A Limerick competition… as in the humorous ﬁve-line poem of renown? Exactly! But I’m guessing there wasn’t a Limerick competition at the Strokestown International Poetry Festival? Or was there? No, there wasn’t! Oh dear!

Tributes as Frenchpark accident victim Kitty is laid to rest  EMMETT CORCORAN

There has been widespread grief across Frenchpark and the wider Roscommon area following the death of 89-year-old Kitty Lavin, who lost her life in a road trafﬁc incident in the centre of the village last Thursday, May 1st. Mrs Lavin, who was born on February 16th, 1936, was remembered at her Funeral Mass in St Asicus’ Church, Frenchpark, on Monday for her devotion to family, her independence, her deep faith, and her active engagement in her community. She was later laid to rest in Cloonshanville Cemetery. Local Fine Gael councillor Liam Callaghan said there was “widespread shock and grief” following her sudden passing. He described Mrs Lavin as “the traditional type of wife and mother” who loved her family, created a warm home, and was known for her hospitality. He added: “The Lavins would be very good neighbours and friends to so many.” At the funeral, symbols of Kitty’s life were brought to the altar includ-

ing her rosary beads, car keys, a sod of turf, her mobile phone, and a copy of the Roscommon Herald, reﬂecting her faith, independence, rural roots, and love of family and local affairs. The late Kitty Lavin is mourned by her sons Pat and Gerry, daughter Martina, grandson Michael, and extended family. She was predeceased

by her husband Michael, her parents Elizabeth and Pat Lane, sister Ettie, and brother Martin. Kitty Lavin, originally from Ardikellen near Tulsk, had lived in Mullen, Frenchpark, for many years. She died after being struck by a truck at the junction of the N5 and R361 at approximately 4.45 pm on Thursday last. A Garda spokesperson conﬁrmed she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was later removed to University Hospital Galway, where a post-mortem examination was due to be carried out. The driver of the truck is understood not to have sustained any injuries. A technical examination by forensic collision investigators was completed later that evening, and the road was reopened. Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have been in the area between 4.30 pm and 5 pm to come forward, particularly those who may have dash-cam footage. Witnesses are asked to contact Castlerea Garda Station on 094 962 1630, the Garda Conﬁdential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Golf Links Road works to ‘go to tender this year’ Long-awaited improvement works along the route between Hannon’s Hotel and the Golf Links Road in Roscommon town are expected to go out to tender later this year, according to local Fianna Fáil councillor Marty McDermott. Speaking to the Roscommon People, Cllr McDermott conﬁrmed that while ground won’t be broken in 2025, he has been assured the project, which includes footpath upgrades, lighting and associated infrastructure, will proceed to tender in the coming months, with construction likely to begin in early 2026. “It is a very dangerous piece of road at present, and I totally understand the very

legitimate concerns of the people who are contacting me about it. I know it is popular with walkers, which is great to see and I can assure people that safety is always number one with me,” he said. “I’ve raised these concerns at every municipal district meeting since 2019 – and will continue to do so until the project is completed.” Cllr McDermott said the delay was attributed to National Transport Authority (NTA) works in Ballaghaderreen being prioritised. However, he added that the Golf Links project remains earmarked for tender this year, and he does not foresee any funding issues arising.

Roscommon among lowest in motor tax intake at €14.6m  EMMETT CORCORAN

Roscommon County Council collected €14.6m in motor tax revenue in 2024, placing it near the bottom nationally, according to newly released ﬁgures from the Department of Transport. Only Leitrim (€7m), Longford (€8.2m), and Monaghan (€13.4m) recorded lower returns last year. The data, released in response to a parliamentary question from Social Democrats TD Aidan Farrelly, shows that Roscommon’s motor tax revenue has remained relatively static over recent years – rising slightly from €14.3m in 2023 and €13.9m in 2022. Among neighbouring counties, Galway led the way with €50.8m collected in 2024. Mayo recorded

€28.2m, while Westmeath brought in €18.2m. Sligo, like Roscommon, ranked lower at €13m. Nationally, total motor tax receipts in 2024 amounted to €924.2m, up slightly from €910.3m the previous year. Dublin remains by far the largest contributor, generating €223.4m, followed by Cork at €108.3m and Galway in third place. At the lower end of the table, Leitrim’s €7m intake in 2024 was the smallest in the country. The ﬁgures account for revenue from standard motor tax only and exclude receipts from registration books, trade plates, trailer licences or refunds. As of the end of February 2025, Roscommon had collected €2.67m in motor tax revenue.

Over the years, the town has increased its status in the competition. Roscommon is at Gold Medal status and won the title of ‘All Ireland Best Kept Large Town’ 2024. PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A (mostly) light-hearted look at the week that was… THURSDAY Honour in defeat Defeat can be glorious, and noble. All day today, people are talking about a magnificent, classic Connacht U-20 football final played in beautiful sunshine in Tuam yesterday evening. Mayo defeated Roscommon by 2-17 to 4-8, Cian Smith’s team having a last-gasp goal disallowed (alleged square ball). By all accounts, it was a fantastic, free-flowing game. Office-bound on a Wednesday night, I was relying on X/Twitter for updates, before Seamus Duke’s report whizzed in. Today, I saw John McGuinness’s two super solo goals online, further evidence of his promise. He was one of many Roscommon stars. Well done to Mayo on edging a thriller, and here’s hoping spectators are treated to something similar when the counties meet in the Connacht Minor Football final at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park on Friday evening (May 9th).

