Coming up this month is Neighbourhood Centres Week from the 11th -15th May, a national celebration of the places where community happens the places where people connect, get support, learn something new, and feel a sense of belonging. Neighbourhood Centres are built on the simple idea that strong communities start with strong local relationships, and we’re proud to be part of that story here in Rollingstone.
To mark the week, we’re hosting our Rollingstone Community Expo and Open Day on Friday 15th May, bringing together a fantastic mix of local Rollingstone and Townsville community groups, services and clubs. It’s a chance to explore what’s available in our region, meet the people behind the programs, and find out how to get involved whether you’re looking for support, volunteering opportunities, social groups, or activities for all ages.
We’ll also be showcasing the services offered by the Rollingstone Neighbourhood Centre, including our community programs, transport options, and support services. Our newly refreshed Op Shop will be holding a special sale of unique and high-quality items, with all proceeds supporting local initiatives.
And because no community event is complete without a treat, everyone who attends will receive their choice of a free coffee or slushie and a donut our way of saying thank you for being part of this community. If you haven’t visited the Centre in a while, or you’re new to the area, this is the perfect time to drop in, have a look around, and see what’s happening. We’d love to welcome you.
We also know many households are feeling the pinch right now. The Centre is here to help with practical support like our Food Relief programs, Community Cook-Up meals, and low cost local social activities that keep people connected without adding pressure to the budget.

Rollingstone Rag update
March was the final issue of The Rag delivered directly to your letterbox.
This decision follows extensive consultation and conversations with community members across various times and venues. Our questionnaire, published in the November and December 2025 editions, received 21 responses from 850 printed copies (2.47%).
Most respondents expressed a preference to keep The Rag in printed form. Some suggested ceasing publication altogether, others recommended moving fully online, and a few proposed combining with publications from Ingham.
After careful consideration, we have decided on the following:
1. Reduced Print Run
We will print half the usual number of copies. We will work with local businesses to make copies available for collection when you are visiting their premises.
2. Online Publication
Each monthly edition will be published on our website so it can be accessed at any time. A link will also be shared on our Facebook page.
3. Email Distribution
If you would like to receive a link by email each month, please send your email address to rollyrag@rollingstonenc.org.au requesting to be added to the mailing list.

This change has come about due to a shortage of volunteers available for deliveries and the rising costs of printing and consumables required to produce the magazine. We are very sad that the era of free home delivery is coming to an end. However, in 2026 we recognise that many people are comfortable accessing information online. We also acknowledge that some of us prefer a hard copy we can highlight, write on and refer back to if and when required.

Please remember that The Rag is produced entirely by volunteers, on behalf of the Committee of Management. It is totally separate from the Neighbourhood Centre’s activities and staff have no control over when the Rag is published. If you have been wondering why you have not seen a Rag for a while, that is because we always have a break for two months every year (January and February) to recharge our batteries and give our wonderful contributors a rest too!

The paper on which the Rollingstone Rag is printed, is generously provided by the Townsville City Council via their Community Grants process.
The Association’s Management Committee and Members graciously thank the Townsville Council for the opportunity to apply for the grant and its subsequent approval. This allows the Association to continue to provide ten editions of the Rollingstone Rag to our community each year.
Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club Inc.

Fishing Report
Sally and Glen ventured out to the Palms and had a great day with quite a few fish –various varieties.
One of our juniors Alex got his first legal length Barra, and a good Queenie.
Gary has been finding a few fish in the colder waters of NSW.

s Fishing Classic
This is now starting to get a little bit closer – to be held 4th July.
Sponsorship requests are under way, with a lot of positive responses from potential sponsors that we have spoken to.
Basically, all the sponsorship raised goes towards the kids in the form of prizes, sausage sizzle afterwards etc.
We are starting to get quite a bit of interest – looks like it could be quite a sizeable event.
Markets
The time is almost upon us – Saturday 2nd May our first markets for the year will be on. There has been a fair break, so we’re all looking forward to this market.

