Mayo Roscommon Memorial Walk and ‘Shine a Light’ Tree Lighting Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation is inviting the public to attend their annual Memorial Walk and ‘Shine a Light’ Tree Lighting Ceremony at Knock Shrine, which will take place this year on Sunday, December 3rd. The event is held to help raise funds for vital palliative care services in both Mayo and Roscommon. The 5km Memorial Walk starts at 5 pm and will loop around Knock. This year’s event will be by candlelight, and tealights will be provided to everyone taking part. Once the walk finishes at the Pope Francis Plaza on the Main Street in Knock, Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation will hold their annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at 6 pm with music by John McNicholl. People are invited to remember a loved one, living or deceased, and share in the Shine A Light ceremony. During the ceremony, loved ones who have passed away or indeed those who have been going through a challenging
time will be remembered. Prayers and music will be offered for those being remembered. Refreshments will also be served. Positive impact of ‘Be Kind to Your Mind’ event The Abbey Hotel in Roscommon was a hub of mental health awareness on Tuesday, October 24th, as the ‘Be Kind to Your Mind’ event unfolded, leaving a positive impact on all in attendance. The event, which was organised by Mental Health Roscommon, featured the uplifting tunes of the band ‘Rhythm to Recovery 4 Roscommon,’ setting the tone for the evening. Renowned psychologist Shane Martin graced the stage, delivering an engaging talk on ‘Bounceability – resilience and buoyancy’, with a touch of humour that resonated with the audience. Heartfelt thanks were extended to the dedicated volunteers of Mental Health Roscommon – Da-

Having inadvertently subjected myself to about 30 seconds (something about a parish quiz) of The 2 Johnnies Late Night Lock In (RTE 2) tonight, I’m frantically searching for an email address for the RTE complaints department (that, or the proverbial stiff whiskey)…
FRIDAY ‘Solstice’ success
Tonight’s 10th anniversary concert by Roscommon Solstice Choir attracted an extraordinary crowd to the beautiful venue, our muchloved Sacred Heart Church. It was a great night, befitting this special milestone. On pages 20 & 21, the Solstice Choir’s own report on the event is published, along with a number of photographs from the concert. Given that all seating in the church was taken up, and there were a number of attendees also standing, estimates of a remarkable crowd of 900-1000 people are no exaggeration. The concert itself was a terrific, uplifting three-hour extravaganza, with the superb Eimear & Andrew Reynolds (Musical Directors) leading the choir through its repertoire, and a number of special guest artists adding their distinguished voices. This was a great night of entertainment in a beautiful setting, and with the added bonus of over €3,000 being raised for the Sacred Heart Church Restoration Fund. It was a celebration of the choir’s 10th anniversary, and also a very welcome social gathering, with people from all over the county delighted in this post-lockdown era to mingle and chat on such a scale. Eugene Murphy, as since the formation of the choir in 2013, was master of ceremonies, while Roscommon Solstice Choir chairperson John F Hanley wrapped up
the formalities in a heartfelt address during which he thanked the very many people who help to make this the great success story it is. Congratulations to all associated with Roscommon Solstice Choir on this 10th anniversary milestone.
SATURDAY-MONDAY VAR controversy
So, how’s that introduction of VAR going in the Premier League? The Video Assistant Referee system was introduced in top-flight English football a few years ago, and it’s fair to say that for all its positives, VAR has also been a source of controversy and frustration. When big decisions are called wrong – moreso perhaps when apparently straightforward calls are messed up – managers, players, supporters and pundits become very frustrated with the officials operating the system. Another frustration relates to the often lengthy delays in matches as varying
camera angles are checked for what are often very marginal considerations. And VAR is also bringing anomalies ‘into play’ – a way of looking at the game which is at variance with all we have ever known. For example, a beautifully crafted goal could be disallowed a full minute or so after a foul (as determined by VAR) has occurred way up the pitch. Conceivably, a penalty could be awarded to Team A (following a VAR review) after Team B has broken downfield and scored at the other end! On Saturday, Newcastle’s winning goal against Arsenal was subject to three VAR checks before being awarded: Had the ball gone over the endline before being crossed? Was there a foul in the build-up? Was a player offside? Naturally, opposing managers – following long-established tradition – usually view VAR calls differently, i.e. in direct relation to how their team has been affected. Eddie Howe (Newcastle) thought it was “a good goal” – but Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was fuming, labelling the three-VAR-
decisions-in-one goal “a disgrace”. Then, on Monday evening, the VAR people were very busy again as the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium hosted an astonishing game between Spurs and Chelsea. This was wonderful viewing for neutrals watching on Sky Sports, with two players sent off, multiple yellow cards, Spurs players limping off injured (unfortunate, but added to the drama), five disallowed goals, and 22 minutes of added time being played. Oh yes, and four goals that were allowed. The evening’s absolute chaos was by no means all down to VAR; it was just an epic and breathtakingly entertaining game, a gift from the football Gods!
MONDAY/TUESDAY Israel’s response
According to an RTE online report, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said he does not regret describing the Israeli response to the 7th of October Hamas attack as “something more approach-
ing revenge”. I hadn’t heard the Taoiseach’s original comment. Apparently he said last week that the Israeli onslaught in Gaza is not just self-defence, but more like revenge. Something I like about Varadkar is that he is a straight-talker who (more often than not) has the courage to stick by something he has said, even if it’s controversial. One might not always agree with him, but it’s refreshing to see a senior politician standing his ground and not capitulating when criticised. Besides, I agree with him in this instance. The Israeli response to the reprehensible savagery of Hamas has itself been disgusting. One might be sceptical of reports on the death toll that emanate from Gaza – latest claims are that 10,000 people have been killed by Israel in attacks (in four weeks) – but the UN has said the area is becoming “a children’s graveyard”. Meanwhile, in a phone call today with Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, US President Joe Biden discussed ramping up humanitarian deliveries into Gaza, emphasised the importance of protecting Palestinian civilians during “military operations” – and discussed ongoing efforts to secure the release of hostages. Many of us will feel he might also have insisted on an immediate ceasefire (i.e. an end to the killing of innocent people), but it wasn’t to be.

Minister Harris ‘excited’ by proposal for apprenticeship centre for Roscommon Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan says there is now an excellent opportunity to have a world class apprenticeship centre in Roscommon town. She was speaking after a Seanad commencement matter raised by Senator Dolan and Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy highlighted the need and demand for apprenticeships in County Roscommon – and received the support of Minister Simon Harris. Senator Dolan said, “Minister Simon Harris has indicated clear support for an apprenticeship centre in County Roscommon. There is significant demand in our region as there is currently no apprenticeship centre in the county. This will bring jobs and enterprise to Roscommon. “GRETB have submitted a proposal to SOLAS, the national agency over Further Education and Training, for a two and a half acre site in the heart of Roscommon town. This is a fantastic site in terms of a central location, easy bus and rail access for the whole county and surrounding counties, as well as existing workshop buildings which could be repurposed. “We need to see access to apprenticeship programmes for people in towns and villages in Ireland. There is such a demand – speak

to anyone and they will say they can’t find tradespeople, carpenters, electricians, etc – and we have long wait times in Roscommon for retrofitting and the warmer homes scheme”.