FRIDAY Hidden chargers Personally, I find it intriguing how iPhone chargers tend to go missing so often. Sometimes the charger is mislaid, on other occasions the mystery of its whereabouts could possibly, just possibly, be directly linked to the presence of children in one’s house! Then again, I guess we all borrow chargers from time to time! But speaking of these precious items, what’s with their unreliability? Some of those iPhone chargers last for less time than a Donald Trump staffer (okay, first term). Of course I’ve been aware for a while that phone chargers – which aren’t exactly cheap – can conk out annoyingly quickly, but I wasn’t prepared for my most recent experience. Just two weeks ago, on my way to a football match, I popped into an out-of-town filling station and

the friendly chap behind the counter facilitated my request for a new iPhone charger. A new charger in my hands! It felt great! I promised myself I would keep it close, out of reach of others. But, in a dastardly turn of events, it’s already kaput, as John Cleese memorably said of the dead parrot in the famous Monty Python sketch. Two weeks on, my charger is useless. It’s an ex-charger. It has kicked the bucket. And so the cycle continues, and I will have to purchase a new one. Unless I can borrow one from someone in our house…

SATURDAY/SUNDAY Weekend sport In between cutting the grass and doing other bits and pieces, there was lots of sport on TV to watch, including the World Snooker Championship semi-ﬁnals, the soccer across the water, Leinster’s surprise defeat to Northampton in the rugby, and a thrilling Connacht

MONDAY Don’t mention the w… The inaugural meeting of the Roscommon branch of the ‘How to talk about the weather in modern Ireland Association’ attracted a large number of curious attendees on Sunday night. The meeting, held at a secret location in order to avoid a rumoured counter-protest, was called by locals who want to promote a new way of talking about the Irish weather. Prior to the meeting, members of the community were strictly barred from speaking about the weather during the ‘small talk’ phase. Pre-meeting small talk was restricted to the following: the Galway-Mayo Connacht ﬁnal, Trump (Donald, not Judd), and whether or not people had been at the Roscommon Ploughing. One woman tried to bring up Prince Harry’s controversial interview with the BBC in which he (again) pleaded for privacy from the

just when the kids were going back to school.” “Sure if you had weather like this in Ireland all the time, you’d never leave the country”. “There wasn’t a burger bun to be got in town last Friday.” “It was warmer in Portrun the other day than it was in Portugal!” After half an hour of this, the chairperson’s patience had worn very thin. “I said I’d allow a bit of latitude at the beginning, but with respect, friends, these are the types of predictable clichés I want us to get away from. What is it about the Irish people that sees us talk about the weather non-stop?” He was just about to propose a new ‘Weather narrative’ – drafted before the meeting by the prospective executive – when the prospective secretary broke ranks and mused “I wonder how long will this warm spell last? Is there any talk of it breaking?” The chairperson sighed. As the meeting descended into near-chaos, the chairperson called for order. “For God’s sake, let’s just enjoy the media, but the chairperson ruled this good weather! Stop saying it’s nearly out of order. too warm! Stop making predictable When proceedings formally began, references to school holidays! Nominations invited for Garda Youth Awards An Garda Síochána, Roscommon/Longford Division is delighted to announce the launch of the 7th annual Roscommon/Longford Garda Youth Awards, in association with Longford and Roscommon County Councils who are sponsoring the initiative again this year. The Roscommon/Longford Garda Youth Awards celebrate outstanding young people between the ages of 13 and 21 years. An Garda Síochána, Roscommon/ Longford, in conjunction with Longford and Roscommon County Councils recognise that a lot of good work is being done by young people in every community in these two counties. The nomination process is now open and An Garda Síochána in Roscommon and Longford are inviting the public to nominate a young person or group of young people they know, who were committed to making a difference to their community during the last year. Nominees can be nominated for one of four categories: individual (where a young person has made a positive contribution to their community, making it a better place to live), group (where two or more made a positive contribution to their community, making it a better place to live), special achievement (where a young person has overcome difﬁcult circumstances and deﬁed all the odds, and whose commitment deserves recognition), community safety (where a young person or persons, through a crime prevention or safety initiative or innovation, have made their community a safer place to live). Return of ‘5 Peaks Challenge’ to support Strokestown GAA  EMMETT CORCORAN

Nearly 20 years since it was last held, Strokestown GAA will bring back its iconic 5 Peaks Challenge this August in a major fundraising drive to reduce the club’s remaining debt and secure the future of local Gaelic games. The ofﬁcial launch of the challenge will take place this Saturday, May 8th, at 8 pm in The Percy French Hotel. The all-day hiking event, taking place on Saturday, August 23rd, aims to raise more than €500,000 and is open to all levels of walkers who wish to support the club and its vital facilities. The club has invested almost €2.3m in recent years in transforming its infrastructure, supported primarily through local fundraising and bank borrowings. Less than ﬁve per cent of that total has come from central Government. Organisers say the renewed challenge marks both a symbolic and practical push to complete the fundraising effort and leave a lasting legacy. Departing from The Percy French Hotel at

Rooskey resident Seán Sherwin hailed as Fianna Fáil ‘institution’ Martin leads tributes to key backroom figure  EMMETT CORCORAN

Long-time Rooskey resident Seán Sherwin, a former Fianna Fáil TD and long-serving party organiser, has been described as “an institution” in the party following his death last week. The late Mr Sherwin died at his home in Lavagh, Rooskey, Co Roscommon, on Wednesday, April 30th. He was in his late 70s. Mr Sherwin, who lived for many years in Rooskey, has been remembered as a deeply committed public servant and a formative ﬁgure in Fianna Fáil, including at the height of the party’s popularity. Taoiseach and Uachtarán Fianna Fáil, Micheál Martin TD, said he was “deeply saddened” by Mr Sherwin’s passing. “Seán was an institution within Fianna Fáil and was widely known and respected within the party. He was the quintessential gentleman, loved politics and loved the party.” Originally from Ballyfermot, Seán Sherwin entered the Dáil in March 1970, aged just 23, winning a by-election in Dublin South-West. He served until 1973 and later became national

organiser for the party – a role he held for over two decades. In his tribute, Taoiseach Martin added: “Seán encouraged and mentored generations of election candidates and made a great contribution to the party and its organisation... Seán has left a lasting legacy, including the party’s annual calendar of commemorations.” Paying tribute to Mr Sherwin’s personal qualities, Mr Martin said: “His warm personality was infectious and his ability to resolve difﬁcult

disputes legendary.” He continued: “After his retirement, Seán continued his service to the party as a party member and regularly shared his insights and sage advice.” The funeral Mass took place on Monday morning at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Ballyfermot, Dublin, where Mr Sherwin grew up. The Irish tricolour was the ﬁrst gift brought to the altar, representing, according to celebrant Fr Adrian Egan, “his great pride and love for his country and in serving his community.” The late Mr Sherwin was predeceased by his wife, Betty (née Davis), and is mourned by his children John, Liz and Marc, their spouses, his grandchildren, his brother Kevin, sister-in-law Catherine, and extended family. He was also predeceased by his sister Margaret, brother-inlaw Bernie, and cousin Pat Dooner, who died recently. Following reposal at his Rooskey home and later in Ballyfermot, Mr Sherwin was buried in Saggart Cemetery. An enduring ﬁgure in Irish political life, Mr Sherwin remained highly active in his local community in Rooskey after retiring from national roles. His contribution was marked with deep appreciation by those who knew him across political and community spheres. May he rest in peace.

