National Hot Chocolate Day Steeple Center Open House Wednesday, January 31 1:00—2:30pm Cost: FREE! Steeple Center Lobby Escape the winter blues and cozy up next to the fireplace in the Steeple Center lobby where we will be celebrating National Hot Chocolate Day on January 31st! We will have a hot chocolate bar set up with fun toppings to choose from. Grab a drink and a board game and enjoy the afternoon at the Steeple Center!

As a special bonus, you’ll be able to enjoy some delicious hot chocolate in the lobby as part of our National Hot Chocolate Day celebration. No registration is required to attend. Wednesday, January 10 9:00am—1:00pm Register By: January 3 Cost: $24 Steeple Center, Room 200 We have partnered with the MN Highway Safety Research Center to offer driver improvement courses for mature drivers. Upon completion of this course, drivers 55+ may be entitled to a 10% discount on their auto insurance. This 4-hr refresher program is open to anyone who has taken an 8-hour course within the last 3 years.

Winter Weather Policy As a reminder, the Steeple Center will close when ISD 196 (Rosemount, Apple Valley, Eagan) cancels school for winter weather. When ISD 196 calls for a delayed start or early release to the school day, the Steeple Center will remain open with normal hours. The one exception to this policy will be if schools are closed on a luncheon day, the Steeple Center will remain open and the luncheon will go on as scheduled. *Requires pre-registration. Rosemount Area Seniors Information

Monthly Luncheon* Tuesday, January 2 Register By: December 26 $15 for members/$17 for non-members 11:30am Lunch 12:15pm Entertainment Steeple Center, Assembly Hall Join us for a delicious pork roast dinner and dessert catered by House of Coates. The after lunch entertainment will be a safety presentation by RPD Officer Ruesink! Preregistration and payment is required. Registration options are listed on page two.

Sunshine Service

Please contact Alan Kohls at 952-2016735, if you know of an RAS member who could use a little “Sunshine” greeting. And we could all use a little extra sunshine right about now!

Reminder—2024 Luncheon Cost Due to overall increasing costs, House of Coates had to raise the prices of their catered luncheons provided to RAS. This change occurred over the summer. At the time, the Advisory Board made the decision not to immediately pass the new prices on to its memberships, but the Board did vote in September to increase the fee starting in January 2024 to reflect the new rates being charged by House of Coates. Starting with the January luncheon, the new cost will be $15 for RAS members and $17 for non-members. We feel very grateful that House of Coates works hard to keep costs as low as possible and continues to serve as our caterer!

Friday, January 19, 7:00pm Steeple Center, Room 100 $1/person Knowledgeable players of all ages are welcome. Registration starts at 6:45 p.m. and play begins at 7 p.m. sharp! The cost is $1, which is used as prize money.

There are many ways to get involved with the Rosemount Area Seniors at the Steeple Center. Here is a list of some of the current opportunities. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions, would like more details or if you are interested in any of these positions. Upcoming Trips: Registration will open December 4

German History Tour* Thursday, January 25 Registration Deadline: Thursday, January 4 Cost - $87/person Bus leaves Community Center at 9:15am and returns at approximately 4:00pm This trip will take us to downtown Minneapolis where a tour guide will give us an insightful look at the history of the German migration to Minnesota. They influenced cultural organizations, businesses, politics, and the Catholic and Lutheran churches in the metro area. Germans were the largest ancestry group in Minnesota according to the 2000 census and are also the largest single immigrant group in Minnesota history. Stops will be made at some interesting Germanic-American sites, and we will learn about things like the Christmas Tree tradition, breweries, Minnesota 13 whiskey, grasshoppers, and amazing bakeries. After the tour we will head to Gluek’s Restaurant in Minneapolis for a German-style meal. Choice of: 1) Schweineschnitzle Spaetzle, a premium center-cut pork loin tenderized and encrusted with seasoned marble rye breadcrumbs, fried and topped with a classic German-style cream sauce & fresh scallions served over buttered spaetzle or 2) Handdipped wild caught Walleye in our Gluek Pilsener beer batter & served over a mound of fries with coleslaw and dill-caper tartar sauce on the side. Wrap up the day with a stop at Aki’s Bread Haus, a traditional German bakery to purchase baked goods.

Hocokata Ti & Shakopee History* Thursday, February 22 Registration Deadline: Monday, January 22 Cost - $82/person Bus leaves Community Center at 9:15am and returns at approximately 4:00pm Arrive at Hocokata Ti (ho-cho-kah-tah-tee) in Shakopee for a guided walking tour through the exhibits. This is the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s (SMSC) cultural center and gathering space. It is used to interpret and encourage traditional Mdewakanton Dakota cultural heritage, language, and history by sustaining this inherent knowledge for SMSC members through exhibitions, preservation, and education. After the tour, spend time in the Hocokata Ti gift shop. It features a variety of Native-made art, books, music, beaded and quilled items, and craft supplies that build upon the cultural center’s mission to educate visitors about the Dakota people. We will then have lunch at Ruby’s Family Restaurant in Shakopee for the luncheon combo special with a small salad, cup of soup, half sandwich, beverage and cookie or bar. After lunch we will go to the Scott County Historical Museum. Take time to explore the artifacts and archives that reveal the story of Scott County.

