Judge hesitant to grant dismissal of lawsuit over immigration agents’ use-of-force tactics in Chicago By Hannah Meisel

CHIC AGO — A federal judge on Thursday registered worry over this week’s fatal shooting in Minneapolis by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent as she asked for more time in deciding whether to dismiss a lawsuit over federal agents’ use-of-force tactics against protesters in Chicago and surrounding areas. Just before the Trump administration’s “Operation Midway Blitz” abruptly wound down its Chicago area immigration enforcement campaign in November, U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis issued a preliminary injunction that indefinitely restricts agents’ ability to use force, including riot control weapons like tear gas. But after the Chicago-based 7th Circuit Court of Appeals stayed Ellis’ ruling two weeks later, plaintiffs filed a motion to voluntarily dismiss the case. But during a hearing Thursday, Ellis expressed some skepticism about the wisdom of that maneuver. The judge
cited Wednesday’s fatal shooting of motorist Renee Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. “And it doesn’t give me much comfort in reading news reports that someone who — in some news reports, anyway — was described as a legal observer was shot yesterday in Minneapolis,” Ellis said. “So that is my concern.” Video of the incident contradicts the Trump administration’s narrative that the shooting was justified because Good was boxing in agents with her car and attempting to use it as a weapon. Wednesday’s shooting echoes the case of Miramar Martinez, which was overseen by Ellis’ colleague this fall. Martinez was also accused of having boxed in immigration agents with her car in an early October incident on Chicago’s South West side before a Border Patrol agent shot her five times. She was charged with assaulting federal immigration agents but Martinez denied allegations that she was a threat. By mid-November, the case fell apart and prosecutors asked that the charges be dismissed.

At several times over the course of litigation in the riot control weapons case this fall, Ellis noted her belief that the Trump administration, especially U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino, had lied about the tenor of protests of immigration enforcement actions in order to justify using force against demonstrators. Initially, Ellis had scheduled an early March trial in the case based on news reports that Bovino would return to the Chicago area in the early spring with a much larger contingent of agents, telling attorneys during a mid-November hearing that, “It would make sense that if it does ramp up again, everyone knows what the rules are.” But granting the plaintiffs’ motion for voluntary dismissal of the case would cancel the trial. Ellis also cited Bovino’s brief return to Chicago in December and news reports this week that several dozen Border Patrol agents had returned to the area Tuesday night before she asked lawyers for the plaintiffs if they still want to move forward with dismissal. After attorneys confirmed that was still the plan, the judge said that while she “certainly cannot force plaintiffs to litigate a case they don’t want to litigate,” she still has “an obligation to protect the interests of the class.” The complaint was filed as a class-action lawsuit and Ellis certified the class this fall. “If I dismiss this case, the preliminary injunction ceases to exist,” she said. “Certainly, given my ruling, I believe that the evidence in this case justified the need for a preliminary injunction to govern the actions of the government when interacting with legal observers, journalists and protesters.” Moving to dismiss the lawsuit will prevent the 7th Circuit or U.S. Supreme Court from giving the Trump administration any permanent expanded powers against civilians. Despite the specter of losses on appeal, plaintiffs’ lawyers have framed ending the case as a win. Ellis asked for more time before making her final decision on dismissal, scheduling the next hearing for Jan. 22. Reporter Maggie Dougherty contributed to this story. Nicor files for $221M gas rate hike less than 2 months after last increase approved The request to the ICC would add another $6 to customers’ monthly bills By Maggie Dougherty

CHICAGO — Nicor Gas on Friday filed a $221 million rate hike request with the Illinois Commerce Commission, less than two months after state regulators approved a $168 million rate hike for the utility. The company estimates that the increase, if approved in full, will add less than $6 to monthly gas bills for typical residential customers, or 6.7% annually, starting in 2027. Nicor distributes natural gas to around 2.3 million customers in northern Illinois. Consumer advocates expressed outrage with the move, calling on state regulators to reject the request, which comes only days after Peoples Gas filed for a $202 million rate hike on Monday. “I’m shocked that Nicor is proposing to raise rates again, just one month after imposing its last rate hike,” Illinois PIRG Director Abe Scarr wrote in a statement. “Nicor is busting its customers’ household budgets because it apparently refuses to live within its own.” Illinois PIRG is a consumer advocacy group that often challenges rate requests by Illinois energy utilities. If approved in full by the ICC, Nicor’s request will have increased by about 170% in the last decade, according to PIRG, an increase it says is “significantly higher” than the state’s other major gas and electric utilities. Nicor said in a statement that the investment is needed to enhance the reliability of its natural gas distribution system, particularly through extreme weather, and to remain in compliance with state and federal regulations. That includes replacing aging equipment, inspecting and repairing over 400 miles of transmission pipelines, and safety-related replacement of over 45 miles of distribution lines, according to the company. Consumer groups challenged the assertion that these investments are necessary now, saying the company has tripled its infrastructure spending over the past decade and that Nicor has already replaced its old iron pipes that were at a
