FROM THE DESK OF A. BEYEL I hope that this newsletter finds you well as the summer season will soon be upon us. Our annual brunches are back. Easter seemed to be the perfect start as we sold out and the feedback was all positive. We were so happy to see all the mom's and their families at the Mother’s Day Brunch this weekend and it was another success! The month of April was truly the month of championships here at Rockledge Country Club. Thank you to all those who participated in the Club Championship on April 23rd and 24th and please join me in congratulating our new Women’s Club Champion Lynn Dufour and our new Men’s Club Champion Taylor Whalen. It took a birdie on the first playoff hole for Taylor to claim the Men’s Club Championship. You’ll know when Taylor and Lynn are at the club when you see their cars parked in the Champions’ parking spaces near the first tee!! Again CONGRATULATIONS! I would be remise if I did not mention how proud I was of the staff and the excitement I saw generated throughout this event Thank you to all of those who shared their feedback with us following the Club Championship, we sincerely appreciate your input as we look to enhance the member events here at the club. One of the questions we asked of participants was, “Would you participate in a Match Play Championship here at the Club” according to the responses we received 100% of you would like to play. Be on the lookout for a Match Play event to be added to the Golf Events Calendar later this year. I’d also like to congratulate our resident Pickleball Pro Keri Keen on her Bronze Medal winning performance at the US Open last month in Naples, Florida. The popularity of pickleball has really taken off in recent years, and Florida is a top spot for the sport. If you have an interest in learning to play and get out and enjoy the facilities here at the club, please reach out. Keri would love to help you learn all the shots that helped her to win the Bronze Medal! As many of you are aware, we have entered into an agreement on behalf of our members with Duran Golf Course during the summer months to provide you with a great golf value yearround. This agreement affords gold and silver members with the opportunity to play Duran at significantly reduced rate of $22 per round from May 1st through September 30th. If your considering upgrading your membership this would be the season to do it as you can gain access to another golf course at preferred member rates. As we begin our summer maintenance practices later this month, having a second golf course to play ensures that you can enjoy the game of golf throughout the summer. Turf Care The month of May is sure to bring warmer temps and hopefully more rain. It is getting a little dry at the moment, and our irrigation system could use a little help from mother nature. Some of the fairways are looking a little off-green, but this is temporary as Bermuda grass is very resilient. When things get a little tough, this grass will just go into dormancy and shut down until it begins to get what it needs. Bermuda grass needs 3 things to thrive, and if any are missing, it will struggle to perform at its best. Those 3 things are: 1. Warm Temperatures 2. Adequate moisture 3. Sunlight for at least 8 hours daily. We are just beginning to move into the time of year where Bermuda grows best. This is when it has the best recuperative abilities and repairs some of those ugly scars from the winter season. Greens aerification is scheduled for May23rd. We will also aerify greens on July 18th and again on September 19th. These will all be small tine operations designed to achieve a faster healing process. Once again, smaller holes and less disruption to the playing surface. The Zoysia does not recuperate as fast as the Bermuda does. We are hoping the 3 operations will suffice, but may have to revisit depending on this year's results. Some of the tee boxes will be laser leveled on May 25th. We will soon begin preparations for this project. It will include stripping the sod off the tees and removing, bringing in some extra soil where we intend to enlarge some surfaces, rototilling to a 4-inch depth, and finally, sprigging and growing in the new turf. The Bermuda we will be using is called “tiftuf” in case anyone wants to research it. We are developing temporary tees to use until the new tee boxes have grown in. This process will take about 10 weeks. We hope to open them in early August. The tees we will be renovating are 8, 12, the back tee on 17, the black tee on 6, and possibly a couple others. We know there are more that need work, but this is about all we could handle from a labor standpoint. There will be more done in the future. Yours in Turf, Jerry Yeomans
Pro Shop 2022 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP We would like to take this opportunity to CONGRATULATE and THANK all the tournament players for their participation in the 2022 Club Championship. We hope that everyone had an enjoyable time competing these past two days and would like to invite all members to participate in the 2023 Club Championship . A sudden-death playoff was required to determine the Men's Club Champion. With a two-round total of 153, Taylor Whalen (78-75) and Joe Gonzalez (78-75) headed back to the par-5 first hole to play for the championship. With a birdie on the first playoff hole, Taylor Whalen captured the Men's Club Championship. Joe Gonzalez finished second with Daniel Adams (2021 Club Champion) finishing third. We'd also like to congratulate for Lynn Dufour for capturing the Ladies Club Championship with a two-day total of 174 (88,86). If you'd like to congratulate Taylor and Lynn, you'll know they are here when you see their cars in their preferred parking spaces next to the first tee. UPCOMING EVENTS The next event on the member’s golf calendar is the Memorial Day Scramble which will take place on Monday May 30th. The event will be a two-person scramble starting at 9:00 am with lunch to follow. We encourage everyone to sign up today by visiting the Member’s Portal on the website and then click on ‘Register for Golf Events’, then click on the event on the May calendar and you will be able to review the event details and sign up online. Other events that are in the process of being added to the Golf Events Calendar are: • Independence Day Scramble – July 3rd • The Fireball Open – a two-person Shamble (or Texas Scramble) - TBD • Labor Day Scramble – Sept 5th In addition to the events noted above, we are working on adding a “Nine & Dine” event to the events calendar as well as a Member Match Play event – so please keep an eye on your inbox as we’d love to see you compete and have fun here at your club.