Creggs energy information event Creggs has joined the SEAI Sustainable Energy Community and an information event will be held on Saturday, November 18th, at 11 am in the Heritage Centre, Creggs (F42 X674). Lecture on the O’Conor Don A meeting of the County Roscommon Historical & Archaeological Society will take place at 8 pm on Tuesday, November 14th, in the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, Tulsk. Following the meeting, at 8.30 pm, there will be a lecture, entitled ‘The O’Conor Don and the culture and politics of liberal Catholicism and Catholic Unionism 1860-1906’, which will be given by Dr Aidan Enright. A native of Elphin, Aidan holds a BA and MA from NUIG, and a PhD from Queen’s University, Belfast. He now works as a Research Administrator in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Leeds Beckett University. Dr Enright has recently published his doctoral thesis, which was a study of the political life of Charles Owen O’Conor (1838-1906), more commonly known as ‘The O’Conor Don’. He was one of the most prominent Catholic landlords and liberal politicians of his generation, serving as MP for Co. Roscommon between 1860 and 1880. Published by Four Courts Press in 2022, Dr Enright’s book is titled, ‘Charles Owen O’Conor, ‘The O’Conor Don’: landlordism, liberal Catholicism and unionism in 19th cent. Ireland’. The countdown to Christmas is on, and a very worthy local animal welfare charity – TNR South Roscommon – would like to ask you all to please, please keep them in mind this year and support their annual charity raffle. TNR South Roscommon and its volunteers do unbelievable work saving the lives of cats and kittens all year long. That work does not stop at Christmas; in fact it never, ever stops. However, in order to continue to save the lives of these deserving fur babies, TNR South Roscommon needs your help, they need your support, they need your donations and they desperately need volunteers…why? Because these angels have spread their wings and are now helping cats and kittens in the Glenamaddy/Mountbellew areas, humanely trapping, and transporting orphaned fur babies to a network of veterinary surgeries for spaying, neutering, vaccinating and, very often, providing them with life-saving treatment, surgeries and care. Then, when these cats and kittens are well enough, TNR South Roscommon volunteers provide them with shelter, food and continuous lifelong love and care. Tickets are already on sale for the charity’s annual Christmas raffle, the fabulous prize being donated by animal-loving, kind-hearted local businessman Leo Haverty of Elka Pet Shop, Boarding Kennels and Cattery in Mountbellew. Each year, this wonderful human provides his support to TNR South Roscommon, and this year Leo has kindly donated three beautiful bicycles, all to be raffled off, the entire proceeds going to the charity and the innocent little lives they save day in, day out. Gospel Reflection Sunday, November 12 According to marriage customs of Jesus’ day, a bride was first “betrothed” to her husband but continued for a time to live with her family. Then, at the appointed hour some months later, the groom would come to claim her, leading her family and bridal party to the wedding feast that would celebrate and inaugurate their new life together. This is the background to the parable of the last judgment we hear in today’s Gospel. In the parable’s symbolism, Jesus is the Bridegroom (see Mark 2:19). In this, He fulfils God’s ancient promise to join Himself forever to His chosen people as a husband cleaves to his bride (see Hosea 2:16-20). The virgins of the bridal party represent us, the members of the Church. We were “betrothed” to Jesus in Baptism (see 2 Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:25-27) and are called to lives of holiness and devotion until He comes again to lead us to the heavenly wedding feast at the end of time (see Revelation 19:7-9; 21:1-4). As St Paul warns in today’s Epistle, Jesus is coming again, though we know not the day nor the hour. We need to keep vigil throughout the dark night of this time in which our Bridegroom seems long delayed. We need to keep our souls’ lamps filled with the oil of perseverance and desire for God – virtues that are extolled in today’s First Reading and Psalm. We are to seek Him in love, meditating upon His kindness, calling upon His name, striving to be ever more worthy of Him, to be found without spot or blemish when He comes. If we do this, we will be counted as wise and the oil for our lamps will not run dry (see 1 Kings 17:16). Protests against ‘Gaza onslaught’ held locally
Organisers of a protest against “the bombardment of Gaza and the killing of thousands of people” say up to 200 people attended the event in Roscommon town on Saturday last. The event was organised by the IPCN (Irish Pakistani community network), and Kashmir Peace and Solidarity Council of Ireland. Speakers from both organising groups, along with a representative of Castlerea Sinn Féin, called for an end to the killings and also for “the freedom” of Palestine. Also speaking at the protest was Katie Cunningham from Strokestown Sinn Féin, the Roscommon representative for Ogra Sinn Féin.

Why penalty points should be doubled on bank holiday weekends Our man Frank on why motorists should ‘pay the penalty’ on bank holiday weekends; Memories of the showband era; Local GAA awards… Friends of mine were recently visited by relations from Australia, and in the course of conversation they talked about the big increase in deaths on
our roads this year, and what our government could do to reduce the number of fatalities. Of course it’s not just the fatalities that cause unknown trauma and pain to so many families – the huge number of life-changing injuries that can result from any traffic accident can affect every single member of the family chain. In the course of the chat, the Australians told my friends that in about half the states in Australia, a lot of penalty point offences are doubled
on holiday weekends as a deterrent to irresponsible drivers. Over there, they call such black marks ‘demerits’, and like our penalty points system, if you accumulate enough demerits you can lose your licence and maybe find it very difficult to get insurance. They said those extra measures have been in existence for up to 20 years, and have helped enormously to reduce the carnage on their roads. Funnily enough, I proudly told our mutual acquaintances that here in Ireland, we had the same deterrents,
and that for last week’s Halloween holidays double penalty points were in place. However, I was wrong (as per usual), since we are still at the proposal stage; Jack Chambers, the Minister of State for Transport, is developing a plan to be included in the Road Traffic Measures Bill for 2023, which would indeed see the doubling of penalty points for various driving offences such as speeding – but (typically Irish) both Houses of the Oireachtas have yet to approve his bill.
The Miami Showband
Showband stars: Down memory lane with Seamus… For many people of my age, the Showband era, when local carnivals were part of our normal lives, is something that we will never forget; nights at Creggs Carnival still fill us with nostalgia and special memories that seem to get more special with each passing year. I have told you before that my late father Bill was secretary to the Carnival Committee for many a long year. And when he retired from the (voluntary) job, he passed the mantle on to a man who is better known for his membership of the Castlerea Brass & Reed Band, among many other things – Seamus Ward. Seamus, who took the reins in 1978, told me how he used to drive to Galway with a big bag of tenpenny pieces in order to get on the public phones (rural Ireland did not have public pay phones back then) to try and book bands for the carnival. He would negotiate with various band managers to get the best possible deal for the carnival committee. As we talked, he told me he still had some letters
from bands offering their services, and on Friday night last he duly landed them up to me. There were lots of interesting details contained in the collection. Among them was the fact that Sunday night was the principal night of the week for going out – all the bands were much more expensive for a Sunday night dance compared to a midweek one. Saturday night didn’t feature at all back then. The carnival dance nights were Sunday, Wednesday and Friday, and in most villages the carnival lasted two weeks, with a total of seven dances – three Sundays, two Wednesdays, and two Fridays. Of the letters Seamus had kept – bearing in mind they were from January 1978 – it’s amazing how many of the artists are still going strong! He had quotations for Paddy Cole, Sandy Kelly, Philomena Begley, Susan McCann, Hugo Duncan, Gina & The Champions, Gene Stuart, and the evergreen Brendan Shine, all of whom seem to have had big revivals in their careers in recent years. Just to jog the memories of older readers, Mau-
rice Mulcahy, Johnny Flynn, Jim Cantwell, Lucky Numbers, Top Ten, The Miami Showband, Ian Corrigan, Tweed, Gerry Reynolds & The Hi-Lows and The Memories also featured, with most of the latter list playing in Creggs in 1977. The carnival that year took place from August 14th to August 28th, but they were the last of Bill’s involvement, as he passed away in July of that year. Seamus then took over, but carnivals were coming to an end – to be replaced by ballrooms, and later by discos. But I have to say it was heartwarming to go through all the letters and to see the sort of money the bands were on. Of them all, Chips were the most expensive, with a guarantee of £700 and a split of 50/50 (if that was bigger) for a Sunday night. Anyway, thanks to Seamus – it was great to go through all the stuff and reminisce on long and late nights under the marquee at the back of the school. I don’t suppose we’ll ever see one in Creggs again, but you never know! Hope springs eternal!
It is an absolute fact that bank holiday weekends are more dangerous for road users than any other weekends, hence why they are classed as highrisk periods. It is accepted there are lots more people on the move, driving longer distances, and more drivers under the influence of drink or drugs or both, so there should be no debate required at all. Get the bill through and have it in place for the Christmas holidays! It might just save your life over the festive period.
The late Sean Crean
On Sunday last we bid farewell to yet another stalwart of our community when Sean Crean was laid to rest in Kilbegnet Cemetery. Sean, who was closing in on his 90th birthday, was father of Padraig, Harry, John, Noel (and the late Raymond), Sandra and Stephanie, and all were very good footballers for Creggs who represented the club for many years. Padraig, at 20 years of age, was the captain of our Junior Championship winning team of 1983, while Stephanie and Sandra were superb players on our ladies team of the 1980s. To show the line is still strong, Sean’s grandson Thomas is now a key man on our team, as well as a panellist on the Roscommon county senior squad. Sean and his late wife Julia, who had the misfortune of trying to put some knowledge into my head during her time as a teacher in Creggs National School, kept the church choir going for many years, with Julia on the organ and Sean often the only male singer. To the Crean family, their extended family, relations and friends, we express our deepest sympathy. May Sean rest in peace.
And finally… Onto local matters: last week I told you about the big game between the Valley and the Mountain during the Harvest Festival and about the festivities that took place afterwards – but I forgot to tell you that the awards for the year were also given out that evening! Mary Keane was the very deserving winner of the Club Person of the Year award. On the playing field, Ronan Dowd, who also featured on the Roscommon Herald’s Intermediate team of the year, was our Senior Player of the Year, our lad Paul was the Junior Player of the Year, and Dan Flynn was the Young Player of the Year. Congrats to them all, and here’s hoping for a good year both on and off the playing pitch, in 2024. for now ’Til next week, bye