Roscommon racing season begins It’s official – summer has arrived, with Roscommon Racecourse re-opening its doors on Monday, May 12th, to stages its first fixture of the year. With a 4.25 pm start time, the upcoming fixture is an all-flat card, with the opening two races worth €25,000 and €30,000. It is expected that all the main flat yards will have runners in both of those races. Racecourse manager Michael Finneran and his staff have been busy making sure that everything is in the best of shape for the opening day. “We have had plenty of rain in the early spring, but the dry weather over the last week has been welcome so we’re in a very good position”, Michael said. “We are always trying to improve things for the participants and our racegoers, so we hope that everyone enjoys their day, and we hope to have a very busy season.” Top flat rider Colin Keane, who enjoys travelling to Roscommon, said, “I would say that Roscommon is on a par with any of our tracks in terms of its racing surface. It is always in great shape and that encourages the likes of my boss Ger Lyons to run good horses there. We’ve had plenty of luck at Roscommon and hopefully that will continue this year.” Jockey Gavin Ryan is another that enjoys his trip

to the local racecourse: “The facilities there are top class. The weigh room is as good as any weigh room anywhere. It is spacious and we have everything that we need there. The racing surface is always in great shape, and it is a pleasure to ride there.”

Galway beat Mayo, as flags kept in reserve! Our columnist Frank Brandon on the bomb threat thwarted by Brazilian police at a recent Lady Gaga concert, remembering the late Willie Keaveney, and reflecting on a low-key build-up to what turned out to be an enthralling Connacht final between Galway and Mayo… On this lovely Saturday morning, I am heading to Castlebar at a relatively early hour where I am picking up our daughter’s two dogs who are coming to Creggs (the dogs, not our daughter) for the weekend. As I drive through the Mayo countryside, I am surprised at the almost complete lack of green and red county flags along the way. Bearing in mind that the Connacht football final between old rivals Galway and Mayo is due to take place in Castlebar the day after my trip, I would have expected to have seen flags flying from every vantage point in the county. Way back in 1989 when Mayo got to that year’s All-Ireland final Carol and myself and our three children at that time took a house in Achill for a week, and I will never forget the colour that was evident in every part of Mayo. It was almost as if someone had painted the entire county in their famed green and red. Houses, cars, tractors, sheep, bales of silage and haysheds had all been transformed, and it is a memory that I will take with me for as long as I live. In the intervening years, as Mayo continued their long quest for Sam Maguire, the habit of flying their flags never left them, and so – even though it was ‘only’ a Connacht final – I was surprised to see so few flags flying on Saturday morning. Having gone back home again that morning, later on I was in Charlestown and it was the

same story down there – an occasional flag fluttering in the gentle breeze – but only a very occasional one. I also noted that in the parts of Galway that I drove through there weren’t very many flags on display there either in the morning, but by Saturday evening there seemed to be a good few more. Anyway, it made me wonder if everyone was right and that the outrageous All-Ireland draw that the Connacht champions got would dilute the intensity of the fixture, with the effect that neither team would want to win the provincial decider. And if that was indeed the case, well you wouldn’t bother putting your flags out for a game you didn’t want to win. However, thankfully that message didn’t get through to the players and we were treated to a Connacht final to compare with any we’ve had down the years. As a Galway man, I rejoiced in my county’s victory as much as any other Galway person (mind you, the game could have gone either way). I’m sure all the flags that stayed indoors this weekend will now start to make their way out, and by the time the All-Ireland group matches begin, both counties will be festooned in colour. Funny enough, when I got to Castlebar, there were pink bicycles and pink bunting everywhere. I soon discovered that Sunday also saw a women’s mini-marathon taking place to raise funds for many different charities and good causes. More than 2,000 ladies took part in an event that was won by 15-year-old Freya Renton, with her twin sister Holly finishing in fifth. Anyway, to celebrate the Galway win, myself and Paul and Ciara headed over to Castlecoote Lodge where we had a few lovely creamy pints of Guinness and where we ran into a group of highranking local dignitaries. We were joined by the Honorary Consul of Azerbaijan Terry Leyden, the Lord Mayor of Cremully, and the uncrowned King of Castlecoote, both of whom shall be nameless. Terry told us he recently had a visit from members of the Ward family from America, whose great-granduncles once owned the property that is now Castlecoote Lodge – and of how thrilled they were to see the place of their roots.

Drawing record crowds – and sobering threats I won’t deny that I am not really a fan of Lady Gaga. If you asked me to name any of her songs I would have to pass, but judging by the size of the crowd that came to see her perform in Rio de Janeiro over the weekend I must be in the minority. An extraordinary 2.1 million fans packed Copacabana Beach to see her free show which was funded by the city to try to revitalise Rio’s economy. It obviously worked, as the concert generated up to 88 million euro. Prior to last Saturday night’s concert, Madonna held the record for the highest attendance at a female artist’s gig, with 1.6 million seeing her in the same place last year, while Scotland’s own Rod Stewart has the all-time record (male or female), with 3.4 million having attended his 1994 New Year’s Eve concert, also in Rio. However, to show the kind of world we now live in, police foiled attempts to detonate explosives at the event. An unnamed group who spread hate speech and radicalise teenagers online through violent content and encouraging self-harm were aiming to cause several explosions using improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails. The thought of bombs going off in a crowd of that size where everyone was packed like sardines is almost too horrific to contemplate. All I can say is thank God the police intercepted

them. As the world reels from wars everywhere and as we struggle with problems about gender, immigration, housing, possible job losses and still desperately overcrowded hospitals,

isn’t it sad to think that people are prepared to callously murder hundreds (if not thousands) of innocent concert-goers to simply get publicity for their misguided aims? It’s a sad world.

As always, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Terry’s, and only for our chauffeur Mark arriving exactly on time for us we would happily have stayed a bit longer. It’s not every day you can drink with an Honorary Consul.

