TOM MASSELINK
Director
My name is Tom Masselink. As a young boy, my father— who worked for Thomassen & Drijver—would take me along when visiting factories. While he handled business, I got tours of the facilities. I loved observing production processes and absorbing the smells and sounds of the factories. That early exposure probably sparked my passion for the manufacturing industry. VMO stands for connecting entrepreneurs with each other, with education, and with government. Connection is the magic word that brings value. Bringing businesspeople together and helping them strengthen each other is a meaningful and rewarding endeavor for Eastern Netherlands.
ROB VAN DEN NIEUWBOER
Chairman
My name is Rob van den Nieuwboer, born in Delden and a true “Tukker.” After completing technical college, I entered the field of hydraulic drive technology. The vast range of applications across nearly every sector worldwide made it particularly fascinating for me. My career began at Hydrospex, which was a one-man business at the time, and in 1994 I founded my own company, Holland Hydraulics B.V., specializing in hydraulics. I joined VMO in the early 1980s because the association’s extensive knowledge and experience offered exactly what I needed. For me—and for every company in this sector—VMO is a valuable source of expertise with a wide-reaching
network. Moreover, the members are not only technically skilled but also great people to work with. I immediately felt at home in the VMO, and the many business contacts I made there helped me grow my company.
ANDRÉ
JANSEN
Board Member
My name is André Jansen, owner of High Tech Maintenance Nederland in Hengelo. We maintain and repair CNC-controlled machines for the metalworking industry. We’ve become a nationally known name in our field, though we remain an SME in size. One hallmark of an
SME is that its management knows a lot about running the business, but may not master every detail. What’s great about VMO and the collaborations it facilitates is that you learn to acquire and share knowledge. That’s why I joined years ago. As a board member, I’m responsible for the education portfolio. This appeals to me because it’s obvious that youth are the future of our industry. I represent VMO on the board of Techwise Twente and in the steering group for Strong Technical Education. In this way, I hope to contribute to bringing new people into this industry, which is so crucial for Eastern Netherlands.
HENK DE VOS
Board Member
My name is Henk de Vos, and since 2024 I’ve been on the VMO board with the goal of strengthening collaboration between our members and the manufacturing industry. I’m committed to uniting forces within the sector because I believe we can achieve more together. My focus is on jointly addressing challenges related to personnel and defense, topics that are becoming increasingly urgent. Through knowledge sharing and promoting innovative solutions, we aim to build a robust and future-proof sector. Additionally, I work on improving efficiency within companies, so processes become smarter, more sustainable, and more effective. In a rapidly changing market, it’s essential to adapt and strengthen our sector’s position. Through collaboration and innovation, we can not only grow but also face future challenges with confidence.
MARK TUINTE
Board Member
My name is Mark Tuinte, and I live in Hengevelde. As managing director and co-owner of TCPM Engineers & Consultants—a forward-thinking engineering and consultancy firm with five offices and 200 employees—I work daily to support industrial companies with complex technical challenges in engineering, project management, and industrial safety. Besides my work, I’m also active in governance within both the business world and social initiatives. In my village, I contribute as chairman of the sports foundation to the development of a new multifunctional facility (MFA), a project that connects and supports the community. I see the same spirit of involvement and connection in VMO. Together, we can achieve more—but that doesn’t happen automatically. People need to be brought together. My focus on the board is on VMO’s positioning and external visibility, such as the new website and this member magazine, which help us strengthen the VMO’s presence. Together, we’re building a strong and connected business community!
TOM VAN DEN NIEUWBOER Board Member
I am Tom van den Nieuwboer, the newest and youngest member of the VMO board. As the son of Rob, a technical entrepreneur, I grew up understanding the importance of technology and local entrepreneurship. My career has always centered on international sales and marketing, which led to my current position as commercial director at our family business, Holland Hydraulics. VMO appeals to me because, as a true Tukker, I believe in the power of collaboration. In Eastern Netherlands, we create amazing products— something we should be proud of and promote more actively, both nationally and internationally. By working together in innovation and market development, we can strengthen our position and better withstand external geopolitical pressures.
ESTHER VELTHUIS
Secretariat
My name is Esther Velthuis, and I own S-ter Support. As a freelance office manager, I support several companies, including VMO. In my role, I manage the back office and help organize various meetings and events. Initially, the manufacturing industry was unfamiliar to me, but I quickly discovered how dynamic and innovative this sector is. SMART SOLUTION LABS
INNOVATION THROUGH COLLABORATION
1The Interreg VI project Smart Solution Labs connects German and Dutch student teams with companies. VMO partners in this initiative with the Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft für den Kreis Borke n (WFG), Saxion University of Applied Sciences , Westfälische Hochschule Bocholt , and FH Münster. Over a period of eight weeks, eight students from different disciplines work together to solve a real business challenge. So far, fourteen companies on both sides of the border have successfully participated.
One example is Zeton , a lab system manufacturer based in Enschede . Students optimized fluid cooling processes in pilot installations. “They combined knowledge from mechanical engineering, bionics, and business administration. The solutions had to be both innovative and economically viable,” explains WFG project
coordinator Renate Warmers. Bo Soolsma, project engineer at Zeton, is also enthusiastic: “It was great to see how the students applied their diverse academic backgrounds to their solutions.” At the end of the project, the students presented several solution directions, which Zeton is now further developing. One of the students is even currently doing an internship at the company. “These kinds of collaborations lead to valuable connections and can result in internships or even permanent jobs,” Warmers adds.
At Lücke , a film specialist in Stadtlohn , students conducted market research for a new product. They identified potential customers and compiled a list of promising contacts. “Participating in Smart Solution Labs was a rewarding experience. The creative and practical approach provided us with useful and interesting new perspectives,” says director Hendrik Lücke.
The Smart Solution Labs will continue for another year in the border region. A new round began in March 2025, involving eight student teams and sixteen companies. “Companies can continuously apply,” notes Warmers.
OVER A PERIOD OF EIGHT WEEKS, EIGHT STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES WORK TOGETHER TO SOLVE A BUSINESS CHALLENGE.
The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and supported by three Interreg partners: the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs , the Province of Overijssel , and the German Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).