Call for Proposals to Assist Roscommon Volunteer Centre in Developing a Strategic Plan for 2024-2030 1. Introduction
3. Key Deliverables
Roscommon Volunteer Centre (RVC) is an independent organisation affiliated to Volunteer Ireland and was established in 2020. It is a registered charity and a Company Limited by Guarantee. RVC provides a county-wide service to people who wish to volunteer some of their time to non-profit organisations, and to non-profits in sourcing volunteers to help them pursue their aims.
A finalised Strategic Plan, which should be included in the tender response: 1. Initial fortnight, scoping exercise, and reporting back on same. 2. In close consultation with RVC, conducting the strategic planning process and documenting, reporting mid-way and when nearing completion, sending a draft of the plan to RVC and its board for final consultations, and on approval of the final draft, sending the finalised plan to RVC and its board. 3. Development of a consultation process to reach a wide range of relevant stakeholders such as VIOs, other Volunteer Centres, Volunteer Ireland, volunteers, as well as organisations that engage with RVC such as Roscommon Leader Partnership, Roscommon County Council and Roscommon libraries; 5. Geographic spread and representation of external stakeholders across the following regions of Roscommon: Strokestown, Castlerea, Roscommon Town, Ballaghaderreen, Monksland, Boyle. May include streetside interviews, focus groups and/or one-to-one conversations. 6. The Plan should take into account the DRCD’s National Volunteering Strategy 2021 – 2025 and Volunteer Ireland’s latest strategic plan and should take stock of changes in volunteering trends locally, nationally and internationally.
Our Vision: to support the people of Roscommon in further enhancing its places and ways of living as flourishing, vibrant communities, with volunteering at its heart. Our Mission: to promote the value of volunteering and to increase the range and quality for the benefit of the people of County Roscommon. Our Values: Respect, Belonging, Empowerment, Courage, Transparency, Equality and Diversity, and Collaboration. RVC works with a network of other volunteer centres across Ireland to implement a robust local volunteering service which supports the actions outlined in the National Volunteering Strategy 2021-2025 of the Department of Rural and Community Development. Our aim is to support community groups and to ensure that everyone who wants to volunteer, can volunteer. We do this in a variety of ways: a) Volunteers and volunteering We promote and celebrate volunteering in Roscommon by participating in campaigns such as National Volunteering Week and hosting a local Roscommon Volunteer Awards Ceremony. We utilise I-VOL, the national volunteering database, to connect volunteers to volunteering opportunities hosted by community groups. b) Charities and not for profit organisations We support regional volunteer involving organisations (VIOs) through training, resources, advice and consultancy. We help these organisations think through their volunteering programme, identify where volunteers can be a resource, and support them in drafting and posting volunteering roles. c) Garda Vetting RVC is registered with the National Vetting Bureau and has trained staff to act as Vetting Liaison Officers to support community groups in processing their Garda Vetting applications using the e-vetting platform. d) The national volunteer network We liaise with 28 other Volunteer Centres across the country and utilise our network for information-sharing and best practice on volunteer management. e) The national volunteer network We work closely with Volunteer Ireland who provides support to all 29 regionally-based volunteer centres in areas such as branding, campaigns, policy development, and implementing programmes such as the Community Volunteers Programme.
2. Background and Methodology Roscommon Volunteer Centre works to implement the Roscommon Volunteer Centre Strategic Plan 2020 - 2023 which is due to come to an end in December 2023. We are now looking to develop a new strategy plan for 2024 – 2030. We are inviting proposals from suitably qualified individuals to help us to develop a strategic plan for the next six years. The successful candidate(s) will have relevant experience, excellent research and engagement skills, sectoral expertise, tried and tested methodologies, group facilitation skills and a willingness to challenge the status quo and assumptions. The new strategic plan will be based on a review of the current strategic plan, consultations with board and staff members and interviews with key stakeholders including the public, volunteers, volunteer involving organisations, the Department of Rural and Community Development (DRCD) and other strategic partners.
4. Duration of the Project The project should commence in early 2024 and be completed preferably by Spring 2024. In order to ensure the best possible strategic plan, we can exercise a degree of flexibility with this timeline.
5. Submission of Tenders Experienced facilitators are asked to submit a proposal that should include the following: 1. Background information with C.V.; 2. Evidence of prior experience in delivery of similar projects with particular emphasis on experience of working with the community sector; 3. Relevant references; 4. An outline of the proposed methodology; 5. Quotation in Euros and inclusive of VAT, showing a timetable with breakdown of days required to deliver the project and including all costs associated with the work such as preparation time, travel expenses and any other expenses as required. Roscommon Volunteer Centre shall not accept any responsibility for any expenses or loss, which may be incurred in the preparation of a Tender.