Monthly BBQ
Last monthly BBQ was again held at the Lions Den on Sunday 29th March – we had thought about a BBQ but there was some chance of rain. Of course it didn’t rain cos we were inside!
Well attended by the members, and new President Andy was able to address the meeting for the first time.
As we haven’t had a meeting for a while, we were able to present some monthly prizes to members who’d weighed in fish over the past few months.
Given the length of time that it’s been since we’ve been able to present prizes, due to rain washing out play, and the number of categories, I wont list them here this month, but congratulations to all those that received prizes for that period.
BBQ was a beauty – lamb chops, lamb sausages, fish, various salads, lamingtons and other sweets brought by our members. A great night.
Next monthly BBQ is scheduled for Sunday 24th May –this will also be at the Lions Den.
Raffles
The Fishing club holds a Seafood Tray Raffle the 4th Friday of every month – this month it will be 22nd May. Come on down for a great night at Mystic Sands Sports and Wellness, and win a lovely seafood tray.
They are well worth the win!

Rollingstone & District Lions Club Inc.
Rollingstone at this time of year is just fantastic, and great to see our locals and visitors enjoying all that our community has to offer. And our Lions Club Members have been out and about too enjoying themselves as they continue supporting local activities, including:
• Held our regular Monthly Members Coffee Catchup as part of our ongoing Lions Wellbeing commitment to our members
• Conducted another successful Bunnings BBQ
• Continued our Used Postage Stamps collection, with a large Bag of Stamps to be passed to our Australian Lions Childrens Mobility Foundation. Last year the Stamps collected by Lions Clubs right around Australia raised $60,000 to help fund Mobility Devices for Children & Youth who were born with Spina Bifida or Cerabal Palsy, with walking frames to assist them walk for the first time or specially built bikes and trikes that enable youngsters to go for a ride with their mates.
• Conducted our monthly Meat Tray Raffles at Mystic Sands Sports & Wellness, and as a result we were able to donate $250 to assist former Leo Club Member Khloe Bates attend representative Netball Carnivals, and also $250 to assist the Fishing Club with their upcoming Junior Fishing Classic which last year attracted 150 young Anglers.
• Welcomed new members as well as Zone Chairperson Warren Payne and members from the Townsville Castle Hill Lions Club at our April Dinner Meeting

• Four of our members supported the recent District Leo Camp at Bluewater, where 7 local Leos had a great time with other Leos from across NQ
• Supported the Rollingstone Leos Club 15th Birthday Celebrations
• Conducted a Co-ordinating Meeting for all local Community Groups to re-establish a regular Quarterly Community review of upcoming major events to ensure there are no clashes or conflicts of interest, and to Advocate with local & State Government on matters and issues that affect us all.
• Supported and Participated in local RSL ANZAC Day Commemorations.
Many times we are asked “What do Lions do?” Very simply, we serve our local community and residents through conducting projects and activities that make our community a better place in which to live.
While we are part of the world’s largest Service Club with 1.4M members worldwide, it all starts with people like us in our own small clubs volunteering our time, labour and means supporting local causes.
That includes fundraising e.g. raffles, Bunnings BBQs, catering for local events etc – all helping us to complete our projects some of which are listed above.
If you would like a wonderful and rewarding fun-filled time with like minded people making a “Real Difference” in your community, we would love to have you join us. Rollingstone and District Men’s Shed Inc.
Welcome to this month’s edition of the Rolly Rag. Its been a bit of a quieter month for our members this month – suspect catching our breath after doing up all the tables and chairs for Mystic Sands Sports and Wellness.
Community Activity
The only event undertaken this month was Bunnings sausage sizzle – we were well represented by our members, had members queuing up to cook snags! Thanks to the members that gave their time.
Had a very busy day – one of our busiest Bunnings yet – all contributes towards the work and funding we require to build a shed.
Raffles
Raffle held last Friday Night at the Golf Club, 17th April. Was a bit quieter than previous raffles, but every little bit helps.
We raffled two meat trays and $75 worth of diesel. Meat tray winners were our Vice President Macka, Therese, and Cheryl Hudsdon. Congratulations. Thanks everyone for your support.
And thanks to Steve at Mystic Sands Sports and Wellness, who has arranged a different community group to do the raffles each week.
Shed Construction:
Nothing further to add here – at this stage we are
seeking funding via grants to build the shed, but no major grants are on offer currently.
Membership
We welcome a new member, Dan, who has just moved with his wife from Canberra.
Dan is as keen as mustard, and has already been involved with activities for the Men’s Shed. Going to be a great member.
We also had Dave Pearson and Bob Jewell recently join the shed, and they have been up to their armpits in the shed’s activities as well.