TECHNET
VMO COMPANIES FORM A CLUSTER FOR OEMS
3TechNet aims to pool the knowledge, expertise, and capacity of manufacturing companies, enabling them to offer more to the market through collaboration. By working together in a company cluster, TechNet can provide the full trajectory—from development to delivery—of a product, machine, or device. Each area is covered by specialists, complemented as needed by other VMO manufacturing members.
A cluster is composed of core partners and service providers. Core partners develop machines, devices, products, modules, and components,
while service providers contribute niche knowledge such as project management, CE certification, or specialized expertise. TechNet also facilitates project coordination and the successful implementation of innovations.
A notable example is the cluster that co-developed the MedEasy, a medication dispensing machine for pre-packaged prescriptions. The system features a dual-level carousel that organizes medication per patient. A robotic arm in the center handles dispensing. Pharmacy staff load the machine via two large access doors. The robot scans barcodes and sends an SMS with a unique access
code to the patient. Using a large touchscreen, the patient retrieves their medication.
Z-Tech , based in Oldenzaal and specialized in robotics, servo technology, and precision mechanics, developed the MedEasy concept together with IDpartners and several other companies from Eastern Netherlands, including Menla Kunststoffen and Descotech. Z-Tech solves complex production and assembly challenges, with robotics integrated as a core component of their solutions. MedEasy: A Collaborative Innovation

To reduce dependence on gas and oil from countries like Russia, the EU is investing heavily in green hydrogen. By 2030, the EU aims to produce 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen and import another 10 million tons. Production is the biggest challenge—this is why Hydrogen Valleys are being developed across Europe. These are regional ecosystems that represent the entire hydrogen value chain: production, storage, transport, and distribution of hydrogen.
WHY A HYDROGEN VALLEY IN EAST NETHERLANDS?
East Netherlands plays a key role in the energy transition through the development of a Hydrogen Valley—an innovative, integrated ecosystem in which hydrogen plays a central role. The region has strong sectors in technology, logistics, and manufacturing, making it an ideal location for building a hydrogen economy. Moreover, East Netherlands is strategically positioned close to Germany, where large-scale hydrogen investments are being made.
This offers great opportunities for cross-border collaboration and the development of a more efficient infrastructure.
In April 2024, a Hy East NL meeting was held at Oost NL in Apeldoorn. Hy East NL aims to connect the hydrogen ecosystem in East Netherlands on both policy and operational levels and stimulate further hydrogen development in the region. Participants were enthusiastic about the potential of a future Hydrogen Valley application. A Hydrogen Valley is a European program that allows regions to apply for funding to develop a local hydrogen ecosystem.
For East Netherlands, this means not only financial support, but also the opportunity to jointly create a strong and coherent narrative about hydrogen development in the region. In the coming period, Hy East NL will focus on developing a regional vision, by drafting a position paper on hydrogen development in East Netherlands. «

From Metal Teacher to Knight: A
LIFELONG PASSION FOR TECHNOLOGY AND EDUCATION
My passion for technology and education began when I started as a metal teacher at the LTS in Rijssen (now Reggesteyn), helping my students find the right internships in the region. Back then, I visited many metal companies to arrange placements that truly matched my students. That’s how I met Gert Jan Keupers, then director of Kemetech Machinefabriek in Nijverdal. He saw we could learn a lot from each other and invited me to a meeting of the VMT, the predecessor of VMO.
FROM TEACHER TO NETWORKER
There, I explained how pre-vocational education (VMBO) works, while learning a great deal myself about the regional industry. I also met the chairs of FME and Metaalunie. That’s when I truly realized how important networking is!
RECOGNITION FOR MY EFFORTS
Thanks to my enthusiasm and dedication to technical education in Twente, I received the VMT Award during a New Year’s event—a great honor! This also made me a lifelong honorary member, giving me even more opportunities to support and promote technical education. Over the years, I’ve welcomed numerous ministers, chairs of FME and VNO-NCW, and Members of Parliament to our school— all to show them how crucial good technical education is, especially at the VMBO level. Because without strong skilled professionals, the manufacturing industry comes to a halt.
INSPIRING AND TRAINING YOUNG PEOPLE
But I’m far from done. At Brink Staalbouw, I teach welding courses and help students— from primary school to higher education—discover how

But my motivation remains the same: showing young people how amazing technology is, and how many opportunities the Dutch manufacturing industry holds. In short: I have a DREAM job! «

Tercoo®
Tercoo® Dust Cover
This dust extractor has a connection for an (industrial) hoover, which extracts contaminants such as dust preventing them ending up in the environment. This is especially important when removing gelcoat, as it releases a lot of (toxic) dust. The extractor works perfectly both indoors and outdoors.
Tercoo® Adjustable Guide
Using the adjustable spacer, gelcoat can be removed from fiberglass very accurately. By adjusting the depht, you do not grind too deeply into the gelcoat. The guide is also ideal for steel or iron surfaces.