Let’s talk about ... THE ISRAELIHAMAS WAR

Immediate and sustainable ceasefire urgently required For years after I first moved to Galway, I would often pass by a wall along Headford Road which, in big bold letters, bared the phrase ‘SAOIRSE DON PHAILISTÍN’ (‘freedom for Palestine’). I couldn’t tell you how long the graffitied message was there before I came across it, but in any case, throughout my time living in the city over the past few years, there it remained. At least, that is until March just gone, when it, and the entire wall it was sprawled on, was painted over. The wall now features a brightly coloured mural with the phrase, ‘Take time. Care for your mind’. This arose as part of a HSE project, which saw similar murals put up on walls in Cork and Dublin too, all in an aim to raise awareness of mental health and available supports. It is far from a poor use for what was an otherwise empty wall, but obviously part and parcel of doing so meant doing away with the old ‘SAOIRSE DON PHAILISTÍN’ graffiti. Again, I say old, but I really couldn’t say how long the graffiti had been there. It could’ve been painted mere days before I first noticed it, but arguably (and admittedly assuming a lack of regular graffiti removal by the county council), it theoretically could’ve been there for years and years, given just how long-standing the conflict it references is. With all the recent events in Gaza, the amount of mainstream attention being focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has reached a heightened level in the past few weeks. But the conflict is, of course, anything but recent; beginning in the mid-20th century, it is one of the longest and most protracted conflicts in modern history, one consisting of continual tension and devastating periods of death and destruction, interrupted only intermediately by a number of short-lived ceasefires – we just don’t normally talk about it this much. Consider other notably violent periods in the decades-long conflict’s recent history, such as the 2012 or 2014 Gaza Wars, or even the outbreak of violence in May 2021. While far from not being publicised or talked about at all, these events didn’t seem to reach quite the same level of global attention and outcry we’re seeing now. And it would be impossible really to pinpoint why, but I imagine a significant factor has to be the scale of the death toll this time around, which, just to contextualise things, on day one alone had amounted to over half that attributed to the entirety of 2014’s 50-day war. But beyond one Gaza war perhaps seeming more ‘newsworthy’ than another because of more lives being lost, when it comes to why it’s taken so long for the conflict in general to receive this level of global attention, there are numerous factors at play.

One major one, in my view at least, lies in the fact that there is often a tendency for western countries to not pay proper attention to atrocities happening in other places until things reach some sort of stomach-churning breaking point, which we have doubtlessly seen both on and since October 7th. But of course this is far from the only factor – this conflict is, after all, very often an extremely complex one to understand, and even to keep up to date with and find reliable information about, which can only feed into a general lack of awareness on the matter. Many people have also commented that this aspect of things is certainly not helped by certain countries, like the US, having vested interests in not stirring up discontent against Israel (with whom they have strong economic and historical ties), regardless of whatever the morality or actuality of the situation may be. But as the violence continues, such countries are being put under more and more scrutiny in terms of how they are responding to the war. The UN General Assembly’s resolution last week calling for an “urgent, durable, and permanent humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza” has been a particular catalyst for this. The UK’s abstention has been heavily criticised by members of the public
It feels fair to assume that our position, particularity when it comes to the occupation of Palestine and our support of Palestinian sovereignty, must stem significantly from our own history with occupation
and politicians alike, with Scotland’s First Minister calling it “a shameful abdication of moral responsibility”. The US’s ‘No’ vote in line with Israel, though perhaps not wildly out of the blue, has received heavy criticism too. Meanwhile, Ireland, along with the 119 others who made up the majority vote, voted in favour of a truce. This falls in line completely with the position we’ve held since the war broke out last month, with Irish attitudes – both those of the State and of the public – maintaining the importance of ending the rampant violence and the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza. In fact, it falls in line with the position we’ve held long before the Hamas attack on October 7th; for decades, we have been calling for “a permanent and sustainable ceasefire”. Notably, in addition to such a ceasefire, our position historically has also involved calling for lifting the blockade on Gaza and the establishment of a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders (before the Six Day War saw Israel almost quadruple its territory) – in other words, our position historically has consistently leaned a lot more pro-Palestine than a lot of countries, at least certainly when it comes to the ones we’re normally aligned with. In fact, in 1980 we became the first EU state to declare that peace “had to be based on a fully sovereign State of Palestine” and we have directly supported the Palestinian people through direct humanitarian aid for the past two decades. It feels fair to assume that our position, particularity when it comes to the occupation of Palestine and our support of Palestinian sovereignty, must stem significantly from our own history with occupation. It is consistent with our long-established history of providing aid to colonised, previously colonised, and otherwise disadvantaged or impoverished countries. The nature of the recent heinous acts committed by Hamas has stirred up a lot of anti-Palestinian sentiment and backlash for those who speak in defence of Palestinian sovereignty or those who have begun to
criticise the extent of Israel’s response in the weeks since, such as Leo Varadkar’s recent comments which suggested that as opposed to self-defence, Israel’s recent actions are “something more approaching revenge”. The attack on October 7th, and the scale of the antisemitism that fuelled it, is absolutely sickening. It has been reported as the deadliest single day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust. This attack and Hamas in general need to be expressly condemned, and such condemnation cannot be skipped over out of worry around how it may be falsely interpreted as a political Israeli-Palestinian stance. This condemnation should be seen less as political, but human. Equally, it is important to acknowledge the fallout of the Israeli response and also all that preceded October 7th in terms of what Israeli occupation has truly meant for Palestine over the past decades, the scale of death and destruction. At the start of this article, I mentioned the ‘SAOIRSE DON PHAILISTÍN’ graffiti I used to pass by on Headford Road. There is a reason it sat painted there for long before recent events brought this conflict to the forefront of people’s attention. This conflict did not begin on October 7th, and it did not begin with Hamas. This week marks a month into the IsraeliHamas war, and the scale of all the devastation that has come from it is nothing short of heartbreaking. I hope it goes without saying my heart goes out to all those affected, that I understand I can’t begin to fathom the extent of the pain or the horror. As complex as all that has come before this conflict is and as multi-faceted as both the perpetrators of its innumerous incidences of violence and the victims of that violence are, the solution which needs to come about before anything else is comparatively simple – an immediate and sustainable ceasefire. There is no telling when and if such a ceasefire could realistically come into effect, but we can only hope it does sooner, rather than later.

‘Sketches for an Artificial Forest’ exhibition at Arts Centre The ‘Sketches for an Artificial Forest’ exhibition by artist Catriona Gallagher opens this Friday, November 10th, at Roscommon Arts Centre. The exhibition brings together Catriona’s ongoing research into the forms and histories of forestry plantations that have become a dominant element of Irish and UK landscapes over the past century. She explores how human design and management of intensive forestry have taken a fundamental feature of landscape and culture, as well as an apex ecological system, and made it uncanny, an artificial architecture for the extraction of natural resources. In film scenes, photographs, models and drawings we are reminded that a forestry plantation is not a forest. The exhibition also includes an ongoing film project entitled ‘Forest AI’, which is a made up of a series of walking interviews filmed with local residents, foresters,
ecologists and conservationists in Northumberland (UK), County Roscommon and County Leitrim. This film tracks the artist’s navigation through the complexity of forestry, where planting trees seems good on the surface but faces demands for change. ‘Sketches for an Artificial Forest’ holds several worlds in parallel – not only the worlds of pro- and anti-forestry, and private and public ownership, but also the real world of the documentary, and the imagined world of speculative fiction. Catriona Gallagher is a visual artist and filmmaker based in Athens, Greece. In 2022 Catriona was artist in residence as part of the Wings Programme at Roscommon Arts Centre. ‘Sketches for an Artificial Forest’ opens at 6 pm on Friday, November 10th, with a drinks reception at Roscommon Arts Centre. All are welcome to attend. The exhibition runs until December 22nd.
The Anam Gallery, Roscommon Town, is proud to announce its second exhibition for 2023: ‘A Mountain of Thoughts, Being Free, Walking Our Own Path, Oceans’ by local 13-year-old artist George Naughton, which was opened by Niall ‘Bressie’ Breslin on November 8th. One of the goals of The Anam Gallery is to have an annual youth exhibition, and this exhibit by George Naughton is the first such one to take place. One of George’s many talents is the manner in which he illustrates how art can open our hearts and minds to finding our truths and expressing ourselves. But he also shows us how to enjoy, experiment and be free… free to choose … free to live... free to be oneself… Despite living with a catastrophic and terminal muscle-wasting illness (Duchenne muscular dystrophy), George has found a way to express his thoughts and feelings through art. When he was twelve, his older brother Archie died of the same illness. George, understandably, struggled to express his profound loss, fear and grief. With the support of Anam Gallery’s Rita Oates, George began attaching words and titles to his art. It quickly became appar-

