R. sTEiNER CAmPUs?
Since purchasing the Mount Olivet property adjacent to the McCarthey Campus in 2010, Rowland Hall has had a vision of uniting the entire school on one 23-acre campus.
This vision came to life with the completion of the first phase of the Richard R. Steiner Campus in March 2014. Our community now has two state-of-the-art synthetic turf playing fields plus stadium seating and landscaping on the site that will one day be the home of the Rowland Hall Middle and Upper schools. Our athletes are excelling on the new fields, with the girls’ varsity soccer team winning both region and state championships. We continue to hear how impressive the new fields are as well as excited questions about the future of the new campus.
So what’s next? This fall we will engage in a feasibility study to determine our community’s level of readiness for the next fundraising efforts. As plans and timelines become clear, we will keep you informed about the exciting future of a new Rowland Hall campus.

ROWLANd HALL’s ENdOWmENT
The Rowland Hall endowment supports two crucially important school goals: increasing student body diversity through financial aid and scholarships, and enhancing faculty development through salaries and training.
A student body that is racially, ethnically, religiously, and socio-economically diverse greatly enhances our school community. The school also benefits from the diverse array of talents these students share. To expand the diversity of the student body, we must increase the availability of scholarships and need-based financial assistance.
In addition to a diverse student body, an innovative and talented faculty drives the school’s educational and extracurricular program. Rowland Hall takes great pride in its ability to attract and retain exceptional educators and we are committed to fairly compensating our faculty. This endowment also ensures that our teachers stay on top of new information, new concepts, and new technologies, and are exposed to the best minds in education.

UPdATE ON BARRETT TEACHiNG ANd LEARNiNG FELLOWsHiP
Shortly before Associate Head of School Julie Barrett retired last spring, a group of former and current Board leaders established, through their generous donations, the Julie Ashton Barrett Teaching and Learning Fellow Endowment. The fellowship is intended to underwrite an annual visit by a master teacher, and this year we were able to invite Beth Van Meeteren, Ph.D., to share her expertise in early childhood learning with our Beginning School teachers.
Dr. Van Meeteren is a uniquely talented early childhood professor with a strong background in literacy instruction as well as early childhood STEM education. She provided a day of in-service training on August 22, 2014, with hands-on explorations for teachers that enabled them to explore physics concepts and gain insights into how young children construct knowledge.
Engineering habits of mind are quite accessible to young children, and with Dr. Van Meeteren’s guidance teachers successfully learned new ways to implement science, math, and engineering activities. Wendell Thomas, our director of curriculum and instruction, joined the faculty for part of the day, and he quickly recognized that many of the concepts Dr. Van Meeteren presented were applicable to a school-wide science curriculum and were consistent with the national Next Generation of Science Standards.
Dr. Van Meeteren, who is the director for the Center for Early Education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics at the University of Northern Iowa, started her presentation with a quick overview of the newly adopted RH Strategic Plan Goals. After a day with us, she concluded that being the leaders in teaching and learning in the Intermountain West was an achievable goal for our school, and she was eager to continue to collaborate with us in the future.
In addition to the early childhood STEM consultant’s visit, the Julie Ashton Barrett Fellowship also provided funding for the Critical Friends® workshop in which many of our faculty participated this summer. According to the program’s literature, “A Critical Friends Group community is a particular variety of professional learning community consisting of five to 12 members who commit to improving their teaching practice through collaborative learning and structured interactions.”
During her 32-year Rowland Hall career, Julie Barrett championed professional development for our teachers and raised millions to enhance of our students’ learning experience.

To celebrate and share in these individuals’ knowledge and accomplishments, Rowland Hall has created an organization of business professionals and companies, the Rowland Hall Entrepreneur’s Circle. One of our parents, Mike Levinthal, shared this idea with us after he participated in a similar effort with Stanford University.
iTs THREEFOLd missiON
Networking: The Entrepreneur’s Circle provides an avenue for entrepreneurial-minded people to connect with each other to discuss business ventures, brainstorm ideas, and deepen their ties within the entrepreneurial business community.
Opportunities: Circle members are committed to providing current students and alumni, as appropriate, opportunities for professional development, internships, idea sharing, and jobs. Lee Thomsen, Upper School principal, worked with numerous Circle members as the school launched “Beyond the Classroom,” to expand students’ understanding of professional job opportunities.
Giving Back: Entrepreneurs typically recognize that along the path of their success, a number of people played a role and offered help. Circle members believe in giving back to Rowland Hall, the school and community that offered them so much. In order to join the Circle, individuals/families must pledge a future gift to the school of a minimum of $50,000. All gifts will support the school’s endowment. Their gift is dependent upon the success of their entrepreneurial venture.
LE CiRqUE GALA BROUGHT FRiENds ANd FUNds TOGETHER
The 2015 Rowland Hall auction, Le Cirque Gala, was an enormous success. For the past 35 years, the biennial event has provided crucial financial support to the school. This year, attendees and additional supporters donated over $340,000 to support faculty and staff professional development, to build the Richard R. Steiner Campus, and to financial aid.
Thank you to Jennifer Price-Wallin and Tony Wallin for their wonderful leadership as they co-chaired the event. It wouldn’t have been possible without the countless volunteers who helped make it a success.
