Welcome readers to the “News from the Steeple Center”, a publication for 55 plus/seniors in the Rosemount community. The Steeple Center houses the majority of the programs and events for those 55 plus. Programs are offered by the City of Rosemount Parks & Rec and the Rosemount Area Seniors.

Osceola Train Ride*

Enjoy the perfect fall day with a ride on a historical train operated by the Minnesota Transportation Museum! Return to 1948 as you ride on a vintage train from Osceola to Marine on St. Croix. Traveling high on the bluffs, enjoy the beautiful woodlands full of wildlife in the backwaters. Cross the St. Croix River on a Swing Bridge that used to open to let the Steamboats pass through. An onboard box lunch includes a turkey sandwich with tomato, lettuce, chips, cookie, and a beverage. On the way home, we will stop at Pine Tree Apple Orchard to shop. Each fall they have many different apple varieties to choose from as well as fabulous apple bakery products.

“Million Dollar Quartet” at the Old Log Theatre*

Bus leaves Community Center at 10:45am and returns at approximately 4:30pm This trip will take us to the Old Log Theatre in Excelsior for a great meal and a great show! We will start with lunch in the Old Log Dining Room, which will include a choice of 1) bone-out short rib with mashed potatoes, green beans and au jus, 2) chicken breast with roasted red potatoes, green beans and a sherry cream sauce, 3) vegetarian pasta made with house marinara and fresh vegetables. All meals include rolls, coffee, tea, and dessert. After lunch we will move into the theater for a performance of “Million Dollar Quartet”. This Tony Award winning musical captures the memorable day when four Rock n’ Roll greats made music history. On December 4, 1956, an auspicious twist of fate brought together Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley at Sun Records storefront studio in Memphis, TN. The man who made it happen was the "Father of Rock n’ Roll," Sam Phillips, who discovered them all. This was the only occasion the four legends-to-be played together, and it has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time.

Bus leaves Community Center at 9:30am and returns at approximately 10:00pm Head north to celebrate the holiday season! After a comfort stop on the way, our first destination will be Blackwoods Restaurant in Duluth for lunch. Locally owned and family-operated since the early 90s, everything on the menu is fresh and made from scratch into slow-cooked classic meals. You will have a choice of 1) chicken pot pie simmered with fresh carrots, peas, potatoes and pearl onions with a flaky golden pie crust and served with side of cranberry chutney, or 2) homestyle meatloaf covered in rich gravy and served with mashed potatoes. Both options come with fresh baked cornbread, house made sweet butter, a petite dessert and a beverage. After lunch, we will head to the famed Glensheen Mansion. The small rooms of the estate will be decorated for the holiday season, and the tour will allow guests to view the family living and work spaces, showcasing original interiors. Stories of the Congdon family and others who lived and worked at Glensheen bring this magnificent mansion to life. Our final stop will be at Bayfront Festival Park to experience “Bentleyville Tour of Lights.” Local volunteers work for weeks to put together a magical place to celebrate the holiday season. Walk through the remarkable display with millions of lights, Christmas trees, music and see Santa’s helpers strolling about. There is a gift store inside a warm building and an open-air merchandise area with several fire pits. Throughout the 20-acre area, there is complimentary hot cocoa, coffee, popcorn, cookies and marshmallows that you can roast over the fires. We will top off the day with a quick stop for a snack (on own) at Tobies in Hinckley.
