What a great weekend! And now, a 5-point plan for the future!
Accident at Work I work for a large multinational, I don’t want to say where. I was recently injured in an accident at my work when my colleague tripped on a loose cable causing the machine I was working on to shut down violently. I was badly injured and I spent over a week in hospital. I will be out of work for several weeks and possibly months as a result. I am now in difficult financial circumstances. Please advise me. Every employer is obliged to provide a safe place of work for his employees. Furthermore, employees are expected to take reasonable care to protect the health and safety of themselves and of other people in the workplace. However, if an employee, whilst acting in the course of his employment negligently causes an accident which injures another then the employer may be considered vicariously liable for that incident. In such circumstances an employer, or his insurers’, may be liable to compensate the injured employee. Employers must have a Safety Statement in place setting out policies and procedures regarding accident prevention. All accidents must be reported to the employer who should in turn investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Witnesses to the incident should also be interviewed. Under the Statute of Limitations one has two years from the date of accident to bring a compensation claim for personal injuries.

I’m drawing up a 5-point Plan. Tell me more… Well, it seems to be all the rage! The people want roadmaps. Plans and roadmaps. That’s what people want! So? So, I’m developing my own 5-point Plan for… life after Covid. What’s in it? Well, point 1 is MAKE A PLAN. And point 2? I’m still working on point 1. Oh dear. Not going great, is it?

I can’t deal with those show-offs making such daft noises! Be kind! They’re up and coming singers! Not the contestants! I’m talking about Marty Whelan and Graham Norton, the commentators! Oh they’re good fun!
So, Salthill… Yeah, disappointing! We’re struggling in the league…zero from two games. Yeah, we’re just like the UK at the moment… Huh? In the Eurovision…nul points! Oh well…we’re still fully behind the Rossies… Absolutely! We’re backing Anthony and the boys all the way…roll on the championship! Who have we next in the league? Eh…Kerry, this Sunday in the Hyde! Hey, are you still there? Gotta go! Why? I’m off to draw up another 5-point Plan, an emergency one! What’s IT called? HOW TO STOP DAVID CLIFFORD!

Lough Funshinagh overflow < DAN DOONER
Works to install an emergency overflow pipe from Lough Funshinagh to the River Shannon to prevent the immediate risk of flooding have been given the go ahead by Minister of State for the Office of Public Works Patrick O’Donovan. In response to a letter received on Wednesday evening last (May 19th) from the Chief Executive of Roscommon County Council, Eugene Cummins, the
Minister of State confirmed that the OPW would supply the resources requested so that works can commence without delay. Speaking to Mr. Cummins on Wednesday evening last, Deputy O’Donovan reiterated his support for the course of action he has taken. “I promised full Government support in January to Roscommon County Council to help avert damage from potential flood victims, and, having received the urgent appeal for
assistance, I have instructed the OPW to provide whatever resources are required in terms of labour or equipment to facilitate the Council’s preventive flood mitigation works,” the Minister of State said. Roscommon County Council’s decision to intervene is prompted by recent reports and a Hydrological Update on Lough Funshinagh which predict flooding levels next winter to exceed previous records. The Roscommon County
Council Chief Executive has now signed an order to commence the works, which are expected to be completed this summer. The announcement was warmly welcomed across the county and beyond this week with Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council and Rahara resident, Cllr. It’s great news and very well done to all involved,” he said. Local resident, Padraig Beattie, whose home is at immediate risk of flooding, said it was fantastic news and he now hoped works could be completed as quickly as possible. “Everyone around here is much happier because we just didn’t know what we’d do next winter or whether some of the land and homes would still be here. There was fear and a feeling that you’re not safe in your own home. It’s hard to do jobs around the yard because you don’t know if it will be there next year,” he said. Mr. Beattie also supported calls for local farmers to be given some form of compensation. Thankfully, there was no damage done to the property next to Mr. Beattie’s, which is home to Edward John and Teresa Beattie, a couple in their 80s. Padraig said it was hoped the couple could move back home soon after being forced to leave the residence in February due to rising water levels. Meanwhile, Geraldine Murray, the Secretary of the Lough Funshinagh Flood Crisis Committee welcomed the announcement on behalf of the group and said that
without immediate intervention the floods would destroy more homes, farmyards, lands, and dwellings. Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice said common sense had finally prevailed and the overflow would bring “peace of mind” for local residents. “Common sense has finally prevailed in this scenario…Thankfully, everyone is now singing from the same hymn sheet and work can get underway as soon as possible,” he said. Deputy Fitzmaurice paid tribute to Deputy O’Donovan and his predecessor Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran as well as former councillor Ivan Connaughton and local resident Sinéad Beattie who had lobbied for a solution. Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan thanked Deputy O’Donovan for his support at “such a critical juncture” while Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy described it as “a massive step forward” thanks to the work of Council Chief Executive Eugene Cummins and local councillors. Meanwhile, Roscommon IFA Chairman, Jim O’Connor, thanked local political representatives and Roscommon County Council staff for all their work and praised the “enormous community spirit and support” shown by local residents.

There was widespread praise for Roscommon County Council Chief Executive Eugene Cummins and his management team at Monday’s monthly meeting of the local authority following the news that an overflow pipe would be installed at Lough Funshinagh near Rahara. Members congratulated Mr. Cummins and executive and engineering staff following the Chief Executive’s intervention on behalf of local residents to the Minister of State for Public Works Patrick O’Donovan. Cllr. John Keogh thanked the CEO for his efforts while Cathaoirleach Laurence Fallon described the announcement as “excellent news” but warned a lot of work still needed to be done. Cllr. Tony Ward proposed the County Council write to the Minister of Agriculture Charlie McConalogue and Minister of Finance Paschal Donohoe to seek financial support for those farmers and landowners affected. Cllr. John Naughten said it was an excellent result for the area and supported Cllr. Ward on his proposal. Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice said it was good to know the works had the backing of Government while Cllr. Tom Crosby said it was the “common sense approach” before calling into question the Special Area of Conservation status afforded the lake which has been an obsta-
cle to emergency works in the past. “I could never see why the State was putting creepy-crawlies before people. I would always put people before creepy-crawlies! It’s a scandal that as a country we entertain this and we need to cop ourselves on,” he said. Cllr. Nigel Dineen thanked Chief Executive Eugene Cummins for “flexing his muscles” and standing up for the people of the county. Cllr. Donal Kilduff, meanwhile, said all members had lobbied on this issue equally and no individual councillor should be rising up to take sole credit. Cllr. Orla Leyden commended the Chief Executive for his leadership and also praised Directors of Services, Shane Tiernan and John Mockler as well as Cathaoirleach Laurence Fallon. The newest member of the Chamber, Cllr. Emer Kelly, paid tribute to fellow members and the executive. Chief Executive Eugene Cummins thanked members for their vote of confidence. “I know all of you knew what needed to be done…Thank you for holding steady and not having knee-jerk reactions to hare-brained schemes. I know no more than ourselves (executive), you put up with a few strange phone calls and emails and the odd abusive email. For your maturity and intelligence and for not running away, I thank you,” he said.

paul@roscommonpeople.ie GAAGO. It was a very disappointing performance by Roscommon. Sadly, the Premier League season is over. I’m not sure about the choice of Pep as Manager of the Year. I trust that Marcelo Bielsa (Leeds) and Brendan Rodgers (Leicester) were hot on his heels! Honourable mention also to David Moyes (West Ham). I am aware that Manchester United fans might be chanting their own version of Ole Ole Ole by the time you read this.
Saturday All my adult life, my favourite ‘Small crowd at a match’ story hasn’t been in doubt – until now! One of the glamour football clubs in England had modest beginnings in the first half of the 20th century. They were only getting a few dozen fans at their home games. One Saturday, a supporter rang the club to check the kick-off time. The person who answered the phone, reflecting how anxious they were to get fans in, responded: “What time can you get here at?” Today, I came across an even better ‘Small crowd at a match’ anecdote. On the BBC website, colourful ex-manager Barry Fry fondly recalled his friend George Best guesting in two games for lower league minnows Dunstable United (where Fry was manager). Best’s gesture was a financial windfall for the club, with 10,000 people coming out to see the superstar, compared with usual attendances of “34 and 43”. Barry Fry: “Attendances were so small, rather than announcing the team changes to the crowd, we’d announce the crowd changes to the team!”

