After enjoying a long, hot summer, a warm and pleasant fall, the recent dropping temperatures have many of us looking back on the accomplishments of the summer while planning more indoor activities for the winter season. We have 27 new Water Title holders from both the Ontario and Alberta Trials. Please look at all the results on the following pages. While water work can a great deal of fun, working with our dogs to accomplish what they were bred to do, it requires a great deal of dedication and focus, and finding a venue and equipment to train. Congratulations to all the new Title Holders. Following up on2021/ 2022 results our breed has once again performed admirably holding 4 and 7 of the top ten Agility spots in the Working Group respectively and 1 and 5 of the top Obedience spots in the Working Group respectively, Well done! Congratulations as well to the top Conformation Winners for 2021 and 2022 – see placements and photos on the following pages. As the end of the year approaches Board terms will be ending for some and new Board members are needed to fill the roster of for the 2024-25 term. The by-laws require 7 members including the President, Vice President and Secretary /Treasurer (or separately as we have now) and 4 Regional Directors from 4 regions of the country. Currently we have representation from the Atlantic Provinces, Quebec, Ontario and the Prairies. If you or if you know anyone who would be interesting in contributing to your Club by Board participation, please contact myself or Roslyn Eskind (roslyn@pwdcc.org) with any questions what Board work entails. Look for the email coming soon with an application form to make the process simple.

It was cold and had been raining but the hearty Canadians were out braving the elements to get in their practice time at the site. Everyone was good natured even though the weather was unpleasant. I just thought “Wow, what a nice group of people”. My favorable opinion of the Ontario group never wavered throughout the weekend. Everyone was pleasant to both myself and my friend. More importantly, they were kind to their dogs. I watched teams struggle with everything from dogs having zoomies to performing various parts of the exercises. The human components kept a good attitude with their companions and were supportive of them. As a judge and as a competitor I hear and see people get upset with their dogs when they believe nobody is looking. I’ve seen dogs being pushed when it is obvious they are unwilling or unable to continue, NOT in Ontario. I was so pleased to see that when the dogs

said they were done the handlers listened. THIS is being a team. Listening to your teammate and treating them kindly. You can’t have a trial without stewards and the Ontario group has plenty of them who were ready and eager to learn. It was great to see so many newer members interested in learning more about our sport. The first day I did lots of steward training so things took longer than usual, but by the second day they were all on it. The stewards were pleasant and were willing to listen to and follow instructions. I was thrilled to have so many people pinching in to help make the trial as success-

ful as possible for the participants. What I observed was a need for more basic obedience training. Several teams struggled with their dog not wanting to sit before an exercise. Handlers asked for a sit several times but the dog continued to do its own thing. They then put their dogs in a sit by pushing on their rear down. This is not good for the dog, will likely not teach the dog to sit when cued, and is not necessary. Dogs need to be at their handler’s side under control. This can be in any position. Given that we are positive
