In 1972, Paul and Sarah Howcroft created Rohan, with the customer needs at the heart of everything they did.

This is as true today as it was then. Their passion for designing outdoor clothing started with the activity, before incorporating relevant fabric technologies for comfort and protection in Britain’s varied climate.

Their first product, a pair of quick-drying mountaineering salopettes, launched in 1978.

This was followed by the Windlord Gwalhir Jacket, worn by Messner and Habeler on the first ascent of Everest without oxygen. The jacket was pioneering, as the fabric was a combination of super lightweight, windproof, and breathable, creating a barrier against the harshest elements. It put Rohan on the map.

Industry-leading

Over the years, Rohan has developed into an industryleading, technical outdoor and travel clothing retailer. After a Which? survey where more than 10,000 shoppers rated their experience with UK Outdoor and Sports equipment retailers against various criteria, Rohan came top of the table for the second year running as a Which? Due to the pandemic over the past 18 months, many more people discovered outdoor pursuits, often discovering walks near their homes that they never knew existed. With their new-found freedom of being outdoors, they also realised it is essential to have suitable kit. As a Brand, this is an area we excel in, recognised by the Which? Awards. The perfect storm

As a British outdoor Brand, we know British weather all too well and design our kit and clothing around its unpredictable nature. We ensure each piece is ready to tackle whatever the weather brings, so you can adventure on in comfort.

As that’s typically wind & rain, a key piece of outdoor clothing is a good waterproof jacket.

Each of our waterproof jackets meet the Barricade Standard, meaning they’re fully waterproof to a minimum of 20,000mm of water and breathable to a minimum of 20,000g of water vapour. Featuring 5 tough construction methods and fully sealed seams, the Barricade Standard is over ten times the British standard for waterproofing.

For further protection, our waterproofs are treated with a Durable Water Repellency finish, which forces water droplets to run off the outside of the fabric maintaining its effectiveness – ideal in heavy downpours.

A show of strength on Kilimanjaro

The last 18 months have seen us all look at life differently; mental health came to the forefront, and we quickly had to find and adapt to a new way of living. The lockdowns forced us to explore our local surroundings and allowed us to see the beauty of our cities, towns and villages that we had once taken for granted.

I had the opportunity to chat with Martin Hibbert, someone who had his life turned upside down, yet every day is making the most of it. We could all learn from his motivation and drive when times get tough. Growing up, Martin loved going to gigs and experiencing music; his Mum once told him, “If you just listen to music, you’re doing it wrong. You’ve got to feel it.” Being able to feel and hear the music is important to him, and he wants to make sure his daughter experiences the same.

Martin decided to end his 20-year career in banking to follow his passions and started up his own football agency. His family and friends were sceptical and doubted that it was a good idea, but Martin was determined to be successful. He told me, “when someone tells me I can’t do something, it makes me want to do it more and prove them wrong”. Fast forward to Monday 22 May 2017; the Manchester Arena was the target of a suicide bomber; 22 people died. Martin was approximately 6 metres away from the bomber with his daughter when the detonator exploded. He was left with 22 wounds from shrapnel, one of which severed his spinal cord and left him paralysed from the waist down. If it were not for the fantastic NHS workers who worked hard to keep him alive, Martin might not be with us today, wanting to change the world and how disabled people are viewed in today’s society.

Martin spent most of his time recovering at the Specialist Spinal Unit run by The Spinal Injuries Association (SIA). He was shocked to find out that not everyone who sustains a spinal cord injury is given the same opportunities for rehabilitation. Martin feels that everyone who needs care should have the opportunity to receive the valuable tools that they require to live a fulfilled life, the same as anyone else. To make it happen, Martin wants to give back to all of the people who have helped him recover by raising money to allow the SIA to expand their resources. On 1 September 2021, Martin and his team will be starting their climb up Mount Kilimanjaro. He will be using a custom-built hand bike to get to the summit and plans to take a Paralympic torch from the 2012 London Olympics to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, to highlight the Paralympic values of determination, equality, courage and inspiration.

“I’ve still got my brain and my arms and my hands, so there’s still a lot I can do.”

Martin is a huge advocate for mental health, in particular men’s health. Having been experiencing depression before the terror attack, he wants to share his experience, and throughout the lockdown he embraced zoom, and thoroughly enjoyed giving motivational talks. He is having an impact on many people’s lives with his powerful story and the positive energy he has is helping others in tenfold; and Martin won’t ever stop, he has lots of plans for the future for how he can help those who want it.