Most of my adult life, I’ve been a regular caller to the Abbey Hotel in Roscommon. The great old building oozes character and charm. Usually I’m there for lunch or to attend a function or meeting. Today is different. The hotel is currently serving as Roscommon’s Vaccination Centre. In the fightback against Covid in Roscommon, this is Jab Central. Now I’ve got the call. From my arrival at 10.30 this morning to my departure at 11.05, the whole experience is noteworthy for being extremely well organised, the process conducted by friendly and professional personnel. After the first of a number of checks (as to my identity, any recent vaccine history, etc.) I park in the familiar carpark. It’s all quite strange. Around me, people sit in their cars, face coverings in place, eyes on their phones/ watches. ‘Be on time, but do not arrive more than five minutes before your appointment’ the text had warned. It’s obvious that everyone’s working on getting this timing challenge just right! I’ve been to the Abbey Hotel for Dinner Dances, weddings, political rallies, awards ceremonies, book launches, every type of function you could imagine. We’ve all been there for jigs and jibes and jugs (i.e. dances, political meetings, coffee breaks), now it’s all about jabs. I reach a small marquee where those of us

being vaccinated today will queue before entering the hotel/vaccination centre. After a few routine (but important) questions from one of two receptionists, I’m directed into what is normally the Abbey Hotel function room, now transformed into a vaccination centre with several cubicles. It’s busy, but all is running very smoothly. The friendly vaccinator who administers the jab to me chats about the weather and the vaccine roll-out. Then it’s over to an observation zone. I recognise it from a previous life, when it was the area in front of the bar counter in the Abbey function room. Where now those heady nights when you might queue for a drink there, while on the dancefloor below, your neighbours forfeited their inhibitions under the spell of a band belting out Sweet Caroline, or maybe Amarilo itself? I digress. In the observation zone, the people who have just been vaccinated are advised to sit for fifteen minutes or so. As you sit, with a growing sense of satisfaction at having received Jab One, members of the ‘vaccination team’ approach with information leaflets and advice on possible sideeffects. One such lady came over to me. What she said: “Just take it easy, don’t over-exert yourself today”. What I heard: “Put your feet up and spend the rest of the day watching football and golf”. As I sat there, surrounded by maybe fifteen people, a thought struck me. Just being in close proximity to others again felt strange. I have no
doubt that it will take time for people to readapt to engaging with other humans. When I got the nod, confirming that I could return to the outside world, I exited, stage right. I thought of nights when hundreds of people socialised together in this landmark ballroom, now dotted with vaccination booths to facilitate an emergency response to a worldwide crisis. As I stepped out of that familiar social hub, I could almost hear echoes of past renditions of ‘Living on a Prayer’ or ‘My Way’. That was then, this is now. Back in the carpark, there were new arrivals, the drivers eyeing their phones as they prepared to perfectly time their own walk to the jab – and its promise of better times.

Brief reflections on a busy sporting weekend: The highlight for most sports’ enthusiasts had to be a wonderful US PGA Championship, won by the remarkable Phil Mickelson. At 50, he becomes the oldest Major Champion in history. Sunday’s final round provided stunning TV viewing as the immensely charismatic Mickelson triumphed over both the rest of the field and time itself. There were amazing scenes as thousands of fans surrounded ‘Big Phil’ as he approached the 18th green. Ireland’s Padraig Harrington and Shane Lowry covered themselves in glory too. I listened to the first half of the Galway-Roscommon game on the radio and saw the second half on
At last, like someone ruefully joining a party late, before then making the effort to catch up on lost time, I’ve managed to binge on the odd Netflix series. I’ve ‘created’ the available time by taking a break from the nightly current affairs ‘blah blah’ on TV. There’s no need to dance every night to the invariably grim mood music of Prime Time, The Tonight Show, etc. Currently, I’m catching up on The Last Dance, the critically acclaimed documentary series on Michael Jordan, the Chicago Bulls, and an enthralling era in the history of the NBA. The documentary benefits from the exclusive footage from a film crew that had extraordinary access to the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s. Present-day interviews with many of the major players of that golden era completes a dream documentary formula. It actually took me a while to warm to The Last Dance, but I stuck with it, and am now enjoying the series. Still, I actually enjoyed another Netflix sports’ documentary more, i.e. Sunderland ‘Til I Die. It very powerfully captures the raw beauty of the bond between football fans and their club. Sunderland ‘Til I Die is a beautifully made series (2018-2020) which documents the fall and fall of Sunderland Football Club. There is remarkable behind the scenes access. Just how much the local football club means to the ordinary, working class people of English cities and towns is brilliantly portrayed. It’s a superbly produced, poignant and at times heartbreaking insight into the passions football stirs, the extraordinary bond between a city and a club that is struggling to fulfill the hopes and dreams of its fans. Savouring some of these delights on Netflix, I’m happy just now to break long-held habits by missing out on the relentless current affairs blah blah, starring Stephen Donnelly, Thomas Byrne, Leo Varadkar, Róisín Shortall and others, with a supporting cast (in these times) of celebrity scientists. We can’t take much more nightly pandemic talk, backed up by similar talk-fests on the morning radio shows! Hopefully The Last Dance of Covid is imminent.

Man (40s) charged following growhouse discovery A man in his early forties has been charged following the seizure of cannabis plants and the discovery of a sophisticated growhouse in Castleplunkett on Saturday morning last. At approximately 10.30 am, Gardaí searched a residential property in
the area and during the course of the search suspected cannabis plants were recovered along with a quantity of cannabis. The value of the cannabis plants recovered was approximately €56,800 and Gardaí also seized approximate-
ly €20,000 worth of cannabis. A man was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged in relation to the incident. He was released on bail and is due to appear before Castlerea District Court on Friday, June 18th. Investigations are continuing.
newsbriefs ‘Dire’ footpaths to be repaired – McDermott Cllr. Marty McDermott has thanked Roscommon County Council officials for “their favourable response” to his call for inadequate footpaths at Racecourse Road, Roscommon to be repaired. At a recent meeting of Roscommon Municipal District, Cllr. McDermott (Fianna Fáil) drew attention to this issue. He says the footpaths at Racecourse Road (on both sides) are in “a dire condition”. He has received a favourable response to his representations and works will be carried out. Cllr. McDermott says that footpaths at Cloonbrackna Estate in Roscommon town will also be repaired, along with some weeding and general tidying. Cllr. McDermott commended the Council for its speedy response, which included an engineer inspecting the locations at Racecourse Road and Cloonbrackna Estate. He has also raised concerns over overgrown trees behind the Church of Ireland building at Church Street. He has informed the Roscommon People that the Council has agreed to deal with this issue in September when it’s “tree-cutting season”.
Gardaí investigate Knockcroghery burglary Roscommon Gardaí are currently investigating a burglary that occurred at a residence in the Knockcroghery area on Friday night last (21st) where a number of items were taken. It is understood that an 8x5 trailer, lawnmower, transformer and power tools were taken in the burglary which occurred between 12 midnight on Friday and 6 am on Saturday morning. Gardaí have confirmed that a number of items were taken from the property and that investigations are ongoing.
Wind Turbine Action Group to meet local TDs < DAN DOONER
Members of the Kilcash Wind Turbine Action Group are set to meet with local TDs and councillors this evening (Thursday) to voice their anger at the proposed development of a wind turbine near Knockcroghery. Residents in Kilcash, Farbreagues and other communities in the area have been left shocked by plans to develop a 150-metre wind turbine close to local homes. The action group has been set up to counter what residents describe as: “a blatant disregard of their community” by the company behind the proposed development, Natural Forces Renewable Energy Ltd. The renewable energy company applied to Roscommon County Council on April 30th for planning for the construction of one 4.2MW wind turbine with overall tip height of up to 150m; the construction of the wind turbine foundation, hard standing and assembly area; provision of site entrance and access track within site; construction of a 20KV substation and underground electrical cable and all associated works at Kilcash, close to Knockcroghery. The closing date for submissions is June 3rd with the local authority set to make a decision on the application on June 24th. The PRO of the residents’ group, Brian Kearney, said no consultations had taken
place with local homeowners prior to the planning application being submitted. “This wind turbine is set to be 150 metres high, which is 30 metres higher than The Spire in Dublin. There was no communication with Natural Forces Renewable Energy before the application was submitted,” he said. Mr. Kearney said two wind turbines are already in place on Skrine Hill but this new turbine would create more issues for local residents as well as impacting on the local environment and surrounds. “It’s amazing what’s on our doorstep in terms of local wildlife and flora and we also have six scenic views, as identified by Roscommon County Council in this area. This development will have a severe impact on all of this, not to mention the associated health concerns for local residents,” he said. Mr. Kearney said the group had “hit the ground running” in recent days and support has been forthcoming from other local communities as well as public representatives. He said the committee would be making their feelings known to the local TDs this evening as they look to continue their opposition to the plans. The group is appealing to people to support them by following their progress on social media as well as signing an online petition opposing the planned development.

