A plot of land at 4040 Del Rey Ave. will be the location of a new mixed-use building that includes 230 apartments as well as office and retail space. The building will stand six stories and include a parking garage to accommodate 368 vehicles. The project will be built by California Landmark Group, the company responsible for two other developments in the area. CLG’s ‘R3’ loft project was recently completed at 4091 Redwood Ave., while their ‘D1’ live-work apartment complex is under construction at 4210 Del Rey. Once completed the three developments will total 365 new residences within 2 blocks of the intersection of Lincoln and Washington Blvds.

Renovation of Santa Monica Sears store moving forward The redevelopment of the closed Sears store in Santa Monica is moving forward, following the approval of a Certificate of Approriateness from the city’s Landmark Commission. The store closed in April following a long-term plan by the company to scale back its retail operation and repurpose many of its buildings. Now owned by a sister company, Seritage Growth Properties, the property at 302 Colorado Blvd. is due for redevelopment into a mixed-use project of creative office and retail space. Mixed use project planned for Fox Hills Developer HSH Management Developer HSH Management recently announced plans to build an expansive mixed-use project adjacent to the Westfield Culver City mall. Named Fox Hills Plaza, the project will consist of a series of low-rise buildings containing 750 apartments as well as 20,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. The design of the complex reflects the topography of the area, situating buildings around several paseos, connecting the residential area to the south with the shopping area to the north. The open layout also leaves about 3 acres of the 6 acre parcel as publicly accessible open space. No timeline has been announced for the project as it is in the earliest stages of development.
Community News In-N-Out sues Smashburger over trademarks
Regional hamburger stalwart In-N-Out is flexing its litigious muscles, filing a lawsuit against its fast casual competitor Smashburger. In-NOut claims that the upstart chain is infringing upon its trademarks with its own “ Triple Double” burger. In-N-Out has registered trademarks for its “Double-Double” and “ Triple Triple” sandwiches and claims that the Smashburger product’s name is too similar. Though In-N-Out has a devoted following, Smashburger is a rising power in the restaurant world, having grown to 373 locations in just 10 years of existence. In-N-Out was founded in Baldwin Park in 1948 and is currently based in Irvine. They have 326 restaurants in the western and southwestern United States.
New law would eliminate many jaywalking tickets
A bill pending in Sacramento would clarify the law regarding crossing signals, eliminating citations for pedestrians who cross after a countdown signal has begun. Under current law, police officers can cite citizens for jaywalking even when countdown signals indicate there is still plenty of time to cross the street, creating a “gotcha” situations for citizens who believe they are acting responsibly. The current law governing crossing signals was written in 1981, when signals only indicated “Walk” and “Don’t Walk,” and was not updated when signals became more advanced. With jaywalking tickets coming with a $197 fine, critics have accused police departments of enforcing the law only to raise revenue.
Brentwood shopping center due for renovation
The shopping center at 11819 Wilshire Blvd., near Granville Ave. in Brentwood, is expected to be renovated, converting it into a more pedestrianfriendly retail destination. The owners plan to replace the central parking lot with an outdoor plaza, as well as adding a pedestrian bridge across the property. CorePower Yoga, a current tenant at the mall is expected to remain in the new plaza and represent the type of businesses that the owners hope to attract going forward. The project isn’t the only pending construction in the area as a 34-story residential tower is planned for 11750 Wilshire, about half a block away.

The former Willie Jane lo¬cation has a seasonal, vegeta¬ble-for¬ward menu. Dishes featured on the menu, the diver scallop with sweet corn, chili, and tarragon; the Dungeness crab with buttermilk, dill and juniper; lamb saddle with fairytale eggplant; and local apricots comple¬mented by Amaretti cream—for dessert. Neighbor currently has dinner hours only, which start from 5 p.m. – 12 a.m.
Top Chef winner, Michael Voltaggio, has relo¬cated his restaurant ink to a much big¬ger space in West Hollywood. The new restaurant, ink. well, offers a diverse menu, yet still has some of Voltaggio’s classics such as the street corn with cool ranch “foritos” and the egg yolk gnocchi. New to the menu is an entire section of seafood dishes like the warm Dungeness crab with nori rigatoni. Also added for the first time is a burger, made with dry-aged beef, bacon, and whipped cheese. The new restaurant has an expansive dining room and bar area, which provides more space and a larg¬er craft cocktail and draft beer offerings. Hours for ink.well run from 6 – 10 p.m. daily, with services until 11 p.m. on weekends.

In honor of David Hockney’s 80th birthday, the Getty is exhibiting a two-part retrospective of his career, focusing on self-portrait paintings than span 65 years of his life, as well as photographs and Polaroid photocollages from the 1980’s.
This exhibition focuses on the work Marc Chagall created for the stage, as well as iconic paintings depicting musicians and lyrical scenes. Of particular note are Chagall’s set and costume designs that haven’t been exhibited since they were originally seen on stage. The exhibition also includes the screening of documentary footage of the original performances.
