Maintaining safe, clean streets; parks; and neighborhoods also help maintain and strengthen local property values – a priority for all of us. That's why the City conducted a community survey in the Fall of 2025, to solicit input on the services important to you – the public we serve. In these challenging and dynamic times for many California cities, cost of living issues and federal budget cuts that reduce the money available for local city services, tops the list of issues identified as serious problems by Rohnert Park residents.

Retaining high quality Public Safety officers and improving 911 response times for both fire and police to keep our residents safer continues to be a top priority for the public. And our city’s 28 parks and recreation continue to be a source of community pride, and residents prioritized maintenance of our fields and play structures so that children have safe places to play. For those that took the time to provide your viewpoints, thank you! As we prepare for our 2026 budget planning, additional community surveys and outreach is planned to give residents a voice in the future of our City. CITY COUNCIL REORGANIZATION AND NEW LEADERSHIP FOR 2026 On November 18, 2025, the Rohnert Park City Council elected Councilmember Emily Sanborn as Mayor and Councilmember Jackie Elward as Vice Mayor for the 2026 calendar year. The Council officially reorganized at its December 9 meeting, where Mayor Sanborn and Vice Mayor Elward stepped into their new leadership roles. During the meeting, the Council also recognized outgoing Mayor Gerard Giudice and outgoing Vice Mayor Emily Sanborn for their dedication and service to the community throughout 2025. Following the reorganization, Mayor Sanborn shared her appreciation and vision for the year ahead. “I want to start by saying thank you to my fellow Councilmembers, to everyone who supports us, to my family and friends, to our staff, and to our amazing City Manager,” she said. Reflecting on the past year, Mayor Sanborn added, “It’s been a hard year, but at the same time it’s been my favorite year because I’ve learned so much and grown so much personally.” Mayor Sanborn also emphasized a focus on excellence and thoughtful stewardship in the coming year. “My vision is that we operate at the highest level possible, given the limited resources we have,” she said. She closed by sharing a quote that resonated with her leadership approach: “Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach,” a quote by poet Clarissa Pinkola Estés. A SEASON OF GENEROSITY IN ROHNERT PARK This holiday season, Rohnert Park once again reminded us what it means to care for one another. Our annual Holiday Toy Drive brought out the very best in our community, with residents showing up in a big way for local children and families. What started as a simple act of giving quickly became a citywide effort rooted in kindness, connection, and the shared goal of making the holidays brighter for our youngest neighbors. The success of this year’s Toy Drive was made possible by an incredible group of partners and volunteers who worked together with generosity and heart. Thank you to the Rohnert Park Public Safety Officers Association, the Rotary Clubs of Rohnert Park-Cotati, Rancho Cotati, and Sonoma Mountain Twilight, the Active 20-30 Club, the Education Foundation of Cotati and Rohnert Park, the Rohnert Park Chamber of Commerce, the City of Rohnert Park Foundation, the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District, and the many individuals who gave their time and energy. A special thank you also goes to Bay Area Digital Solutions for producing Toy Drive videos, graphics, and outreach materials that helped spread the word and reach more residents than ever before. Local businesses, organizations, and community groups further amplified the effort by hosting toy bins, matching donations, and supporting the City of Rohnert Park Foundation with financial gifts. Because of this collective generosity, 553 children in Rohnert Park woke up to a holiday morning filled with joy that may not have been possible otherwise. This Toy Drive reflects the compassion, collaboration, and community spirit that truly define Rohnert Park, and it is something we can all be proud of.
PREPARING ROHNERT PARK FOR WINTER STORMS As winter storms move through our region, the City of Rohnert Park continues year-round efforts to reduce flooding risk and keep residents safe. Public Works crews maintain storm drains, culverts, and waterways, monitor known trouble spots during heavy rain, and respond to service calls as conditions allow. Because Rohnert Park lies within the Laguna de Santa Rosa watershed, keeping water moving safely through our system is critical not only for our neighborhoods but for downstream communities as well. Residents are encouraged to take simple steps to prepare, including using sandbags when needed. Free sand and bags are available to Rohnert Park residents at the sandbag filling station located in the rear parking lot behind the Callinan Sports and Fitness Center, 5405 Snyder Lane. The station is open 24 hours a day throughout the rainy season, with a limit of 25 bags per household. For questions about sandbag distribution, residents may contact the Public Works Department at 707-588-3307. During storms, please use caution and avoid flooded roadways or barricaded areas. Even shallow water can be hazardous, hide debris, or pose electrical risks. Staying informed through City updates, preparing your home ahead of time, and checking in on neighbors all help strengthen our community’s ability to weather the season safely. ROOFTOP DECK LEAK REPAIRS COMPLETED AT PUBLIC SAFETY BUILDING Good news for the Public Safety Building at 500 City Center Drive: the long-standing rooftop deck leaks are officially fixed. For years, water from the two secondfloor decks leaked into the rooms below, causing ongoing damage and maintenance issues. In late December 2025, construction was completed to fully replace both decks with new waterproofing systems and finishes designed to permanently resolve the problem. As part of the project, a 24-hour “flood test” was conducted, allowing water to sit on the decks to confirm the new system was properly sealed. The decks passed the test, and the spaces below can now be used without concern for leaks. This work is part of the City’s Building Condition Assessment Project Implementation, which focuses on improving and maintaining City facilities.