COMMUNITY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMME 2021 The Community Enhancement Programme (CEP) offers funding to not-forprofit community groups and communities in Co. Roscommon to enhance facilities for a disadvantaged area/group, or a group/facility providing services to the disadvantaged as identified in the Roscommon LECP. The Department of Rural and Community Development provide the funding which will be administered through Roscommon LCDC and the Community and Enterprise section of Roscommon County Council. There are two strands to the CEP: Strand A (Small scale grant of €1,000 or less): Approximately 40 projects to the value of €1,000 per project will be funded. Strand B (Grant in excess of €1,000): Approximately €93,000 will be available to grants in excess of €1,000. This iteration of the CEP will provide: • Grants towards projects or equipment enhancing facilities (similar to previous years) and • One-off grants towards costs associated with reopening of a facility or the sustainability of a facility. The following provides a non-exhaustive list of projects that could receive funding under the programme: e.g. Development/renovation of community centres, Once off maintenance of premises, Community amenities, Development of youth clubs or facilities, Development of sports/recreation facilities, Improvements to town parks and common areas and spaces, CCTV equipment, Public realm improvements, Streetscaping, Development of play/ recreation spaces, Energy efficiency type projects, Purchase of equipment, Adaptations or equipment needed as a result of COVID-19. US President Joe Biden has written a letter of support to Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation.
‘Wolfwalkers’ wins big at Irish Animation Awards The Oscar-nominated film Wolfwalkers from Kilkenny studio Cartoon Saloon, which was co-founded by Boyle native Paul Young, was the big winner in this year’s Irish Animation Awards on Friday last (21st). The animation came away with four awards in total, including Best Irish Feature or Special, in the awards ceremony which was broadcast live and online and hosted by Irish TV and radio star, Baz Ashmawy. Cartoon Saloon also picked up two awards for their animated kids series, Dorg Van Dango, while Magic Light Pictures and Giant Animation’s BBC feature Zog and the Flying Doctors picked up an award for Best Storyboarding. The winner of the Best Animated Short Film was Her Song, which portrayed the harrowing story of the Mother and Baby Homes and was featured on RTÉ’s The Late Late Show in January. The awards this year featured four new categories, including Best Storyboarding, Best Editing, Best Student Film and Best New Irish IP. Winners of each category received a statuette designed by animator, filmmaker and teacher Eimhin McNamara. The statuette resembles a Phenakistoscope which was an early animation device used to create an illusion of motion.

of Mayo you help will be treated with the utmost decency and humanity during their time of greatest need. You understand what it means to love and care for your neighbour as yourself. I knew this was true when I turned the sod in 2017 – created as an act of love by the community, for the community. I also know my cousin, Laurita, dedicated herself to realize the vision of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice, and I am grateful for all of your efforts. “It is an honor that my son Beau’s soul lives in the fabric

Roscommon Arts Centre’s virtual programme for schools After a challenging school year for both teachers and students, Roscommon Arts Centre has launched its Kaleidoscope School Edition, which aims to connect with schoolchildren through a series of workshops and events. Funded by the Arts Council of Ireland, Kaleidoscope will be delivered by professional artists and practitioners from May 26th to June 18th. It caters for junior classes through to sixth class and will be delivered via Zoom straight into the classrooms. The programme includes an Animal Mash Up and Creature
Crashes with Olivia Golden. Olivia illustrated a book called ‘Woggleburn Creek’, where the creatures are all mash ups of existing creatures. Using this book as her starting point, students are invited to challenge Olivia to create new creatures, before embarking on their own fabulous creations! There will also be Animal Grooves with Monica Muñoz where dancer Monica has created a digital dance series exploring movement through the animal world. Children will be encouraged to dance, imagine and look
close at living creatures from four different environments: the jungle, the sea, the forest and the garden and ask what are the animals within you? If your classroom is keen to explore astronomy and storytelling, then join the brilliant SuperPaua and their Stargazing and Storytelling workshop. Kerrane raises Ballaghaderreen Public Realm Enhancement concerns in the Dáil < DAN DOONER
Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane raised concerns for the future of businesses in Ballaghaderreen if proposed Public Realm Enhancement plans go ahead in the town in the Dáil on Tuesday. Speaking during questions to the Minister for Rural Development Heather Humphreys, Deputy Kerrane said: “This plan flies in the face of schemes like the ‘Town & Village Renewal Scheme’, which puts an emphasis on engagement and consultation with property owners on plans for town centres. “This involves €3 million funding, which is badly needed investment for Ballaghaderreen, but I can guarantee if you asked the people of Ballaghaderreen planting twenty trees and tiny green areas in The Square wouldn’t be top of the list. “This funding could be put to much better use – to generate job creation, support the reestablishment of childcare services, improve public transport links, get the remote working hub up and running and improve road safety – especially on Pound Street, which my colleague Cllr. Michael Mulligan has consistently sought.
“Plans should be made in consultation with those living and working on the Square in Ballaghaderreen, and while the plans might look nice to some, this risks huge damage to livelihoods”. Ballaghaderreen-based Councillor Michael Mulligan also raised his concerns regarding the plan this week. “If these plans go ahead as proposed, businesses will close in Ballaghaderreen. There is no doubt in my mind of this. “The proposed plans show the removal of parking on The Square, to be replaced with trees and benches – a drop from 67 car parking spaces to 11. This will not only impact customer parking but also deliveries, due to a lack of loading bays outside businesses. People will simply go elsewhere to shop. “Ballaghaderreen has suffered immeasurably since the last recession. Covid-19 has added to this, and many businesses have struggled in the last year especially. They are just beginning to open up again – some for the first time in many months – and plans like this will do nothing to support businesses. “We are told these plans are part of the green agenda. If this is the green agenda, then rural towns will not survive,” he concluded.
Murphy welcomes vacant homes funding Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has welcomed the news that over one hundred vacant local authority homes in Roscommon and Galway will be refurbished and re-let in 2021 with a total funding allocation of over €1.6 million. Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien
TD, recently announced another voids programme for 2021 which will see his Department provide funding for the refurbishment and re-letting of approximately 3,000 social homes this year throughout the country. “A breakdown of the figures shows that funding has been allocated in
County Galway for sixty standard units at €11,000 per unit, and seven non standard units at €50,000, a total of over €1 million. In County Roscommon, funding of €596,000 has been allocated which includes thirty-six standard units at €11,000 each, and four non-standard units at €50,000, so the total investment
for Counties Roscommon and Galway is over €1.6 million,” said Senator Murphy. “It is most welcome that the Department is now in a position to approve applications so that local authorities can get to work in bringing vacant social housing properties back into use”.
New lighting for Ballinagard Road Good news too for residents in Cloverhill, Fourmilehouse Local residents are being assured that ‘light is being shed’ on their safety concerns with news that three projects have been approved by Roscommon County Council. In a press statement issued to the Roscommon People, Cllr. Marty McDermott has welcomed confirmation that lights are to be installed at locations in Roscommon town, Cloverhill and Fourmilehouse. 21 lights are to be provided at Ballinagard Road, Roscommon town. Cllr. McDermott (Fianna Fáil) says the urgent need for lighting in that area had been raised with him a number of times by residents citing safety concerns. “I recently met with local families for a socially distanced inspection of the area and I then conveyed to the Council how
serious the situation is” he said. Cllr. McDermott has now confirmed that 21 new lights will be provided along a route from the Golf Links Road to Ballinagard Road. Cllr. McDermott has also confirmed that, following his representations, lighting is to be provided at Cloverhill Church, Oran. New road markings will also be provided at the junction at Cloverhill Church. He has also expressed delight that five new lights will be provided for a stretch or road in Fourmilehouse. “The lights will be in place from the road that leads to the GAA pitch up to the turn in for Fourmilehouse Church”. This, he said, is a much-needed development which will be welcomed by local residents. Cllr. McDermott said that
these projects will proceed within the next 2-3 weeks. He extended thanks to “the relevant engineers” and Roscommon County Council for the positive response to his representations. Meanwhile, local Independent TD Denis Naughten has welcomed the announcement after raising the issue with the local authority. “I have now been informed that Roscommon County Council has received funding to provide 21 additional public lights at Ballinagard Road which will significantly improve lighting for those living in the area. “The completion of the final section of lighting addresses a very serious safety hazard on the narrow part of the Ballinagard road particularly during the dark evenings,” he said.
newsbriefs Lorry crashes through level crossing Iarnród Éireann has been forced to issue a safety appeal after releasing footage of a lorry crashing through a railway level crossing at Bellacagher, Co. Roscommon on Friday last. The incident occurred as the 7.35 am Dublin Heuston to Westport train was approaching the crossing. A statement from Iarnród Éireann said the train was at a “safe braking distance” from the gates at the time of the collision but the service was delayed for an hour. There was extensive damage caused to one barrier on either side of the road and personnel had to be sent to ensure that trains could safely pass.
Waldron calls on Government to decentralise Independent Cllr. Anthony Waldron called on the Government to implement the decentralisation plan announced in 2003, which promised 230 jobs for Roscommon town. Cllr. Waldron said the project was completed in 2011 despite being oversubscribed in County Roscommon, with just 80 civil servants taking up positions. “I am appealing to Minister Darragh O’Brien to fully implement the decision taken in 2003 and it is in the national interest to do so and it would be a major boost to County Roscommon. “I am proposing that we write to Minister O’Brien who has responsibility in this area and we send copies to the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and the Oireachtas members in the county”.
Dolan welcomes Tidy Towns funding The return of the Supervalu Tidy Towns Competition will be a huge boost to communities across Co. Roscommon, Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan has said. Twenty-three Tidy Town Groups in Roscommon have now been awarded grants of up to €1,000 under the Tidy Towns Fund announced by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys. Senator Dolan said, “The return of the Supervalu Tidy Towns Competition will be a huge boost to communities across Co. Roscommon, many of whom have kept up the great work throughout the pandemic to keep their neighbourhoods clean, despite the cancellation of the competition due to Covid.”
EirGrid briefs Council on future of electricity EirGrid’s Chief Innovation and Planning Officer Liam Ryan briefed members of Roscommon County Council at Monday’s monthly meeting on the company’s plans to transform Ireland’s electricity system. In March, the company along with Minister Eamon Ryan, launched the ‘Shaping Our Electricity Future’ initiative to redevelop the Irish grid in order to manage 70% of Ireland’s electricity coming from renewable sources by 2030. It is now seeking feedback as part of a 14-week nationwide public consultation.