ent that George was processing his grief and struggles through this work. The collection of pieces being exhibited is unique, thought-provoking, and filled with hope. They challenge the viewer to reach their own interpretation/ conclusions, whilst sharing the central theme that we are entitled to our own thoughts and that it is okay to feel sad, lost or alone; that we must all strive to follow our own path, to share our own unique story, to be our own person but also never forget that we are all connected and valued. ‘Bressie’ Breslin to open the exhibition as he is aware of Niall’s enormous contribution to the national and international conversation regarding mental health. The Charity ‘Lust for Life’, founded by Niall, provides an invaluable resource and support for young people in Ireland and beyond. It empowers young people ‘to be effective guardians of their own mind – and to be the leaders that drive our society towards a better future’. Entry to the exhibition is free and all are welcome. Roscommon Solstice Choir 10th Anniversary Concert – thank you for the music! < JIMMY HOBAN SOLSTICE CHOIR PRO
The Roscommon Solstice Choir’s 10th Anniversary Concert took place in the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon on Friday, November 3rd, and was a resounding success. Playing to a full house, the choir and a host of guest stars gave a wonderful night of entertainment and brought much joy and happiness to a very appreciative audience. This community choir, which was formed in 2013, continues to go from strength to strength and saw this concert as an opportunity to thank everyone who has been instrumental in their success and supported them over the years. The audience was treated to a musical extravaganza and some showband nostalgia. Charlie McGettigan opened the show with a wonderful medley of songs, including ‘The Feet of the Dancer’, and was followed by Fr Kevin Fallon (Parish Priest of Roscommon), who is a noted musician and singer.
Frankie McDonald of Joe Dolan and the Drifters fame brought us back in time to the ‘Ballroom of Romance’ days. A great trumpet sound and medley of well-known showband classics had the audience toe-tapping and clapping hands at the same time. After the interval, it was the turn of Paul Healy, Editor of the Roscommon People. Paul delivered a wonderful oration accompanied by a video on the pride and spirit of Roscommon people and what it means to be from County Roscommon. Johnny Johnson performed ‘Land of the O’Connor’. This has become a wellknown Roscommon anthem and the audience joined in with gusto. Dave Lawlor, who is credited with the revival of the showbands in the 1990s, gave a wonderful performance of classics like ‘You Raise Me Up’ and the Dean Martin hit ‘That’s Amore’. The evening was rounded off with Johnny Carroll, who this year is celebrating 66 years in showbusiness. He

has recorded ‘Whispering Hope’ with the choir for the Galway Hospice and we were treated to the sight of the audience on their feet, waving their ‘lit up’ phones while singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. The choir, as well as performing some great individual numbers, provided the vocal backing for the guests throughout. A particular highlight of the night was the singing of Ave Maria and Nella Fantasia by the choir’s musical director Eimear Reynolds, who is recognised internationally as a most beautiful singer and has performed on many world stages. Both Eimear and her brother Andrew have been the musical directors and guiding lights of the choir over the ten years. Eugene Murphy has been MC for the choir since its inception and he kept the show going seamlessly from beginning to end. John F Hanley (Chairperson of Roscommon Solstice Choir) noted that the choir had come a long way since its
foundation in 2013 and complimented Marie Gillooly on her foresight in establishing it. He particularly thanked Andrew and Eimear Reynolds for their dedication and professionalism, Fr Kevin Fallon, and all the guests, the musicians, and the backstage crew. He wished to compliment everyone who had played a part in organising what he described as “a truly iconic night”. A raffle was also organised on the night, with the proceeds going to the Church Restoration Fund. The choir moves on from here with a series of events in store for Christmas. Four concerts are scheduled to take place as part of their winter programme: on December 3rd in St Patrick’s Church, Glenamaddy, on December 8th in St Colman’s Church, Claremorris, on December 10th in St Patrick’s Church, Knockcroghery, and on December 17th in Breffni Arms Hotel in Arva (Cavan). Also, on December 7th, the choir has been invited to sing at the turning on of the lights at Leinster House.

€3,190 raised for Sacred Heart Church Restoration Fund
A spokesperson for the Sacred Heart Church (Roscommon) Restoration Committee informed the Roscommon People that Friday night’s Solstice Choir concert had raised €3,190 for the church fund. The spokesperson thanked the choir for its very generous gesture, and also thanked the public for their support of the event. Further update to follow at a later stage.

Roscommon LEADER presentation and launch Roscommon LEADER Partnership is delighted to announce that Minister Anne Rabbitte will launch the Dare Erasmus+ Project ‘Diversities are Reviving Enterprises’, and also make a presentation on behalf of Roscommon LEADER Partnership to Roscommon branch, Down Syndrome Ireland, at an event on Friday, November 10th. The event will take place at 3 pm in the Roscommon LEADER Partnership Head Office, located in The Cube Flexispace, Lanesborough Road, Roscommon Town (F42 DX61). The Dare project objective is to create a new set of tools to raise
awareness among and improve the skills of European employers and inform those who instruct them about the moral and financial benefits that inclusiveness and diversity can deliver to small business and their employees. This will be achieved by giving the workforce market players, the VET sector, and SME support infrastructures the tools they need to create and execute inclusion and diversity plans that address the mounting strain on SMEs – increasing their resilience, competitiveness and survivability. The DARE Project will assist European SMEs in overcoming both
individual and systemic prejudices in the areas of e.g. age, race, ethnicity, gender, disability and sexual orientation, with the overarching objective to promote a fairer and more inclusive economy with equal opportunities for all. By enabling VET professionals to train SMEs in diversity-oriented organisational development to engage marginalised and discriminatory groups in a more inclusive labour market, DARE will address labour shortages supporting a more inclusive and diverse European economy. The Roscommon branch of Down Syndrome Ireland act as a support
and information hub for people with Down syndrome and their families in County Roscommon. The organisation provide an ‘allthrough-life’ supports to people with Down syndrome and their families with specialists in the areas of health, speech and language, early development, education (including adult education) and independence that enhance the lives of children and adults with Down syndrome across the county. On Friday, Roscommon LEADER Partnership will make a presentation to the Roscommon branch of Down Syndrome Ireland to assist them in their mission.