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FREE TAX FILING SEASON As tax season approaches, United Way of the Wine Country is calling on community members to help neighbors keep more of what they earn. Through the Earn It! Keep It! Save It! program, volunteers play a critical role in providing free, trusted tax assistance to local individuals and families. This service helps low-to-moderate income households maximize their state and federal refunds while building greater financial stability. Volunteers are needed in a variety of roles, including Tax Preparers, Intake Coordinators, and Spanish Interpreters. No prior tax experience is required, and all volunteers receive free training in January. Volunteer service runs from February through April, making this a meaningful way to give back during a defined and impactful window. By offering time and support, volunteers help ensure community members can access refunds and credits they may otherwise miss. This program is powered by United Way of the Wine Country in partnership with community organizations and supported by the IRS VITA program. Volunteers make a direct, tangible difference by helping families keep more of their hard-earned money and move toward financial security. KNOWING WHO TO CALL CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE In moments of crisis, knowing the right number to call matters. While 9-1-1 is essential for emergencies that require immediate response, many situations call for a different kind of support. That is where 2-1-1 comes in. Available 24 hours a day, 2-1-1 connects residents to trusted local information, services, and resources when help is needed but the situation is not an emergency. Calling 9-1-1 should always be reserved for urgent situations such as medical emergencies, fires, crimes in progress, or immediate threats to safety. For everything else, 2-1-1 serves as a direct line to community support. Residents can receive assistance with housing and shelter, food resources, disaster relief and preparedness, tax preparation help, immigration services, mental health support, services for seniors and veterans, and more. By making the right call, residents help ensure emergency lines remain available for those who need them most. United Way’s 2-1-1 service is free, confidential, and available by phone or text. Residents can dial 2-1-1 or text their ZIP code to 898-211 to connect with a trained community specialist who can help guide them to the right resources. Knowing when to call 2-1-1 helps strengthen our community, reduces strain on emergency services, and ensures neighbors get the support they need, when they need it.
SONOMA COUNTY LIBRARY INVITES COMMUNITY INPUT FOR 2026–2030 STRATEGIC PLAN The Sonoma County Library has launched a new community survey to gather input for its next multi-year Strategic Plan (2026–2030). All community members are encouraged to take part, including everyone who lives, stays, works, or attends school in Sonoma County. The survey is available in English and Spanish and can be completed in approximately 10 minutes. Responses are confidential and anonymous and will help inform the library’s decisions about resources, services, programming, facilities, technology, and more. SEE WHAT’S BEING BUILT IN ROHNERT PARK Have you ever noticed construction around town and wondered what’s happening or what’s coming next? From street improvements and park upgrades to building repairs and safety improvements, this page offers a clear snapshot of how the City is investing in our community. Each project is listed in one place, making it simple to understand what work is happening and where. You can explore projects related to roads, sidewalks, parks, public buildings, utilities, and more, all without digging through technical reports or budget documents. It is designed to be straightforward and resident-friendly. It is a great way to see how City projects support safety, mobility, and quality of life for everyone in Rohnert Park.
FIELD UPDATES AND SEASONAL MAINTENANCE As part of our ongoing commitment to keeping Rohnert Park’s parks and recreation spaces safe and enjoyable, Colegio Vista Park Baseball Field has been closed for turf renovation since October 23, 2025. The field is expected to reopen in early 2026, once winter weather subsides and conditions are suitable for play. The Sunrise Park All-Weather Soccer Field remains open, and all other grass and dirt fields are currently open—unless standing water is present, in which case the field should be considered closed. Field conditions are typically updated on our website by 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Following significant rain, fields are usually closed for 1–2 days to allow for proper drainage and to prevent damage to the turf. We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as we work to keep our fields in top shape for everyone to enjoy.

Beginning in January, household water bills will change as the City moves forward with long-planned investments to maintain and improve essential water infrastructure, including water lines, wells, and storage facilities. MARIN/SONOMA MOSQUITO AND VECTOR CONTROL SERVICES Mosquitoes, yellowjackets, and other pests can make outdoor living tough—but free help is available through the Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District. The District provides no-cost services to residents, including: Mosquito control inspections and treatment Free mosquitofish for ponds, fountains, or animal troughs Yellowjacket nest removal (in-ground nests) Rodent prevention advice and home inspections Insect identification—submit a photo or specimen online School presentations for grades K–8 Community education on preventing bites and protecting health You can help by eliminating standing water, repairing screens, clearing gutters, and reporting problem areas early. MEET YOUR CITY COUNCIL The Rohnert Park City Council is elected by the Rohnert Park voters to serve for four-year terms. There are five members of the Council, including a Mayor and a Vice Mayor. The City Council adopts goals and policies during Council meetings to set the direction for the City. The Council approves and adopts the City's Financial Plans, General Plan and the Capital Improvement Plan. The City Council appoints the City Manager, the City Attorney, and members of City Commissions, Committees, and Boards. CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS UPDATE! Beginning with the January 13, 2026 City Council meeting, the regular meeting start time will shift to 5:30 pm. This update replaces the current 5:00 pm start time and will apply to all meetings moving forward. The City of Rohnert Park welcomes your participation at City Council meetings at 5:30 p.m., on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month. If you are interested in learning about issues going on in your own backyard, community events, and other hot topics, please feel free to watch on Cable Channel 26, YouTube, or by visiting our Meeting Central.