Rollingstone and District Leo Club
It’s great to be a member of our local Leo club, and here is why! This month our members have had fun participating in the following:-
Members attended the District Leo Camp 7 – 9 Apr at the Bluewater Scout Complex, joining other Leos from North Qld for three days of laughter, learning and a shared love for making a positive impact. From water balloon battles and campfires, to scavenger hunts, games, arts and crafts, the Leos were able to push themselves out of their comfort zones, form new friendships and further develop teamwork skills that they will undoubtedly take with them moving forward. They learnt from each other, but not only that, Leos engaged in a variety of presentations exploring some of the key pillars Lions aim to assist. These included wildlife care, where they got to see baby wallabies, environmental initiatives where they collected rubbish at a beach, hunger where they learnt about the community services that Lions clubs run to help the less fortunate, vision and eye health, disaster relief and so on. Through the course of these three days, Leos have gained a further understanding on the massive
organisation that they are lucky enough to be a part of as well as eye-opening insights into how they can continue to help make our world a better place.
On the return from the camp, they celebrated the club’s 15th birthday, which included replanting of the Leo Garden first started 15 years ago, putting down a Time Capsule, and of course a yummy birthday cake and other goodies provided by the Lions club. All Leos, parents and families as well as Lions enjoyed the occasion.
On ANZAC Day Leos also participated in the community commemoration, joining the parade to the Cenotaph as well as laying a wreath. Well done Leos. Want to be part of our bright and vibrant Leo club and enjoy fun activities here in Rollingstone?

ANZAC Day is Australia and New Zealand’s national day of Remembrance, honouring the men and women who served, suffered, and sacrificed in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. It marks the anniversary of the 1915 Gallipoli landings, but its meaning has grown far beyond that campaign. ANZAC Day reflects the values our communities continue to uphold courage, mateship, endurance, and service. It is a time to gather, remember those who never came home, support those who did, and reaffirm our commitment to caring for veterans and their families.
In the lead up to Anzac Day
In the lead up to ANZAC Day, our sub-branch had the privilege of spending time with two groups of young people who represent the future of our community the Leo’s Scout Camp and the students of Rollingstone State School.
At the Leo’s Scout Camp, we spoke with the children about the meaning of ANZAC Day: why we gather, why we remember, and how the values of courage, mateship, and service continue to shape our communities today. Their curiosity, respect, and thoughtful questions were a reminder that the ANZAC legacy is in good hands.
For the first time in many years, we also returned to Rollingstone State School. There, we again shared the story and significance of ANZAC Day, joined by visiting soldiers who helped bring history to life for the students. Together, they assisted the children in writing their Postcards of Honour, a simple but powerful act of remembrance. The morning finished with a sausage sizzle a chance for everyone to come together, talk, and reflect in a relaxed and friendly setting. These visits are more than outreach; they are an investment in remembrance. By helping our young people understand the meaning behind ANZAC Day, we ensure that the stories, sacrifices, and values we honour continue to be carried forward with respect and pride.

As we reflect on another meaningful ANZAC Day here in Rollingstone and Balgal Beach, our sub-branch extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s commemoration such a success.
To the SES, thank you for your steady, reliable traffic management your presence ensures our community can gather safely and with confidence.
To the Lions club, we are grateful for taking on the role of MC and for providing the tea and coffee that helped bring people together before and after the service. Our thanks also go to all who donated towards the Gunfire Breakfast. Your generosity directly supports this important tradition and helps us continue delivering a respectful and welcoming morning for our veterans and community.
A special acknowledgement to Laura and her hardworking crew, whose huge effort delivered a hearty, well loved breakfast. Your commitment and care were evident in every plate served.
We also recognise the small but dedicated community of Crystal Creek, who came together to provide a warm and generous roast lunch. Your hospitality strengthens the bonds between our communities and is deeply appreciated.
To Padre Mike Smith, thank you for your thoughtful words of remembrance on your first ANZAC Day with us. Your contribution added meaning and reflection to the service.

