We’ve been focusing on ways to make life easier for families at the Neighbourhood Centre. We know that the cost of living is rising, pressures on families are increasing and social connection is more important than ever.
Our July School Holiday Program is offering a great mix of hands-on activities, creativity and community connection. All activities are free and designed to be fun, safe, and welcoming for children and families.
Woodworking Workshop – children can learn practical skills and build their own LED light or moneybox to take home using real timber and tools under safe supervision.
Free Community BBQ – All community members are invited to join us for a free BBQ hosted by the Disaster Recovery Team. There’s a free BBQ lunch including special treats for the kids, meet-and-greet with the Disaster Recovery Team and fun activities for the kids.
The team provides free, confidential support to anyone affected by natural disasters. This is a relaxed
Strengthening Rollingstone’s Disaster Resilience – an update from the RNC.
Our community has faced its fair share of storms, outages, and challenges and each time, we’ve shown how strong we are when we work together. This year, two major projects are helping us take the next step in improving our local resilience. Both initiatives aim to ensure that our hall remains a safe, connected, and reliable hub for everyone, both during emergencies and in everyday life.
STAND Community WiFi – Powered by NBN Sky Muster
We’re excited to share that the STAND (Strengthening Telecommunications Against Natural Disasters) Community WiFi system will be installed at the hall on 23 July. This satellite broadband system operates independently of local networks and is not subject to network prioritisation during emergencies. That means community members can stay connected even when mobile towers or fixed-line services are down. Key features include:
• Free public WiFi all year round when you’re near the hall
• Capacity for up to 100 users in normal mode
• Automatic switch to ‘disaster mode’, supporting up to 500 users with high-speed connectivity
A built-in UPS, allowing the system to keep running even during power outages
From 23 July, you’ll see posters inside and outside the hall with simple instructions on how to connect. We extend our sincere thanks to the Townsville Local Disaster

Rollingstone Stop-Motion Studios + LEGO – back by popular demand, the LEGO tubs will be making a return.
We’re also excited to introduce Friday Night Family Nights – a new community-led, volunteer run activity designed to bring families together in a relaxed, lowkey, welcoming space.
Our first family night will be Friday 17th July, running from 5:30-8pm at the hall. Bring the family for a simple dinner and tire the kids out with some family-friendly activities before bedtime.
These evenings are designed to be simple, social and accessible – a place where families can unwind and connect. If you’d like to be involved, we welcome volunteers, activity ideas and suggestions for future Friday Night themes.

RACQ Resilient Energy Centre Project
A huge thank you to the Rollingstone community more than 100 residents took part in our consultation survey, showing overwhelming support for improving our energy resilience. The survey results are available at the Centre or on our website.
Upgrading our solar system and adding battery storage is the next logical step in strengthening the hall’s ability to operate during and after natural disasters. While we are fortunate to have a well‑maintained generator (with all staff trained in its use), the high cost of diesel and the reality of fuel shortages makes it unsuitable for extended or everyday use. Building a more sustainable, reliable energy system simply makes sense.
As a designated evacuation centre and recovery hub, the hall becomes a place for people to gather for shelter, information, support, and essential supplies after a disaster. (Please note: the hall is not a cyclone shelter or a place of refuge before or during a cyclone.) If our grant application is successful, we will be able to:
• Provide a safe, powered space for the community
• Store food and medication safely
• Offer reliable phone charging and telecommunications Reduce our day-to-uday power costs, allowing more funds to flow directly back into community programs
We expect to hear the outcome of our application in 3–4 months. Keep those fingers and toes crossed this project would be a game changer for Rollingstone.
Meet Moon
When we’re out and about doing Mobile and Home Service, we’re lucky enough to meet some truly adorable characters.
This time, it’s Moon. She is the sweetest little lamb from Rollingstone, named for the crescent shaped marking on her head.
Just three days old (at time of photo), Moon had a bit of a rough start when her mum wasn’t able to feed here, so she’s happily accepted help from a very kind human instead.
Tiny, curious and completely charming, Moon is gentle reminder that you never know who you’ll meet on the job, and sometimes it’s love at first bleat.

