DIRECTORS’ FOREWORD PRÓLOGO DE LOS DIRECTORES

Now in its third cycle, the Pathways partnership reflects a shared commitment to supporting emerging artists through meaningful exhibition opportunities, made possible by the generous funding of its sponsor, Carlos Malamud. The show’s curators—Dr. Gisela Carbonell of the Rollins Museum of Art and Shannon Lindsey of the UCF Art Gallery—have advanced this artist-centered mission through sustained collaboration, culminating in a curated exhibition of works by the competition’s finalists.

While we will celebrate the selected winner, the group exhibition format fosters rich and compelling dialogue among artists recognized by the jurors for the strength of their concepts and the sophistication of their practice. We extend our congratulations not only to the finalists, but to all who participated in the process—from submission through selection—each contributing to the vitality of this initiative.

For students and emerging practitioners, opportunities such as Pathways are vital spaces for experimentation, dialogue, and public visibility. They allow artists to situate their work within broader contemporary conversations while developing confidence in their creative and professional identities.

As construction begins on a new purpose-built facility for the Rollins Museum of Art, scheduled to open in 2028, this moment invites reflection on the role of our institutions in shaping the next generation of art professionals. Our programs provide rigorous and dynamic environments that encourage students to engage critically with both historical and contemporary perspectives. At Rollins, we look forward to the expanded possibilities this new space will offer for realizing the visions of artists on campus and beyond.

submissions with attention to artistic rigor, clarity of vision, and intentional risk-taking, and was especially drawn to work that lingered in uncertainty, resisted easy answers, and held both emotional gravity as well as conceptual depth - qualities exemplified in the practices of both Lucía Morales and Shayla Marshall.

Lucía Morales’s work carries the weight of migration through the language of the body and the intimacy of material. Using textiles, video, performance, installation, sculpture, and pigment, she weaves Andean traditions and histories of labor into acts of presence, resistance, and care. Her installations become sanctuaries - spaces where stories are safeguarded, identities are reclaimed, and community gathers in collective healing/shared remembrance. Lucía Morales’s works do not simply occupy space - they endure - resisting erasure, insisting on the visibility of migrant and diasporic identities while honoring ancestral knowledge through touch, movement, and ritual.

Moving into the Afro-futuristic worlds of Shayla Marshall, where the everyday is consumed by strands of identity - layered with material meaning and power.

Working across photography, sculpture, and installation, Marshall challenges overlooked narratives and representations, inviting viewers into futures where Black histories and ideas of ‘home’ are felt as much as they are seen. A corner store, a hair salon, a sitting room - these are not just spaces, but sites of care, memory, and quiet persistence. Her work moves between the spiritual and lived experience, reaching across diasporic histories and asking us to witness the beauty and weight carried in the ordinary. To experience Shayla Marshall’s work is to recognize that what is seen and what is carried are inseparable, fragile, and resilient all at once.

A significant contribution to Ghanaian Contemporary Art, Alex Awuku’s work blends traditional African art forms with modern artistic techniques to explore complex themes of identity, culture, and the human condition through storytelling. His pieces reflect a deep understanding of both the history and the evolving sociopolitical landscape and its changes in Ghana, while also contributing to broader global conversations and storytelling about the intersection of tradition and contemporary African

art heavily influenced by the shaping and interruption by technology. One of the central themes in Awuku’s work is the exploration of identity and alienation. In the context of Ghana, this theme takes on a particularly significant role, as the country has undergone profound political, social, and cultural changes over the past century. Awuku’s art interrogates how these transformations influence individual and collective identities, with particular attention to the impact of colonization and urbanization, as well as to how storytelling survives. In his sculptures, Awuku often uses metal, wood, and found objects, which not only evoke the industrial and urbanized world of modern Ghana but also reference the material culture of traditional African craftsmanship. These sculptures often take the form of distorted abstract human figures, symbolizing both individual and collective experiences.

By manipulating both organic and inorganic materials, Alex highlights the interplay between nature, human agency, and the effects of technology and other outside forces, a recurring motif throughout his body of work. In the context of contemporary Ghanaian art, the

artist occupies a critical position. He is part of a generation of artists who, while grounded in traditional Ghanaian cultural practices, have embraced new media and techniques in ways that speak to an international audience. His work both challenges and celebrates the complexities of post-colonial Ghana, blending the old with the new, the local with the global via storytelling that breaks old boundaries. In Awuku’s case, technology as an intruding force functions as both a tool of dissemination and a site of tension that risks aestheticizing and decontextualizing deeply rooted cultural practices, potentially severing them from their localized, communal roots. Here emerges a key dimension of alienation: cultural forms mediated through global digital infrastructures can both empower but also detach. Awuku’s work stands as a testament to the dynamic nature of contemporary African art.