Toomulla Beach News
After a very long, hot, humid and wet summer, it seems that the comfortable weather has returned. The surrounding countryside has certainly benefitted from all the rain and is still a lush shade of green. Our local Coast Carers have been busy clearing weeds from the four beach access tracks along the Esplanade so these are now safer and more visually appealing.
The extra vegetation has also caused a boom in local wildlife and with lots of long grass by the sides of the road, please be vigilant for wallabies and other animals crossing the road, especially at dawn and dusk.
The council would like to collect data on roadkill along the Toomulla Beach road and in our village, so if you do hit or see a fresh roadkill, please report it to council by email: paul.jacob@townsville.gov.au
Erosion is a natural but humbling process and Mother Nature can be a formidable force. Two places where this can be witnessed are along the Paluma Road and our very own Toomulla Beach.
It is now possible to drive up to Paluma without a permit. Escort vehicles will guide you up the road leaving the bottom gate and Paluma village on the hour during daylight. The Crystal Creek bridge and picnic area are closed and stopping on the road is prohibited as it remains a work site. The level of damage to the road and the number of landslips above and below the road surface is really quite incredible and the works will continue for many months..
Residents of Toomulla who regularly walk the beach will have noticed the constantly changing foreshore. Sand seems to come and go, sometimes overnight! It has been somewhat reassuring to learn that our
council regularly monitors the movement of sandbars, creek openings and coastal erosion via aerial surveys.

Mutarnee’s SS Wild Last Week of Term!
What a way to wrap up the term!
Mutarnee SS students swapped pencils for adventure and headed off to the Billabong Sanctuary for a day full of wildlife, laughs, and just a little bit of “are we allowed to touch that?!”
From the moment we arrived, the excitement was as loud as the cockatoos. Students came face-to-face with some of Australia’s most iconic animals including crocodiles that definitely had their eyes on us (don’t worry… we stayed on the safe side of the fence!). There were kangaroos to feed, turtles to spot, and at least one emu who seemed very interested in joining our group.
Teachers were very brave, of course although there may have been a few nervous laughs when the crocodiles started moving!
To top off an already fantastic day, the Easter Bunny made a surprise visit (very impressive considering the heat and the hopping schedule this time of year).
Students took part in an Easter egg hunt, showing off some very competitive searching skills. Let’s just say no chocolate was left behind!

Wildlife Carers
Isn't it nice to feel the change in the weather, cooler nights and mornings and not that oppressive heat during the day.
Us carers have noticed a change in the animals coming in to care. There are more birds than ever and think that a great deal are young ones that are kidnapped while trying out their wings, few can fly well immediately so need a few training seasons first and this is where kind people pick them up and take them to a vet.
We have also seen a number of parrots come into care very unwell and most do not survive the disease they appear to have. It takes time to diagnose and find a treatment for bird diseases. It could be as simple as the wet weather we have had and the flowering trees and plants not producing enough to feed the birds and they are just starving. Carers have had to delay the release of some of their birds due to lack of food out there. I released lorikeets' who promptly returned over two days wanting to get back into the aviary and were starving.
The snakes are also having a hard time as there is not the volume of birds around for them and I don't think they like the wet either.
Possums have been found in dry spots around the home as they also needed to get out of the wet, it just went on for too long for most of us.

The kangaroos are the fortunate ones as the rains have plenished the grass so they are having a good time. It appears to be keeping them away from the sides of the roads but as everything dries they will be looking for food again. This is when we need to keep our eyes open along the sides of roads for animals. There was a cassowary hit and killed last week up north. Now there should be no reason for that death as the areas are well signed and road speeds adjusted accordingly but anyone who drives on our roads, be it 40, 60, 80 or 100 km/hr know that the number of speedsters is on the rise.
Our 60 km zones here are a joke but I and many others have worked out that in the Balgal area, 60km means 80+, 80 km is over 100km so we all need to adhere to the new speed zones out here. All vehicles seem to be exempted to the road laws signage. What chance do our wildlife have and heaven help any children who would dare to use the roads around here thinking they are safe?
We all need to slow down and sniff the flowers, there is no where that we need to be in such a hurry. If you are late for work set the alarm 10 minutes earlier or ease off the accelerator and get there alive.
We really only have one life so make it a long one.

