Shock over the ordeal endured by a woman in her 90s and her two sons during a harrowing burglary in Ballintubber in the early hours of Monday morning is now turning to anger, with one local TD calling for the “thugs” responsible to be “made an example of”. Roscommon-Galway Independent TD, Michael Fitzmaurice, said: “The perpetrators of this heinous crime must be brought to justice. No stone should be left unturned in the investigation to identify these thugs”. The investigation is ongoing this week with Gardaí in Castlerea anxious to hear from anyone who can assist them.

The aggravated burglary occurred in the early hours of Monday morning last (August 22nd) at a business premises/ home in the Ashpark area of Ballintubber. A number of men entered the property. The three victims were held hostage in one room while the house was searched. It is understood that the offenders were armed with screwdrivers. The gang fled the scene with a sum of cash and the victims then managed to free themselves and raise the alarm. Deputy Fitzmaurice said: “It is of paramount importance that the thugs who have struck fear into the heart of this community are apprehended and made an example of”. Full report on page 7.