A long journey…but there’s light at the end of the tunnel! Our man Frank on a return to some normality, getting vaccinated, the end of Eurovision ‘magic’, and hope for ageing golfers everywhere… It’s exactly six minutes past four on Friday evening, and I am close to the
city centre in Dublin, just about to head west. As it’s not yet rush hour, I am fairly confident that we will be out on the open road in no time, and should be home in little more than the usual two hours or so. Traffic seemed to be a little heavy, but not sufficient to give any cause for concern…little did I know that it would take a full hour and a half for us to get as far as the Spa Hotel in Lucan! While things improved a little af-
ter that, it was just after eight in the evening before I made it back to the comfort of my own armchair – albeit with a short pit stop for food in Kinnegad. Many times down through the years when writing this column, I have talked about how lucky we are to live ‘out in the country’, where the only traffic jam is caused by some livestock crossing the road or getting caught behind a slow moving tractor (al-
most a thing of the past) but, at the very worst, you will only be held up for a few minutes before continuing on your merry way. While I have not changed my views on the benefits of a peaceful rural existence, in a funny way the extremely heavy Dublin traffic was nearly a welcome sight, as it proved once and for all that we, as a nation, are beginning to see the light at the end of a very long Covid-19 tunnel and are
Eurovision magic is long gone Back in 1970, I was in my second year in Cistercian College, Roscrea and to our great delight, we were allowed to watch the Eurovision Song Contest. We (a couple of hundred of us) crowded into the recreation hall, where there was a single black and white television set up. Of course, being one of the smallest lads in the school, I couldn’t see anything. However there was huge universal delight when a beautiful little slip of a girl, Dana, a schoolgirl from Derry, sang her way into the hearts of the nation while winning the Eurovision title with what is still an iconic song – ‘All Kinds of Everything’. If memory serves me right, we were all let off the following evening’s study in celebration. That was the start of an Irish love affair with Eurovision, which lasted for a very long time. During those years we became the most successful Eurovision nation of all time, winning the contest several times, and producing songs like ‘What’s Another Year’ and ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids’, which will forever last the test of time. I am well aware that there are still many people in Ireland who are completely bonkers about the ‘Song Contest’, but for me, the magic is long gone. The truth is that I don’t remember the last time I actually watched it, or even know who won it. This year’s contest took place last Saturday night. I didn’t watch it and would’ve had

no idea who won were it not for the storm that broke out over claims that the lead singer of the winning Italian rock group (Maneskin) was seen taking drugs after their big win. The singer, Damiano David, denied taking
any drugs and has since passed a drugs test. However, on the basis that in the world of entertainment ‘no publicity is bad publicity’, I would think they may be secretly delighted with the international coverage. It certainly had an effect on me, as in the normal run of things, I would never have heard of Damiano and his Maneskin colleagues, and their big win on Saturday night would’ve gone right over my head. I don’t imagine it’s much use to them, but at least I now know they are the champions of Eurovision, even if their win was slightly overshadowed by the unsubstantiated allegations. As for Ireland, once again we failed to get past the semi-finals, so you’d have to wonder where we go from here. The Italians must be delighted to have won it with Maneskin after such a tough run with Covid-19. The country, I’m sure, was glad to have any type of good news to celebrate. Sadly, Sunday’s cable car disaster in the Italian Alps has already put paid to any national euphoria, and the death toll of fourteen people (including at least one child) has seen the country experience yet another period of mourning. I don’t know the cause of the tragic accident but it’s hugely traumatic just as tourism is beginning to open up again in Italy. Whatever the cause, it really is a terrible disaster, and my heart goes out to all of those who have been affected.
Second jab as sport returns to Creggs Saturday morning was a morning I had looked forward to for more than a year: I was bound for Roscommon town where I was to receive my second vaccination. As I drove through my own village of Creggs, right before my eyes there was another example of returning normality – the village was alive with what seemed like hundreds of children taking part in underage rugby. The coaches were putting them through their paces and some of the children’s parents are watching on, while a few of the more
energetic ones are getting in their own exercise on the beautiful walkway that the rugby club has installed. I received jab number two, and I have to admit that despite the warning that it would be another week before it would be fully effective, and that there was a reasonable possibility of a slightly adverse reaction, I was absolutely delighted to have got it. I found there was a spring in my step (mind you it could do with one) as I made my way home. As it happened, I had no prob-
lem at all with the vaccine and on Saturday evening I watched on as our Creggs footballers had a no-contact training session (again in the rugby club as the GAA pitch is currently being renovated). Once again, it was as if a cloud had lifted around the place. The St. Ciaran’s’ camogie team was also training there, and on Sunday morning the Glinsk men and women as well as the St. Ciaran’s’ ladies footballers were all out training too. It was great to see. I’m obviously not a doctor or
a member of NPHET but it still baffles me how anyone benefitted from having all the pitches in the country lying idle while multi-national supermarkets had any amount of customers going through their doors. However, it’s great that the youth (and some not so youthful) can get out exercising again. Hopefully it won’t be too long until we stand on the side of a pitch, roaring encouragement at our players – I promise not to shout abuse at any ref this year, but don’t tell them that just yet!
heading, at long last, back to some type of normality. The last time I was in Dublin was during Level Five lockdown. I had to go up for a medical appointment, and there was literally no traffic at all on the motorway. It just seemed so unusual to see the normally bustling road so quiet. Thankfully, it was a very different story on Friday evening last; it was almost as if Covid had never happened.