And finally… As I am writing this on the Bank Holiday Monday evening my mind drifts all the way back to a Saturday morning in the early 1970s when I was thumbing home for the weekend and had taken up a spot on the road outside Maynooth. I wasn’t there too long ‘till a fine new Cortina pulled up and I was pleasantly surprised to see that my neighbour Willie Keaveney was at the wheel. Willie, who was a hugely talented carpenter, was a foreman for John Paul Construction in Dublin and he too was heading back to Creggs for the weekend. Vincent Shanagher was with him, and while I won’t go into details, it turned out to be a fairly slow boat home. Many years later I was bringing furniture back from England to sell here and the by then retired Willie used to give me a hand repairing stuff that might have got damaged in transit. I won’t deny that there were times I thought he’d never get a piece finished, but while I would settle for a job if it was half done, Willie was a perfectionist and he would give nothing back unless it was properly completed. So much so

that no one would ever know any alterations had been made at all. For a good few years we travelled the country doing house removals and delivering furniture and other household goods and Little Willie (I know he won’t mind me calling him that) never baulked at anything we might have to lift. Some of the old wardrobes and dressers would be a ton weight, but Willie would never give in. He might have been small in stature but he had a big heart. He was a great man for music sessions and could play the drums and the spoons as well as any man. Himself and his great friend the late Vinnie Keaveny used to attend almost every session around the place. Sadly, Willie had been in failing health for the last few years. He was being cared for in the nursing home in Clonberne. Today (as I write) he is reposing in Divilly’s Funeral Home in Glenamaddy after passing away on Saturday. We talk about the characters that contribute to the history of a village and Willie was one of a kind in that regard. I have so many happy memories of my time with him. To his brother Sean, his sister Olive, his sister-in-law Anne and all his extended family, neighbours and friends, my deepest sympathy on your loss. Renewed calls for better parking facilities at Roscommon Hospital Concerns over what has been described as “extremely unfair” parking arrangements at Roscommon University Hospital (RUH) have been raised again, with a local councillor and the new Fianna Fáil health spokesperson both urging urgent action. Fianna Fáil councillor Marty McDermott has said the current situation, which regularly sees patients and visitors forced to park nearly half a kilometre away at King & Moffat Dr Hyde Park, is placing an undue burden on people with reduced mobility, including older patients and those with health difﬁculties. Cllr McDermott told the Ro-

scommon People that “it is extremely unfair, particularly on the elderly and those with mobility issues, that parking at the hospital is so poor.” He conﬁrmed that Roscommon-Galway TD Dr Martin Daly had made representations to the HSE, but that the response received was “totally inadequate”. Dr Daly, recently appointed Fianna Fáil’s spokesperson on health, has committed to “redoubling his efforts to see a plan for parking progressed as a priority”. Local businesses call for action over tourism decline < EMMETT CORCORAN

Local hoteliers have confirmed to the Roscommon People that the national downward trend in overseas visitor numbers is being felt at a local level. Damian Hannon of Hannon’s Hotel in Roscommon town said the decline in the number of overseas visitors’ bookings for accommodation has been noticeable in recent months. Stewart Waters of The Percy French Hotel in Strokestown told the Roscommon People that while the food trade is holding up well, he has noticed that accommodation bookings from international visitors have declined from previous years and expressed concerns over whether that trend will reverse as the slow start to the tourist season moves into the peak tourist time over the summer

months. The comments confirm what statistics from the Central Statistics Office have been saying for a number of months now. Echoing the concerns of Mr Waters, Adrian Cox of Cox’s Steakhouse in Dromod said that while trade for food and drink is strong, there is a “real decline in the number of visitors from the continent in the early part of the tourism season.” All the local business people who spoke to the Roscommon People this week have said the industry needs some relief from the pressures it is facing, and a government-led strategy around supporting tourismdependent businesses would be welcome. Recently, a key ask for tourism industry bodies, such as the Restaurants Association of Ireland, has been

the reversal of the 13.5 per cent VAT rate to the 9 per cent rate introduced on a temporary basis in 2011, which came to an end in September 2024. Despite political promises, the reversal to a lower rate of VAT for foodled businesses has not yet manifested with some speculation among Government representatives that it may be included, perhaps in a compromised form, in Budget 2026. That is against the backdrop of dismal tourism figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) for the start of this year showing the number of visitors to Ireland dropped 25 percent in the first month of the year, a trend which got progressively worse in February with a rise to 30 per cent: “Some 338,900 foreign residents completed their visits to Ireland in January 2025, a decrease

of 25.0% compared with January 2024.” The CSO has said that 304,300 foreign visitors completed a trip to Ireland in the second month of the year, down from 433,300 in February of last year. The decline eased slightly in March, but still reached 15% when compared to March of 2024. Gregg Patrick, Statistician in the Tourism and Travel Division of the CSO, said: “The results show that 441,200 foreign visitors departed Ireland on overseas routes in March 2025, a decrease of 15% compared with March 2024. “This decrease continues the downward year-on-year trend in foreign visitor numbers first observed in September 2024. However, the decrease in March 2025 was less than the decrease in February 2025.”

Business event tourism strategy launched A new national strategy aimed at boosting Ireland’s business tourism sector could bring significant benefits to Roscommon’s local economy, with particular potential for small and medium enterprises across the region. Business Events 2030, launched at the Convention Centre Dublin by Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke TD, sets out to drive sustained growth in high-value business travel to Ireland. The sector currently contributes more than €1bn to the Irish economy each year, delivers €290m to the Exchequer, and supports approximately 22,000 jobs nationwide. Developed in partnership with Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Ireland and several public bodies including IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and the Universities of Ireland, the strategy outlines plans to deliver an average annual revenue growth rate of 8 per cent between now and 2030. Roscommon’s inclusion in the wider regional tourism infrastructure and business networks positions it to share in these economic returns.

New car sales in Roscommon dip as electric vehicle uptake climbs New car registrations in County Roscommon dipped marginally this year, according to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), with a total of 667 vehicles registered from January to April – down 2.5 per cent on the same period last year (684). Nationally, new car sales rose 3.4 per cent, with 73,505 units registered compared to 71,063 in 2024. The number of new electric cars registered in Roscommon rose modestly by 7.7 per cent to 56 units, up from 52 last year. This modest local growth contrasts with the national trend, where electric vehicle (EV) registrations

surged by 25.5 per cent in the first four months of the year, totalling 11,311 units. Commenting on the broader picture, SIMI Director General Brian Cooke noted that “EV registrations are 23.7% ahead of April last year, and year to date increased by 25.5%, representing 11,311 new electric cars.” Across the country, April new car registrations rose by 1.9 per cent to 8,731 vehicles, compared with 8,565 in April 2024. Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) sales increased significantly by 15 per cent in April, although year-to-date figures remain 9.5 per cent lower than last year.

Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) registrations fell by 14.6 per cent in April and are down 8 per cent overall this year. Imported used car volumes also increased slightly in April, with 5,249 units registered – up 0.8 per cent on April 2024. Overall, used imports are up 7.5 per cent year-on-year. The market share for new cars by engine type continues to shift, with petrol vehicles leading at 27.68 per cent, followed by hybrid petrol-electric at 23.66 per cent, diesel at 17.36 per cent, battery electric at 15.39 per cent, and plug-in hybrids at 14.29 per cent.

Local learners to benefit from new digital skills hub

Roscommon participants are among those set to benefit from a new €10m digital and cybersecurity training hub launched in the north-west. The North-West DEPTH (Digital Employment Pathways Training Hub), backed by EU PEACEPLUS funding and €12.8m in national support, was officially launched by Minister Marian Harkin, (pictured right) at ATU Donegal. The cross-border initiative will provide free training to over 2,000 learners, with courses ranging from basic digital literacy to advanced cybersecurity. It is a joint effort between ATU, Ulster University, Donegal ETB and NorthWest Regional College, and aims to support adult learners and local enterprise.

€1.2m commercial rates unpaid in Roscommon last year

Roscommon businesses left nearly €1.2m in commercial rates unpaid by the end of 2023, according to new figures released by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. Roscommon County Council had been due to collect €12.7m over the year but received just €11.5m, representing a 91 per cent collection rate. That figure marked an improvement from the 88 per cent recorded in 2023. Minister of State James Browne confirmed the council wrote off €253,000 in unpaid rates during the year. The figures come as businesses across the county prepare for a 5 per cent increase in commercial rates from 2025, the first rise in two decades. The rate increase was proposed in late 2024 and agreed by the ruling coalition on the council. It is expected to be formally adopted at the council’s annual budget meeting. Council officials have pointed out that commercial rates in the county have not changed in 20 years, during which time inflation has risen by nearly 39 per cent.

Two young entrepreneurs from County Roscommon have joined forces to launch a new vehicle and trailer sales venture in Rathcormac, Co Sligo. John McDermott from Croghan and Gary Nicholson from Boyle opened their shared site on April 1st, operating side by side under the banners of McDermott Trailer Sales and GN Motors. The venture combines two distinct but complementary businesses. John, who founded McDermott Trailer Sales in 2013, brings over a decade of experience in sourcing and servicing quality trailers, including livestock and generalpurpose models. He continues to run a trailer service centre in Croghan and is now expanding his reach into the northwest. Gary, trading as GN Motors, deals in jeeps, vans, and cars – focusing particularly on highspec, low-mileage vehicles imported from the UK.

Roscommon MART WATCH Cattle: There was a very large entry of stock on offer at Friday’s special sale of bullocks (May 2nd). There was a large attendance of customers at the ringside, with online bidders also active. Bullocks fetched an average of €4.63 per kilo up to €6.72 per kilo. There was a good entry of dry cows, and they made an average of €3.44 per kilo up to €4.16 per kilo. Dry cows ranged from an average of €3.44 per kilo up to €4.16 per kilo. Sample prices: LMX -640KG -€2,660-€4.16 per kg, LMX- 740KG- €3,010- €4.07 per kg, SAX -615KG- €2,220- €3.16 per kg, SA -635KG -€2,210- €3.48 per kg, LMX - 790KG- €3,260 €4.13 per kg, and FR- 735 KG- €2,090 -€2.84 per kg. Bullocks ranged from an average of €4.63 per kilo up to €6.72 per kilo. Sheep There was a large number of sheep on offer at the weekly sale of hoggets, spring lambs,

and stag ewes at Roscommon Mart on Wednesday, May 7th. Prices for hoggets made up to €230, spring lambs made up to €206, while stag ewes topped out at €324. There was also a very good entry of ewes, with lambs at foot making up to €434. The next sheep sale takes place on Wednesday, May 14th. The yard opens at 8 am, and all stock must be penned by 10 am. Please note all sheep must be tagged with a full yellow EID tag set. The sale can be viewed live on marteye.ie. Maureen’s family would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who supported us both during her illness and following her sad passing on 20th May 2024. We are especially grateful to the numerous friends, neighbours, family members and work colleagues from all over the country and abroad who attended her reposal, funeral mass and burial. Thanks also to all who made contact with us via phone and text, or left messages and tributes on RIP.ie and also to all those who sent cards, letters and flowers. Thanks also to all who left donations for Roscommon/Mayo Hospice in Maureen’s memory. A very special thanks to all the staff in the Haematology Day Ward and the Claddagh Ward in Galway University Hospital for the wonderful care, kindness and friendship shown to Maureen during her illness. Also thanks to Dr. Hayat, Dr Crosbie, McAuliffe’s Pharmacy, Fr. McHugh and Fr. Hogg for their wonderful support. Thanks to Fr. Stephen Ezenwegbu for celebrating Maureen’s Funeral Mass and for officiating at the graveside. Thanks also to Fergus Harman for the beautiful singing during the mass and to Padraig King for his lovely rendition of Maureen’s favourite song. A special thanks to Mary Keeley for her personal and meaningful reflection at the end of mass. Sincere thanks to Dermot and Yvonne Foley, Undertakers, for their guidance and help throughout the funeral period. Their kindness, care and attention to detail, throughout was such a huge help to us all. A special thanks to Yvonne who prepared Maureen’s Mass booklet. Thanks also to Anna for her help and kindness. Also thanks to the gravediggers who did such a wonderful job on preparing Maureen’s final resting place. Special thanks to Clarín Gilchrest for providing such beautiful floral arrangements at our home and church and for the grave. We are deeply grateful to Brian Carroll, Trevor Hunt and the Officers and members of Kilmore GAA club for the outstanding work they did over the funeral days. The traffic plan and its implementation was truly amazing. Thanks also to the bus drivers who were part of this as well. Also thanks to Kilmore GAA for forming a Guard of Honour and escorting their former Secretary on her final journey. It was a very moving tribute. Thanks to the staff and pupils of Scrabbagh National sSchool and our neighbours and friends who formed a Guard of Honour as Maureen left her home for the last time. It was so beautiful and meant a lot to us all. We also extend our thanks to our neighbours and friends who were so supportive in helping to provide refreshments at our home during the reposing. Thanks to all at the Silver Eel also for providing an excellent meal to everyone after the funeral. A special thanks to Brian Carroll and the Croke Park staff who arranged for such a beautiful and moving appreciation for Maureen before the Roscommon game a few days later. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation. The holy sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions. Maureen was a much loved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, sister in law, cousin, great neighbour and friend. She was an outgoing and energetic woman who brightened the day for all who knew her. We have so many wonderful memories of her which will help us to cope with the huge void her passing has left in all our lives.

