Dear members and guests, There is nothing quite like the first cool mornings after a long, hot Florida summer! We deserve some great weather and hopefully will see an abundance of it! As another year draws to a close, it feels like father time is speeding up. The holiday season is upon us again and we are so glad to see many of our friends and members returning to Florida this year. Unfortunately, due to Covid, most were unable to travel last year, so welcome back! Even though Covid is waning, it is still a formidable foe. We don’t know what the future will bring as far as elevated or reduced cases. As of now, things look much better. However, due to the lingering issues and uncertainty, we have made some decisions on future club events that we want to share with you now. There will be no Thanksgiving buffet served at the club this year and no Santa breakfast with pictures. We know many of you look forward to these events and this was a very difficult decision to make, but we felt being cautious was the prudent thing to do. We will have our annual pro shop party on Saturday, December 11th. It will be like last year where we had more of an informal, all-day event. There will be plenty of games and activities to participate in, as well as merchandise and discounted rounds on sale.
We have gained several new members recently. Thank you so much for choosing RCC as your home for golf! Unfortunately, due to various reasons, we have lost a few members also. It may not always seem like it, but everything we do has the members best interests in mind. We thank you for your membership! The 60th anniversary of the Platinum Coast Tournament will be held on December 4th and 5th. This is one of the premiere amateur tournaments on the Space Coast. This event boasts a long history of notable champions, such as Paul Azinger and Scott Gump. This prestigious tournament always draws the best players in the area and many who travel quite a distance to experience the competition and comradery. Contact the pro shop for registration information. Finally, it looks like our efforts have paid off in our search for some needed equipment. We are excited about the arrival of the Toro rough mower and will soon see a fairway mower as well. This is a great start, but we are aware there is more needed. Thank you all for your patience, and I know Jerry and his crew are excited about the new arrivals. Looking forward to a great season and hope to see you all around the club! All my best,

Turf Care NOVEMBER/DECEMBER We have finally made it through the grueling summer heat and are about to enjoy the abundance of great weather that fall and winter bring to Florida. I think a lot of us take for granted the fact we live in a place where people love to come to for vacations. We have some exciting things happening here at the club, and I want to discuss for a moment the difficult situation we have been under due to supply chain issues, etc. First, the exciting news is we have been able to obtain two nice pieces of turf equipment. We have purchased a Toro rough mower and a Toro fairway mower. These two pieces will replace what we are currently using for the same purpose. Those machines gave us many years of good service but are now ready to retire or become a backup. We also have our eyes on a greens roller and a greens mower. Buying a piece of turf equipment during this time has proven to be difficult due to the lack of availability. I’m sure you have all heard this issue being discussed about car dealerships. The same issue is happening with turf equipment dealers. A new piece ordered today won’t be delivered until 6 months later. Therefore, people are hanging on longer to their current equipment. This makes the inventory shrink dramatically for good used pieces of equipment. We are fortunate to have found some of the pieces we have been looking for. They are in excellent condition and should provide many years of service in maintaining the course. The greens are healing from the recent aerification. Nobody enjoys this cultural practice but the benefits we reap from it make it a necessity. Without periodic greens aerifications, the greens would gradually become very sponge like.
Turf Care The organic build up in the soil would cause excessive moisture retention that invites a host of problems, such as algae and fungus. This temporary inconvenience is the price we pay to have a good surface the rest of the time. We have been treating the fairways and green surrounds recently to remove some of the summer annual and perennial weeds that are indigenous to our area. You may notice some browning out in areas where the weeds are more populous. This is temporary until the desired grass is able to grow in place of the weeds. This program will not be continued through winter as the Bermuda will cease to grow rapidly enough to fill the voids. We will restart the procedure again in the spring and continue throughout summer. Overseeding of the driving range tee and all tees on the golf course will take place in mid-November. Our tees are on the small side and cannot withstand the traffic through winter if we maintain Bermuda only. Therefore, we overseed with perennial rye grass. This is a cool season turf that does very well in Florida during the winter season. It will not survive in summer. It does need ample water to germinate and grow. As in years past, you may see the sprinklers on during the day to keep the seed moist. It normally takes 5-7 days for germination. Watering post germination is critical for survival of the new plant. We generally wait about 2 weeks before the first mowing because if done too soon the plant can be pulled out by the root due to lack of root establishment. So once again, we are asking for a little patience during this process. We look forward to a great winter season of golf, and welcome home to all of our members who were away during the summer! Good Day Fellow Players, Tournament season is drawing to a close and winter season is starting! We have had a very successful season so far. The EFSC Scholarship Invitational was well attended with 140. This was the second year for this event here at Rockledge CC. We look forward to this being a traditional tournament. We are looking forward to finishing the season strong with our Platinum Coast Invitational on December 4th and 5th. This year will be the 60th Annual event and is shaping up to be a strong field in all flights! There is still time to sign up for the Platinum Coast, call the golf shop at 321-636- 3160