Just a report on the Rollingstone RSL relocation. I am informing Council that RSL Rollingstone group wishes to actively pursue a location to build a meeting venue. I have taken up the challenge to help the organisation in their pursuit. I will be liaising with Council staff to see if it is possible to utilise a portion of Bushy Park for a dwelling to be built on Council land on a Peppercorn lease arrangement.
Final approval has been given by Council for Telstra to construct their new mobile phone tower at the bottom of Pace Park.
Council is currently in budget discussions that will last into early May.

The current fuel crisis is hot on everyone’s hit list, and understandably so. It is impacting our community significantly. The biggest pressure points I’m hearing about are for farmers, tradies, freight operators and families who simply do not have other options. In a region like ours, when fuel goes up, everything goes up.
I have raised this issue in Parliament because people in our region are feeling the effects first and hardest. In a recent Parliamentary speech, I made the point that in places like Hinchinbrook, fuel powers our tractors, harvesters, pumps, trucks, fishing boats, freight and family cars. When costs rise sharply or supply becomes uncertain, the impacts do not stay at the bowser. They flow through to agriculture, fishing, freight, food prices and household budgets.
There is no sugar-coating it people are doing it tough, and the uncertainty is weighing heavily on families, businesses and communities. Cost of living pressures are real, and in regional areas like ours they hit harder because of freight, distance and fewer alternatives. What I want people to know is this: our region is resilient. We have faced challenges before and we have always come through them by backing each other and supporting local. But, there are broader pressures at play global fuel prices, supply chain issues and economic uncertainty.
This however, does not mean regional communities should be left to carry the burden alone. I will keep advocating for policies and support that recognise the realities of living in the regions. I’m working closely with industry groups, local businesses, State colleagues and Federal counterparts to make sure local impacts are understood. I’m also pushing for practical measures like a national fuel dashboard, with real-time
supply information, and for stronger long-term fuel security for Australia.
In addition to cost of living pressures, the issues I hear about most are roads, youth crime, flood resilience and workforce shortages. These are not abstract concerns they affect how safe people feel, how easily they can move around the region, and whether local businesses can grow.
On youth crime, people want continued action and greater community safety. We have seen 391 new recruits for our region in 18 months and good results from Operation Forge in only one month of its’ inception. We know there is more to do and I will continue to fight for the tougher bail laws I spoke about during the by-election. Nearly 50% of youth crime is committed by those out on bail.
Flood resilience on our roads remains high on the list of priorities, with the community expecting practical upgrades and honest communication. I will keep working to ensure local feedback is taken directly to the Minister and Department.
On workforce shortages, the long-term answer is making our region an easier place to live and work with the right housing, services, training and support to not only attract but retain people.

Heart Health week is between the 4th 10th May 2026. Heart disease is classed as the silent killer. Many people may not know their risk of developing heart disease factors like high blood pressure and cholesterol as you can not feel these as symptoms.

• First Nations people aged over 30 should have a heart health check with their GP to help understand their chances of having a heart attack or a stroke in the next five years and what steps you can do to help prevent it.
So, what is a Heart Health Check?
A heart health check is around a 20-minute check up with your GP and practise nurse. The GP or nurse will go through factors that can increase your chances of either a heart attack or stroke. These can be:
• Whether you have diabetes
• Smoking status
• Certain medications
• Health conditions
• Family history
• Ethnicity
What you can do to reduce the risk of heart disease:
• Know your cholesterol level
• Manage your blood pressure
• Check your blood sugar
• Follow a heart – healthy eating pattern
• Move more
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Be smoke free
• Avoid or drink less alcohol
• Manage stress and mental well being How well do you know your blood pressure?