Sport played a big part in the weekend just gone and for me, two events stood out. The first was the fantastic victory by 50-yearold Phil Mickelson, who became the oldest ever winner of a golfing Major when he won the PGA Championship on Sunday evening, thereby winning his sixth Major title. The fantastic top four finishes of Padraig Harrington and Shane Lowry were also very commendable and hugely impressive from an Irish point of view, but big Phil was a popular winner and a great role model for the older golfer. I can’t wait to get back on the course and see if his achievement will inspire me; somehow I doubt it, but you can only live in hope! The other big event was the Kerry and Dublin National Football League match. Even though The Kingdom did well to get a draw at the finish, let no one be fooled, the ease with which the Dubs cut open the Kerry defence was more than ominous, and their four goals were scored so easily that it would not augur well for the Munster men should they meet again later in the year. As for Galway, despite my huge forebodings, they managed to put one over on the Rossies, so that was something. However, I am not convinced by them, and still rate Mayo and Roscommon as the two top teams in Connacht. July 4th in the Hyde will tell a tale, and will surely be a battle royal, but on all the evidence so far, it still looks to me like the Dubs will be in ‘Seventh Heaven’ come the end of the year. ‘Till next week, bye for now

Miriam’s MUSINGS Deirdre Morley – How did they miss those red flags? Words of wit and wisdom with MIRIAM KERINS
Deirdre Morley was found not guilty, by reason of insanity, of committing the most unfathomable crime of killing her three precious babies, Conor (9), Darragh (7), and Carla (3) in their own home – a place where they should have been safe. As a mother, the details of this case have left me not just heartbroken, they’ve also left me asking many questions, which are…why did Deirdre Morley, who by all accounts was an excellent mother, have to suffer to such an extent she believed her babies were ‘doomed’? Why did this seemingly decent and good woman’s mental health issues develop into something so sinister; so devastatingly dark, her anxieties regarding her abilities to parent led to her three innocent and beautiful babies’ lives being cruelly snuffed out? What is going wrong with our country’s mental health care facilities that a person’s depressive illness evolves to the extent they experience delusions and develop a psychosis so disturbing, they harm the people they love and cherish most in this world? We all experience anxiety, indeed, as parents we all second-guess ourselves. I know I did. I still do. But that’s fine. Anxiety is natural, it’s
challenging, it’s motivating and it’s vital in so much it helps us identify and respond to situations we view as being dangerous. But devastatingly, there is a darker side to anxiety, one which is persistent and one which can cause the sufferer to experience an emotional torture so damaging it can lead to delusions and hallucinations that seriously impair our judgements. I’m not a mental health expert, but I am assuming this is perhaps what occurred when Ms. Morley. The children’s devastated dad Andrew McGinley has said his wife’s not guilty ruling was “probably the right verdict”. Even though I’m at odds with the jury’s decision, and I’m sobbing whilst writing this, I find I have to agree with him. What other conclusion could one arrive at? I’m really glad I wasn’t a member of that jury. According to reports, Ms. Morley ‘could be released from the Central Mental Hospital within a year’, with an online article on irishtimes.com saying this is the conclusion of ‘sources familiar with the case and her treatment.’ Be that as it may, but given the fact three children lost their lives, I have to ask why her period of rehabilitation could be so short.
I fully understand, and I’m glad, that when a person is placed on remand in the CMH, they’re not treated as a prisoner, rather as a patient. After all, it’s only right and proper that the purpose of this facility is to treat and rehabilitate, as oppose to punish. Indeed, if a review board decides a patient is well enough to re-enter society, then of course they would be obliged to release them, as is their right. This is especially so if the patient is responding well to treatment. In this instance it seems that, given Ms. Morley has now received the diagnosis she needed, and is in receipt of the treatment she deserves, i.e. ‘anti-psychotic medication’ which, according to the online Irish Times article has seen her ‘condition improved considerably,’ I’ve no doubt she’s now on the road to recovery. Taking all of the above into consideration readers, I have to ask how a situation could occur whereby – allegedly – a seriously mentally ill mother, in a situation where she became so detached from reality, could rob her children of their future, and their father of his entire family. I mean, this tragedy has not only left me feeling deeply disturbed, it has left me fuming because it’s clear, in Ms.
Morley’s case, a series of red flags were catastrophically missed. How many more innocent lives must be lost before people who are suffering, nay drowning in the depths of their own despair, are offered the medication which Deirdre Morley herself allegedly describes as being ‘a wonder drug,’ acknowledging ‘if only I had had this last week, things would have been different’. Everyone has their own way of dealing with heartbreak and loss, everyone’s ability to forgive and the timeframe by which they deal with their trauma depends on their own natural processes. This process differs depending on the severity of an individual’s loss. Personally, I think the loss of your precious children is the worst stressor any parent can go through, for the simple reason they’ve not just lost the little angel they loved, they’ve lost their entire future with them. The lives and the futures of Andrew McGinley and Deirdre Morley have been changed forever. As parents, they were the architects of their children’s universe; a universe that came crashing down the very second their lives were taken. May the children’s little souls rest in peace.
Put your own house in order before you criticise others, Minister Donnelly! It appears Health Minister Stephen Donnelly is finding it difficult to think before he speaks! This is the only conclusion I can arrive at given his ridiculous and, it must be said, injurious comment regarding his assumption that certain members of the legal profession would be ‘licking their lips’ at the prospect of generating lots of business from those allegedly affected by the recent HSE cyber-attack. We all know someone who has an impressive IQ, yet, when it comes to basic common sense, we find them to be seriously lacking, and that’s grand. However, I have to say I didn’t expect this level of empty-headedness from a Government Minister. Sure why shouldn’t any legal firm, if they so choose, advertise their professional services to taxpayers who may, without their consent, have had their most personal and private details published online for all to see? Isn’t it the public’s legal and human right to seek advice regarding compensation? I think so, even if Mr. Donnelly allegedly doesn’t see it that way. While of course there’s overwhelming support for the Government’s ‘we will not pay a ransom’ stance, this criminal attack has highlighted a major vulnerability in our HSE’s systems, due to what is allegedly down to their use of an outdated version of Windows; something which I find to be incredibly negligent. To that end, due to their own sloppiness, our Government and our HSE must ready themselves, not just for a possible barrage of law suits, but they should be prepared to face fines under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) directive for their hit-and-miss data protection strategies. Whichever way you look at it Stephen, this HSE cyber-hack is going to come with a heavy price for us, the poor taxpayers. My advice Minister, in future, do try and make sure your own house is in order before you make a tactless and insulting remark! Health Minister Stephen Donnelly

Model Naomi Campbell has become a mother at 50, announcing her baby’s birth on social media, saying: ‘A beautiful little blessing has chosen me to be her mother’. Now readers, while many of us are struggling with the notion of giving birth at a stage in our lives when our kids should be leaving home, the truth is, the number of births occurring to women aged over 50 years is rising! You see folks, elebrating reaching half a century by giving birth was never part of my own plan. In the interest of full disclosure, I had my tubes tied following the birth of my second daughter, telling those who gasped in shock-horror to mind their own business, and, if, down the line, I felt the urge to hear the pitter-patter of tiny feet, I’d put clogs on my Jack Russell. That shut them up! Oh congratulations to Naomi!

Kepak Athleague launches initiative to boost local biodiversity < DAN DOONER
Kepak Athleague has launched an innovative sustainability research initiative aimed at protecting, enhancing, and promoting biodiversity around the Roscommon based factory. As part of the programme, Kepak has also become home to 100,000 honeybees (Apis mellifera), which are housed in two hives on site in Athleague. In conjunction with the Irish Research Council and Trinity College Dublin, Kepak is funding pioneering research to enhance pollinator diversity through biodiversity-friendly management actions at farm and business level. The research findings will support the development of more evidence-based guidelines for the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan, the national road map that aims to promote and sustain bees, other pollinating insects, and wider biodiversity. As part of the initiative, Kepak has designated ‘biodiversity champions’ at site level who act as ‘citizen scientists’ to conduct and monitor biodiversity. At Kepak Athleague, citizen scientist Nicola Herron has established treatment plots in
short and long grass meadows, wildflower and herb beds are being established in the green areas surrounding the plant. The purpose of the initiative is to investigate what each treatment provides for different types of insects, in terms of flowers through the season; the cost and effort of implementing each treatment; and whether treatments are the same among sites in different parts of the country. Commenting, Nicola Herron, Technical Manager, Meat Division at Kepak Athleague, said: “At Kepak Athleague, we are looking forward to working with Trinity College Dublin and the Irish Research council as part of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan to discover which management actions we can take to help local biodiversity. We are hoping that the work done here will have a positive impact on local biodiversity in Roscommon as part of wider All-Ireland approach. “Bees are the most important pollinator of crops and native plant species in Ireland. A recent study found that bees are worth €53 million a year to the economy so they are a key component of our wildlife. We are delighted at Kepak to be playing our part in promoting pollinator activity,” she added.

