All Sedges Have Edges, But Carex Species Thrive in All Type of Conditions: Wild Ones Rock River Valley Chapter continues their 2025 monthly educational programming on Thursday, April 17, with a presentation by Mandy Komes-Leifheit, Territory/Segment Manager for Native Plants at Midwest Groundcovers/Natural Garden Natives, on the often overlooked but endlessly valuable sedges of the Carex genus. The free, open-to-thepublic presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. and is available to attend in person at Cherry Valley Public Library, 755 E State St, or virtually via Zoom with advance pre-registration through the chapter’s website (wildonesrrvc.org). In-person attendees are welcome to come early for a social time beginning at 6:00 p.m. Illinois is home to 159 native Carex species, which are highly adaptable and found in a wide range of habitats—from wetlands and woodlands to sunny residential landscapes. Each Carex species thrives in its specific environmental conditions, making them an essential part of every ecosystem. Sedges play a key role in supporting healthy environments by providing habitat and food sources for wildlife, while also providing texture, structure, weed suppression, and soil stabilization in a landscape. About Wild Ones Rock River Valley Chapter Wild Ones is a national not-for-profit organization with over 90 chapters advocating for the many benefits of growing native plants in home and other landscapes. For more than 30 years, the Rock River Valley Chapter has been educating the community about the importance of restoring natural ecosystems in residential and commercial spaces. The chapter hosts events, workshops, and presentations to inspire individuals and organizations to embrace native landscaping for a healthier planet.