A Friday night feast as Roscommon and Mayo bid for minor glory Electric Ireland Connacht Minor FC Final: Mayo v Roscommon on Friday evening at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park at 6.30 pm < SEAMUS DUKE

There is a buzz in GAA circles in the county ahead of this Friday evening’s Connacht minor football final between Roscommon and Mayo. Roscommon have been excellent in this championship so far, and enter this final unbeaten. They will travel to Castlebar with confidence, confidence that is well founded. When the sides met at King & Moffatt Dr Hyde Park earlier in the championship, Roscommon won by 4-15 to 3-9 in what was a thrilling game. While team manager Shane Moran and his selectors are very quick to point out that Mayo have improved since that game, so too have Roscommon, and the self-belief within the group will be sky-high. Whoever loses on Friday evening will still be in the championship – they will be into an AllIreland quarter-final – but the prize of winning a provincial title by beating Mayo in Castlebar is very attractive and a successful raid by Roscommon would be a major achievement for this team. Cian Trimble has been very impressive in goal for the primrose and blue in a defence which is led by Conor Tighe. Tighe, as well as colleagues Tadhg Rogers, Seamus Hussey and Diarmuid

Team captain Dara Curran will lead the attack with Shay McGuinness and Luke Shally set to feature up front as well. Roscommon have plenty of options off the bench too with the likes of Dean Casey, Marc Shally and Conor Kelly excellent performers, to name just three. Mayo will come into the game on a high after their 3-15 to 0-15 win in the semi-final against Galway last Friday night. They have plenty of fine performers in their ranks – such as Barry Langan, Declan Duffy and Adam Kelly – while they look particularly dangerous up front. Against Galway, the full-forward line of Tony Carey, Conor Hession and Oisin Murphy looked especially sharp. Roscommon have been warned. It is always a minefield to try to predict the likely outcome of games at underage level. It is fair to say that Roscommon have looked a very impressive and well coached side in the championship this year. Winning away at MacHale Park is never easy, but Roscommon have momentum behind them and they should be good enough to prevail. Prediction: Roscommon.

‘We’re going into final in positive frame of mind’ < SEAMUS DUKE

A really fascinating duel is in prospect on Friday evening when Mayo entertain unbeaten Roscommon in this year’s provincial minor football decider in Castlebar. Mayo defeated Galway by 3-15 to 0-15 in the semi-final last Friday night and with home advantage they will be hoping to reverse the result between the two teams earlier in the competition when Roscommon won a high-scoring encounter by 4-15 to 3-9 at Hyde Park. When he spoke to People Sport recently, Roscommon team manager Shane Moran said that he was impressed by Mayo in their semi-final win against Galway. “Mayo have improved a lot since we played them, that’s for sure. Their defence was much tighter and they were sharper all over the field. They now have the momentum of winning a semi-final in Castlebar and also they are going for four titles in a row so we know what we are facing.” Roscommon have had a few weeks

since they completed their group games. How has training gone since then? “We won four matches out of four – which was great – and we have worked very hard since. Our attitude is that now we are in the Connacht final… Mayo have 41 titles and we have only 14 and we have only won four titles since the year 2000, so there is plenty of incentive for us to go and win this final.” Moran says that although this Friday’s game is a big one, it is in some respects just another game in terms of the bigger picture. “I don’t want this Connacht final to define this team or these players. The end goal is to be able to sit in Dr Hyde Park in six or seven years’ time and watch some of these lads playing intercounty senior football. Having said that, we will still be doing everything we can to win on Friday night.” Roscommon have played challenge games in recent weeks against Kerry and Cork, losing both, but those results are not important in the greater scheme of things.

Shane Moran: “We were trying out a few things and the results of those games were not important. We used them to try to improve our play and we think we have done that.” The Roscommon manager could not be any more complimentary about the players on the 2025 panel. “These lads have been a dream to work with. They are a credit to their families, their schools, and their clubs. There must be great role models in Roscommon because these young lads are fantastic. It’s not easy being a 15 or 16 year old today but I cannot praise these lads enough for what they have done.” Shane knows what’s at stake this weekend and he, the management team and players are looking forward to the challenge. “We are going to Castlebar to give the best account of ourselves that we can. If we do that we will give this final a very good shot. It looks like we will have everyone available so we go there in a positive frame of mind” he concluded.

Roscommon season starts on Monday Horses for Courses There is an all-national hunt card at Tipperary this evening (Thursday) – five chases and two bumpers, starting at 5.05 pm. Tomorrow evening, racing is at Ballinrobe on the flat, off at 5.05 pm, and over the sticks at Downpatrick, with a 4.50 pm start. There’s two more meetings on Saturday, with Naas staging flat racing at 1.25 pm, and Cork with jump racing away at 2.15 pm. Jimmy McGuinness’s side have been tested many times in the league and championship and have passed every test so far. Their biggest challenge of the year thus far will come this Saturday, as Armagh have proven to be excellent All-Ireland champions. It will be a ﬁerce contest. I fancy Donegal to win by a point or two.