Through his exploration of themes such as identity, spirituality, and the intersection of tradition and modernity, the artist contributes significantly to the broader discourse on African culture and contemporary art. His unique artistic vision blends

traditional symbols with modern materials and techniques, challenges and enriches the understanding of what it means to be both African and global in the 21st century and becomes an important contribution to contemporary art. As Ghana and the wider African continent continue to navigate the complexities of modernity, Awuku’s art will likely remain a critical part of this ongoing conversation, providing a powerful voice in the narrative of African contemporary art.

A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation and fresh look at ceramic sculptures, Michael Cannata is a contemporary ceramic artist whose work stands at the crossroads of tradition and innovation. Known for his distinctive approach to ceramic forms and surface treatments, Cannata’s art emphasizes a deep connection to materiality, craftsmanship, and the tactile experience of ceramics. Through his work, he engages deeply with historical ceramic traditions while exploring new techniques and concepts that challenge the boundaries of functional and sculptural pottery which is what immediately drew me in. al arte contemporáneo.

artistic development is rooted in a deep understanding of ceramic tradition. Raised in an environment where craft and art were celebrated, his early years may have been formative in shaping his aesthetic and technical sensibilities. One of the defining features of his work is his ability to merge traditional ceramic techniques with contemporary artistic concepts. While many modern ceramicists gravitate toward minimalist forms or conceptual art, Cannata has engaged with the idea of ceramics as both a functional and an aesthetic medium. His work is characterized by a careful balancing act: drawing upon the functional nature of pottery, yet never relinquishing its potential for creative expression and artistic commentary as well as breaking traditional boundaries even in scale.

The sculptor and painter pushes the boundaries of traditional mediums by experimenting with techniques, and surface treatment methods creating a sensory experience in both sculptures and his paintings. The resulting pieces often feature intricate textures, rich color palettes, and dynamic surfaces that invite viewers to engage with

the qualities of the ceramic form. In his hands, these traditional materials transcend their historical context and become a canvas for exploration and innovation that are kept ambiguous for the viewer to keep pondering. I would characterize Cannata’s work by a careful balancing act: drawing upon the functional nature of pottery, yet never relinquishing its potential for creative expression and artistic commentary or breaking traditional boundaries whether it is shape, form or scale. His sculptures for example can be admired at an unusually large scale of 4.5 feet. The artist represents an arresting fusion of tradition and innovation, where the tactile and expressive potential of clay is fully realized and explored. His mastery of surface treatment, form, scale and function, combined with a nuanced sense of narrative and symbolism, places him at the forefront of contemporary ceramic art. In summary, Cannata’s work challenges preconceived notions of ceramics as a solely stagnant functional medium, offering instead a dynamic investigation and exploration into possibilities expanding any viewers’ experience and taking us to new heights.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve as a Pathways: Carlos Malamud Prize juror. As an artist, the role of curator/juror in service of your contemporaries is one of the most important responsibilities you take on in your career. Particularly in this moment when the record we leave behind will tell the stories and seek to answer questions about humanity, challenged to act in the interest of a better world that will be built on the imagination of the artist.

Malamud.

to hear from. They offered us a window, door, or mirror into a world that brought hope, joy, or happiness to embrace, or a reality that we must confront, all to bring about the power needed to change. I am humbled to contribute to that process and thankful to every brave and talented artist who has demanded we hear them.

Ebenezer Nketsiah Mensah’s compelling work feels like new memories to me. Like new songs composed of past melodies. You recognize notes, but the composition is fresh. Ebenezer’s works, in his own words, explore themes of labor, memory, identity, and sustainability, and his POV is brilliantly clear and fresh.

Cruz Castillo’s exploration of labor and humanity through sculpture invites me to bear witness to the tensions between economics and empathy. The conflict of coexistence as experienced between the notions of public and private, and commerce and culture, brings about an internal conflict for the viewer in what it means to be a passive or active receiver of the significance of Castillo’s work.

Cruz Castillo (b. 1992, Detroit; lives and works in Winter Park, Florida) is a multidisciplinary artist that works in sculpture, performance, and video art. Castillo’s work reflects his interests in the labor process, the politics of production it brings, and his own relationship to the ritual of work that maintains the praxis of social being. familiarity of home exposed her to the broader complexities of being Black in environments not always safe or affirming. Now a full-time artist, Marshall holds her MA in Contemporary Art Practice from the Royal College of Art, the world’s leading university for art & design according to the latest rankings. Her practice pulls disparate moments in time into layered, immersive worlds where storytelling is the foundation, inviting viewers to dwell in the flamboyance and depth of narratives often overlooked. Her work has been shown in institutions such as the Saatchi Gallery (London) and Greenspace Miami (2025). She has completed multiple residencies, including at the Bakehouse Art Complex in Miami, and is a recipient of the Miami- Dade County Artist Grant.