Connacht Rugby heroes Andy Friend and Paul Boyle are lending their support to a new video campaign by the Western Development Commission (WDC) to encourage people to relocate or return to the West of Ireland. A native of Australia, Friend served as Head Coach and Director of Rugby at Connacht from 2018 to 2023, while Dubliner Paul Boyle joined the Connacht Academy from Leinster in 2017 and has made 85 appearances for the Westerners, earning one full international cap for Ireland in that time. The pair speak glowingly in their testimonials of their experiences coming to the West as non-natives and their now-deep sense of connection to their adopted home. Boyle credits Connacht Rugby with giving him a platform to become a full international and hails the West of Ireland’s wild landscape and collegiate culture as key reasons why he plans to stay in the West after his retirement from the game. Friend points out that, as a professional rugby coach from Australia, he has lived all over the world, including London and Japan, but his spell in Connacht is the longest he has spent anywhere. The extended stay, Friend says, is testament to the quality of life, the landscape, and the people in the West of Ireland, adding that
his advice to those thinking of moving to the West is “embrace the conditions, embrace the lifestyle, and get out and meet the people”. Organic farm scheme reopened to new applicants – IFA IFA Organic Project Team Chair John Curran has welcomed the reopening of the Organic Farm Scheme (OFS) to new entrants. The scheme will close to applicants on Friday, December 8th. The budget for the OFS has increased again this year to €57 million, up €21 million on the €36 million allocation for 2023. The OFS last reopened in October 2022 and over 2000 new applicants entered the scheme, doubling the number of organic farms in Ireland. There are now approxi-
mately 180,000 hectares under organic production in Ireland, representing 4% of total agricultural land. “Ensuring that markets are available for additional organic production and that organic farmers receive a sustainable margin for their produce must be a priority and not the additional land base attracted into the system. We cannot have a situation where the market is saturated for existing farmers, or that any existing premium is lost,” said John Curran. “While acknowledging that significant investment
has been made on market development this year, it is also imperative that the Government continue to stimulate demand for organic produce in order to ensure there is a proper functioning market for organic farmers. “The launch of the new organic hub should help to prevent leakage from the system. The role of the hub is to act as a central platform connecting organic farmers and facilitating the buying and selling of organic livestock and produce across the country,” concluded Mr Curran.
Department calf options need much more discussion – IFA IFA National Dairy Committee Chair Stephen Arthur has said that much more discussion is needed before any changes are made to calf regulations. “A number of options were tabled by DAFM at the latest Calf Stakeholder Forum, held recently relating to the movement of calves,” he said. “Many of these proposals were not discussed at any significant length and absolutely no timeframe or specific proposals relating to increasing minimum movement age were agreed. “We are absolutely committed to ensuring that calf welfare is optimised and any measures or pro-
posals which will further strengthen this require strong consideration. However, many of the proposals suggested by DAFM simply will not deliver this but instead will place needless additional costs on farmers”. Of particular concern was the proposal tabled by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and the Marine (DAFM) to extend the number of days from which a calf can move offfarm, which IFA does not support. “The majority of stakeholders including ourselves all disagreed with the introduction of any such extension,” the IFA
National Dairy Committee Chair said. “Breeding strategies and calf management are much more important for the outcome of calves than blanket extension of regulations relating to minimum age or minimum weight. Furthermore, we also do not want to dictate what breeds farmers can and cannot use on their farm. Instead, we want to encourage farmers to adopt the breeding technologies available on the ground such as genotyping, sexed semen, and the use of high Dairy Beef Index bulls. Roscommon MART WATCH There was a very large entry of stock on offer at last Friday’s Special Bullock Sale with 670 on offer. Bullocks fetched an average of €2.86 per kilo up to €3.67 per kilo. There was also a good entry of dry cows and they made an average of €2.01 per kilo up to €2.49 per kilo. There was a large entry of top quality weanlings on offer at our show and sale held on Tuesday evening last with a very strong trade for both bulls and heifers. Bull weanlings fetched from an average of €3.13 per kilo up to €5.05 per kilo, while heifer weanlings made from an average of €3.12 per kilo up to €8.80.
There was a good attendance of customers at the ringside for both sales with online bidders also active. We had a similar number of sheep on offer at our weekly Sale of Lambs and Cast Ewes. Prices for finished lambs made up to €153. The tops for stag ewes fetched €145. Please note all sheep must be tagged with a full yellow EID tag set. Schools across Roscommon have come together to save a record number of used batteries for recycling during the last school year. Schools across the county participated in WEEE Ireland’s Schools Battery Recycling Competition, collecting the equivalent of 43,800 used AA batteries. Nationally, the equivalent of two million used AA batteries – the weight of around five school buses – has been diverted from landfill and recycled thanks to the nationwide schools battery initiative. A record amount of waste batteries were collected
from last October to March this year, and their precious materials recovered for re-use. Now, as it enters its 12th year, the country’s largest e-waste and battery recycling scheme is once again calling on primary and secondary students throughout Ireland to participate in the vital initiative, which also supports LauraLynn Children’s Hospice. The drive is being backed by TV and radio presenter Laura Woods, who was joined by one of this year’s winners – Scoil Naomh Pádraig in Ballyroan Dublin – to launch this year’s contest.
In addition to Scoil Naomh Pádraig, five other schools in Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, Tipperary and Wexford were crowned Battery Recycling Champions in the last school year, each receiving €2,000 in sports vouchers to reward their commitment to sustainability. The competition is open to all primary and secondary schools which collect at least ten full 5kg battery boxes in WEEE Ireland battery recycling counties. “Binning batteries is a big problem because the materials lost to landfill are increasingly in short
supply,” said Leo Donovan (CEO of WEEE Ireland). “Plus, the harm to the environment, including animals and plants, can often be severe. “This really important programme means students can play their part in preventing this”. As well as benefiting the environment, every battery recycled with WEEE Ireland also goes towards a donation fund for LauraLynn. There was a good selection of vintage cars and tractors at the recent annual MidRoscommon Vintage Run. Before the run took place, trophies were presented to the drivers of three different categories of vehicles. The trophy for best modern tractor went to Brian Carley for his Massey Ferguson. In the vintage class, Kevin Higgins was
awarded a trophy for his 1958 Fordson Major tractor. The best vintage car trophy went to David Binns for his Ford Anglia Estate. John O’Connor (chairperson of the club) presented the prizes. The club wishes to thank all who participated in the run, including the marshals, stewards and Gardaí, and also the registration team and caterers.

Murphy welcomes grant increase for septic tank upgrade
Senator Eugene Murphy has welcomed the decision by Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien to substantially increase the grant for septic tank upgrade. “The latest Government decision is, in my view, highly significant – particularly for rural counties like Roscommon and Galway, and adjoining areas”, said Senator Murphy. “It is going to assist people in rural areas with troubling septic tanks and will be a godsend for those developing vacant and derelict houses. Having had more than a little difficulty dealing with the challenge of Boyle in the recent county senior final, St Brigid’s can now set their sights on a run in the Connacht Club Championship and they begin that campaign with a game against the recently crowned Sligo champions Coolera-Strandhill this Sunday. St Brigid’s will go into the game as strong favourites to advance to a semi-final against the Leitrim champions Mohill, with the form book suggesting that Jerome Stack’s men should be able to negotiate this hurdle, particularly on home ground. However, the fright that they were given by Boyle in the recent county final should be a warning to the Roscommon standard-bearers that they will
have to perform well if they are to advance to the semi-final. Indeed if St Brigid’s were to be successful in this championship all their Connacht games would be played in Hyde Park, but that’s for another day. One step at a time, and a victory on Sunday must be attained first. Coolera-Strandhill recently won their first Sligo county title since 2005, defeating St Molaise Gaels by 0-11 to 0-8 in the final. (2023 was the first time in eight years that Tourlestrane were defeated in the Sligo senior championship; they were going for their 8th title on the trot). Coolera-Strandhill have a number of well-known players such as Luke Bree, Keelan Cawley, Peter Laffey and Ross Doherty, but their highest profile and most talented player is fullforward Niall Murphy, a class act who would get on any club or county team in the country. St Brigid’s will have to watch him very closely on Sunday, because he is a match-winner who is equally proficient off either foot, being deadly accurate from play and frees. As for St Brigid’s, it looks like
Brian Stack will be given the job of marking Niall Murphy, a clash which would have a major bearing on the outcome. Cormac Sheehy has been excellent all season in goal. His kick-outs have been a major reason for the success enjoyed by St Brigid’s. Ronan Stack, Ruaidhri Fallon and Alan Daly have also been very effective in the half-back line. Shane Cunnane and Eddie Nolan will be hoping to win the midfield battle, while up front Ben O’Carroll will lead the Brigid’s attack. Paul McGrath, Conor Hand, Ciaran Sugrue and Bobby Nugent will all be key players. With the likes of Brian Derwin and Mark Daly waiting in the wings, it’s clearly a very strong Brigid’s panel. Football at this time of the year tends to be low-scoring and weather conditions are always a factor. However, the Dr Hyde Park pitch is an excellent surface and it should suit St Brigid’s. If they can play to their strengths up front they should have enough to advance to the Connacht semi-final. Prediction: St Brigid’s.

