Our parka doesn’t have a fake fur hood.

We think our travel jeans are the best in the world, but don’t take our word for it. They were recently reviewed by independent online blogger Snarky Nomad.

JEANS PLUS. Travel jeans that actually exist.

So a while back I shared some thoughts on the endless debate over whether or not to travel with jeans. They’re immensely comfortable, but incredibly bulky. They’re suitable for any and all social situations, but horrible in extreme heat and rain. They’ll last forever, but if you get stuck doing a sink wash, they’ll stay wet forever. It’s a tough call.

But I also pointed out that the real mystery is not about whether to pack jeans or not, but rather why the outdoor companies are too stupid to realize that making a travel-friendly version of the world’s most popular leg attire would be exquisitely magnificent, and that their failure

to do so is a ludicrous manifestation of sheer stupidity that deserves our collective disdain. Luckily, someone actually agrees.

So here we are with a pair of jeans from Rohan, a company that pretty much only makes travel clothing, which is incredibly convenient for backpackers who are tired of looking like mountaineers all the time.

The Art of Arriving

In 1908 the recently formed Motor Cycling Club organised the first Land’s End Trial – a long-distance time trial for motorists and motorcyclists. 105 years later the event is still going strong and now over 300 drivers and riders tackle the 360 mile route. Motorcycle journalist and Rohan enthusiast Bob Dixon was one of them.

The proprietor of the B&B welcomed me with a beaming farmer’s wife smile, politely ignoring the desperate, unshaven appearance and overlooking the fact my riding gear was coated in a crust of thick Cornish clay. After riding a motorbike for 21 hours across Cornwall and Devon, all I could focus on was the big comfy bed I’d fixated on for the past 100 miles.

Sinking into the soft duvet I uttered two words – “never again” – a hollow promise made to myself on previous events. Surrounded by the detritus of a gruelling motorcycle adventure scattered carelessly around the room – rucksack, maps, fuel bottles, heated gloves, thermals, change of clothing, heavy boots, body armour, etc. – I succumbed to fatigue and sleep engulfed me like an anaesthetic.

I’d just completed the 91st Land’s End Trial, an event with its roots in the pioneering days of the motor bicycle. Entrants compete against the course and

for the chance to win a gold, silver or bronze medal, the objective being to ‘keep a clean sheet’. This involves riding through the night and tackling approximately twenty observed sections and special tests. Whilst riding the observed sections, stopping the bike or putting a foot down is classed as a failure on that particular section.

Performance on the observed sections of the trial dictates how well you fare in the results. A typical section might be a rough, twisty 300 metre track snaking upwards through a wood. The sections often incorporate a water crossing of some sort, not to mention rocks, ruts and tree roots. But here’s the rub; a significant portion of them are tackled at night. No illumination is provided (other than the lights of your vehicle) and advance inspection is forbidden. Observers are situated along the section looking for transgressions of the no footing rule. A clean sheet for all sections means a gold medal. One failed section means silver,

two means a bronze and three means close, but no cigar. All you’ll get to take home at that point are the memories and a finisher’s certificate.

The event is open to motorcycles and cars and an eclectic range of machinery takes part. There is no particular advantage to having a modern vehicle, and a typical entry list will contain a bizarre mixture of motorcycles which could range from a 1927 Scott right up to the latest off-road competition bike. There’s no handicapping system because there’s no particular advantage in using a modern, powerful bike. A modern vehicle can have reliability on its side but the downside is they can rarely be fixed at the side of the road if something goes wrong, especially if it’s an electronic failure. By contrast the average classic bike can usually be fixed using nothing more than a Swiss army knife, a pair of ladies tights and a tin of WD40.

For this event I’d chosen to ride my 30 year-old Laverda Atlas – at 600cc it’s heavier than the bikes I normally ride, putting it at a disadvantage on the trickier off-road sections of the course. In its favour, it performed very well on the road and in turn this reduced fatigue. It’s all about selecting which compromise of power versus weight suits your needs.