Minister welcomes buyers back to Roscommon marts Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue welcomed the return of buyers to the rings of livestock marts in Co. Roscommon while adhering to public health guidelines. The Minister paid tribute to marts’ efforts in keeping mart sales going while online. “This is great for our network of marts across the country. Mart managers, their staff as well buyers and sellers of livestock have shown tremendous resilience, agility and resourcefulness over the past 12-months in dealing with the challenges of Covid-19 while continuing to trade so seamlessly. “I know the famers and mart managers in Elphin, Roscommon Town and Castlerea are all delighted to return to the rings,” he said. “I’m convinced the efforts of farmers and marts in recent months, adhering to the Covid-19 measures, has undoubtedly played a role in minimising and reducing the threat of Cov-

id-19 in our communities,” the Minister added. Cattle throughput from January 1st to March 14th was at 94% of the comparable period in 2020. Sheep throughput in the same period was at 100% of the comparable period for 2020. “Livestock mart sales will continue to be a blend of both online and ringside as we move forward. This blended approach, with a
strong online element, has proved to be an excellent way of trading cattle and sheep. “I am urging farmers, buyers and marts to pay particular attention to the public health guidelines as we move forward. We all have our role to play in keeping each other safe and this is as important at the mart as anywhere else,” the Minister concluded.
Castlerea MART WATCH Similar numbers of stock presented for sale last week with prices and trade holding up well despite no improvement in weather conditions. Bullock prices peaked at €1,750 while the heifer ring reported a good clearance aided by better quality stock on offer and increased Northern demand. Bigger numbers of cows with calves presented for sale with prices peaking at €1,990. In the weanling rings, bulls peaked at €3.56 a kilo and the heifer weanlings topped out at €3.38 a kilo. Calf numbers remain strong also with better quality lots making up to €430 for a Limousin bull calf. Dry cow numbers remain strong also with the top quality lots making up to €2.28 a kilo with a good clearance taking place. Cows with calves at foot made from €960 to €1,990 for a six-year-old Charolais cow and her bull calf at foot. Springers made from €1,060 to €1,230 per head. Calves made from €35 to €430 per head. Roscommon MART WATCH There were slightly smaller numbers on offer at our sale on Friday last (21st) with prices holding firm for quality lots in particular. Bullocks averaged from €2.42 per kilo up to €3.19 per kilo, heifers fetched from an average of €2.07 per kilo up to €2.44 per kilo, and there was an improved trade for dry cows, with lots averaging from €1.97 per kilo up to €2.34 per kilo and a full clearance of lots. Bidding was brisk, both online and at the ringside. Our special sale of heifers and general sale of bullocks and dry cows takes place this Friday (28th) at 11 am. There was a nice entry of stock at our sale on Tuesday, May 25th, with an improved trade for both
bulls and heifers. Weanling heifers ranged from an average of €2.40 per kilo up to €2.83 per kilo, with only three lots unsold. All the bulls on offer were sold, with lots fetching from an average of €2.43 per kilo up to €3.90 per kilo for a Char X weighing 400kgs and making €1,560. Young people forced to migrate due to lack of sewerage – Naughten
Speaking in the Dáil this week, local Independent TD Denis Naughten has said young people in South Roscommon are being forced to move away from the area due to the lack of wastewater treatment facilities in Monksland, Brideswell and Curraghboy. “The Government has designated Monksland, as well as the rest of Athlone, as a major growth centre that will see substantial growth in the years ahead. Monksland now requires a new network upgrade and a new treatment plant in order to cater for
increased demand. “However, the Roscommon side of the town cannot expand because we do not have those facilities. The two closest villages to Monksland – Brideswell and Curraghboy – do not have any wastewater treatment facilities and there are no plans to provide any. “So where are the young people of south Roscommon going to live? Irish Water needs to publish a five-year sewerage plan for every single county across the country because that type of stra-
tegic plan is not there”. Denis Naughten added: “The reality is that local employment opportunities are being stalled as a result of the failure to upgrade and provide wastewater treatment facilities across our area. Our towns and villages need this investment in this necessary infrastructure to provide for clean water and wastewater treatment facilities to attract families to live, work and raise their children in these rural communities”. “The lack of this basic infrastructure is being compounded

SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION Last Sunday, we celebrated the sending of the Spirit, which sealed God’s new covenant and made a new creation. In this new creation, we live in the family of God, who has revealed himself as a Trinity of love. We share in His divine nature through His Body and Blood (see 2 Peter 1:4). This is the meaning of the three feasts that cap the Easter season – Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, and Corpus Christi. These feasts should be intimate reminders of how deeply God loves us, how He chose us, from before the foundation of the world, to be His children (see Ephesians 1:4 – 5). Today’s readings illuminate how all God’s words and works were meant to prepare for the revelation of the Trinity and God’s blessing in Jesus Christ – the blessing we inherited in Baptism, and renew in each Eucharist. By God’s word, the heavens and earth were filled with His kindness, we sing in today’s Psalm. Out of love, God called Abraham and chose his descendants to be His own people, Moses says in today’s First Reading (see Deuteronomy 4:20,37). Through the Israelites, He revealed to the nations that He alone is Lord and there is no other. In Jesus, God’s word took flesh as a son of Abraham (see Matthew 1:1). And Jesus reveals in the Gospel today that the one God is Father, Son, and Spirit, and that He desires to make all people His own. As He led Israel out of Egypt, God freed us from slavery, Paul says in today’s Epistle. As He adopted Israel (see Romans 9:4), He gives us the Spirit by which we can know Him as “Our Father”. As God’s heirs, we receive the commissions of Moses and Jesus today. We are to fix our hearts on Him, and to observe all that He has commanded. Lough Ree RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew responded to two separate call outs coming to the assistance of eight people on two different cruisers on Lough Ree on Saturday last.
Lough Ree RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew responded to two separate call-outs, coming to the assistance of eight people on two cruisers on Lough Ree on Saturday last (22nd). In the first incident, a boat had become grounded on a rock shelf, west of Inchmore Island. The Lough Ree RNLI lifeboat, ‘Tara Scougall’, was launched and reached the scene just before midday. The stricken 17-foot cruiser was found grounded and on inspection the engine of the boat was in need
of repair. The Lough Ree RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew took the boat under tow and brought it safely to a berth at Coosan Point marina. Later on Saturday, just before 6 pm, the lifeboat was back in the water with another volunteer crew coming to the assistance of a 34-foot cruiser, which had run aground at Kid Island on the lake. Under RNLI volunteer helm, Emmet Devereux, the craft was refloated and continued on its way.
Tom Bradbury, one of the helms at Lough Ree RNLI said: “Following unusual weather patterns, obstacles on the lake can be hidden in rising waters. Boating enthusiasts are reminded of the importance of navigating within the marker buoys on the lake”. As a new season on the lake begins in earnest, Lough Ree RNLI Operations Manager, Jude Kilmartin said the charity looks forward to working closely with locals and visitors to our inland waterways.

RHS Home Care: 25 years providing care in our community! Twenty-five years ago a small group of volunteers got together in County Roscommon to see if they could provide social care services in the county. It was not envisaged at the time the project would grow to employ 321 people with 120 team members in Galway, 115 in Mayo and 86 in Roscommon. Initially, the cooperative trained 30 people through funding received in the ‘NOW’ New Opportunities for Women programme. To date, the cooperative cares for 720 clients across three counties on a not-for-profit basis, the only one of its kind in Ireland. The priority of RHS Home Care is the client, and since the beginning it has always been about quality care and not financial gain and that is what sets RHS Home Care apart from commercial home care companies. RHS Home Care Co-
operative is a nurse-led home care provider. The cooperative is managed by Shirley Larkin, Care Manager; Patrick Towey, General Manager; and Veronica Barrett, Director of Services. All RHS Home Care carers are trained to a very high standard and Garda vetted, supported on the ground by a team of area supervisors. Many of our carers are part-time and combine their workday with families. RHS Home Care has provided a significant economic boost to the region over the years. Our aim is to give value for money and our services are closely monitored by our area supervisors. There is a big emphases on the social side, and carers are encouraged to chat with clients regarding what is going on within communities. A large number of our clients are referred by the HSE and we also offer care services to

private clients. The aim of RHS Home Care is to give people the option of remaining within their own homes and communities. In many cases this can be done with the care support we provide. Economically, the difference between nursing home cost and home care is quite substantial. Approximately 90% of our clients are referrals from the HSE, the number of care hours range between 2 to 14 hours per week. However, the client would need to be assessed with a higher level of care needs by the HSE to be allocated a larger number of care hours. Our carers over the past 15 months have come through some challenging times, but did so with compassion while delivering care in the most professional manner. At RHS Home Care, we are no strangers to hard times since our establishment 25 years ago. In 2001, the foot in mouth disease,