The Base Layer

Ideal in both warm and cold conditions, a base layer wicks moisture effectively and dries rapidly, keeping you cool and comfortable in all temperatures. Opting for a merino wool material, which is naturally antibacterial, helps further regulate your body temperature while maintaining freshness.

The Mid-Layer

When the temperature drops, start insulating your body with a mid-layer. This traps air and reduces heat loss, while continuing the process of wicking away moisture. Most often a fleece material, thicker generally means warmer. However, our advanced Microgrid fleece offers remarkable insulation that packs down into an integrated Packpocket.

The Soft Shell

A soft shell’s primary function is to improve the insulating effects of the layers underneath. It does this by promoting the dispersal of moisture vapour, to maximise breathability and eliminate wind chill. Whether you’re hiking or on a gentle walk, this super light but effective layer can make all the difference when the weather suddenly turns.

The Insulation Layer

Boost your body warmth considerably with an insulation layer that’s thermally efficient, trapping dry air and dramatically reducing heat loss. Using either synthetic wadding, like our Insuloft, or natural down, an insulation layer provides a surprising amount of warmth for its size. Super compressible, it won’t take up much room in your pack and fills you with the confidence to carry on in chillier temperatures.

The Hard Shell

For full protection from the elements, add a hard shell. As well as bolstering the insulation of all layers, it’s fully waterproof and eliminates wind chill. Our waterproof jackets come with our renowned Barricade Standard, which combines our latest fabric technology to be waterproof, windproof and breathable.

Trialled and tested on longer hikes, the Fjell Jacket delivers zipped up protection that never feels restrictive. In fact, our very first Bags trousers of 1982 revolutionised the outdoor walking trouser market here in the UK – and we’ve been refining our range ever since. The Airlight fabric was born out of a design idea to replace jeans as the go-to trouser for the walk into the mountains, cue our iconic Bags.

We found the fabric that fits our criteria, in the form of duvets – a craze that swept the UK in the 1970s. We worked with a Danish company to create a polycotton blend of their cover fabric, this soon became our iconic Airlight.

Protective, lightweight, packable, easy-care and versatile – Airlight is the fabric that epitomises our five principles and is still central to our range today.

Alongside Airlight, we spent decades developing two more fabrics: Multiflex and Multiflex Light. These sophisticated blends of polyamide and elastane are remarkably tough, stretchy, wind resistant and fast drying. Exactly what you want in outdoor trousers, for taking in the view or scrambling to the summit.

Designed to be useful for many seasons to come, all our trousers come with handy features like zip security pockets, reinforced stress points and elastic where you need it. Our range includes additional features such as Insect Shield® technology, a Dynamic Moisture Control wicking treatment, a Durable Water Repellent finish, or our trademark accessory D-ring to attach keys and essential kit.

An inspiration towards reclaiming the UK’s dark skies.

The Exmoor Society is an independent charity that protects and promotes Exmoor for the benefit of all and is the only membership organisation that is dedicated to the National Park status.

Established in 1958, the Society acts as a champion and watchdog for conservation and the enjoyment of natural beauty and cultural heritage. It searches for solutions to today’s challenges by gathering evidence to influence rural decision-makers both locally and nationally.

Exmoor National Park welcomes over 2 million visitors every year. It is famous for its wealth of different landscapes, diverse wildlife, and cultural heritage. However, a feature that is too often overlooked about Exmoor is the quality of its dark skies.

In 2011, Exmoor was designated an International Dark Sky Reserve by the International Dark Sky Association. The first reserve in Europe, Exmoor’s limited light pollution offers some of the best sites for observing the night sky in the UK. Astronomers can not only observe star constellations and planets, but also our neighbouring galaxy Andromeda.

To celebrate the 10th year of Exmoor’s Dark Sky Reserve status, the Exmoor Society dedicated its annual spring conference to ‘Nocturnal Exmoor’, examining the importance of dark skies to various aspects of life including wildlife, farming practises, the modern arts and tourism. A recurrent theme is that of light pollution. Light is so integral to human activity that many people are unaware of its detrimental effect on the natural world.

Light pollution is classed as the ‘inappropriate or excessive use of artificial light’. Artificial light such as streetlights, although necessary for health and safety reasons, are often highly ineffective, providing undesirable brightness in the form of glare and sky glow. This ultimately blocks our ability to observe the night sky. In Exmoor, where light pollution is tightly controlled, on a clear night you can expect to see 1000 stars with the naked eye. Travel a mere 15 miles to Taunton, this number plummets to below 50 stars.