high risk of failure. Gas utilities deliver natural gas to consumers at market rates and make money on the delivery of the gas, not on the gas itself. This, consumer groups argue, incentivizes overly aggressive spending on infrastructure projects related to gas delivery. An analysis by the Future of Heat Initiative, an independent nonprofit that makes recommendations on utilities’ policy, found that gas delivery charges now make up 65% of customers’ gas bills in Illinois, up from 36% in 1984. The conclusion, the report finds, is that customers pay more for pipes and delivery of gas than for the gas itself. The filing will undergo an 11-month review period by the ICC, giving consumer groups the chance to intervene and formally challenge spending requests. If
allowed by the ICC, the rate hike would go into effect next January. “If Nicor is granted this $221 million increase, it would push the utility’s total rate increases to more than $1 billion in less than a decade,” said Sarah Moskowitz, executive director of the Citizens Utility Board, a utility watchdog group created by the Illinois legislature. “CUB will challenge Nicor’s money grab and we call on state regulators to crack down on the company,” she added. “We are deeply concerned that this sixth rate hike will push even more gas customers into hardship.” Capitol News Illinois is a nonprofit, nonpartisan news service that distributes state government coverage to hundreds of news outlets statewide. ‘Hamnet’ and ‘One Battle After Another’ take top honors at Golden Globes By Jake Coyle

Paul Thomas A nderson’s rag tag revolutionary saga “One Battle After Another” took top honors at Sunday’s 83rd Golden Globes in the comedy category, while Chloé Zhao’s Shakespeare drama “Hamnet” pulled off an upset over “Sinners” to win best film, drama. “One Battle After Another” won best film, comedy, supporting female actor for Teyana Taylor and best director and best screenplay for Anderson. He became just the second filmmaker to sweep director, screenplay and film, as a producer, at the Globes. Only Oliver Stone, for “Born on the Fourth of July,” managed the same feat. In an awards ceremony that went almost entirely as expected, the night’s final award was the most surprising. While “One Battle After Another” has been the clear front-runner this awards season, most have pegged Ryan Coogler’s Jim Crow-era vampire thriller as its closest competition. But “Hamnet,” a speculative drama about William and Agnes Shakespeare based on Maggie O’Farrell’s bestseller, won in the dramatic category shortly after its star, Jessie Buckley, won best female actor in a drama. It was a banner night for Warner Bros., the studio behind “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners.” Warner Bros. Discovery has agreed to be sold to Netflix in an $83 billion deal. Paramount Skydance has appealed to shareholders with its own rival offer. In his speech after winning best director, Anderson praised Warner co-chief Michael DeLuca. “He said he wanted to run a studio one day and let filmmakers make whatever they want,” said Anderson. “That’s how you get ‘Sinners.’ That’s how you get a ‘Weapons.’ That’s how you get ‘One Battle After Another.’” The final awards brought to, or near, the stage a handful of the most talented filmmakers together in Anderson, Zhao and Coogler — plus Steven Spielberg, a producer of “Hamnet.” Regardless of who won what, it was a heartening moment of solidarity between them, with a shared sense of purpose. Zhao fondly recalled being at Sundance Labs with Coogler when they were each starting out. “As students, let’s keep our hearts
open and let’s keep seeing each other and allowing each other to be seen,” said Zhao, while Coogler smiled from the front row. “Sinners” won for best score and cinematic and box-office achievement. The win for box office and cinematic achievement, over franchise films like “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” was notable for Coogler’s film, a movie that some reports labeled a qualified success on its release. Yet “Sinners” ultimately grossed $278 million domestically and $368 million worldwide, making it the highest grossing original film in 15 years. “I just want to thank the audience for showing up,” said Coogler. “It’s means the world.” Coming off years of scandal and subsequent rehabilitation, the Globes and host Nikki Glaser put on a star-studded ceremony that saw wins for the streaming sensation “KPop Demon Hunters” (best animated film, song), a meta triumph for Seth Rogen’s “The Studio” and an inaugural award for podcasting that went to Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang.” Many of the Oscar favorites won. Timothee Chalamet won his first Golden Globe, for “Marty Supreme,” after four previous nominations. The 30-year-old is poised to win his first Oscar. Fellow nominees like Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney stood to applaud his win. “My dad instilled in me a spirit of gratitude growing up: Always be grateful for what you have,” said Chalamet. “It’s allowed me to leave this ceremony in the past empty handed, my head held high, grateful just to be here. I’d be lying if I didn’t say those moments didn’t make this moment that much sweeter.”