Local Development Companies echo calls on €5m LEADER food initiative
The Irish Local Development Network, representing Irelands 49 Local Development Companies (LDCs) and the 35 LDCs who deliver the LEADER Programme nationwide, have joined with Ministers Heather Humphreys and Charlie McConalogue and Minister of State Pippa Hackett in urging artisan micro and small food businesses to avail of the €5 million LEADER Food Initiative. Commenting on the call for applications, ILDN Chairperson Jim Finn said: “Our members across the country stand ready in continuing to assist artisan micro and small food enterprises who wish to invest in their businesses in this important time as our economy emerges from the twin challenges of Brexit and Covid-19. With a revised rate of aid of 75% the LEADER Food Initiative offers attractive support to food enterprises wishing to take the next step”. Also responding to the Ministers’ statement, ILDN Rural Development Chair Éamonn O’Reilly said the network of Local Development Companies are ready and willing to assist food businesses who wish to find out more about the initiative. “With a range of supports available including funding up to €200,000, the LEADER initiative has proven to be a real catalyst for successful artisan, micro and small food enterprises in recent years,” he said.

Families set to pay €123 a year for data centres – Naughten Irish families are facing an additional bill of €123 a year to subsidise the cost of electricity being supplied directly to data centres, according to Independent TD Denis Naughten. Deputy Naughten said: “While data centres can secure long-term sustainable jobs in our economy, they must not be allowed to get electricity on the cheap, and instead should pay the full cost of supplying them with renewable electricity. “We have taken a strategic decision to ensure Ireland has become one of the key global centres for data storage. This has the potential to create and maintain long-term, high value jobs in the Irish economy. Jobs that can actually be physically located in the most isolated house in Ireland – and I fully support this strategy. But these data centres have significant demands for electricity, and by 2030, 70% of this will come from renewable sources at a cost esti-
mate of over €9 billion based on an Irish Academy of Engineering analysis. “If this additional cost of data centres continues to be applied to all electricity customers, and if we use the Public Service Obligation distribution model across all customers, Irish families will pay an extra €123.37 per year just for the electricity going directly to data centres. “While I support strategic data centre development, we cannot have Irish families subsidising the cost of their electricity on top of the additional cost of green electricity being supplied directly to homes. This view was supported by the Government in June 2018, with the ‘Government Statement on the Role of Data Centres in Ireland’s Enterprise Policy’ to ensure that Irish families are not forced to subsidise the cost of data centre electricity supplies. “However, this has yet to be implemented and must be addressed as a matter of urgency,” he concluded.

independent research carried out with almost 3,500 students, staff, and regional stakeholders over several months. Welcoming the announcement, the presidents of both institutes of technology, AIT’s Professor
Ciarán Ó Catháin and LIT’s Professor Vincent Cunnane said this was another momentous step in the journey towards the opening of Ireland’s newest TU. The new university, which is set to open its doors later
this year, will comprise a student population of more than 14,000 and a staff complement of approximately 1,200 people across six campuses in Athlone, Limerick (2), Clonmel, Ennis and Thurles.

It is funded by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection to provide a supported employment service, which supports job seekers with disabilities to find employment and assists employers to implement workplace inclusion practices and policies. The company works collaboratively with disability services, voluntary services, state agencies, and private and public sector employers. The Coordinator has responsibility for overall management of the project. This includes Human Resources, and Financial management, and supervision of a team of 8 staff. The Co-ordinator reports to a Board of Directors and to local Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection officers. The role requires someone with experience of working within the field of social inclusion and who has general management skills including HR, Finance, Health & Safety, Promotion and Marketing, Compliance, and GDPR. The role requires someone with excellent IT skills in Microsoft 365 and Social Media. The Co-ordinator role is a Fixed Term contract based on a 39-hour working week and is subject to annual funding. Salary is in line with DEASP scale. Key Duties and Responsibilities: • Plan, organise, deliver, and review services to clients of EmployAbility Roscommon. • Liaise with relevant agencies (Statutory and Voluntary) and employers, to ensure successful outcomes for clients. • Manage client referrals for the service. • Publicise the work of EmployAbility Roscommon to encourage participation of clients and employers. • Develop links between relevant agencies and employer bodies. • Maintain all records including staff records, in a manner, which is consistent with best practice. • Identify areas for further expansion of the service. • Strategically plan the development of the service to its full potential • Be aware of developments in the employment sector with particular emphasis on employment for people with disabilities at Government, national and regional level. • Prepare monthly financial and operational reports for funders. • Compile and submit annual Business Plan to funders • Prepare annual accounts for Company Registration Office audit with company Auditors. • Work with Company Secretary to update Companies Registration Office of any Company changes. • Ensure Company tax affairs are in order. • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety policy and procedures. • Provide direction, support, performance monitoring, professional supervision, and leadership to staff. • Identify staff training and development needs. • Assist with monitoring and evaluation of the project. • Keep Company Chairperson updated regularly regarding developments. • Present reports to Company Board Meetings • Administration of all software for set up of new users and maintenance of accounts. • Carry out any other function relevant to the position of co-ordinator as indicated from time to time. • A high level of professionalism is required for this post, and confidentiality is of utmost importance. Waste metal collection in Ballaghaderreen Ballaghaderreen Community Park is holding a waste metal collection next month in the Community Park grounds. Cancer Care West addresses cyber attack Cancer Care West has this week addressed the disruption patients have experienced following the recent cyber attack on the HSE. CEO Richard Flaherty said: “We deal with patients who are living with this every day and we understand their distress. “As a result of the recent Covid-19 crisis many of our services are now available by phone or online so patients don’t even have to leave their homes, but we are open for face-to-face consultations and drop-ins also and we are delighted to be able to welcome anyone who needs our help at our centres in Galway and Letterkenny,” he said. The excitement of the return to the top table of league football has lessened considerably for Roscommon after the first two rounds of games, and now we know that ahead of Sunday’s clash with Kerry Anthony Cunningham’s men are facing a relegation play-off in two weeks’ time regardless of the result of the clash against The Kingdom. This final game is something of a ‘free hit’ for Roscommon and the management team can try out new combinations, new systems, and new players. But experimenting against a juggernaut like Kerry is probably not advisable given their current form. Roscommon have been very disappointing so far. The industry and effort shown against Dublin was encouraging but last Sunday’s poor display against a me-
diocre Galway team was a wakeup call. Much work needs to be done to turn the situation around ahead of that relegation play-off and more importantly, the Connacht semi-final against Galway in five weeks’ time. In fairness to the management they are looking at as many players as they can, and the presumption is that there will be more changes this weekend. But the team needs a boost from somewhere and another substantial defeat will certainly help no one with bigger tests on the horizon. Kerry are a different team since this season started. They were obviously stung by the torrent of criticism that they faced following their defeat by Cork in the championship last year and are determined to put things right in 2021. They are a team on a mission and have scored a whopping five goals and 39 points in just two league games so far. Needless to say, the outrageously talented David Clifford has been their main man, and it will be interesting to see how the Roscommon defence set out to deal with the Fossa genius on Sunday. If he is on top form then he is simply unmarkable.

A chink of light would be Kerry’s concession of four goals against Dublin last Sunday and there are still doubts about their defence. So perhaps Roscommon’s best chance of a win this Sunday is to get the ball into the attack as often as possible. Roscommon have a number of problems that need to be addressed, namely the kick-out strategy, a settled midfield partnership, and a more direct style in attack. Last Sunday against Galway too much of Roscommon’s play was lateral and backwards and there were a number of occasions when there was only one attacker available for a pass. Make no mistake; this is another very difficult assignment. While the result makes no difference, the last thing that this team needs is a heavy defeat. At the top level in sport winning becomes a habit but unfortunately losing does too. Anthony Cunningham and his selectors will want to set a platform for the forthcoming relegation play-off and the Connacht semi-final against Galway. The supporters, meanwhile, will want to see a chink of light and grounds for optimism. The Roscommon attack has much promise but has been too dependent on Ciaráin Murtagh and Donie Smith thus far. The defence faces its toughest test to date, especially the defender who draws the short straw of trying to shadow David Clifford, but I presume Roscommon will have a plan in place to try to stop the ball getting to the Kerry ace. But to concentrate on one

Kerry forward would be a fatal mistake. The likes of Paudie Clifford, Paul Geaney, Tommy Walsh and the returning Stephen O’Brien all carry huge threats also.