“Hank & My Honky Tonk Heroes” at Paramount Theater* Tuesday, March 5 Registration Deadline: Monday, January 29 Cost - $95/person Bus leaves Community Center at 9:30am and returns at approximately 5:15pm Our day will start with lunch at D. Michael B’s Resort Bar & Grill in St. Michael/Albertville where you will have a choice of: 1) seven layer meatloaf (half portion) with layers of mild garlic mashed potatoes, hearty meatloaf, cheese and beef gravy topped with crispy onion rings and served with toasted ciabatta or 2) walleye sandwich breaded and fried, served with lettuce, tomato, lemon, tarter sauce and fries. After lunch we will head to the Paramount Theatre in St. Cloud, a turn-of-the-century historic 700-seat theater that was renovated in 1998. Visit the Visual Arts Center, located in the lower level of the Paramount Theatre. Next door is the Paramount Gallery & Gift store featuring Minnesota artists in all mediums. We will then spend the afternoon enjoying “Hank & My Honky Tonk Heroes”! There is only one Hank Williams, and only one actor who can bring him to life, Jason Petty. Jason re-creates such Williams' hits as "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", "Your Cheatin' Heart", "Hey Good Lookin'" and many more. But this astonishing show is more than just a Hank Williams tribute. Jason pays tribute to stars that influenced Hank and those stars that Hank influenced such as Jimmie Rodgers, Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubb, the Carter Family and more.

Holiday Cheer—Bingo!*

Wednesday, December 20, 1-2:30pm Register By: Friday, December 15th Cost: FREE Come and Deck the Halls with us at the Steeple Center for our 7th annual Holiday Cheer party. This year we will celebrate with some good oldfashioned Bingo! There will be prizes, refreshments and yummy holiday treats for all.

Tuesdays: January 9—30 (skip 1/2) Thursdays: January 4—25 1:00-2:00pm Register By: 1 WEEK Prior to Session Cost: $30/session (4 classes) Steeple Center, Room 200 Join instructors Stacey Popp (Tuesdays) and Lori Kearney (Thursdays) for this 50+ yoga class. Proper breathing and gentle postures will be taught to enhance strength and mobility. Chairs are available and can be used to adapt poses for your comfort. The class environment will help promote peaceful, joyful and healthy individuals. Participants are encouraged to bring their own mats.

Craft Club* Tuesday, January 16, 1:00pm Steeple Center, Room 202 Register By: January 9 Cost: $6/person Project: Melting Snowman Join us for a fun afternoon of crafting! Supplies and tools will be provided, and a facilitator will be present to lead the project. Please note that pictures are examples only; actual projects will vary. DrumFIT Cardio Drumming* Tuesdays, 10:00am, $10/month Room 200 Register By: December 29 We have partnered with DrumFIT, the world’s leading cardio drumming program, to have access to their extensive on-demand class content and video library. DrumFIT is a unique cardio drumming program, designed for older adults, that uses movement and rhythm to benefit both the mind and body.

Free Movie Monday “The Fabelmans” Monday, January 22, 1:00pm Assembly Hall Skip the theater prices and come enjoy a free movie presentation with your friends at the Steeple Center! Closed captioning will be turned on.

Blood Pressure Checks Tuesday, January 2 10:45—11:15am Steeple Center, Conference Room A nurse from The Rosemount Senior Living will be at the Steeple Center the first Tuesday of each month to do FREE blood pressure checks!

Just think we now can welcome in 2024. IT’S JANUARY!

The Rosemount Area Arts Council (RAAC) hosts many exciting events at the Steeple Center that you can take advantage of. Tickets can be purchased online at RAAC’s website www.rosemountarts.com, at the Steeple Center during their Box Office Hours (Mondays 10am-12pm, Tuesdays 9-11am and Thursdays 13pm), or at the door.

There was so much to be thankful for in 2023. Recapping our Advisory Committee, I believe several actions were started and resolved that will help ensure the sustainability of our wonderful organization into the future. Last year we grew our membership to over 307 members. Our luncheon numbers were over 100 on several occasions as well. These numbers are something to be proud of and a goal to exceed in 2024. Now, all we need are volunteers to help make it happen. Why don’t you try being a volunteer and sign up for some activity? Ask anyone who served on the Advisory Committee, Kitchen Committee, Mystery Trip Committee, Leprechaun Committee or the Halloween Trail Committee. I’m sure they’ll tell you that it was fun doing something for a great group of members. You have everything to gain by being active and enjoying being with your friends and neighbors.

Internationally acclaimed pianist and vocalist Phil Thompson performs a night of Billy Joel and Elton John’s biggest hits including “Bennie & The Jets”, “Your Song”, “My Life”, “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant”, “Rocket Man”, “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me”, “Crocodile Rock”, “Movin’ Out”, “Daniel”, “New York State of Mind” and of course no tribute to these legends would be complete without “Piano Man”! •

Second Act Players The Second Act Players of Rosemount is a membership organization for seniors age 50 and over, interested in the theater. There are many opportunities for becoming involved, including: acting in plays and skits, set construction, stage management, directing, lighting and sound operation, script writing, costume design, classes, field trips, improvisational workshops, community outreach, and more. RAAC’s UFO and PHD Group: Do you have any projects half done (PHDs) or unfinished objects (UFOs) hanging around your house? Be it knitting, crocheting, beadwork, embroidery, wool work or any other type of hand work, we would love to have you join our group. This is a social group hoping to finish projects while enjoying the camaraderie found with like artists. There is no fee associated with joining this group.