Globes mix glitz and gloom
Political tension and industrywide uncertainty were the prevailing moods heading into Sunday’s awards. Hollywood is coming off a disappointing box-office year and now anxiously awaits the fate of one of its most storied studios, Warner Bros. Following the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer, several attendees wore pins reading “Be Good.” The Globes, formerly presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, have no overlap or direct correlation with the Academy Awards. After being sold in 2023 to Todd Boehly’s Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions, a part of Penske Media, the Globes are voted on by around 400 people. The Oscars are voted on by more than 10,500 professionals. But in the fluctuating undulations of awards season, a good speech at the Globes can boost an Oscar campaign. Winners Sunday included Rose Byrne (“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You”) for best female actor in a comedy or musical, and Wagner Moura, the Brazilian star of “The Secret Agent,” for best male actor in a drama.
Glaser comes out swinging
The Globes, held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, got underway with a pointedly political opening from host Nikki Glaser and an early award for the night’s favorite, “One Battle After Another.” Emceeing the show for the second straight year, Glaser kicked off the show with self-aware satire. “Yes, the Golden Globes, without a doubt the most important thing happening in the world right now,” she said. In a winning, rapid-fire opening monologue that landed some punch lines on the usual subjects — the age of Leonardo DiCaprio’s dates, Kevin Hart’s
Kleber Mendonça Filho’s period political thriller also won best international film. “I think if trauma can be passed along generations, values can too,” Moura said. “So this to the ones who are sticking with their values in difficult moments.” Other winners Sunday included the supporting actor front-runner, Stellan Skarsgård who won for the Norwegian family drama “Sentimental Value.” It was the first major Hollywood movie award for the 74-year-old, a respected veteran actor who drew a standing ovation. “I was not prepared for this because I, of course, thought I was too old,” said Skarsgård.
‘The Studio’ and ‘Adolesence’ win
In the television awards, “The Pitt” took best drama series, while Noah Wyle won, too, brushing past his former “ER”-star Clooney on the way to the stage. Netflix’s “Adolescence” won four awards: best limited series, and acting awards for Erin Doherty, Stephen Graham and 16-year-old Owen Cooper. Other winners included Rhea Seehorn for “Pluribus” and Jean Smart for “Hacks.” But the most comically poignant award of the night went to “The Studio,” the best comedy series winner. Seth Rogen’s Hollywood satire memorably included an episode devoted to drama around a night at the Globes. (Sample line: “I remember when the red carpet of the Golden Globes actually stood for something.”) Rogen also won best male actor in a comedy. “This is so weird,” Rogen said, chuckling. “We just pretended to do this. And now it’s happening.”

