BE AN ART PROTECTOR
An Art Protector...
Looks, imagines, but never touches the art
Leaves food and drinks outside the museum
Uses only pencils to draw and take notes
Takes photos without the flash
Talks quietly and walks in the galleries
Why?
Fingerprints, food, liquids, markers, crayons, and bright light will damage artworks. Loud talking is disruptive and running in the galleries can be dangerous. Help us keep the museum safe and welcoming for all!
MY NOTES
As you explore the galleries, write or draw your ideas or feelings in the space below.
TWELVE ORIGINAL WOODCUTS
Roger Fry 1922

Above are two selections from a larger series of woodcuts by Roger Fry. The left print shows a self portrait of Fry and the right print is a still life featuring a teapot and a biscuit.
When an artist creates a series, they think very carefully about what images to include and what order the images should go.
Why do you think Roger Fry chose to put these prints together? How do the images connect?
MAKE A SERIES
Use the boxes below to create a series! Think about what images you want to include and what message you want to get across.
CONSTELLATIONS
Howardena Pindell
2014

Howardena Pindell’s father was a physicist. Inspired by his work, much of her art focuses on the stars. While there are no actual star shapes in this piece, the arrows, lines, and circles remind the viewer of the night sky.
A star chart is a map of the night sky that shows stars, constellations, and galaxies.
What emotion do you feel when you look at this artwork?
MAKE YOUR OWN STAR CHART
Using the stars provided, connect the dots to create your own constellation!
FIGHTING ROOSTERS
Francisco da Silva 2014

Indigenous Brazilian artist Francisco da Silva is self-taught. He learned by painting with natural pigments on walls and other non-traditional surfaces. He is known for depicting fantastical scenes with dramatic creatures, characterized by his vibrant choice of colors and patterns.
What emotions does this painting show? How does da Silva use color and pattern in this piece?
MYTHICAL CREATURES
In the space below describe a new mythical creature. Think about what it looks like, where it lives, and what it eats. Is it based on a real animal?
Now, draw your creature!
TWO WOMEN
Saul Steinberg 1993

Known for line work illustrations featured in The New Yorker magazine, Saul Steinberg approached his art making with a sense of humor.
How would you describe the figures in this piece? Are there any defining features you can see?
BLIND CONTOUR DRAWING

THE SWAN (AFTER NORMAN PARKINSON FOUNDATION)
Paulina Olowska
2017

The central figure of this painting is dressed in stylish futuristic clothing. Behind her, we can see the natural beauty of a swan swimming in a lake.