Community Activity
Bunnings Sausage Sizzle was held Saturday 13th June. This was one of our better ones, exceeding most takings from other months.
The period from about 11am to 1.30 pm our workers were absolutely hammered. Mr Bruce was on the tools, and flat out keeping up with demand.
There were a number of members unavailable for the day, but we managed to borrow the wife of one member, the grandson of another, and not sure what they did but seemed to attract business.
Thanks for the ring-ins, Caitlin and Mr Bruces Grandson. Also thanks to Macca, Dan, Mick, Graham, Mr Bruce, and Pierre who all worked hard.
Lastly, we’re not going to let Caitlin go – not only brilliant on her customer service, but showed some IT skills too in setting up Eftpos on the phones.
Sick Bay:
President John Gurd, chaperoned by Rhonda, has just returned from Sydney for an operation on his leg. All reports are that the surgery went well, John is in good spirits, not too mobile yet but improving. He must be pretty tough – he’s had no pain killers since the surgery, sooks like me would have had some! Good to see him back in town and look forward to him getting down for our weekly meetups of a Friday Morning.
Balgal Beach locals join major beach clean-up
Balgal Beach locals Moira and Milja recently travelled to Mapoon to take part in the Tangaroa Blue Annual Beach Clean-Up. Their journey involved four days of travel, followed by five days of camping and collecting marine debris. Every item of rubbish collected was sorted, counted and weighed, with the data recorded to help governments better understand and reduce marine pollution.
Although the official results are yet to be released, the photos show the enormous scale of the clean-up.
The event brought together 13 volunteers, including Moira and Milja, along with the local ranger and her team of eight, and students from Weipa, all working together to protect the local coastline.
Congratulations to everyone involved for their outstanding commitment to protecting our environment and keeping our beaches clean.
Raffles
Given the five Fridays in May, we haven’t had a raffle at Mystic Sands Sports and Wellness since the last report. It is our turn this coming Friday 19th June. There will be three separate raffles of meat trays.
Love to see as many people down at Mystic Sands Sports and Wellness as possible – always some pretty good trays raffled.
Proceeds all contribute towards the ultimate construction of a shed.

Grants are now just starting to become available, so we will be busy seeking grants and committing applications.
Some serious work on applications will soon be commencing.

Rollingstone & District Lions Club Inc.
Rollingstone Lions have been out and about again through June in what is a busy month for our club. In addition to our usual activities including a Bunnings BBQ, raffles, our members and friends monthly coffee catch-up, environmental recycling and supporting the School Junior Leos with a refresh of their garden, we have also had some of our key members supporting Lions Zone and District Cabinet activities.
The highlight though was our annual Rollingstone and District Lions Club Changeover Brunch at Mystic Sands Sports and Wellness where members and guests celebrated the achievements of the club throughout our Lions year (1 July 2025 - 30 June 2026) under the leadership of President Delwyn.
We were honoured to have special guests District Governor Elect Ed Morris and his wife Angie from Ingham, Zone Chairperson Warren Payne and Wendy from the Townsville Castle Hill Lions Club (our sponsor club), and wonderful to welcome Townsville Mayor and member of our Lions club, Mayor Lion Nick Dametto. Great too that our Rollingstone Leo Club President Saxon Crabb and his parents Greg and Simone could join us, with Saxon also reminding us of the great work Leos do for the youth of our local area in his annual Leo report.
Mayor Nick commended Rollingstone Lions for their support of our local community in his Toast to Lions
International, while Delwyn thanked all members for their dedication, enthusiasm and willingness to volunteer to support all of the club’s efforts to be of service to others.
District Governor Ed thanked Delwyn for her Leadership of our growing club, and assisted Delwyn with making some special awards to our members, including Michelle Ambia as our Lion of the Year and Shirley Muller who was presented with a Progressive Melvin Jones (the Founder of Lions Clubs International in 1917) Fellowship, the highest recognition our Lions Clubs International Foundation can bestow on a Lions Club Member.
Congratulations to all members who were recognised on the day, with thanks also to Mystic Sands Sports and Wellness who provided a wonderful brunch for all attendees.
DGE Ed then installed the incoming Board of Directors under President Delwyn’s Leadership, and looking forward to another great year of service to our Community.

Rollingstone and District Leo Club
Hard to believe that the first half of the year is already gone, as we look forward to the next six months of having fun in Rollingstone.
The club has a strong list of practical community activities planned for the rest of the year, including a winter afternoon activity with a campfire and lantern stalk, with the possibility also of a joint activity with Bluewater Scouts as well as a possible Blue Light Disco during the September school holidays.
The Leos are also preparing to support the following:-
• the Rollingstone School P & C Dry Boat Race at the landing on Sunday 26th July
• the Rollingstone Harvest Festival on Saturday 12 September with their hot dog stall plus water and soft drink sales.
• Sunday 8 November the club will hold the Lap the Map Colour Run and Obstacle Course as part of the Lions Diabetes Awareness Healthy Lifestyle Program.
To close the year, the Leos will support the Mutarnee School Colour Run and Obstacle Course on Friday 4 December and the Rollingstone School Colour Run and Obstacle Course on Tuesday 8 December.
Community Carols and packing of the Leo Christmas Hampers are planned for Wednesday 9 December, followed by the proposed Hospital Visit and Leo club breakup on Monday 14 December.
We are looking forward to an active and rewarding second half of the year, with a strong focus on service, participation and supporting the Rollingstone community.