Adding plum trees to the backyard By Grant McCarty Contributor
Like many of you, I’m trying to decide which fruit trees to add to my backyard this spring. With new apple trees planted in fall 2025 and established bush cherries already in place, I still have room for more trees. One option I’ve been seriously considering is plums. Like other stone fruits, plums can be both rewarding and a little adventurous to grow. With cold winters and unpredictable spring weather, plum success starts with choosing the right types and understanding their needs. The good news is that both Asian (often called Japanese-type) and European plums can be grown here with a bit of planning. Asian plums are known for their
juicy texture, strong flavor, and earlier ripening. Popular varieties for our area include ‘Shiro’, ‘Santa Rosa’, ‘Methley’, and others. These plums tend to bloom early, which makes them more vulnerable to spring frosts, but when conditions cooperate they can be very productive. Most Asian plums do require more than one variety for cross pollination. European plums are another good option and are generally more tolerant of cold winters. They bloom slightly later which can help them avoid frost damage. Common European varieties include ‘Stanley’, ‘Bluefre’, ‘Green Gage’, and ‘Italian Plum’. Many European plums will produce fruit with only one tree, but planting two different varieties with overlapping bloom times usually leads
to better fruit set and larger harvests. There are also hybrid plums, which are crosses between Asian plums and American plum species. These were bred for improved cold hardiness, disease resistance, and reliable production in northern climates. Popular hybrid varieties include ‘Toka’, ‘Superior’, ‘Alderman’, ‘Pipestone’, ‘Underwood’, and ‘Waneta’. Many hybrids require a compatible hybrid or Asian plum nearby for good pollination. Another important consideration is tree size. Dwarf and semi-dwarf plum trees can be difficult to find, as standard trees — which can reach nearly 25 feet tall within a few years — are more common. This may limit how many trees you can plant, especially since some plums require more than one variety for cross
pollination. If space is limited, choosing a European plum may make the most sense. Plums are susceptible to black knot, a disease managed primarily through good sanitation and timely pruning. Infected branches should be removed at least 6–8 inches below visible knots during the dormant season and destroyed rather than composted. Keeping trees well pruned to improve air circulation, along with removing nearby wild or neglected plum and cherry trees, can further reduce disease pressure. As you plan new fruit trees this spring, take some time to explore your plum options — you may find they fit surprisingly well into a backyard orchard. Last March in 2024 Nate Hagens held a reality round table focused on geopolitics, debt, energy and their impact on our national and global economy. It represented an attempt to try and figure out what is going on in the world and what it means for society, the biosphere and the world. The session opened with a comment by Art Berman a petroleum geologist reminding people that if our oil supply and consumption becomes flat or declines then economic growth is no longer possible. From his perspective the geopolitical fragmentation occurring in the world right now is in part from the realization that we are in a race to the bottom to get what energy is left. The discussion acknowledged that the primary objective of the Trump Administration was to drill for oil and natural gas and bring down energy prices. It is seen as being driven by an effort to create a new grand global bargain as the old paradigm is falling apart. One ques-
tion raised was whether the future will be determined by a peaceful resolution or by military means. Another concern discussed was the funds needed to pay for the expansion of fossil fuels and military spending. The bond markets are seen in control of the economy and eventually determine what can be spent on the military and other portions of the economy. Europe is already facing the economic consequences of changing economic priorities as the Trump administration insists that Europe assume a larger share of the cost of providing security to them. Trump has challenge Europe to increase its military spending and if it does less money will be available for welfare spending. One way to unite people in agreeing to more military spending is to point to an enemy who is a threat to one’s country. Envisioning a madman armed with nuclear weapons is a powerful image to rally the public to support increased military spending. In addition to the race to get what oil remains is the competition between the U.S. and China regarding the national
security issues from the rapid processing of global information through the continued development of artificial intelligence technologies. The existing satellites in space can serve military operations, scientific progress, economic activity. and social control. They also create significant global vulnerabilities giving rise to the question of whether the competitive pressures will be resolved through military actions or peaceful negotiations. The recent actions by the Trump administration in Venezuela is based on conflicting claims of who owns the oil and land, Venezuela or U.S. owned oil companies. Jillian Ambrose article, “Dense, sticky and heavy: why Venezuelan crude oil appeals to US refineries” provides an overview of the situation. It describes the U.S. involvement in the harvesting of heavy crude oil from Venezuela and processing it in heavy oil refineries owned by major U.S. oil companies. The refineries are located along the Gulf Coast. They were designed to process the heavy oil into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and feedstock for the chemical industry,
The refineries continued to operate by importing heavy crude oil via a pipeline from the Canadian tar sands. How the ownership issues over Venezuela oil are resolved remains unclear. Venezuela was selling some of its oil to Cuba and China and it appears those sales will be curtailed intensifying tension between the countries involved. Additional tensions could develop between the U.S. and Canada if the pipeline sales to the U.S. gulf coast refineries are curtailed. If the Trump administration goal of lowering gasoline prices is to be realized processing oil from Venezuela could prove helpful. However the oil producing facilities in Venezuela are in need of a costly upgrade. Cost estimates of 185 billion dollars over 14 years have been made regarding the improvements. Of greatest concern is whether the Venezuela oil ownership issue will be resolved through negotiations or more military actions. The clash over oil resources appears to reinforce Art Berman’s perspective that the world leaders are involved in a race to the bottom over securing oil resources.
