ROSIE MARTIN PORTFOLIO

Ruth Campbell & Co

I joined Ruth Campbell & Co in April 2025, contributing to a varied portfolio spanning residential landscapes, educational play environments, and commercial headquarters such as Tetra Pak in Lund, South Sweden. Working closely with Ruth has enabled a strong exchange of ideas, supporting both design development and my continued professional growth.

2025 Alleyn’s School

Ruth Campbell & Co has been working with Alleyn's School in South East London to re-develop the early years reception playground. For this scheme we conducted group workshops with the children to encourage their engagement with the project.

I developed three design options from this session for the Nature Play Ground. One focuses on gathering around a table, the second uses permaculture style design to create gathering spaces, and the final chosen design combines both these ideas with a pavilion in the centre, and other smaller gathering and activity spaces dispersed throughout the space.

2025 Tetra Pak Lund Campus Style Guide

Since 2023, Ruth Campbell & Co. has been leading the landscape redesign of Tetra Pak's head office and manufacturing campus in Lund, southern Sweden. Working in close collaboration with Tetra Pak, the practice has developed a phased Landscape Strategy that enhances employee and visitor experience while strengthening ecological value and biodiversity across the site.

As part of this project, I produced a comprehensive Style Guide for the client, synthesising two years of site observations, usage analysis, design precedents, and evolving proposals into a clear framework for the next phase of development.

As visualised below, the guide is structured around

three key themes identified through earlier work - Spatial Typologies, Landscape Strategies, and Character Zones.

I brought these elements together to create a Design Strategy Matrix document, a tool designed to guide future decision-making for the landscape design and to ensure coherence as the project progresses. Spatial Typologies

2025 LFA ‘Square’ Camden High Street: Ruth Campbell X Sandwich Club

In May 2025 Ruth Campbell & Co and Sandwich Club collaboratively entered the LFA ‘Square’ Camden competition for which we were short-listed. Our developed response looked to create woodland glades on Camden High Street, creating opportunities for play, rest, shade, increased planting and spaces for Camden Council to conduct research about their plans to pedestrianise the street.

For this project I supplied the short-listed concept design and written response, and developed the design of the woodland glade interventions, including the planting design. We worked with community engagement specialist Alissa Ruzavina to create a design strategy which brought meaningful and collaborative input from the local community to our design interventions.

I oversaw the running of this competition proposal by project managing the work and bringing together the separate businesses and freelancer (Alissa) to create a coordinated design response, document and presentation to the panel. This involved working flexibly across different team member’s schedules, directing tasks and issuing feedback.

2022 - 2024 The Hithe Community Garden

Garden design, build and establishment of a sustainable community garden

From August 2022 I led on creating The Hithe Community Garden, a key part of The Hithe meanwhile project, due to stay in situ for 10 years in Rotherhithe, South London.

For this project fundraised £17,500 via public funding opportunities to create a garden and creative workshop programme for the local people of Rotherhithe to enjoy the outside space.

I used permaculture principles to design the garden, creating Hugel mounds to form perennial beds. These were a response to the parameters of the site which included not being able to dig down (the site sits directly over the overground station and adjacent to the Rotherhithe Tunnel). Additionally the mounds are very successful at retaining moisture, responding to the increasingly hot summers London is experiencing.

I started building the garden with the local community in July 2023, holding weekly gardening sessions with local residents from the area and worked with Unfold Architects to co-design and build a pergola with the volunteers.

The planting style is currently a blend of cottage garden style annuals and perennials, combined with different fruits and vegetables as requested by the volunteers.

2023 LJ Works

Planting plan and ecological strategy for BREEAM assessment

As part of the landscape demise for this recently delivered MWS site I created an ecological strategy and planting plan for LJ Works. I was briefed to create a design incorporating native plants and pollinators into a scheme as part of the site’s submission for BREEAM assessment. The design includes tall plants and climbers along the site boundary facing the busy road to help screen the intimate space from passers by.

2022 The Nest Care Centre

Landscape design for a farm based day care centre

Sandwich Club were brought on as landscape consultants with Strom Architects for The Nest Care Centre project, a centre designed for young people in Suffolk experiencing bad mental health. The landscape design paid attention to patient’s overall experience at the centre, including the journey from car to front door, and the building’s relationship with the garden as an indoor -outdoor classroom.

I designed the spaces to both be intimate as to create areas to linger and enjoy the garden whilst avoiding obscuring any spaces with planting or furniture as required to ensure the safety of the patients.

I zoned the master plan to create a cohesive rural, semi-agricultural mix of uses including animal paddocks, a productive garden, enclosed care centre garden, and public pond space with farm shop spill out.

2021 SET Woolwich Garden

Garden design and build for SET art studio

In 2021 SET approached SWC to collaborate to creating a community garden which could provide restorative green space for the existing Woolwich residents and the new arts community. For this project I worked between the client (SET) and the design team (SWC) to achieve the project outcomes.

Once built, I worked with SET to create an art / gardening program which could be used to activate community interest and use of the space. This involved creating a detailed and costed arts and horticulture event program, engaging the work of local facilitators and community participants within Woolwich based community groups and schools.

2021 The Old House Project

Garden design and community build schedule for heritage site

SWC was approached to develop an ecological garden design and community build schedule by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB). I worked with MFA architects on a proposal to create a space which could develop over time as a productive, educational space into a private garden.

2020 Canary Wharf

Design for commercial waterfront

This project involved creating an identity for a new commercial waterfront space, taking inspiration from the industrial history of the site. I was drawn to the historical dock structures originally at work in this part of London and their sculptural characteristics. I incorporated these features into new sculptures along the waterfront, developed from hand sketch to 3D rendered model using Rhino, Vray and Photoshop. Further to this I assisted in developing the whole design of this site, paying particular attention to how industrial materiality can be created by using recycled or salvaged building materials.

2019 Fisherman’s Wharf

Commercial roof-top garden design

For this project I developed an Art Deco design language for a roof garden, part of a mixed use development. I designed bespoke canopies, planters and water features with high end materials. I wanted to create a glamorous atmosphere for this space, fusing together eastern and western influences. To create these images I used Rhino and Vray, Photoshop and Illustrator.