• Ice cubes x3
• Ice cream scoop x1
• Any type of soft drink
• Straw
• Tablespoon
• Cup of your choice
Steps
1. Grab the cup and scoop 1 tablespoon of ice cream into the cup.
2. Pour your soft drink into the cup until it reaches a quarter of the way. Watch it froth up!
3. Break some ice into the cup.
4. Put your straw into the cup. There you have it, a delicious spider for you to drink at home! Enjoy!

Toomulla Beach News
Winter is here
Winter at Toomulla Beach has been a combination of golden sand, swaying palms, and endless sunshine. Balmy days where temperatures have hovered around the mid-twenties along with endless stretches of sand [thanks to some super low tides], have provided the perfect playground for many who love the beach. There were a few chilly nights, one dropping as low as 9 degrees, welcoming an opportunity to stoke up the firepit.
Christmas in July
Christmas in July is coming to Toomulla Beach on the 4th July 2026, bringing festive cheer and holiday magic to the community. Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto will dress up as Santa Claus, arriving with a sack full of exciting presents for the children. Raffle tickets are currently on sale and will also be available to purchase on the day, giving attendees the chance to win an array of fantastic prizes.
Crocodile Safety Alert for Toomulla Beach
There have been crocodile sightings again in both Saltwater and Camp Oven Creek. This reinforces that

residents and visitors must remain vigilant when near the water. These powerful predators can be present even in areas that seem calm and safe, so it’s important to keep a safe distance from the water’s edge, supervise pets and children closely, and avoid swimming in known crocodile habitats. Everyone is urged to take these sightings seriously and help keep the community safe by reporting any crocodile activity. Sightings can be reported online via the Queensland Government’s portal or by calling QWildlife on 1300 130 372. Your awareness and quick reporting can help protect both people, pets, and wildlife.
Coast Care
Toomulla Beach Coast Care volunteers met on June 13th at the Camping Grounds and on the Esplanade for another morning of clearing, weeding and pruning. Later that day volunteers traded their weeding gloves for bowling balls during a fantastic night out at Mystic Sands Sports and Wellness, enjoying a lively round of barefoot lawn bowls followed by a wonderful dinner together. Brett Pates took out the title amid some fierce competition. The evening offered the perfect opportunity for the dedicated team to unwind, share a laugh, and connect outside of their usual conservation work. A huge thank you goes out to Amanda Spears for organising this incredibly fun-filled night, which hopefully will be the first of many.
State of Origin
Locals at Toomulla Beach turned out to watch Game 2 of the 2026 State of Origin series, gathering along the Esplanade to cheer on the Maroons. Set up with camp chairs, eskies, and a massive screen, many celebrated Queensland claiming victory in an epic series-leveling clash. Supporters wearing maroon colours can be seen on the Esplanade again for the decider on the 8th of July - all welcome even if your jersey is blue. I hope all my community is having a good day. I would like to start my column by giving a brief analysis of the Townsville City Councils budget meeting that was held on the 17th of June. I was in a quandary about how I was going to analyse the increases that affect all of you. My comments within the Chamber were as follows;
“The rate increase is a financial impost to ratepayers who are struggling to survive with the cost of living and with owner occupiers paying high interest rates on mortgages. I believe the cost of rents will go up to accommodate our total 6.8% increases across the rates component in this budget.
The cost of fuel is high, but I believe the extra %, for council diesel, placed on the rates component of the budget, is unacceptable under the current circumstances. All budgets have assumptions built in, but I believe 1.3.1c, the fuel levy imposed by council for 26/27, is an assumption I cannot agree with, but I am not going to put my head in the sand and refuse
this resolution in this budget. I want my community to understand what I believe is council’s challenging financial position, but I still feel the increases are too high.”
As a responsible Councillor and Divisional representative, I was not going to vote against a budget, but I wanted the Council to know that I was disappointed with the effects it will have on the ratepayers of this city”.
Water also increased 8%, which I spoke against as well.
My capital works that were approved in the budget were the upgrading of Veales and Darling Road intersection in Jensen and a safety drainage upgrade for junior students at St Anthonys College, cross the road in front of their school.
Works will also take place this year on the culvert on Pace Road.
One of the issues I hear about most when I am out and about is the cost of living, and power bills are always part of that conversation.
That is why it is welcome news that electricity prices are set to come down from 1 July. Regional households will see reductions of up to 6.9 per cent, and small businesses up to 8.1 per cent. After years of rising costs, this is some relief for local families and businesses trying to stay on top of their bills.
This is recognition that the Crisafulli Government’s Energy Roadmap is heading in the right direction. The focus is on delivering affordable and reliable power, and that focus is starting to put downward pressure on electricity prices after a decade that saw costs increase significantly.
This month's State Budget also reinforced the importance of investing in regional Queensland. While structural cost-of-living relief is important, so too is investment in the infrastructure that keeps our communities connected and supports future growth. For communities like Rollingstone, the Bruce Highway is much more than a road. It is how people get to work, school, medical appointments and sporting events. It is also a vital freight route that supports businesses, tourism and agriculture across North Queensland.
For too long, many North Queenslanders have felt the Bruce Highway has not received the investment it deserves. That is why it is encouraging to see projects progressing through the Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program, including works between Townsville and Ingham. These projects are focused on improving safety, reliability and flood resilience for motorists who rely on this important corridor every day.
I am also focused on improvements to the Gairloch and Seymour crossings, which remain important priorities for our region. These sections play a critical role in keeping communities connected during severe weather events, and I will continue working with the Minister and department to ensure we achieve the right outcomes for these areas.
Finally, ahead of their anniversary celebrations, I would like to congratulate the Pace family on 90 years of farming in the district. It is a tremendous achievement and one of which the whole family should be extremely proud. Our region was built on agriculture, and their commitment to both the region and the industry is something we should all acknowledge and celebrate.
We have a strong and resilient community, and I remain optimistic about what lies ahead. Whether it is reducing cost-of-living pressures, improving road safety or investing in infrastructure, I will continue working to deliver practical outcomes for our region.