Roscommon Ladies can secure a league semifinal place if they see off Down this Sunday. Another home tie is a bonus and they will be anxious to bag another two points ahead of their final game away to Sligo in two weeks’ time. Roscommon manager, Diane O’Hora, is looking for improvement after watching her side dig deep to overcome Fermanagh in round one.
“We were very happy to win last Sunday and the biggest positives out of the victory were the attitude and character shown by our players when we needed it. Fermanagh came back well and we showed great resilience to see out the win but we have a lot of improvements to make,” she told People Sport this week. “There are no favourites on the panel. Everyone is in competition for a starting place; there is great competition and that’s the way we want it. There will be changes for Sunday, it’s all about everyone getting a fair chance”. Diane says Roscommon will have to be more clinical in attack: “Last Sunday our fullforward line only scored two points from play and that’s a worry. They won plenty of ball
but we need a better return on the scoreboard. It is frustrating that we concentrated a lot in training on our long-range shooting but when it came to the match we were blocked down so many times. “What I really liked last Sunday was that the girls were not happy with how they played despite the win and that’s very positive. They want to improve,” she said. The former Down manager expects a strong challenge from the visitors this Sunday. “There are four or five players still playing from the time I was there and they are very good footballers. Jess Foy will play with Northern Ireland in the forthcoming European Championships in soccer and is a class act. Natasha Ferris and Eimear Smyth are also
top of the range players so we will have to be ready for another stern challenge. But at home we will be hoping to play with the required intensity needed to win. I saw the Down and Sligo match (Sligo won by two points) and I was impressed by Sligo but Down will be anxious to play much better this Sunday and we will have to be prepared for that,” she concluded. This is a ‘must win’ game for Down following their defeat last weekend but with home advantage and the new management instilling the competitive spirit that was evident at Dr. Hyde Park last Sunday, it should be victory number two for Roscommon this weekend. The golfing year teed off last Sunday with the traditional Captain’s Drive In event, led by men’s captain Jonathan Egan. Roscommon Ladies made it a winning start in the first round of their league campaign with a hard-earned win over Fermanagh at Dr. Hyde Park on Sunday last. New manager, Diane O’Hora, said afterwards that she was pleased with the result but hoped for improvement ahead of the Rossies’ second outing against Down this coming weekend. Roscommon were forced to survive a late Fermanagh rally in order to secure the two points on offer, with Laura Fleming and goalkeeper Helena Cummins to the fore. The visitors were edgy early on and Roscommon could have made things a little more comfortable for themselves had they shown more composure in front of goal. Chances went astray for both Aisling Hanly and Rebecca Finan as the Ulster side came into the game. In fact, Fermanagh edged ahead with a
brace of points before Finan settled the hosts’ nerves with a pointed free. Hanly, making her competitive senior debut, then clipped over a nice point before the visitors hit back ahead of the first water break. The teams went in level at half-time despite a really well-worked Roscommon goal which saw Jenny Higgins and Laura Fleming combine before Fleming hammered the ball to the net. Direct Fermanagh running caused Roscommon problems in the second half despite a fast Roscommon start following a Natalie McHugh goal. Laura Fleming grew in influence as the game wore on while goalkeeper Cummins was forced to pull off a number of saves to keep an improving Fermanagh at bay. The visitors did eventually raise a green flag but Fleming’s second goal of the afternoon had given Roscommon a cushion and they held out for a hard-fought win. No grant for Dr. Hyde Park development Roscommon County Board have failed to obtain a grant under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund to help develop the facilities at Dr. Hyde Park. Last week’s County Board meeting was told that it was still the intention of the board to go ahead with the refurbishment of Hyde Park at a cost of €2.5 million.

The original site which was earmarked to develop the Roscommon GAA Centre of Excellence at Runnabracken has been sold for €305,000, it was revealed at the latest County Board meeting. The 54-acre site was put up for sale last year. The County Board Chairman Brian Carroll told the meeting that Roscommon GAA is looking at the possibility of purchasing a site close to Roscommon town to develop the Centre of Excellence.

St. Brigid’s GAA Club is saddened by the passing of Jimmy Martin, who won three senior county titles with the club in 1958, 1959 and 1963 and went on to become one of the country’s top referees. Jimmy took charge of a number of major games at inter-county and club level, including All-Ireland semi-finals as well as Connacht and Munster finals and Railway Cup games. He also refereed five Roscommon Senior Finals from 1961 to 1980. The club extends its deepest sympathies to his wife Eileen, family, and relatives.

oscommon now face a relegation play-off against one of the teams from Division One North following this disappointing six-point reverse at the hands of old rivals Galway in Pearse Stadium last Sunday. Perhaps even more importantly, this result hands the Tribesmen a timely boost ahead of the Connacht semi-final between these sides at Dr. Hyde Park on July 4th. Following their thrashing by Kerry a week earlier, it was always going to be interesting to see how Padraic Joyce’s men would react and while they were much tighter in defence and sharper in attack, they still have much work to do to re-join the elite teams like Dublin and Kerry. As for Roscommon, this was a very underwhelming display at times and they now know they will have to beat the likes of Monaghan or Armagh to prevent them sliding out of the top division once again. Similar to the performance against Dublin, there was no shortage of effort and industry,
and David Murray, the returning Sean Mullooly, Niall Daly, Ciaráin Murtagh and Donie Smith all did well. But elsewhere around the field, Roscommon players were found wanting and too many times possession was squandered and too many soft scores conceded. With eight minutes of normal time to go, Shane Killoran’s delivery was fisted to the net by Ciaráin Murtagh to reduce the margin to just two and give Roscommon a ray of hope. However, Galway replied immediately to score their second goal when sub Tomo Culhane bundled past Colm Lavin after the ball was kicked in by another sub Dessie Conneely. Culhane appeared to be in the square before the ball arrived but the goal stood and Roscommon’s chances of a comeback ended with that controversial score. It was a slip up by David Coldrick’s umpires and it compounded the visitors’ misery. From page 38 –> the home side were always out in front with corner forward Robert Finnerty outstanding. The young attacker gave the Roscommon defence a torrid time and scored five first-half points. Ciaráin Murtagh and Donie Smith were keeping the scoreboard ticking over for Roscommon but at half-time Galway led 1-7 to 0-8. Roscommon manager, Anthony Cunnigham, said afterwards that the early goal left his side facing an uphill task. “It was the worst possible start against the strong breeze. I thought that we played very well to get back into the match. For us to get a goal in the second half and then to concede one almost immediately afterwards was very disappointing and you won’t get away with that at this level of football. “They have some top-class forwards like Shane Walsh and Damien Comer and young guys like Culhane and Finnerty so it was always going to be difficult for us. “We have plenty to work on and we won’t be too downhearted. The
4th of July is the date we have to be ready for now and we will focus on that. “We are not too far away, Galway are very hard to beat here in Salthill and they were coming off a big defeat last week and we have been looking at a lot of players. “We are looking forward to the Kerry game (on Sunday). Any day you play in Division One you are learning. We will be playing to win and take the most we can out of it and then prepare for whatever comes up after that,” he said. Man of the Match Robert Finnerty said afterwards that the Galway players were determined to produce a performance after their heavy defeat to Kerry. “We wanted to bounce back and we are looking forward to playing Dublin now next weekend. “We had a good start and often times we play better against the wind. After today we will take a bit of confidence going into the Dubs game and we are happy with the way we played and the way everyone worked,” he said.
It doesn’t get any easier for Roscommon. A rejuvenated Kerry with in-form David Clifford in tow - come to Dr. Hyde Park on Sunday and then there is a relegation playoff against a team from Division One North the following week. At this stage it looks like that will be against Monaghan or Armagh. Roscommon need to bring more energy to their play. Too often good moves ended up going laterally or backwards. Ciaráin Murtagh and Donie Smith accounted for 1-12 out of Roscommon’s total of 1-13 so other attackers will also have to find a way of getting in on the scoring act. Roscommon also struggled at midfield where Paul Conroy was outstanding for Galway. Two very tough games coming up for Roscommon before a break of a month until the big game in Dr. Hyde Park against Galway on July 4th. The Rossies have a mountain of work to do before that crucial match because Sunday was a day to forget beside the seaside for Anthony Cunningham and his players.