Aside from the difficulties of riding for 20 hours straight through the night and tackling various obstacles and special tests, there is a more basic challenge faced by the motorcycle competitor – how to carry all the kit? The problem is compounded by the need to carry a fresh set of smart clothing along with the rest of the gear, in order to enjoy an après trial evening out with fellow competitors. Space is always at a premium and excess weight can be disastrous. It takes a bit of ingenuity and lateral thinking to pack

Now, there are people in this world who can crumple an old sweatshirt and a pair of Levis into a carrier bag and somehow look like Brad Pitt when they put them on to go out. Unofficial points are awarded to competitors who turn up for the evening reception without appearing to have been dragged around the course backwards, in fact some of the more dapper competitors wouldn’t look out of place drinking cocktails

at Harry’s Bar. Sadly, I’m not one of them.

No matter how carefully I pack a shirt, when I unpack, it looks like a failed origami attempt. I could spend an hour meticulously folding and packing a pair of trousers and still resemble an escaped POW when I go out in the evening. It’s always been a problem but recently I discovered a suitably sartorial solution within the Rohan range of smart, lightweight clothing, which has the advantage of taking up very little space in the rucksack and the creases pretty much drop out when the gear is hung up. Packability I think they call it. I call it clever.

Did I say ‘never again’? It’s amazing how a cold beer and fresh set of clothes can restore the spirit and help you forget what you’ve just put yourself through.

Staying true

Written in 1985

Rohan scores over ordinary clothing in the following ways:

1. Weight. Rohan weighs considerably less than conventional clothing of the same size.

2. Pack size. Rohan packs very small. A pair of Bags trousers will fit in a soft drinks can. A whole wardrobe in a rucksack.

3. Fast drying/easycare. Fast drying means not needing to change after being caught in the rain. Garments can be washed out in a hand basin or mountain stream and worn soon after. Ironing (if required) can be done easily or fast drip dried. Local laundry services up the Orinoco are not likely to damage your precious clothes either.

4. Comfort. Rohan’s soft fabrics which are light, non-itch, breathable and yet highly wind resistant, give a much higher level of comfort over a variety of climatic conditions than normal wear.

5. Reliability. We expect our garments to go with our customers for four months continuous use in the Himalayas. We don’t expect them to let people down (obviously we are not infallible, just more careful with both design and manufacture).

6. Security. Pockets are designed to be as secure as possible from pickpockets, thieves and vagabonds. Most garments have secure zipped pockets, but we encourage clients to keep valuables in trouser pockets, as they are more difficult to pick and trousers are less likely to be left lying around in sudden warm spells.

7. Versatility. Because Rohan garments are not ‘combinations’ but individual units, they are more versatile. The same few garments used either together or individually can cover most weather conditions.

To get the perfect shot we’ve sat for hours on sea ice, waiting alongside Inuit hunters for a sight of their quarry. We’ve driven reindeer with Nenets herders in Western Siberia and we’ve kept Cree trappers company on fishing trips in Northern Quebec.

The latter event possibly caused more of a commotion and prompted me to order no less than five pairs! Given how well they wear, that should last me for another forty years.

I have worn them every day and slept in them at night for an entire month and after a good wash, they look great again.

Photography in Arctic conditions presents an abundance of technical problems. Working outside in winds of over seventy miles per hour and temperatures below -50°C, it can feel like nature is really testing you. Having gear you can fully depend upon in these conditions isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity.

TRAVELLING REALLY REALLY LIGHT

When Sarah Howcroft and husband Paul founded Rohan in the early seventies, the ambition was to re-think the way we all dressed. This is the story of how she put some of those ideas to the test.

One grey winter’s morning I woke up to be confronted with the overriding need to see my grown-up son. The fact that he lived in Pasadena in the environs of LA meant an 11 hour flight. At this point, I realised maternal instinct versus carbon footprint was no competition. It’s a mother thing.

The trip had to be focused: catch up and see a little of his part of the world. Six days tops.

While planning, a germ of an idea began to develop. Finally, I had the chance to see if I could successfully do the week’s trip with what I stood up in.