National Diabetes Week July 12th – 18th 2026: Understanding Diabetes and Supporting Our Community
From 12–18 July 2026, Australians will observe National Diabetes Week, an annual campaign dedicated to raising awareness about diabetes, promoting prevention, and supporting the millions of people affected by this chronic health condition. Diabetes is a condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly regulate blood glucose (blood sugar) levels. Glucose is the body's main source of energy, and the hormone insulin helps move glucose from the bloodstream into the body's cells. When insulin is not produced, or does not work effectively, blood glucose levels can become too high, leading to serious health problems over time.
There are several types of diabetes.
• Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks the cells that produce insulin.
• Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough of it.
• Gestational diabetes can occur during pregnancy and requires careful management to protect both mother and baby.
Common symptoms of diabetes include:
• increased thirst,
• frequent urination,
• fatigue,
• unexplained weight loss,
• blurred vision,
• and slow-healing wounds.
However, many people with Type 2 diabetes may have few or no symptoms, making regular health checks important, particularly for those with risk factors such as a
• family history of diabetes,
• being overweight,
• physical inactivity,
• or increasing age.
If left unmanaged, diabetes can lead to serious complications including
• heart disease,
• stroke,
• kidney disease,
• vision impairment,
• nerve damage,
• and circulation problems. The good news is that with early diagnosis, healthy lifestyle choices, regular monitoring, and appropriate medical care, many people can successfully manage their condition and reduce their risk of complications.
National Diabetes Week provides an opportunity for all of us to learn more about diabetes, support friends, family members, and neighbours living with the
condition, and encourage healthy habits within our community. Simple actions such as staying active, eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and attending regular health checks can make a significant difference.

Our community bus is one of the most important services we offer in Rollingstone. It keeps people connected, helps households manage the rising cost of living, and makes it easier for locals to get to appointments, shopping, and community events. It’s been fantastic to see the service so well used every full bus is a sign of a strong, connected community.
To keep the bus safe, comfortable, and accessible for everyone, we ask all passengers to follow a few simple guidelines:
• Keep aisles clear Bags, parcels, walkers and personal items must not block the walkway at any time.
• Limit groceries and parcels Space is shared, so please only bring what can fit safely under your seat or in the designated storage areas
• Secure your items Loose bags can shift during travel. Please make sure everything is tucked away before the bus departs.
• Be mindful of others Seats are for passengers first. Larger items may need to be left at home or transported another way.
• Let us know if you have a walker or mobility aid –we may need to adjust passenger numbers accordingly.
• Please be ready at the agreed pick up time – and let us know if you need to cancel.
• Follow the driver’s instructions Our drivers are there to keep everyone safe and ensure the trip runs smoothly.