Leinster SFC final: Louth v Meath on Sunday in Croke Park at 4.15 pm For the ﬁrst time in 15 years the Leinster SFC title will be won by a team other than Dublin. This pair have a history too. Buccaneers win Connacht U-17 Cup in great style A physically stronger and more rounded Buccaneers squad overpowered Creggs 42-8 in the Bank of Ireland Connacht U-17 cup final at The Green, Creggs, recently. After weathering a promising start by the homesters, Buccs took a firm grip on the proceedings in front of a big crowd at the Co Galway venue where the outcome was rarely in doubt after the opening quarter. This very strong and promising squad, who recorded an U-16 league and cup double last season, wound up the playing season in fitting style. Skipper Ciaran West led by example in a hard-working pack that maintained constant pressure on their opponents all around the paddock with Evin Claffey and No 8 Kelly putting in Trojan efforts. Scrumhalf McGowan cajoled his teammates throughout into giving of their best and, with ball in hand, all the backs posed a considerable threat, especially Cotton, Finnan and O’Donoghue. Moore and St John’s go head to head for title A big weekend lies ahead for the Roscommon & District League with the Premier Division Championship set to be decided on Sunday. Sunday will also see the Division 1 Championship race being decided, while on Saturday the Women’s Cup Final and the Women’s Shield finals will be played. Meanwhile, the Shield semi-final featuring Cloonfad United and Ballinasloe Town will be played on Friday evening at Lecarrow. After a very close season-long contest the Premier Championship comes down to the wire with St John’s Athletic playing Moore United at Lecarrow at 2 pm on Sunday. It’s a game St John’s Athletic must win while a draw will suffice for Moore United. Going into this game both teams have only lost one of their 13 games with Moore having drawn two and St John’s drawing three. St John’s have done better when it comes to scoring and conceding goals with a goal difference of plus 25 as against a goal difference of plus 12 for Moore United. Moore United were Premier champions in 2002/3 season and again in the 2022/2023 season. In contrast, St John’s are going for their first ever Premier title. Moore United have a big panel of players to pick from while St John’s Athletic will be hoping that at least a couple of their injured players make a full recovery for Sunday’s game. When the teams last played (at the end of February, at Moore) it was St John’s Athletic who came out on top on a 3-1 scoreline. Daire Keenan scored two and Caimin Boland one for the winners that day, with James Byrne replying for Moore United. This weekend’s game kicks off at 2 pm this Sunday at St John’s’ home ground at Lecarrow and it will surely be a very tense and absorbing encounter. Moylough ‘79 v Skyvalley Rovers Moylough ‘79 and Skyvalley Rovers meet at Moylough at 11 am on Sunday with the outcome deciding who wins the Division 1 Championship and gets automatic promotion to the Premier Division. While the home side need to win, a draw will do Skyvalley Rovers. This was a really competitive division with just three points separating the top five teams at the end of the season. When the teams played their first-round game last October at Taughmaconnell, Skyvalley Rovers edged it 3-2, but as the scoreline suggests, there was little between the sides. Home advantage should give Moylough a slight edge but both teams can credibly aspire to victory. Kick-off on Sunday is at 11 am. Women’s Cup final: Dunmore Town v Kilkerrin Utd On Saturday evening at 8 pm the Women’s cup final will be played at Lecarrow. This season’s final features Dunmore Town and Kilkerrin United.

Dunmore Town had an impressive 3-1 win over league champions Ballaghaderreen in their semi-final, with Siobhan O’Grady scoring two and Stephanie O’Neill adding the third. Dunmore had beaten Boyle Celtic 6-0 in the quarter-finals. Stephanie O’Neill scored four and Amy Burns two in that game. Kilkerrin went to a thrilling penalty shoot-out before overcoming Castlerea Celtic in the semi-finals. Caitlin Boyle and Katie Connelly scored their two goals in normal time. They won 2-1 away to Ballinasloe Town in the quarter-finals, Samantha Fahy scoring both their goals. Overall, the teams look well matched and everything will come down to how they play on the day. Women’s Shield final: Ballinasloe Town v Castlerea Celtic The Shield final features Ballinasloe Town v Castlerea Celtic at the League Grounds, Lecarrow at 5 pm on Saturday evening. Both teams have shown great determination all season with a huge improvement in evidence from last season. It’s a fitting reward for both that they feature in this season’s Shield final. Moore United retained the Premier Division Cup following a 4-2 win over Ballymoe FC at the League Grounds, Lecarrow on Friday evening. This was a right good game of football between two teams who were committed to attacking football. Moore got off to a great start when Jay McPhilbin met a free-kick with his head to guide the ball to the net after just four minutes of play. The same player made it 2-0 four minutes later when Ballymoe gave away possession out on their right. With the ‘keeper caught out of position McPhilbin pounced to score. Moore ‘keeper James Costello pulled off some great saves to deny Damien Goggins and James Connaughton, before Ger Connaughton headed a Goggins free-kick to the Moore net with 31 minutes played. Game on, at 2-1. The Nevin brothers – Andy, Jack and Charles – tormented the Ballymoe defence throughout the game and with seven minutes played in the second half Charles converted a penalty for Moore. Nine minutes later Damien Goggins made it 3-2 when he scored following a good passing move. Charles Nevin scored his second three minutes later and

Moore held out for a 4-2 win after a very entertaining game. Moore United now look forward to the league title decider this Sunday, away to St John’s Athletic. In the Premier Division last weekend Castlerea Celtic beat Ballaghaderreen 5-3 in what was their last league game of the season. Gerry Ward scored four and Chris Kelly one for the winners, with Kamil Udylo, Aaron Spratt and Tom Ward replying for the losers. Women’s soccer Ballaghaderreen Women’s team were presented with their league title winning trophy following their 5-0 win over Kilkerrin Utd at Ballaghaderreen (see opposite page). Rebecca Finan scored two in the first half and added a third early in the second. Allanah McGreal and Caoimhe Feeney completed the scoring on a day of celebration for Ballaghaderreen. Castlerea Celtic are through to this Saturday’s Shield final (5 pm) following a 3-1 win over Boyle Celtic at Boyle. Young Roscommon golfing star Olivia Costello added another prestigious title to her CV last weekend as she won the 54-hole Pinergy Woodbrook Scratch Cup by five shots, beating a top class field in the process. Olivia shot a one under par 73 in each of her first two rounds and led the tournament by one shot going into Monday’s final 18 holes. The Roscommon Town teenager pulled away from the field with a superb final round of three under par 71, which included two birdies and an eagle, to end the tournament on five under par and five ahead of the field. It has been a tremendous start to the year for Olivia who has also won the Triple World Series Final and finished runner-up in the Spanish Amateur Championship. Next week Olivia will compete in the German Girls Amateur Championships which starts on Thursday, May 15th.

In the end, AthleagueTremane edged out the Gaels by the narrowest of margins, winning 4-6 to 3-8 after a pulsating contest. The game began at a blistering pace, with both sides showing their intent early. It took until the third minute for the deadlock to be broken, when Cathal Nerney pointed superbly from play. The second half was just as frenetic. Two minutes in, Gaels’ goalkeeper Russ Reynolds made a brilliant save from James Kelly’s ground strike, resulting in a 65. Although the ensuing effort dropped short, it set the tone for a fiercely contested half. Tom Óg Reddington went agonisingly close for Athleague-Tremane with a blistering run that ended with a shot off the post.