Having won their first Roscommon junior title in 30 years recently, St Michael’s will face stiff opposition in the Connacht Championship this weekend when they play Menlough in Tuam. Galway and Mayo clubs have traditionally dominated this champi-
onship and it will take a mighty effort from the Roscommon champions to advance in this tie. Menlough, who beat a good Clonbur team in the Galway final, have a number of very experienced and talented players in their team. The likes of Barry Laheen, Jason O’Neill and Robert Hughes have been on the scene for a while, but Menlough have a number of younger players who have also shone this year. St Michael’s had a dream championship in Roscommon. They swept to the title in some style with Fiachra Henry the scoring hero. But this test will be a step up from what they have
experienced in Roscommon. St Michael’s will need all their experienced players to come to the fore. Apart from Henry, they will look to players like Neil Cox, Mick King, Cathal Guckian, Alan O’Hara, Liam Conlon and Jack Lane to lead the way if St Michael’s are to advance. It would be a great boost to Roscommon club football if Michael’s can progress. On their best form, they have a real chance. But tradition and the form book would suggest that the Galway side are favourites. There won’t be a lot in it. Prediction: Menlough.

The Creggs U-14s boys team who comfortably defeated Galway Bay RFC in Dangan last weekend.
Creggs 1sts face Connemara on Saturday Junior Rugby J1A league: This Saturday Creggs’ first team take on Connemara All Blacks at home in the J1A league with kick-off at 5.30 pm. This is always one of the bigger matches on the rugby calendar and big crowds are expected. Please arrive early and follow the directions for parking, etc. by official stewards. Creggs U-17s: Creggs U-17s hosted Carrick-on-Shannon in a friendly in Creggs last week. It was a great chance to blood the new players that joined the squad this year. Carrick-on-Shannon started well and dominated most of the first half which left the half-time score 14-3 to Carrick. Creggs emptied the bench at the start of the second half and started strong after the break but the young Leitrim team proved just too strong for Creggs on the night and won 35-10. The Creggs lads were disappointed in themselves but the game was a great learning curve for the new recruits. Boys U-14s: Last weekend the Creggs U-14s boys travelled to Dangan to take on Galway Bay RFC in the league. Creggs dominated the game from start to finish and won 41-5. It was a great team performance with everyone
playing their part. Boys U-13s: In a one-sided affair, Creggs U-13s had a fantastic 43-0 win against visitors Ballina RFC last weekend. Ballina started well but very quickly Creggs took control and never looked back. This was a terrific display by this team once again with two debutants for the club – Shane Smyth and Fionn Harte – wearing the jersey for the first time. The team now plays Corinthians in Galway this weekend. Boys U-16s: Creggs U-16s boys Division Two team played Monivea in a friendly in Creggs on Sunday. It was a tough day for the home team as they failed to score in a 59 points to 0 defeat. This Creggs side have two more games in their league. They play Claremorris Colts next Sunday in Creggs. Girls U-14s: Creggs U-14s girls played Ballinasloe last Sunday in the league on a lovely morning in Creggs. It was a very close game throughout but Creggs came away with a 14-10 win. Well done to all involved. Boys U-15s: A disappointing result for Creggs U-15s against Corinthians RFC in the league last Sunday in Creggs. The final score was Creggs 12 Corinthians 24. Their final league game is home to Westport in two weeks’ time.
Mini Blitz v Sligo RFC: Creggs RFC mini group welcomed Sligo RFC to Creggs on Saturday morning for a blitz. 240 Creggs players were joined by 140 Sligo players to make up a great morning’s rugby. Well done to all coaches and helpers as days like today would not happen without huge organisation and pre-planning. Everybody played their part and as a result the children went home happy – and a bit muddy! Lotto: No winner of this week’s jackpot. The lucky dip winner was Theresa Rowe. Buccaneers fall to fourth straight defeat Buccaneers’ disappointing start in the Energia AllIreland League continued with a fourth straight defeat when going down 45-19 to Old Belvedere in their Division 1B game played in front of a decent attendance at Dubarry Park on Saturday. The game was decided in the final 15 minutes of the first half with Old Belvedere scoring three converted tries, which meant they went in at the break with a 26-0 advantage. Buccaneers came more into the game following the change of ends and even though Old Belvedere scored again to give them a 33-0 lead, Buccaneers kept working and finally got reward for their efforts scoring a converted try in the 65th minute. Aoife announced as finalist in ‘Inspiring the Nation Awards’
Castlerea’s double Olympian boxer Aoife O’Rourke has been announced as a finalist in Permanent TSB’s Inspiring the Nation Awards. The Tarmon fighter has been named as a finalist alongside her fellow double boxing Olympian Kellie Harrington and three other Irish athletes – Sarah Lavin (Athletics), Rhasidat Adeleke (Athletics) and Amy Wall (Kickboxing). The award recognises the Team Ireland athlete role model that most encourages and motivates others in their sport, and in wider society. The winner will be announced at the Team Ireland Olympic Ball which takes place this Saturday in Dublin. Aoife qualified for next year’s Paris Olympics after winning gold in the European Games which were held earlier this year.

ATHLONE Congratulations to Sheila BuckleyByrne (20) who won the Power Property Women’s Open with 36 pts. Triona Clinton (16) came second with 35 pts, while Maeve Holmes (16) came third with 34 pts. The competition took place on the weekend of October 28th. The Chica 15-hole women’s competition, which took place on Saturday 28th, Sunday 29th and Tuesday 31st of October, was won by Carol McGetrick (26) with 28 pts. The 9-hole club competition was won by Bernie Stapleton (22) on 18 pts while Geraldine Boland won the weekly ‘97 Club competition with 25 pts.
BOYLE The draw for the matchplay stage of the King Harmon Cup tournament was made recently and with the first round of matches having already been played, the pairings for the next round are as follows: Charlie O’Donnell v Colin Garvin, Lochlainn Conboy v Terry Canning, Dessie Murphy v Brendan Gaffney and Ross Andrew v Lorcan Egan. The Men’s Club AGM took place on November 5th and the Ladies’ AGM is up next on November 12th, with the overall Club Management AGM on December 5th. All the AGMs will be held at 5 pm in the clubhouse on the appointed date. Liam Whyte’s captain’s outing for the men takes place this weekend to Esker Hills Golf Club on the Saturday and Mount Temple on Sunday. C’mon The Town
of Liz Dwyer. Liz was a true stalwart of Boyle Golf Club for several decades, and she had served on the club’s committees in several capacities including Captain, President and Treasurer. She was a key member of the Boyle team that won a Connacht Mixed Foursomes title in 1998, one of the club’s greatest days. The club extends its deepest sympathies to the Carty family and most especially to her husband Jimmy Dwyer.
CARRICK-ONSHANNON The club would like to extend its sympathy to the family and friends of past lady captain, Mary Menton, who passed away recently. Mary was a very popular and hard-working member of the club. May she rest in peace.
ROSCOMMON Congratulations to Roger Hynes who won the recent men’s 18-hole competition with 42 pts. The senior ladies played for their Christmas hamper over 9 holes last Thursday, November 2nd, with Noreen O’Grady winning the competition. Liam Bagnell won the men’s 15hole competition with 35 pts which took place over the weekend of the 4th of November. The Men’s AGM will be held on Friday, November 17th at 7.30 pm in clubhouse. The Ladies’ AGM will be held on Sunday, November 19th at 6 pm in the clubhouse which will then be followed by the main Club AGM at 7.30 pm on the same evening.

