Community News MTA plans improvements to Orange line
With new funding provided by the passage of Measure M, the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority has several projects in the works, including upgrades to the Valley’s Orange Line busway. Running from Chatsworth to North Hollywood, the Orange Line is popular among Valley residents, who should see improvements in travel times once the project is complete. Among the proposed changes would be the construction of elevated crossings at busy intersections, as well upgrades to existing traffic signals. Metro expects to begin the work in 2019. Other longterm improvements to the Orange Line include the gradual replacement of the current fleet with zero-emission vehicles, and the conversion of the busline to a light rail line. Legal barriers to building a train in the Valley were cleared in 2014, but the Metro doesn’t expect to undertake such a project until 2051.
Co-working leader expands into Burbank WeWork, one of the most prominent co-working companies in the country, have announced plans to open a location in Burbank. Located at 3900 West Alameda Ave, the location will be comprised of 75,000 square feet of space, including shared kitchens and larger event space. Owing to its location near Disney and Warner Brothers, WeWork
Burbank will also include rooms dedicated to filming and editing. Co-working firms offer work space to small business and self-employed workers, ranging from short-term desks and conference rooms, to dedicated private offices. WeWork has 11 other offices in the LA area, catering to workers in various industries. Memberships start at $45 a month, with private offices starting at $400.
Apartment complexes sold in North Hills The commercial real estate market in North Hills has been active recently, with two apartment complexes purchased by private equity firm Rockpoint Group. The Boston-based company first bought a portfolio of four complexes on Orion and Langdon Avenues, paying $13.6 million for 128 units. Separately, the firm also purchased three apartment buildings on Blythe Street, containing 68 units, for $9.6 million. Rockpoint owns several properties around the country, including apartment buildings in Panorama City, a medical office building in Westlake, and the Belamar boutique hotel in Manhattan Beach.
Community News Golden Road founder plans to open Sherman Oaks brewpub
Tony Yanow, one of the founders of Golden Road, the successful LA craft brewery, has announced plans to open a brewpub in Sherman Oaks. The restaurant and brewery combo will be located at 13730 Ventura Blvd., at the former location of Marlin and Ono Grille. Yanow and company hope to be open for business by late spring. Golden Road, located on San Fernando Road at the 134 freeway, was sold to Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2015, providing Yanow with deep pockets to fund other ventures, including several bars and restaurants around in LA.
Is Elon Musk building a tunnel under the 405?
Building upon the expansion of the Metro light rail system, Culver City is exploring the possibility of building a protected bike lane leading to and from the Expo Line station at 8817 Washington Blvd. Running along Washington between Wesley St. and Ince Blvd., the bike lane would help connect the Metro to the commercial district of downtown Culver City, encouraging locals and visitors to explore the area through bicycles and public transportation, rather than clogging roads and parking garages with their cars. Although the Culver City train station has existed in some form since the early 1900’s, the Metro platform has only been in operation since 2012, and was the terminus of the Expo Line until recently. With recent expansion to Santa Monica, the Expo Line now connects downtown Los Angeles to the ocean, with stops in USC, Culver City, and Westwood.

This eatery will make you forget everything you knew about Greek cuisine. The menu here is simple; pick your plate, what you want to fill it with, your toppings, and finally your sauce. The possibilities are endless! Rodini Park serves pita wraps, bowls, gyro, shawarma, and kebabs. Most choices cost about $8 for the finished product, and everything is less than $10 unless you load up on extras. The restaurant also has a full in-house bakery that makes breads, cookies and various other sweets. Rodini Park Greek Kitchen is open daily from 8 a.m. – 11 p.m. The kitchen is now serving weekend breakfast from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

This casual coffee, pastry and sandwich shop offers breakfast, lunch, and early dinner. Whether you’re looking for a quick coffee to go, or wanting to sit down and enjoy a meal, Locomotive Café has you covered. The shop was recently named by the website Yelp as one of the country’s top 100 places to eat for 2017. The menu here includes items such as a Sriracha BLT, a grilled vegetarian sandwich, grilled caprese, fresh cucumber salad, and a Greek salad that comes with romaine lettuce, bell peppers, cucumber, red onions, kalamata olives, and feta cheese with creamy feta vinaigrette. Locomotive Café is open Monday – Saturday from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Kitchen hours are from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Everything served here is made on site, using the best quality ingredients, including organic flour and pantry staples, Valrhona chocolate and farmers-market produce. Here you can expect a crowd patiently waiting to savor the delicious rotating menu. The menu at Huckleberry bakery and café includes fried egg sandwiches, cinnamon rolls, chilaquiles, brisket hash, maple-bacon scone, and a prosciutto and gruyere croissant. They may not sell anything containing actual huckleberries, but this is one of the favorites on the Westside. Huckleberry is open everyday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. You will encounter a line, but it will be worth it.

Fashionable Likeness: Pastel Portraits in18th-Century Britain Degas: “Russian Dancers” and the Art of Pastel November 1, 2016 - May 7, 2017 The Getty is currently featuring two exhibitions that focus on fine art created with pastels. The first focuses on classical portraits created in Great Britain in the 18th century, particularly of the nouveau riche. The second delves into the pastel drawings of impressionist painter Edgar Degas, who is most known for his works depicting dancers.
