MARCH 8TH, 1977. General meeting. It has now been decided that the next three General Meetings will be held at the Greyhound Hotel, No. 1 Brighton Road, St. Kilda.
MARCH 27TH 1977. Motorkana to be held at Broadford, Porsche Club to attend by invitation from Triumph Sports Owners Association.
APRIL 19TH, 1977. Annual General Meeting to elect Office Bearers for the forth coming year.
APRIL 23/24/25, 1977. A motoring weekend to Mount Gambia. This event has been organized in conjunction with the South Australian Porsche Club. A booking fee of $20-00 per family will'enable the Club to arrange accomodation in the same Motel for all members participating. The following activities are to be organized for the weekend:-

DRIVERS CHAMPIONSHIP 1976. Congratulations must be extended to Bruce Harris for winning the 1976 Driver's Championship with a total of 23 points. Following are the final ten placings:-
PORSCHE IN MOTOR SPORT: On the Local Scene: The twilight meeting held on January 16th saw the commencement of the Production Sports Car Championship.
Due to the consistent driving of John Latham, Bruce Spicer's Kodak Porsche Carrera is running second in the Championship. Alan Hamilton's Turbo Porsche, (which is no longer sponsered by JAG) is running 4th due to a wheel problem in the 1st heat. With the problem sorted out Alan then went on to a convincing win in the 2nd heat.

PAST EVENTS: B. B. Q. Pool Party. This being the first social function for 1977 proved to be a huge success with approximately 50 members and frieds attending. Fortunately the weather stayed fine enabling the brave to take full advantage of the heated pool.

Since I bought my Porsche 911 in July 1974 there has occurred two explosions on the inlet side and this has resulted in the "box" being shattered. The second one cost me $190. Many other owners have had a similar experience. Since that time I have occasionally thought about the problem and discussed it with a number of my University colleagues. As a result I have done some simple experiments and believe that there is a remarkably simple solution to the problem. I submit the following considerations.
1. It is quite clear that the factory modification which involved shielding the leads is wrong in theory and useless in practice. It is well known that shielding is ineffective against induction due to electromagnetic fields.
By taping an unshielded lead (Porsche) to a shielded spark plug lead over a distance of 40 cm it has been found that at least 800 volts is induced in the secondary lead. With a shielded lead (Porsche) the induced voltage was at least 1000 volts, i. e an increase. The second blow-up in my 911 was after the shielded leads were installed. Unfortunately, a storage CR0 was not available and the voltages could not be determined accurately. Those given above are minimal ones.
2. A recent article in Electronics Today (Vol.6, No.10, p.14, 1976) states that a rich mixture (12:1) under compression may be ignited at 3, 00-4, 000 volts whereas a lean mixture (15:1) requires 7, 000-9, 000 volts for ignition. Assuming that the problem is related to ignition with an inlet valve open (i.e. without compression) the voltage required to ignite a rich mixture not under compression would be even less. Another factor to be considered is the spark plug gap. In addition, on starting with a cut out open there is usually an extra voltage fed into the system and this may be significant in inducing a higher 30-40 1/o voltage in a neighbouring lead supplying a cylinder with the inlet valve open, and containing a combustible mixture.
A general summary of the factors involved suggests that there sometimes occurs a favourable set of circumstances for ignition to occur at the wrong time - cut out open, mixture rich, fuel being pumped in before the motor is actuated, a favourable spark plug gap. If this is accompanied by an unusually high induced EMF in a lead supplying a cylinder with the inlet valve open an explosion will occur. The chances are that some part of the inlet system which is made of plastic will be shattered.
REMEDY: The remedy is remarkably simple. The EMF induced in a wire is inversely proportional to the distance (perhaps to the square of the distance) between the two wires as well as well as the distance they are together. Separating the leads over the entire distance by 2 cm substantially lowers the voltage induced. It is interesting that somebody's desire for neatness led him to bind the leads closely together.
Several heat resisting strips of plastic with holes drilled in to take the leads will be quite satisfactory as a means of separating the leads. The suggestion as to the cause of the problem is no more than plausible and naturally is not easy to test experimentally in the backyard. A statistically significant drop in explosions and shattered boxes would be proof enough. I have already separated the leads on my car and will now feel safe outside a 10 km radius from Hamiltons.

PORSCHE 924 TO HAVE THAT WORLD CHANPION LOOK.
Porsche is doing it the special way: Commemorating the victory of two motor sports world championships the Company is building a limited number of special versions of the Porsche 924 for motor sports enthusiasts. While the base finish of these models will be all white, they will also carry the bright colours of the Porsche-Martini works team: blue and red stripes on each side. The trim of the seats will feature a red cloth center lane with blue seams while the floor and luggage compartment carpeting will also be in red.
Additional equipment of this special series includes stablilizer bars front and rear, light metal rims painted white, radial ply tires of the size 185/70 HR 14, and a leather covered steering wheel. A special plaque mounted to the gear box housing reminds of Porsche's world Thmpionship titles.