Light pollution also seriously disrupts wildlife whose life cycles depend on the dark. Studies show that as artificial light increases, the relative abundance and the ability for moths to feed and mate significantly decreases. Considering it takes 10,000 moth caterpillars to feed one brood of blue tits, it is clear how light pollution not only interferes with the biology of certain species but can disrupt entire food chains.

Unlike many aspects of human influence on the natural world, light pollution is completely reversible. Pulling curtains and switching lights off are the most effective methods of reducing light pollution. In cases where outside lighting is essential, consideration should go into the type of light fitting used. The best options are ‘shielded’ lights which direct light and thus minimise sky glow and light trespass.

By being creative with how we use light, star-studded skies and glimpses of the milky way could be part of our future, wherever we are in the country. Until then, Exmoor offers us the ability to experience the beauty and wonder of truly dark skies.

In 2012, Rohan’s Gift Your Gear initiative was launching to enable a new generation to experience the outdoors and prevent kit from going to landfill. Our stores started collecting donations of useable outdoor kit and we now encourage these through two channels, instore or via post direct to Rohan. We sort and distribute the donations to youth organisations and charities across the UK.

At a similar time, Mikkel Juel Iversen was in the process of setting up a new production company, creating films that drew audience’s attention to key issues and sought to inspire positive social change. On the Saturday before Christmas 2012, wanting to enact the values of his company, Mikkel and his business partner took to the streets of London to spend time with the homeless and give them Christmas presents.

Posting on Facebook, Mikkel invited his friends to share in the experience. A number of them took up his invitation, and several more sent donations. Since that first outing of eight people, Under One Sky has become a collective of over 1,400 volunteers. Over the past year and a half they have worked tirelessly throughout the lockdowns, providing 85,000 meals to people without homes.

In 2012, Mikkel wasn’t planning to set up the national organisation that Under One Sky is now, he just wanted to do a good deed. But the more he shared the stories he heard on the streets, the more people wanted to get involved.

“There was an air of desperation.”

Under One Sky’s “sky walks” continued to bring friendly faces, kind words and warm meals to the homeless. The plan was to expand further across the UK and Europe, and then the pandemic hit. As so many were told to stay at home, Mikkel found that

out on the streets “there was an air of desperation, conditions were even worse than before”. The Under One Sky team took to the streets every day. Their efforts were documented by journalist Amelia Gentleman from the Guardian, who joined them for the day and wrote about the experience. After that, Mikkel recalls, “everything went crazy”.

Within two days, 600 people had registered as volunteers. A different TV/radio crew joined each daily sky walk for two weeks. Now, Under One Sky runs 15 walks and serves around 500 people every week.

Rohan’s Gift Your Gear initiative and Under One Sky are joining forces. Today Mikkel tells us all about Under One Sky and how Gift Your Gear is going to support their future plans.

“Most people cannot relate to homelessness, but most people will be able to relate to the factors that lead to homelessness.”

For Mikkel, the word homelessness is misleading as “it diverts attention from why people end up homeless”. He says if these reasons why are not understood and resolved, “in most cases, it’s only going to be a matter of time before those receiving support return to the streets.” The team at Under One Sky believe that, “if we’re to create a stronger emotional connection to the topic of homelessness, we should start focusing on some of those underlying factors.”

There are three levels to the work done by Under One Sky: removing stigma, building community and changing lives. Mikkel champions what he calls the “human-centric” approach. He explains: “our focus has always been on the human connection. It’s always been around dignity.” The support offered by Under One Sky starts with a conversation; groups of 5 volunteers cover set areas of the city on their

Sky Walks, meeting people without homes wherever they are. That’s really important to Mikkel, who says: “if you want to have a conversation, go where someone feels most comfortable”.

“All these small things, keeping people dry, warm or cold, depending on the weather. It is making a really huge difference.”

Under One Sky is active in London, Brighton and Cambridge. The outdoor kit that is donated through Rohan’s Gift Your Gear initiative will make a big difference to the day-to-day lives of people living on the streets. But it’s not just about keeping people dry. It’s also about dignity.

“If you’re wearing dirty clothes, how can you go to a job interview? How can you go to a meeting at the council? It stops you from progressing in your own life” says Mikkel. Our durable, moisturewicking and odour repellent fabric technologies are vital when it comes to improving the wellbeing of people without homes. Donations of durable, useable outdoor kit will go a long way to support Under One Sky in their mission to meet homeless people with a spirit of compassion, and a genuine desire to connect and create a feeling of belonging in our world today.