Athleague-Tremane kept up the pressure, and Connolly completed his hat-trick after Connaughton’s free dropped short, striking expertly on the double. Reddington, Cody Keegan, and Gordon combined beautifully to tack on another point for Athleague-Tremane. But the Gaels, and Nerney in particular, refused to wilt. Despite tenacious marking from Callum Ward, Nerney struck a crucial point to open the Gaels’ second-half account at seven and a half minutes. Connaughton added a point for AthleagueTremane, followed by another from Gordon after a good link-up with Connolly. Re-Joyce: 2025 Connacht final was a tonic Last Sunday’s Connacht football final was a tonic, the second half in particular serving up entertainment and combat that was in the great tradition of Galway-Mayo games down the decades. Padraic Joyce’s high-fielding, athletic, powerful team – currently looking like very realistic contenders for the All-Ireland title – went to Castlebar as warm favourites, not that any sane person would have underestimated Mayo’s capacity to possibly level the playing field with their familiar mix of intensity, talent, unpredictability and pride. If there’s a manual on how to start against warm favourites who have wind advantage, its author is likely to have added in ‘try and nip an early goal’ amidst all the more tactics-based advice. Darren McHale obliged, finishing to the net in style on seven minutes, a three-pointer that helped Mayo into a promising early lead, Galway initially struggling to find the type of rhythm that had Roscommon often vainly chasing shadows in the recent semi-final. Once Joyce’s men did settle, the points flowed, confident two-pointers helping them go eight clear by half-time. The second half was thrilling, Mayo enjoying a fantastic spell in front of the posts early on, Galway’s lead evaporating in a riveting third quarter. The fourth quarter was notable for stand-out moments that ultimately shaped this memorable final. Connor Gleeson prevented a second Mayo goal, superbly parrying Enda Hession’s shot after Aidan O’Shea had parted the Galway defence with an inviting pass. Much for Mayo to rue then, which is not to say that Galway didn’t ultimately deserve to win. They did, just. Joyce’s fluid army are formidable. Leaders abound. They were more clinical on the day, their fielding once again superb, and while Mayo could have won (or drawn) this terrific contest, Galway were marginally the better team.

Sheffield, the ambience as atmospheric now as in every year since our bond first formed. Being honest, hardly any of us who fell in love with snooker in the 1970s or ‘80s watches to the same degree as then. If only I had a euro for every time a peer has told me they barely watch it now, while they still remain nostalgic for that glory era of the sombre-faced Davis, the tormented but electrifying Higgins, and a supporting cast of wonderful characters ranging from the wild, jinxed artistry of Jimmy White to the genial father figure that was Ray Reardon… While the game is now more popular than ever in terms of participation levels worldwide, snooker doesn’t have as many personalities as in its golden era – and we don’t seem to have as much time. So I don’t watch a lot of the snooker-fest when the World Championships come around every April, but I still make every effort to take a ringside (TV) seat for the entire closing session of the final every May Bank Holiday Monday. That’s an important tradition for me, because this is sporting combat, but also sport as art, theatre to cherish. And if I don’t engage with a lot of the live action throughout the tournament, I lap up the nostalgiatinted segments the BBC creatives come up with each year, ranging from highlights packages to flashbacks of memorable breaks to reflective interviews with players who captivated us in the past. A particularly enjoyable film this week saw Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor seated in a cinema – complete with popcorn and soft drinks – where they reviewed the final frame of their epic 1985 world final on the big screen. Each new World Championship is about the top players of today, about the 17-day odyssey that culminates in a champion being crowned. But the tournament is also one big reunion, them and us, the snooker family drawn together again for a nostalgia-filled catch-up. The presence of the stars of yesteryear ensures that the World Championships remain special to us. The golden era may be gone, but the links with it remain. The present-day commentary teams include our heroes of yesteryear… Hendry, Davis, Taylor, Doherty and others. John Parrott fits in nicely, and of course the event would not be the same without the splendidly entertaining and ever-passionate John Virgo. Each World Championship is about the present, and the future, but also about the past. Snooker celebrates its heritage, pays homage to the late Alex Higgins, never forgets what Terry Griffiths, Cliff Thorburn, Willie Thorne, Kirk Stevens, John Spencer and dozens more meant and mean to us.

This year’s tournament was notable for the fact that veterans John Higgins, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Williams all credibly challenged into the business end, with the outstanding Williams reaching the final at the age of 50 (the oldest ever finalist). My Bank Holiday Monday evening sit-in looked set to be short-lived, with China’s Zhao Xintong needing just one frame to seal the title, but I didn’t doubt the Crucible’s capacity to provide drama. Williams, 17-8 behind in the ‘Best of 35’ final, rallied on Monday night with four magnificent successive frames, before Xintong finally got over the line for a fully deserved victory. There is a beautiful humanity in how the BBC signs off its marathon coverage, the excellent Hazel Irvine summing up in the presence of former greats, Steve Davis now a national treasure, long released from the emotionless public persona he adopted in his playing prime, a quick-witted, charming and unfailingly courteous gentleman revealed. They wrap up from the Crucible, from Sheffield, the confetti floating on to the table, a new champion crowned, the sense of time passing unavoidable. The reunion is over for another year, but the memories (new and revived) are vivid, and the bonds in this family unbreakable.

On Scheffler – and Spieth Normal service resumed on the USPGA Tour last weekend, with world ranked number one player Scottie Scheffler ending his mini-drought by storming to his first win of 2025, finishing on an amazing -31 when winning the CJ Cup Bryan Nelson in Texas (by eight shots). Those who like their sportstars touched by genius will have smiled at the rise up the leaderboard of Jordan Spieth. After a serious career slump, the American has shown signs in recent years that he can perhaps reach the heights of a decade ago again. It’s remarkable to think that Spieth’s three majors were all won by his early 20s (he’s still only 31). Rather like Rory Mcllroy, Spieth can mix the mediocre (even the ridiculous) with fantasy golf. On his day, he is simply magical around the greens. Last Sunday, he rolled back the years and rolled in the putts, shooting a nine under par round of 62 for a fourth-place finish. If he can find some level of consistency, and reduce his tendency to mix basic errors with brilliance, Spieth can thrill the golfing world again.