Cup finals On Friday, our U-18s boys team play Moylough in the cup final under lights in Lecarrow at 7.45 pm. Our Town 1 U-16s side beat Ballymoe to claim the Premier Division Cup Final recently. After conceding an early goal, Town scored two through Jonathan Ben Martin and Sam Hannon. An unfortunate own goal saw Ballymoe equalise, but then the key moment of the game came early in the second half when Ethan Turkington was fouled in the box, the opposition goalkeeper was shown red and Ethan slotted home to give Town the lead. With Ballymoe down to ten, Town capitalised. Jonathan Ben Martin and Craig Glennon scored to seal the win. Thanks to John Horan for managing the team this season.

Alloha reappears at Clonmel today Horses for Courses Not seen since winning the 2022 Punchestown Gold Cup nearly 19 months ago, the Willie Mullins-trained Allaho turns out today (Thursday) in the Clonmel Oil Chase where he meets only three other runners, Mouse Morris’s French Dynamite, his stable mate Janidil and John Ryan’s Grange Walk. With his class and being odds-on favourite at 1/3, he is very difficult to oppose. A referral hearing into the controversial race involving two Denis Hogan-trained horses at Dundalk more than three years ago collapsed when the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board decided not to offer any evidence. It is just not good enough to hold charges for three years over an individual.

Denis O’Regan makes history Jockey Denis O’Regan made history on Monday winning at Hereford onboard Fiveonefive for Navan trainer Cian Collins. O’Regan has now won on every active national hunt track on both sides of the Irish Sea. The 41-year-old has waited more than three years to conquer the last frontier and had only returned from a three-month lay-off at Cork on Sunday.
Tara hat-trick hero for Athleague Athleague are through to the Connacht Camogie Final (Fr Vincent Lawless Cup) following a comfortable win over Tooreen of Mayo last Sunday. The game was played in Athleague. Tara Naughton was the hat-trick hero for the recently crowned Roscommon champions, netting 3-2 as Athleague triumphed by 3-7 to 0-5. Following Sunday’s win, Athleague will now face Galway champions, Shamrock’s, in the final on Sunday, November 19th.
Harrington still gracing golf summit It’s many years since I came to the conclusive view that Padraig Harrington is the greatest Irish sportsperson of all time (as of now). I give him the nod, without hesitation really, above all other outstanding candidates… including Sonia O’Sullivan, Johnny Sexton, Brian O’Driscoll, Roy Keane, and the person I place second… Katie Taylor. Harrington’s achievement in winning three golf majors remains a monumental one for an Irish sportsperson. But those brilliant wins have been accompanied by numerous other victories across the world during a long and highly successful, honour-laden career.
This weekend Racing this weekend begins this afternoon (Thursday) over the jumps at Clonmel. Tapes away for the first at 12.30 pm. The postponed two days of jump racing in Down Royal last weekend has been rescheduled for tomorrow afternoon (Friday) starting at 12.17 pm, featuring the Grade 3 Bottlegreen Hurdle. There is evening racing on the allweather at Dundalk at 5 pm. On Saturday, the second day in Down Royal features the Grade 1 Ladbrokes Champion Chase, with a 12.35 pm start. There’s also racing at Gowran Park, starting at 12.20 pm. On Sunday, Naas hosts national hunt racing featuring the Listed Brown Lad Hurdle and the Grade 3 Barberstown Castle Chase with an early start (11.40 am). The flat racing season ended at The Curragh last Sunday with Colin Keane winning

O’Brien won two races at the Breeders Cup meeting in Santa Anita, enjoying a one-two in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf as Unquestionable beat Mountain Bear in the Grade One race on Friday and mission accomplished for Auguste Rodin, who was given a brilliant and perfect ride by Ryan Moore in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. While down under, Willie Mullins thought that with Vauban and stablemate Absurde it was his best chance to win the two-mile Melbourne Cup. The well supported Absurde, with Zac Purton in the saddle, hit the front 2f down, but faded to finish seventh at 8/1, whereas Vauban faded in the straight to finish a disappointing 14th under Ryan Moore. The race was won by
the Australian-trained Without A Fight ridden by Mark Zahra, last year’s winning jockey. Terrestrial television coverage on Saturday features ten British races, five from
Wincanton featuring two Grade 2 races, the Rising Stars Novice Chase, and the Elite Hurdle, and three on the all-weather from Newcastle as well as two from Aintree (on ITV4).
SPORTS DESK Paul Healy I recall at a certain point during Tiger Woods’ peak that Harrington was the one player who really could go head to head with the American superstar (at least from time to time). There was (and is) huge mutual respect between them. What has been fascinating about Harrington too is the longevity of his career. He won for the first time on tour in 1996, and was still winning over 20 years later. Now that he’s spending a considerable amount of time on the PGA Tour Champions circuit in the US, there is the prospect of Harrington setting new records in that over-50s’ arena. His victory in last weekend’s TimberTech Championship in Florida – by seven strokes – was his 6th win on the PGA Tour Champions since he joined in June of 2022. That’s an amazing impact for Harrington to have made in such a short period. Multiple winner Steve Stricker still has a better record, but our man could potentially surpass the American over the next few years. Harrington’s six wins in just 17 months have been by a combined winning margin of 20 shots, and he’s been runner-up a few times too. Harrington (52) recently said he still has ambitions to win another major – I wouldn’t for one moment rule it out.

The highly reputed Japan Karate Association (JKA) now have a branch in Roscommon. Founded by the man who introduced traditional karate to mainland Japan from Okinawa, Gichin Funakoshi (Sensei), and with its headquarters in Tokyo, the JKA teach traditional Shotokan karate in its pure form. Instructor at JKA Roscommon, Barry Tapster, holds the rank of 5th dan black belt (Godan) and has been instructing for over 20 years as well as having represented Ireland internationally. Barry has trained with all the great Shotokan masters including Senseis Enoeda, Osaka, Tanaka and current World Chief Instructor Ueki Sensei. Training takes place on Wednesday evenings at the Hyde Centre, Athlone Road, Roscommon; from 6 pm-6.45 pm for U-16s and from 6.45 pm-8 pm for 16 and over. Gradings will be conducted by JKA Ireland Chief Instructor Sensei Noel Casey (7th dan). Training is always done barefoot, in the Japanese traditional manner, and loose sports clothes are all that’s required at first.

Steven in for Rowing Ireland award Paralympic rower Steven McGowan from Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon, has been nominated for the Rowability Award of the Year in this year’s Rowing Ireland Awards. Steven and his rowing partner Katie O’Brien from Clarinbridge in Co. Galway qualified for Paris 2024 during the World Championships in Serbia in September. The Roscommon man was involved in a life-changing singlevehicle crash in Fairymount in September 2017 which left him with a severe spinal injury. After a long period of rehabilitation, he took up rowing less than two years ago to join Katie in the mixed double in the hope of qualifying for the 2024 Paralympics. The winners will be announced at the Rowing Ireland Awards on Saturday, November 18th in Portlaoise.
