AttheendofFebruary,IdecidednottowearmycoatwhenIwasgoingtowork.WhenIlefthome, mycartoldmeitwas31°andIwasnotcold.ThishadmewonderingwhyIamnotcoldinFebruary, butwhenitis31°inOctober,I’malwaysputtingonmywintercoatandglovesbecauseit’sfreezing outside.

Ilearnedtherearescientificreasonswhywearecolderinthefallandwarmerinlatewinter/spring. OctoberfeelscolderthanMarchbecauseourbodiesareadaptingtothefallingtemperaturesafter summer.InMarch,ourbodieshavealreadyacclimatedtotheextremecoldofwinter,making31° feelmild.

Humidityimpactshowourbodiesreacttothecold.Octoberairisdryerwhichcausesfaster evaporationofmoisturefromourskin.Itisalsooftenwindierwhichincreasestherateofheatloss fromourskin.Thehumidityandwindmakeuscolder.

TheangleofthesuninOctoberisalsolowerinthesky,providinglessdirectsolarradiationtowarm usup.InMarchthesunishigher,providingmoreheat,evenifthetemperatureislower. Eventhegroundtemperaturehasanimpactonhowwarmwefeel.Inthefallthe groundiscoolingwhileinthespringthegroundiswarmingup.

Minnesota’sStateFlower:ATrueNorthStarBeauty

Minnesota’sstatefloweristhebeautifulpinkandwhitelady’sslipper,oneofthemostuniqueand eye-catchingwildflowersinourstate.ThisrarenativeorchidwasofficiallychosenasMinnesota’s stateflowerin1902,anditsbrightpink,slipper-shapedbloommakesiteasytoseewhyitearned thathonor.

Thelady’sslipperismorethanjustpretty—it’salsoincrediblypatient!Thisplantgrowsveryslowly andcantake4to16yearsbeforeproducingitsfirstbloom.Onceestablished,however,itcanlive fordecades,withsomeplantslasting50yearsormore.IttypicallybloomsinlateJunetoearlyJuly, makingitaspecialsignthatsummerhastrulyarrivedinMinnesota.

Thoughtheplantcanproducehundredsofthousandsoftinyseedsinayear,itremains uncommonbecauseitneedsjusttherighthabitattothrive!Youcanfindpinkandwhitelady’s slippersinbogs,swamps,wetmeadows,anddampwoodsthroughoutMinnesota wherethe habitatstayscoolandmoist.