Questions like ‘Isn’t that a bit stupid?’ and ‘Why?’ came to mind. Liberating and interesting to myself. All your worldly goods for the trip on your own body.

So the decision was made, flight booked and body clad. My one-body wardrobe consisted

of my well worn Rohan Bags, Rohan Pampas, T Plus Short Sleeved, Microgrid fleece and lightweight cross trainers. The Rohan layering system at work.

I glided through the airport departure lounge and slid into my seat, bum bag on lap, and observed with a smile the chaos that ensued with the stowing of what is laughingly called hand luggage.

We flew into the west over Baffin Island and the top of Canada and down the West Coast of America, landing 11 hours and four meals later at LAX Airport. Off I trotted, ignoring the baggage reclaim – when you get off the plane the other side you are ready to go. No standing in long lines, documents in hand ready to smile nicely at the immigration officials. As I trotted towards the main exit a completely irrational thought struck me; would I recognise my son? Having not seen him for over a year strange things happen in the mind of the mother.

Ring any bells? My trot was accelerating with anticipation when I felt the firm hands of two imposing airport security ladies, one on each arm, and we were heading for another part of the vast building. If you have ever been ‘guided’ by security you will know what this feels like.

After some dialogue based on ‘the purpose of my visit’ and scrutiny of my documents and questions as to why no baggage. “Everybody has baggage on long haul or cabin luggage at the very least.” I was told.

I meant to say it uses less fuel and causes less CO2 emissions. What would have been smart would have been to blame time and anyway clothes are so much cheaper in The States.

Even better to have said because it’s possible with Rohan, they may have even warmed to that. Anyway I was released into the arms of my son. Mission accomplished.

Cutting down windchill can make a big difference to your comfort and safety. Garments that carry this icon are highly wind resistant.

Heat

Keeping comfortable in the heat can be harder than keeping warm in the cold. We choose the right fabric weights, employ Airflow TM weaves and use Dynamic Moisture ControlTM technology.

Cold

All materials for cold weather, that carry the warmth icon, are rated Base, Mid, High or Extreme allowing you to select what you need with accuracy.

Sun

BarricadeTM

BarricadeTM is different to conventional waterproof fabrics, it is dynamic and responds to your body temperature and the humidity of the surrounding environment. The steamier it gets inside, the better the membrane works and the more vapour escapes.

InsuloftTM

The most practical and thermally efficient insulator available. Tough, lightweight, packable, easy to wash and fast drying.

Anti Odour SilverTM

An advanced silver technology inhibits the growth of bacteria and greatly reduces odour. It is permanent, and will not wash out or wear out.

Dynamic Moisture ControlTM

Keeps you cool and reduces heat stress in hot or humid climates. In colder, wetter conditions it moves water vapour away from the skin.

AirflowTM

Staying cool in the heat is actually more challenging than keeping warm in the cold. The most effective fabric technology is to use open weave structures that disperse heat through convective cooling.

650+

Down

Nothing beats the warmth-to-weight ratio of down – nature’s natural insulator. For the coldest climates we use 650+ fill power. This is measured using the European system, the North American system produces much higher numbers. Experience has taught us that this level gives the perfect balance. It’s warm enough for inactive times yet won’t cook you when things get moving.

Hydrophobic Down

Hydrophobic down uses nano technology to encourage water to bond to itself rather than the down. It dries 60% faster and retains far more loft than untreated down.

Durable Water RepellencyTM

This water resistant finish will withstand at least twenty washes and at this point, its performance will still remain at 80% efficiency.

CoolantTM

Embedding microscopic mica crystals into the knit of the fabric has an active, cooling effect on the body.

Heat Yarn

A heat generating performance fabric that reacts with body moisture to generate heat. It also offers wicking, temperature regulation and anti bacterial properties keeping you fresher for longer.

Your order will be despatched direct from our warehouse in the UK. Most parcels will be delivered within 10 business days. We charge a flat rate of $25 for shipping. The shipping charge is non-refundable.

Returns

If you are not entirely happy with your order, simply return it to us in the condition you received it within 30 days and we’ll happily exchange or refund you in full.
